Anissa 337M
TJB Anissa 337M has been the most influential female in TJB Gelbvieh history. She is truly the epitome of “Matron of Maternal Magic”. Still sound at 19 years of age, her legacy remains embedded in the future for our program. She is currently accountable for 74 females in our herd. Possibly her greatest influence on the Gelbvieh breed will now be seen through the progeny of Rebel Yell (2020 NWSS Grand Champion Bull/2020 Balancer Futurity Champion). His early progeny here put him at the top of any sire group ever used at TJB Gelbvieh. We encourage you to consider adding the genetics of this great female at any of our future genetic opportunities. You will not be disappointed. Visit tjbgelbvieh.com for sale updates!

The Rewards of Calving Season
W
by Dan McCarty
e calve our cows at the mouth of a small canyon on the banks of the Colorado River. You can pretty much set your watch by the fact that at midnight, the prevailing upslope wind from far down the valley on the Utah desert changes direction 180 degrees, and the cold air from high in the Rocky Mountains is pushed lower through the valley by a brisk downslope wind. As that wind works its way down the river and reaches the point where it widens at the mouth of the canyon, the temperature drops dramatically, and the humidity increases. The unique geography of this particular spot on the river isn’t bad when you are changing irrigation water early on a July morning when the temperature hovered close to triple digits the previous afternoon. However, about the first week of February, when our first-calf heifers and most of our cows are synched to calve, “refreshing early morning breeze” is not usually the term that comes to mind. While this might sound like a horrible spot to calve, those continually shifting winds prevent much snow accumulation, which is surprising considering we sit at about 6,000 feet in elevation. This geographic feature is also why I am sitting here at the computer at close to three o’clock in the morning– I just got back in the house after checking on the first-calf heifers in the calving pasture. We usually check them around two and then again at first light because every now and then, it is just cold enough with the downslope wind and increased humidity that if a calf doesn’t get right up, we may have to warm them up to get them going. It doesn’t happen very often, and it didn’t happen tonight. Even though the temperature was hovering around 17 degrees, I found a new calf, nearly dry and on his feet, just starting to nurse. I have been around cows and heifers calving pretty much my entire life, and no matter how many times I’ve witnessed this ritual, it still amazes me every time that a new calf almost always seems to know exactly what to do. Now, don’t get me wrong, every once in a while, you encounter a first calf heifer or a newborn calf that makes you wonder how the

species hasn’t gone extinct. Thankfully, that happens a lot less often with our Gelbvieh and Balancer® cows than it did when I was managing commercial ranches utilizing other breeds in both a three-breed terminal and a twobreed rotation crossbreeding system. While there isn’t a single EPD that will predict the actual mothering ability of a cow, there are many tools available to Gelbvieh and Balancer breeders that want to make genetic improvement on maternal productivity. The heifer pregnancy (HP) EPD, the 30-month pregnancy (Pg30) EPD, the stayability (ST) EPD, and the encompassing $Cow index are all great selection tools available to Gelbvieh and Balancer breeders to increase profitability through maternal genetics. Our breed has a well-earned reputation as a strong maternal breed, and incredible strides have been made in calving ease and birth weight over the past 50 years. We have seen increased demand for Gelbvieh influenced females in commercial operations across the country because, quite frankly, these traits make life just a little bit easier during the 45 days of the year that calves are hitting the ground. The increase in weaning weights our customers see doesn’t hurt either! When you think about all the work it takes – the long nights during calving, long hours in the saddle and tractor seat, countless miles on your pickup dragging a trailer – it is hard not to feel extremely proud. It is hard not to get that unexplainable feeling right between your chest and your stomach when your lot 1 bull walks in the ring at your bull sale or your best female walks into the ring in Oklahoma City, Billings, Louisville, Kansas City, or Denver. Years of decisions – from breeding to feeding to selection – have come full circle as you present what you believe is your best for others to evaluate and determine their worth. Obviously, there is a lot of work to do between now and then, but that may well have been next year’s lot 1 that just got his belly full for the very first time. F

t’s crazy to think what all has happened within the last year. All of us have experienced things that we would have never dreamt of; seeing cities completely shut down, having to wear a mask everywhere we go, conducting all of our meetings virtually, the list goes on and on. While it can be easy to dwell on these things, for me, this time has been a good lesson that there are many things I cannot control. Using this time to reflect on the things I can control and improving on those things has been a silver lining to the whirlwind that has been the past 12 months.

