GW VIEW FROM THE BOARD

New Beginnings By Dan McCarty

I

am not the biggest fan of winter, which may sound odd coming from a guy that grew up in a small town at over 8000-foot elevation in the Colorado Rocky Mountains. It seems as if everything you do in the winter, even the smallest of tasks on the ranch, takes twice as long and twice as much effort. At that elevation you can sometimes be facing the possibility of feet of snow overnight and as soon as the storm rolls out you can usually be assured that the temperature will plummet to well below zero. The simple task of keeping cattle watered can sometimes be the biggest challenge. However, once the calendar rolls over to January there are always a couple of things I look forward to. One of those is the National Western Stock Show (NWSS) in Denver. I haven’t missed very many in my lifetime. I am a pedigree nut so one thing I always enjoy is studying pedigrees and seeing how each cross worked. The other thing I have always enjoyed is visiting with breeders from around the county, some of which you may only see one or two times a year. In Denver I have had to opportunity to make many new friends, develop business partnerships, and invest in genetics that have had lasting impacts on our program. If you attended the National Western this year, you saw what is the beginning of a $756 million renovation of the entire facility. In the coming years, the footprint of the NWSS will expand from the current 130 acres to 250 acres. The Yards will be moved to the north to make room for a new livestock center that will include a new auction area and livestock hall. Colorado State University has agreed to become a partner on the new complex and will house multiple agriculture facilities there. The only structure that will survive the renovation will be the historic Livestock Exchange Building. Phase One of the project, which includes all the livestock facilities, is slated to be completed in time for the 2023 National Western. If you haven’t been to Denver

6 | MARCH 2020

in a few years, I encourage you to attend next year, as the saying “On the Hill” will soon become a thing of the past. The second thing I always look forward to in the new year is the beginning of calving and the excitement of seeing how your mating decisions worked out. It doesn’t matter how many times you have witnessed it in your life, but there is always a feeling of pride and the awe and respect of Mother Nature as a new, wet calf shakes their head and clumsily rises to their unsteady feet for the first time – all while the new mother works to get them dry and points them in the right direction. One of the first paying jobs I had on a ranch was night calving several hundred heifers. There is just something different about being on the night calving shift. The cold saddle squeaking beneath you, the sound of a horse moving across crisp snow, the Milky Way above you, and the anticipation of what you might find on your next check. The quiet solitude and the quality time with the cows must be addicting because I still prefer the 2 a.m. check to this day. The other reason that this time of the year is so exciting is because this is when the Gelbvieh and Balancer cow shines and can showcase her maternal superiority. All the qualities of our breed that we so often tout – fertility, milking ability, maternal efficiency, increased calving ease and longevity, all come together in one package as that new calf hits the ground and mama turns around to meet her new arrival. I guess with all these things, maybe winter isn’t so bad after all. This snow will soon make green grass and all these calves will be out grazing with their mothers. Of course, the next season is mud season, and that’s the one I’m really not a fan of. D

GW FROM THE CORNER OFFICE

Providing the Service By Megan Slater

D

o you complete the entire transaction of the registered cattle business? The standard operating procedure for seedstock suppliers is cyclical in nature when we consider what transpires in one year’s time. The primary steps to delivering genetics to the beef industry are as follows: place the cow on inventory (pay your herd assessment) at the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA), choose the mating for the subsequent year, register the current year’s progeny, and then sell the bull to a commercial cowcalf producer. On paper it sounds so simple, doesn’t it? But are you going above and beyond to provide your customers with additional service to help aid in the success of their program?

the animals’ EPDs are kept current through the weekly genetic evaluation so that ranchers may keep up to date with their bull batteries, which results in more informed breeding decisions and future bull purchases. The AGA offers many programs and services for the commercial producer such as Feeder Finder, a program that assists producers marketing load lots of Gelbvieh and Balancer-influenced feeder cattle, and Balancer Edge, a source and age verification program for Gelbvieh and Balancer sired feeder calves. Are you educating your customers about the programs and services the AGA offers? These programs are made available by the AGA to help members help their customers. A simple conversation about the program or even just small ad in your bull sale catalog can help inform customers of the programs that are designed to help them market their calves.

Ultimately, the responsibility of AGA members to service their customers begins with the herd assessment process. Now more than ever, AGA members, as genetic suppliers, have the responsibility to their customers and the industry to inventory their respective ow more than ever, AGA members, as genetic cowherds, collect all of the most suppliers, have the responsibility to their customers relevant phenotypes to enhance and the industry to inventory their respective cowherds, data accuracy, utilize the available tools and services that the AGA collect all of the most relevant phenotypes to enhance provides through DNA testing and, complete the transaction by data accuracy, utilize the available tools and services transferring the animals you sell to that the AGA provides through DNA testing and, your customers.

N

complete the transaction by transferring the animals you sell to your customers.