I recently came across a quote by Albert Einstein, “In the middle of every difficulty lies opportunity.” This quote gives a new perspective on difficult times and is a good reminder that there is always opportunity. Maybe that opportunity is to attend a new show, conduct business a different way, or improve our operations by embracing new technology.
Today’s world is fast-paced and ever-changing, and the beef industry is no exception. As we’ve published in previous issues of Gelbvieh World (December 2020 and In many aspects of our lives, we have been forced to January 2021), the AGA’s sale price analysis shows that go through some sort of change or adapt to something producers utilizing technology such as genomic testing, new. Evaluate Bull Body Condition Prior to Breeding by Karla H. Wilke, University of Nebraska-Lincoln Cow/Calf Systems and Stocker Management Although the breeding season for many herds is still a few months away, it is time to be evaluating bull body condition (BC). Body condition is just as important in bulls as it is in cows. Research has shown that bulls in a BC 5-6 have better semen quality than those in a 4 or 7. Much like cows, bull body condition needs to be evaluated as fat cover over the front ribs, brisket, and tail head, making sure that gut fill does not impact the score given. During the breeding season, bulls may lose 100-200 pounds, a translation of 1-2 body condition scores (BCS), making a pre-breeding season BCS of 5.5-6.5 critical. Evaluating bull BCS 90 days before breeding season allows for corrective action before breeding season.

For example, if a 1300 pound yearling bull was fed ~35 pounds of meadow hay that was 56% total digestible nutrients (TDN) and 10% crude protein (CP), he would maintain his weight. He likely wouldn’t gain any weight, though. To add 100 pounds in 90 days, you would need to feed 29.5 pounds of hay (54% TDN, 8% CP) and 14 pounds of corn silage (68% TDN, 8% CP). If you wait until 60 days before breeding, you will need to feed 23 pounds of the millet hay, 27 pounds of corn silage, and 4 pounds of wet distillers grains (108% TDN, 30% CP) to help that same young bull gain 100 pounds. Keep in mind that mature bulls, who often weigh between 1500 and 2000 pounds, will need to be increased accordingly, as well. Additional considerations for helping bulls maintain wellness and gain weight is to use windbreaks and bedding to reduce body heat loss and prevent frostbite on testicles. Many times at weaning when cows are pregnancy checked and producers are disappointed with the results, the assumption is typically that the cows were thin and not cycling well at breeding time. This may be part of the issue, but seldom is the condition of the bulls, prior to breeding, evaluated to see if bull body condition could be a potential issue. Evaluating the body condition score of bulls at least 90 days before breeding and maintaining a BCS of 5.5 to 6.5 through the onset of breeding can help keep bulls active, healthy, and productive throughout the breeding season. Sixty days prior to the start of the breeding season is probably the last chance to increase weight and BCS without a substantial increase in energy feeds. Be proactive about monitoring bull condition, especially young bulls. F

AGA Staff Departure Taylor Buckley, AGA data services coordinator, wrapped her time as a member of the AGA staff on February 4 and offered the following farewell message to the members she has worked with over the years: A member of the association once told me people need a change around every four or five years. The change can be as simple as a new hair style or, as in my case, leaving a current job. I believe the need for change is to help people grow and stay interested in life. For those who do not know, my last day with the American Gelbvieh Association was February 4. It was one of the hardest decisions I have had to make. However, I to need some change and need to grow a different aspect of my life. Throughout my time at AGA, I have met some great people and have learned a lot about the breed and raising seedstock cattle. I will also miss going to AGA events, whether it was seeing everyone in the dead heat of summer at Junior Nationals or in the bitter cold at For assistance in marketing or purchasing Gelbvieh, Balancer ® or Southern Balancer ® bulls, females, and feeder cattle, contact:

GW INDUSTRY PARTNER CONNECTIONS
By Macey Mueller
Thank you to Kansas Livestock Association for contributing to this month’s Industry Partner Connections.
N
ow more than ever, consumers want to know how and where their food is grown. For some Kansas beef producers, that desire for information has opened niche markets for direct-to-consumer sales. From their farm in southeast Kansas, Janet Phillips, her husband, Caleb, and their four children are busy shipping their homegrown Show-Me Kansas Farms beef to customers in-state and across the country each week. The Phillipses run a commercial Angus, Gelbvieh and Balancer® cowherd near Cherryvale and market a majority of their calves through a local auction barn. However, back in 2017, they began looking for additional ways to increase profitability in their operation. That’s when they decided to create a branded beef program and sell individual cuts online. “As consumer demands evolve, some are willing to pay a premium for the beef we grow and sell directly off the farm,” Janet said. “As a farming and ranching family, most of our commodities are sold into the supply chain, so we’re certainly not trying to take away from the safe and wholesome products in the grocery store. We’re simply taking advantage of an additional marketing opportunity. Phillips works with her husband to select animals from the family’s fall and spring calf crops, then staggers finishing and processing times to ensure a steady stock of beef will be available for sale online. Although most of Phillips’ cattle end up going to a major processor, the

beef she sells directly to consumers comes from cattle that spend a minimum of 120 days on feed, then are sent to a local processor. Once processed, the Show-Me Kansas Farms beef is dry-aged for 21 days. “Whether our cattle are bound for the salebarn or our freezers, we use the same quality genetics and herd health protocols,” she said. “We just go the extra mile in the end to produce a dry-aged, premium product with our individual cuts.” Although the family had dreamed of creating their own branded beef company for years, they were careful to develop a detailed business plan before jumping in. Phillips even attended a comprehensive small business workshop hosted by Five Marys Farms in northern California. Ranchers Brian and Mary Heffernan have been selling their home-raised beef, pork and lamb since 2013, and now offer courses to help fellow entrepreneurs build their brands and market and ship their products. “Starting a small business can be intimidating, but this course not only taught me how to build a customer base and efficiently ship a perishable product, but also how to navigate the legal and regulatory side of getting established,” Phillips said. Much like Five Marys Farms, which uses a strong online presence to reach customers, Phillips primarily uses social media to market her beef. She often shares her family’s farm story on her @showmekansasfarms Instagram account. “We’re open and honest about how and when we use antibiotics and why we finish our cattle on corn,” she said. “We’ve found our customers want to ‘buy into

INDUSTRY PARTNER CONNECTIONS GW our farm’ – they want to know what’s going on during different seasons; they want to see our kids involved in the operation – and using social media to share that story has been very valuable in setting us apart.” Phillips also has worked closely with the Kansas Department of Agriculture (KDA) to follow proper inspection and licensing regulations. KDA Deputy Secretary Kelsey Olson said over the past few years her office has seen an increased interest from producers looking to sell directly to consumers, and even more so with the onset of the coronavirus pandemic earlier this year. “As difficult as this pandemic has been, it has definitely provided an opportunity for producers to connect with consumers directly and not only sell their beef, but also educate them about what’s happening on their farms,” Olson said. “Whether they’re buying their beef in the grocery store or off the ranch, people want to feel good about the choices they are making, and building those connections with the people growing their food has never been more significant to them.” The KDA website provides step-by-step instructions for navigating the inspection and licensing process. In many instances, producers selling wholesale or retail beef are required to register with the Kansas Secretary of State, undergo annual KDA inspections and purchase a $25 license each year. Wholesale and retail beef also are required to be processed under inspection at a licensed facility. More information can be found online at agriculture.ks.gov/kda-services/licensing-guides. Olson said the KDA Agricultural Marketing Team also is available to help fine-tune business plans, assist in developing USDA-approved product labels and connect producers with other helpful resources across the state. In addition to marketing and licensing, another component of Phillips’ original business plan included finding a processor who could offer value-added services to help set her product apart, including being USDAinspected to sell across state lines, dry-aging the beef and custom packaging. Show-Me Kansas Farms beef is processed at two different plants, and Phillips said when the pandemic initially hindered the beef supply chain and many ranchers turned to local processors, she relied on the relationships she had built with them to secure slaughter dates through the end of 2021.
Those types of relationships are just as important to the processor. Aaron Higbie, who owns Santa Fe Trail Meats in Overbrook, said when his appointment book began to fill up in the spring, he reached out to regular customers to ensure they had enough slots booked to meet demand. “When the national packers went through their series of shutdowns and slowdowns, it definitely put pressure on us smaller plants,” he said. “We’re not just dealing with boxed beef that’s a short hangtime and aging in the box on the trucks and the warehouses. We slaughter, hang and dry-age all our carcasses right here for 14 to 21 days, and there’s only so much cooler space to do that. We’re trying to turn out the absolute best product we can for our customers.” Higbie said the wholesale processing business in his state-inspected facility has really expanded over the past five to 10 years. They process about 18 head a week and regularly work with customers who are merchandising beef through grocery stores and farmers’ markets or off the farm. “All our wholesale customers have different cutting instructions, packaging requirements and marketing goals, and we try to work with them to meet their customers’ demands, while also realizing as much value as possible out of an animal,” he said. Overall, Phillips said selling her family’s home-raised beef has been rewarding, but not without its challenges, especially as they try to grow their small business during a pandemic. During the early stages of the coronavirus and the subsequent beef supply chain disruptions, Show-Me Kansas Farms experienced a significant increase in sales, but like so many producers trying to make management decisions, the family is uncertain about the future. “It’s a little tricky to know how to proceed right now because we’ve had such a boom in sales the past six months, but we don’t know if those customers are going to make regular purchases or if they were just worried about the availability of beef in the stores at the time,” she said. “My husband and I tend to be the ‘go big or go home’ type, so we’ll continue to work hard and make adjustments to best serve our customers and meet our goals.” F Macey Mueller is a freelance agricultural writer from Halstead, where she and her husband stay busy raising cattle, crops and kids. Follow her family’s farm adventures on Instagram at @macey.mueller.