One of the simplest steps you can do to provide additional service to your customers, and an important step in seedstock production, is to transfer registration and ownership of animals that you have sold to not only other registered breeders, but commercial customers as well. Why is the act of transferring animals so important? Once a customer is on the AGA radar the flow of information and services begins. First, the customer receives a subscription to Gelbvieh World and The Profit Picture magazine in order to stay in touch with AGA activities and services. Additionally,

8 | MARCH 2020

I encourage each AGA member to finalize herd assessments and to complete the service after the sale by transferring the animals you sell. As always, if you need any assistance in this process, the AGA staff is here to help and can be reached by calling 303-465-2333 or emailing registry@ gelbvieh.org. D

GW OUT IN THE FIELD

Protecting Your Investment Managing Your Bulls Right By Tom Strahm

T

he spring bull buying season is in full swing. Selecting high quality, registered Gelbvieh and Balancer® bulls is a great choice for your commercial breeding program! Purchasing superior genetics is a substantial commitment for cow-calf operations and it’s worth the investment when you consider the genetic impact that will be made on your herd for several generations. Protect your investment by properly managing your bulls before turnout time. Don’t forget about, or overlook your bulls when they’re not with the cows. Proactively evaluate and manage your bulls as well as you do the cows. Bulls that are physically fit, sound on their feet and legs, and in appropriate body condition are more likely to breed more cows in the early part of the breeding season. Many producers buy yearling bulls. Even though they looked great at the sale, or when they arrived at your place, remember that they have a lot of growing and developing to do yet. Getting your newly purchased bulls delivered to your farm or ranch a couple of months before turnout if possible will be advantageous for continuing proper bull development. Providing a higher level of care for young bulls than the existing bull battery can help make the first breeding season more successful, and increase the useful life of your young bulls. One of the common complaints is that these young bulls can get so run down in their first breeding season. This risk can be mitigated, and weight loss potentially reduced or minimized through good nutritional management from the time of purchase until the bulls are turned out with the cows. If the bulls are over-conditioned, don’t neglect them, or take weight off too fast, which can be detrimental. Getting these bulls toned up but continuing to meet their nutritional requirements is critical to their

10 | MARCH 2020

performance in the pasture and their longevity. Feeding high quality forage is extremely important. Work with a nutritionist to formulate a properly balanced ration to keep these young bulls growing at a rate of approximately 2 pounds a day. The cost of a nutritionist, and supplemental feed as needed, will be money well spent compared to the cost in lost productivity of under-performing bulls. This is also a good opportunity to look at the bulls you currently have on inventory. If you have any thin, or under-conditioned bulls, now is the time to provide them some extra groceries as well. As a guideline and general recommendation, all the bulls should exhibit a body condition score of 5-6 before being turned out with cows for the season. Exercise is very important during this time prior to turnout. Bulls should be kept in large enough areas so that they can get out and travel. Exercise will improve their physical fitness, and help maintain desirable body condition. All yearling bulls should have a thorough and complete breeding soundness exam. It is a good practice to have a BSE completed on all the bulls before turn out. The cost of doing a BSE is cheap insurance compared to the cost of lost production by turning out a sterile bull, or one with low fertility. Bulls should be evaluated for being healthy, structurally sound, and in overall good physical condition. A physical examination of the external and internal reproductive organs should be conducted as well as a semen evaluation. Implement an annual immunization program. Vaccinate bulls against respiratory diseases, 7-way clostridials, and lepto/vibrio. In addition, bulls should be treated for external and internal parasites. If you haven’t done so already, establish good relationships with a veterinarian and consulting nutritionist. Protect your investment in bulls with a good comprehensive maintenance program. This will help prepare your bulls for a more productive breeding season. They can get more cows bred on the first heat cycle when they’re fit and feeling good. You’ll receive the dividends of producing more pounds to sell! D

GW INFORMATION EXCHANGE Tips for Transferring Ownership When transferring animals to their new owner it is important that the animal(s) ends up in the appropriate account on the AGA Online Registry Service. If you are unsure whether a buyer has an AGA number, simply click the blank box next to the buyer field. This will pull up a separate window where you will enter the buyer’s zip code and then click “Find Profiles”. Review the list of members and non-members and once the correct account is found, check the box to the left of the member number. If the buyer does not already have a profile within the registry, click “Click to create new profile” at the very bottom of the page. For assistance transferring animals, please contact the AGA office at 303-465-2333.

Billing Statements The AGA sends out month-end statements to all members with locked accounts. Member accounts become locked when there is an outstanding balance on the account for more than 30 days. Once the amount on the account is paid in full the account becomes unlocked. The AGA does not store credit card information. Bills may be paid online using a credit card via the AGA Online Registry Service or members may send a check or cash to the AGA office and are asked to include a member number and invoice number with payment. For assistance paying a bill or for billing questions, please contact the AGA office at 303-465-2333.

GW OVER THE FENCE

Over the Fence with Mark Spare, DVM, Manhattan, Kansas By Jake Renner

H

erd health is vital to the longevity and constructive progression of any cow herd. With so many new products, parasites, and environmental change how do we know what to focus on and when? The top three factors that affect overall herd health include environment, vaccination, and nutritional needs. Whether a producer is bringing home a set of bred heifers, or a new herd bull, preparing your herd well in advance is invaluable. With sale season off to a strong start we turn to Mark Spare, DVM, Manhattan, Kansas, for advice on where we should focus our attention as we prepare to bring home new stock from all parts of the world.

What is the number one concern you are hearing from ranchers as they prepare to head into the spring and summer months? “Last winter and spring hold different memories for each of these producers, but each area experienced severe challenges and those memories are at the forefront as we head into late winter/early spring. Scouring calves seem to be at the forefront of the concern I hear from ranchers today.”

16 | MARCH 2020

Like many illnesses in both humans and cattle, symptoms of infection, viral or respiratory, often aren’t present until the illness has already begun its lifecycle. Timing plays a large role in the impact bugs can have on calves to cause scour outbreaks. “E. coli likes to be early, within the first week, and salmonella likes to be a little later and can get into older calves. Rotavirus and coronavirus can get into a group of calves after the E. coli risk is gone and cause scours out to about 45 days of age – these don’t always read the book, after that coronavirus can turn into respiratory signs in older calves. Cryptosporidium is another to keep in mind that can be very hard on calves resulting in severe diarrhea, dehydration, and death.” Working with your local veterinarian to develop a protocol for treatment of these sick calves is the best case.”

How should ranchers prepare themselves to manage such an issue? “There are a couple tools to use when we get into a set of scouring calves or to prevent scouring calves. Pre-calving nutrition, colostrum intake, and some sort of segregation.” “First, pre-calving nutrition serves as a dualpurpose tool because not only does it set the dam up for producing higher quality colostrum, it also provides for better overall early milk production. We are able to observe through the dairy industry that early calf health and immunity is supported by access to high quality feed including whole milk. Colostral immunity is transferred to the calf through the intestinal wall. Following the closure of these openings in the gut wall, the dam’s milk still deposits immune molecules on the walls of the intestines of the calf.” It’s important to keep in mind as stewards of animal health and welfare that producers allow the dam and calf the best chance at long-term health by not intervening unless absolutely necessary and allowing the calf to nurse on its own. “The segregation tool may be to segregate cows from heifers when calving, or to separate pairs from the rest of the calving cows during the calving season. Heifers generally do not produce colostrum as high in immune molecules as a cow and as a result calves born to heifers are at a higher risk for early disease.” When a calf born to a heifer does fall ill, they tend to shed substantially more infectious material compared

OVER THE FENCE GW to others, which creates a bigger problem for the rest of the calves, even older healthy calves. The other type of segregation is to find some way to incorporate some level of the Sandhills Calving System in the operation. It can be used preventatively or during an outbreak, but scours will tend to remain with an age group of calves, so the most important group to move during an outbreak is the group of pregnant cows. Moving the pairs, even the youngest pairs, will put the next calves to be born at a greater risk due to the contaminated environment.

Explain the importance of getting your bulls tested for Bovine Viral Diarrhea Virus Persistent Infection (BVD-PI) especially for those with production sales this spring? “We don’t know the exact number of Persistently Infected (PI) calves that will die prior to weaning, but research helps us estimate that nearly 50% of calves that are born PI will die before their peer group is weaned. From there, likely 50 – 90% of PI calves are gone before a year of age. By these numbers, it would appear that we have a pretty low risk of finding a PI calf in a bull sale of yearling or even 20-month-old bulls. However, the characteristics of the disease and the investment in a single, or multiple, breeding bulls make purchasing unknown status bulls risky. When an animal is born PI, the virus has been incorporated into the immune system and is recognized as normal, or as “self ” – this occurs when the dam is exposed to BVDV during day 50 – 150 of gestation and the developing fetus is infected. After birth, this calf sheds virus continually in every bodily fluid nasal secretions, tears, feces, and – important for this conversation – semen. Since we have no other way to identify PI cattle still around after a year of age, including BVD testing is recommended in the production system for those bulls going out in production sales.”

protocol whether quarantine is an option for a period of time or if the timing is such that the animals get put together the day of purchase. The main thing is for buyers to have a proactive conversation with their local veterinarian about the status of the cattle that they plan on purchasing – age, sex, BVD status, parasite risk, pregnancy, vaccination status, and consider any other testing or vaccination that is going to give that animal the best chance for success in the new environment.” At the end of the day you must do what’s best for your operation’s overall health that falls in line with your capabilities environmentally, financially, and physically as you prepare your herd for new arrivals. The newest purchase is an investment the future of your operation, but these purchases also present a great potential risk to the well-being of our existing livestock. Understanding your management system and the system that the new cattle come from can help in the process of preparing your herd and for the new arrivals.

What are some risks that may come with traveling with new stock? “Considering the many miles that bulls and bred females travel to their new homes, disease exposures and future challenges can be and are vastly different from where they were born and raised. This increases the importance of management interventions for the longterm success of these new animals and your herd.” D

How should buyers prep their existing herd for incoming arrivals purchased during sale season? Is there any protocol they should consider once their new arrivals unload? “Bringing in new cattle is always a challenge, as it brings new strains of diseases, changes the social dynamics of a group of cattle, and presents risk for injuries or sickness. There are pros and cons to every

JRI Bottom Line 254G9 Wins Gelbvieh Futurity By Rebecca Mettler

T

he 23rd Annual Breeder’s Choice Gelbvieh Bull Futurity was held on January 11, 2020, in the Stadium Arena in conjunction with the National Western Stock Show (NWSS) in Denver, Colorado. Gelbvieh breeders and supporters initiated the futurity to increase participation in the National Gelbvieh Show, the National Gelbvieh and Balancer® Sale, and to identify the most useful young sires in the Gelbvieh breed. The futurity event is managed by Mitchell Marketing Services. JRI Bottom Line 254G9 was the winner of this year’s futurity, owned and exhibited by Judd Ranch Inc., Pomona, Kansas. Royal Western Gelbvieh, Red Deer County, Alberta, Canada, and Circle S Ranch, Canton, Kansas, exhibited the two runner-up bulls, listed in no particular order. JRI Bottom Line 254G9 received the most votes after two rounds of voting to beat out the six other entries in the Breeder’s Choice Gelbvieh Bull Futurity. Bottom Line is a 94% purebred Gelbvieh bull sired by BBDM Bolton Pay Day 45C. He was born on February 13, 2019 and is homozygous polled and presents an EPD profile with five traits among the top 10% of the breed. His genetics also offer the fertility and longevity Gelbvieh is known for; his 7-year-old dam, JRI Clementine 254Z8, has been honored with Dam of Merit honors each year of eligibility. RWG Fudge 8442, owned by Royal Western Gelbvieh, was one of the runners-up. He is an 94% purebred Gelbvieh bull sired by RWG Right Combination 5506. RWG Fudge 8442 offers a powerful and eye-appealing phenotype combined with a particularly balanced genotype. His dam, RWG Goodnight 5515, is a young and promising potential donor female backed by a cow family known for their calving ease and maternal strength. CIRS 22YG, owned by Circle S Ranch, Canton, Kansas, is the 88% purebred Gelbvieh bull sired by DCSF Post Rock Power Built 37B8. Described as a complete package out of one of the Circle S program’s

top producing cows, CIRS 22YG was the other runnerup in this year’s futurity. His sire and dam are known for producing futurity contenders; a full sister is a past Gelbvieh futurity winner at the North American International Livestock Exhibition in Louisville, Kentucky, and a full brother was a past runner-up at the Breeder’s Choice Gelbvieh Bull Futurity. The champion bull sold for $14,000 to Locust Hill Farms, Raffin, North Carolina, for full possession and half semen interest in the National Gelbvieh and Balancer Sale held on Sunday evening at the NWSS. The Gelbvieh futurity holds a drawing among members to win the proceeds from the sale of the champion bull. Little Windy Hill Farms, Max Meadows, Virginia, won the proceeds from this year’s sale. The futurity is limited to 53 membership slots. Spots only come available when an operation doesn’t renew their membership. This year, one membership was auctioned off at the futurity final event selling to T Bar S Cattle Co., Billings, Missouri. D

activities in her local community. She has served as Cloud County 4-H president for three years and has received a host of awards for her work in numerous project areas. She is also active in her school’s FFA chapter where she has served as president for two years, pursued a beef supervised agricultural experience (SAE) project and has found success on several contest teams, including livestock, horses, meats, and dairy. Rachelle believes the AGJA has provided her with many opportunities for skills development, and that personal growth has made her into a better advocate for the breed and for agriculture as a whole. “The Gelbvieh breed has impacted my life in amazing ways. I would not know what my passion is or what my future career would be without the guidance and impact that the Gelbvieh breed and organization has given me,” Rachelle said in her scholarship essay. Congratulations to Rachelle and best of luck in your scholastic endeavors! To qualify for this particular scholarship, applicants must be an active member of AGJA, be at least a graduating high school senior through 21 years of age on January 1 of the current year. TJB Rebel Yell 804F ET Wins People’s Choice Balancer® Bull Futurity By Rebecca Mettler

T

JB Gelbvieh, Chickamauga, Georgia, captured championship honors in the 2020 People’s Choice Balancer® Bull Futurity with their inaugural entry. Over $20,000 will be awarded to TJB Gelbvieh for breeding and exhibiting the futurity champion, TJB Rebel Yell 804F ET. The People’s Choice Balancer Bull Futurity is in its tenth year. This year’s event was held January 11, 2020, in the Stadium Arena in conjunction with the National Western Stock Show (NWSS) in Denver, Colorado. The futurity is organized by Slaughter Sale Management with the purpose of identifying elite young Balancer sires that have potential to be breed leaders. TJB Rebel Yell 804F ET was selected champion by the 59 futurity members. He was born on September 1, 2018, and is a 50% Balancer, homozygous black and homozygous polled son of JRI Probity 254D28. Rebel Yell is backed by multiple generations of tremendous donor females, including his dam, TJB Anissa 921U ET. TJB proclaimed that the bull is one of the stoutest made bulls ever produced in their program. Rebel Yell also combines his stoutness with a stylish profile. Rebel Yell’s trip to the NWSS was made more monumental when he was also chosen as the grand champion Balancer bull at the 2020 Gelbvieh and Balancer National Show. Each year, one membership is randomly drawn to receive full possession and half semen interest in the champion bull. Eagle Pass Ranch of Highmore, South Dakota, won the drawing.

GW JUNIOR CONNECTION

Choosing to Lead By Colton Ivers

T

he American Gelbvieh Junior Association (AGJA) is truly one of the best organizations to be involved with. Almost everyone involved can tell a story about their first Junior Nationals, the people they’ve met, and how those same people have impacted them to this current day. As with any organization, the more time and effort put in, the more rewarding and impactful the organization becomes for everyone involved. The AGJA has several leadership opportunities to increase involvement in the Gelbvieh breed and influence a large number of people. Serving on the national junior board of directors or a state board is a great platform to better members’ leadership skills and help promote the Gelbvieh breed. These positions are designed to enhance communication, problem solving skills, and industry knowledge. Each year the AGJA Board attends an industry and leadership conference. These conferences allow attendees to network with junior members from other breed associations as well as industry professionals. Throughout the conference each member participates in a variety of activities focused on improving teamwork, problem solving, public speaking, and communication skills. One of these opportunities is

open to all junior members too. The AGJA Board would like to invite you to The Summit, which is being held July 30 through August 2, 2020, in Madison, Wisconsin. The Summit is a great opportunity for anyone ages 14-22 in the beef industry interested in expanding their knowledgebase and enhancing their leadership skills. It is important to know that not all leadership positions have titles. Every morning when a person wakes up, you choose to lead and you choose to interact with others in such a way that benefits everyone. The decisions we make directly or indirectly impact those who surround us. John Wooden, NCAA six-time coach of the year, once said, “A leader’s most powerful ally is his or her own example.” Therefore, it is imperative to make every interaction positive and constructive. Take this opportunity for personal growth and join us at The Summit. We are all motivated by different things and it’s interesting to see what motivates the current officers on the AGJA Board to be the best leaders possible. I asked the officers what motivates them to become a better leader within the Gelbvieh breed. Read along, because the answers below might motivate you to think about the exact question they answered: Grace Vehige, President: “I grew up with two great role models, my older brothers. Because I had them and so many other peers to look up to within the AGJA, I feel inspired to be a lending hand to anyone who needs it. A lot of my job is behind the scenes, but I wouldn’t trade my time or memories with the other board members or with our juniors. There’s

Raising the Bar In The Mile High City By Jake Renner There was an overwhelming sense of pride to hear the auctioneer cry out as bids flew in for the last chance at tickets for the 2020 American Gelbvieh Junior Association (AGJA) donation heifer raffle. After months of hard work by junior members from all over the U.S. to raise funds for the sake of their fellow members and the future of the AGJA it all comes to this final moment, the last slam of the gavel. After the conclusion of last year’s donation heifer raffle, AGJA board of directors set a goal to reinvigorate the fundraiser by increasing their time and effort in raising awareness, creating greater promotion for the event, and by providing more information on this special opportunity in 2020. However, they knew they couldn’t do it alone. Andrew Carnegie, ScottishAmerican philanthropist recognized the importance of working together, “Teamwork is the ability to work together toward a common vision. The ability to direct individual accomplishments towards organization objectives. It is the fuel that allows common people to attain uncommon results.” The final numbers for the 2020 AGJA Heifer Donation are anything but common. Thanks in large part to the charitable contribution of the heifer provided by Beastrom Ranch, Pierre, South Dakota,

the bar was raised by a large margin. Selling over 2,000 tickets altogether, including those mailed in by supporters near and far and sold at the National Western Stock Show, the 2020 AGJA Heifer Donation Fundraiser brought in a total of $18,607! Pride does not begin to cover how I feel sharing this information with you. I am overjoyed to see our junior members recognize their own potential and share in what has been said to be record year in recent years! On behalf of the AGJA Board of Directors, junior membership, and myself I would like to extend a passionate thank you to every individual who took the time to support these young men and women in this year’s ticket sales. With a gracious smile, and humble heart, we sincerely could not do what we do without you. The AGJA is looking forward to many opportunities to grow as cattlemen and women, advocates for the breed and industry leaders in 2020 because of your contribution(s). We hope to see you down the road at a regional show or at the 2020 AGJA Route 66 Classic in Springfield, Missouri, July 5-10, 2020! Funds raised by the AGJA members, through ticket sales, are used to help cover the cost of the AGJA Junior Classic, promote Gelbvieh and AGJA at industry events, and provide leadership opportunities to the members of the AGJA. agle Pass Ranch, Highmore, South Dakota, continued the tradition of providing a great incentive for American Gelbvieh Junior Association (AGJA) members participating in events at the AGJA Junior Classic.

Eagle Pass Ranch donated a heifer to the All-Around winner at the 2019 Music City Showdown, Lebanon, Tennessee, this summer. This year’s winner Justine Pope, Ravenna Nebraska, was recognized at the 2020 National Gelbvieh and Balancer® Sale at the National Western Stock Show in Denver, Colorado.

46 | MARCH 2020

The All-Around Award is determined through participation at junior classic. The member that earns the most points tor participation and placing in contests receives this honor. It is Eagle Pass Ranch’s wish that the proceeds from the heifer’s first calf will be donated to the American Gelbvieh Foundation, which supports research, member education and youth development opportunities such as scholarships and leadership trainings. Eagle Pass Ranch has been a long-time supporter of the AGJA. Without their support an award like this would not be possible. Thank you, Eagle Pass Ranch! D

Support the AGJA and become a sponsor for the 2020 AGJA ROUTE 66 CLASSIC! Sponsorship opportunities include champions, divisions, classes and contest winners. All sponsors will be recognized during the show, at the banquet, on the AGA website and in the August issue of Gelbvieh World. Sponsorship deadline is June 15, 2020.

T

hroughout the 2019-2020 show year, Gelbvieh and BalancerÂŽ females and bulls competed at shows across the country to earn points for the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) Ring of Gold program. Each year the qualifying animals are ranked at the conclusion of the National Gelbvieh and Balancer show at the National Western Stock Show. Godfather 575C ties all that is economically important to beef producers together in one genetic package. He is a homozygous black, homozygous polled BA75 Gelbvieh sire that specializes in calving-ease and maternal traits. The adjusted birth weight on 77 of his calves is 77 pounds with a ratio of 98. His EPD profile places him in the top 3% of the breed for CE and the top 10% for BW. On 42 of his calves the adjusted weaning weight is 652 pounds with a ratio of 100. They’ll grow with the best of them! His calves are moderate and easy fleshing with an eye appeal that makes them the first choice from the sale or replacement pen. He is in the top 25% of the breed for 12 EPD traits. Note his milk EPD places him in the top 15% of the breed and the $Cow index has him in the top 20%. His daughters are the keeping kind! His beautiful dam, EGL Janelle Y011, sold at the 2012 National Gelbvieh Sale for $25,000. She is certainly a female to build a program around. Be sure to consider him for your AI needs this spring. GW REGISTRY TIPS ‘N TRICKS

An Inventory of Importance Taylor Buckley

T

he herd assessment deadline is rapidly approaching (March 16, 2020). An essential part of the AGA’s role as a beef cattle breed association is to educate its members on the process of completing herd assessments and to shed some light on why herd assessments are important. The herd assessment deadline stems from a concept called total herd reporting. The AGA, and many other beef breed associations, has adopted the reporting process first practiced by the Red Angus Association of America. The concept of total herd reporting requires each member to record and report data on the entire registered herd. The AGA implemented a total herd reporting system to encourage people to report progeny on all active cows, which decreases the likelihood of only registering calves that are performing better than others. With all progeny accounted for, the data is more accurate because the association has all the information on contemporary groups, which results in more accurate EPDs. More accurate data fulfills Association’s ultimate goal of providing commercial

producers with information they can effectively utilize and trust. The AGA knows the importance of avoiding cherry picking data and therefore several years ago the Association implemented the inventory-based fee instead of the traditional calf-registration structure. All females that are active in the herd for 2020 are charged a yearly assessment fee of $25 until the herd assessment deadline of March 16. After the deadline, any herd assessments completed for 2020 will incur late fees. The herd assessment fee allows members to register a calf, record data on the calf and the cow, and transfer the animal. Since members are paying for a fee on each female, the AGA requires members to submit data on all calves. Assessing a whole herd, instead of individual animals, maintains the integrity of the AGA’s herdbook. Since this is a task that’s only completed once a year, it’s often helpful to have access to a refresher course. Please remember, the association staff is always here to assist and answer any questions.

Finding a Member’s Herd Assessment: First, log into the member account and find the red “Herd Management” under the Work Menue. This will give you the option to click the green “Inventory” button. Once in Inventory, access to all of the herd assessment eligible females can be seen. Under “Inventory” find “Assessment-Age” in the white tabs that run across the top of the screen. Under this tab is a list of all females that are of breeding age, or that would be expected to calve in the upcoming year. For any young heifers that may not be 13 months of age as of January 1, 2020, but are expected to calve in the upcoming year, look under “Optional Females.”

50 | MARCH 2020

REGISTRY TIPS ‘N TRICKS GW Completing Herd Assessments and Culling Cows: When looking at the list of assessment age females, the member has the ability to cull cows that are no longer in the herd and record any exposure data not yet recorded. To dispose of a cow, click on the grey trashcan to the right of her birthdate. Use the drop-down menu to select the specific reason why she is no longer in the herd, then click the green checkmark to lock the selection in place. Remember, disposing of a cow is not a tool to skip a year of calving for a cow, this is a tool to permanently dispose of a cow from the herd. With the total herd reporting format, the association seeks all information, whether it be good, bad, or indifferent. To keep the data as honest and accurate as possible, please record all calves born throughout the year. If a year of calving information is skipped for a cow, the member will have to pay for all of the years that she has been “disposed of ” before a calf can be recorded in the future. Two options are available to complete the assessment after making all necessary culls and disposals. First, each cow can be selected individually for assessment by clicking the “2020” button in the “Assess for” column, or secondly, complete assessments for all cows at one time by clicking “Complete yearly HAS process – Assess all for 2020” at the top of the page under “Assessment-Age.”

After completing the assessment process, a member can pay the account’s balance online by following the pop-up box that takes them to a check-out screen. A member does have 30 days to pay any balance incurred on the account. The association does require all first-calf heifers to have exposure data recorded with a simple yes or no answer. There is a box next to all heifers expected to have their first calf in the 2020 calving season. If a heifer was exposed or AIed during the previous breeding season, simply check the box “AI”, “PE”, or “No”. If you need to request a printed herd assessment form, please request that in plenty of time to receive it, complete it, and return it to the office before the March 16, 2020 deadline. D

GW DATA BULLETIN

Understanding EPD Accuracy and the Possible Change Table By Will Fiske and Tonya Amen

A

n Expected Progeny Difference (EPD) is an estimate of an animal’s genetic merit for a given trait. More simply, an EPD estimates the genetic value of an animal as a parent for the next generation. Each EPD is accompanied by an equally important value, a corresponding accuracy. An accuracy value is a measure of the reliability associated with the EPD. Specifically, accuracy measures the strength of the relationship between the genetic prediction (EPD) and true genetic value. As an animal transitions from a non-parent to a parent, more information is reported and used in the weekly genetic evaluation. Information used to calculate EPDs can include pedigree information, an animal’s own performance data, progeny data, genomic data, as well as information on descendants for the trait of interest, and other correlated traits. This cumulative information creates a vast interconnected network of data which is summarized in the calculated value of the EPD and the respective accuracy. Ultimately, a breeder can use accuracy to monitor the value (amount and quality) of the information used for EPD calculation. Accuracy is reported with a range of zero to one. As accuracy approaches 1.0, the EPD is more accurately estimating the true genetic merit of an animal for a given trait. Although low-accuracy EPDs are less reliable than the high-accuracy EPDs achieved by proven sires, EPDs remain the most powerful tool to describe an animal’s true genetic merit and are significantly more effective in causing genetic change than the use of actual measurements or ratios. A bull’s biological ability to produce more direct progeny in an average lifetime means they will often achieve higher accuracy values compared to the average female. While a “perfect” accuracy of 1.0 is never achieved, heavily used sires can have accuracies greater than 0.9. As information is added, an animal’s EPDs are expected to change closer to the animal’s true genetic value. Thus, the expected amount an EPD could change at a given level of accuracy is known as the ‘possible change value’ (PCV). PCVs are expressed in the units of the specific trait and illustrate the range in which an animal’s true genetic value is likely to fall. A possible change value is the amount an EPD may be expected change at a given accuracy, where an animal’s true genetic value for each trait expected to fall within one PCV two-thirds of the time.

Figure 1. American Gelbvieh Association Accuracy and Possible Change Table

The accuracy and possible change table (Figure 1) illustrates how much an EPD could potentially change at different levels of accuracy for each trait. Let’s take an example of two different bulls: 1. A bull with a CED EPD of 10 and associated accuracy of .5 2. A bull with CED EPD of 10 and associated accuracy of .9 The left-hand column of the table shows accuracy values from 0 to .9 and the traits are listed along the top of the table. In the body of the table you will find the possible change values.

54 | MARCH 2020

DATA BULLETIN GW You will see that the PCV associated with Bull 1 is +/- 3.9. This means that we are 68% sure that his true progeny difference for CED is between 6.1 and 13.9. Bull 2 has a PCV of .8; this means that we are 68% sure that his true progeny difference for CED is between 9.2 and 10.8. Figure 2 illustrates how possible change is incorporated into the visualization on each animal’s EPD tab on the AGA Online Registry Service Animal Detail Screen. A range of potential percentile ranks is given based on the animal’s accuracy value and associated possible change. Smaller yellow bands indicate higher accuracy and less possible change. Figure 2. AGA Online Registry Service Animal Detail Screen

+/- Chg (Possible Change Value)

Yellow Band (Possible Change Range)

ACC (Accuracy)

Hopefully this primer on using accuracy and possible change to evaluate the risk associated with low vs higher accuracy animals will help with breeding decisions in the future and will be valuable in understanding movement in EPDs as more data is added. D

GW NEWS

Calf Losses Before Birth a Concern Abortions and stillbirths are frustrating to livestock producers.

A

n “abortion” is the discharge of the fetus prior to the end of the normal gestation period, according to Gerald Stokka, North Dakota State University Extension veterinarian and livestock stewardship specialist. Many abortions occur within the first 45 days of conception (called early embryonic death), and the embryos or fetuses are so small that they may not be seen. Other abortions may occur near normal calving time, and determining whether the cow has aborted or a premature birth has occurred is difficult. A stillbirth is when a full-term calf is born dead, with no obvious evidence of the cause of death. Abortions have many causes, including physiological causes such as extreme environmental or handling stress and hormonal imbalances, metabolic problems, toxicoses and/or infectious diseases caused by protozoa, fungi, bacteria or viruses, says Brett Webb, director of the NDSU Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. Abortions and stillbirths can be the result of a direct effect, such as viral, bacteria or protozoal organisms gaining entrance to the fetus. The fetus also may have abnormal development (congenital defects) that results in abnormalities noted at delivery, such as a lack of the anus opening or insideout calf, or inherited genetic defects such as “curly calf ” or “fawn calf ” syndrome. Indirectly, abortions and stillbirths can be a result of an interruption of the connection between the fetus and the dam or illness of the dam. The fetus is nourished and oxygenated via the organ called the placenta. This is a very intimate connection between the two, and any disruption can impact the fetus negatively or result in its death. Inflammation of this organ is called a “placentitis.” Bacterial, fungal and protozoal infections can cause placentitis. Mycotic abortions are one of the more common results of fungal infections. Moldy feeds are implicated as the source of most fungal infections.

56 | MARCH 2020

Stillbirths can be frustrating because producers often see no indication of the cause or evidence of excessive labor. These simply can result from an umbilical cord rupture, premature separation of the placenta or the placenta blocking the nostrils after the delivery of an otherwise healthy calf. Regardless of the cause, abortions may be sporadic or they may occur as “storms.” The normal abortion or stillbirth rate would be 1% to 2% of cows in a herd. Losses greater than this are abnormal, and producers should seek veterinary assistance to identify the cause, says Janna Block, Extension livestock systems specialist at NDSU’s Hettinger Research Extension Center. Block also advises producers to keep good records of calf and cow losses because indemnity payments may be available to offset some of the losses. “The best chance of identifying what caused an abortion is prompt submission of fetal and placental tissues and maternal blood or serum to a diagnostic laboratory,” Stokka says. “Contact your veterinarian for assistance with diagnostic efforts, sample submission and identifying management strategies to reduce the risk of future abortions.” D Source: North Dakota State University

GW COMMERCIAL CORNER POST

Asking “Why?” with Systems Thinking: A Powerful Tool for Problem Solving Aaron Berger, Nebraska Extension Beef Educator

Some questions that could be asked in a situation like this are: Why is pinkeye in cattle a problem? Why did this particular calf contract pinkeye when most of its herd mates didn’t? Why is pinkeye a problem now in the herd if it hasn’t been before? What are the organisms that cause pinkeye in cattle?

When an issue occurs in a production system, there is often an effort to fix the problem without fully appreciating the “why” behind the problem.

B

eef production from conception to consumption is a complex, biological system where cause and effect are often distant in time and space. For example, things that occurred to a calf while it was developing inside of a cow, can impact that animal throughout its life all the way to harvest. This can make it challenging to identify and address the actual source of a problem when it is observed. To better understand and address the source of problems, consider asking the question “why?” Asking “why?” can be a very powerful tool in addressing problems. When an issue occurs in a production system, there is often an effort to fix the problem without fully appreciating the “why” behind the problem. Sometimes “why?” needs to be asked multiple times in order to identify the underlying structure at the source of the problem. The principle of asking “why?” has value in understanding the issues facing the beef industry today. Often when problems arise, we seek to treat the symptom of the problem without taking time to identify the source of the problem. For example, a calf gets pinkeye and is treated with an antibiotic to address the problem. The calf improves after treatment and little thought is given as to why the calf got pinkeye initially.

58 | MARCH 2020

What conditions are conducive to pinkeye in cattle? Asking “why?” is one of the fundamental steps to effective problem solving and decision making. In systems thinking, the goal is to understand at a deeper level how systems function. Systems thinking recognizes that there are often hidden and unintended consequences to actions. For example, if a bull is treated for pinkeye and then kept as a herd sire, could that bull’s offspring have a greater likelihood of contracting the disease than those sired by a bull that never had pinkeye? For many people, asking “why?” is one of the first steps in a fundamental shift in thinking that allows people to address problems in new ways. It also reveals that the problems we face today are ones that we unknowingly may have created ourselves. To quote Albert Einstein, “The significant problems we face cannot be solved at the same level of thinking we were at when we created them.” D Source: University of Nebraska-Lincoln

meeting modern industry demands For decades United States consumers have continually recognized the value of superior beef products. Such recognition has driven the growing demand of a superior beef eating experience on a national and global scale. The American Gelbvieh Association’s (AGA) commitment to the consumer and meeting modern industry demands has led to the launch of the Carcass Data Collection Project. The Carcass Data Collection Project is designed for AGA members and their customers. This project is a breed improvement directive, providing vital genetic information to re-charge the carcass database and enhance the predictability of current selection tools. AGA will pay genotyping costs of participating calves, genomic analysis will be completed by Neogen GeneSeek. Recognizing the increased expectations of commercial cattlemen, the AGA is dedicated to delivering the industry with the genetics that are smart, ranch to the rail.

REWARDS and benefits • Larger carcass record database • More powerful genetic improvement tools • Increase predicting power of the genomic panels • Enhanced economic indexes • Improved carcass EPD accuracies