PHS ProHart Ol’ Glory 935G is a 94.9% purebred Gelbvieh bull sired by OGSG Centurion 120C. He was born on July 4, 2019, and is homozygous polled. PHS ProHart Ol’ Glory 935G ranks in the top 2% of the breed for marbling and FPI EPDs, top 15% in calving ease and top 10% for birth weight. His dam, PHS Prohart Brandy 516C weaned him with a 858 adjusted weaning weight. Additionally, his genetics offer the fertility and longevity Gelbvieh is known for.
28 | MARCH 2021
TAU Rush 110H ET, owned by Taubenheim Gelbvieh, Amherst, Nebraska, was one of the runners-up. He is a 99.9% purebred Gelbvieh bull sired by KCF Bennett E158. TAU Rush 110H ET combines a powerful and eyeappealing phenotype with growth and carcass EPDs. His dam, TAU Ms Gunnison 106R 3051A, is the mother of previous Balancer futurity champion, TAU Weight Up 98E. HFTG Hilltops Haweye H064, owned by Hilltop Farms, Asbury, Missouri, is the 89.3% purebred Gelbvieh bull sired by HTFM Mr Equalizer E711 who claimed the other runner-up in this year’s futurity. Described as ultra-correct in his lines and sound from the ground up while still maintaining a herd bull “look”, Hawkeye’s dam is a former champion of both the Missouri State Fair and Tulsa State Fair. The champion bull sold for $13,000 to Chimney Butte Ranch, Mandan, North Dakota, and Bar T Bar Ranch, Winslow, Arizona, for full possession and half semen interest in the National Gelbvieh and Balancer Sale held on Tuesday evening at the Cattlemen’s Congress. The Gelbvieh futurity holds a drawing among members to win the proceeds from the sale of the champion bull. Ridinger Cattle Co. and JP Triple K Gelbvieh, Deer Trail, Colorado, won the proceeds from this year’s sale. The futurity is limited to 53 membership slots. Spots only come available when an operation does not renew their membership. F

GW JUNIOR CONNECTION
Finding a Protocol That Fits Your Herd by Danielle Stock
Every operation has different values and primary goals. You might focus on raising cattle with superior carcass traits, which perform best on the rail. The center of your attention could be producing maternally productive cattle. Maybe your values lie with producing eye appealing cattle to excel in the show ring. No matter your operation’s goal, every operation has one fundamental value: maintaining herd health. Now, herd health is not like a recipe out of a cookbook. A protocol that works for me in northeast Iowa may not work for you in the Sandhills of Nebraska or Texas Panhandle. To develop the perfect recipe for your operation, start by thinking about the environment you live in and your cattle’s production cycle. What will the weather be like when you are calving, breeding, or weaning? What types of facilities do I have? How easy is it for me to treat a sick or injured animal? After you have thought about these questions, the next step is to talk to your local veterinarian. Your discussion should focus on the prevention, intervention, and treatment of different diseases that your operation will encounter throughout the year. A veterinarian may recommend recording the protocol in a 12-month system. A calendar system can help you determine when you need to vaccinate in advance, which will help you know when you need to purchase vaccines or know how long a vaccine can last if you run more than one herd. You may be wondering when and what do most other operations vaccinate. According to many universities,

there are three main times to vaccinate your cow herd. The first one being 45 to 60 days out from the start of your calving window. One generally immunizes their cowherd for infectious bovine rhinotracheitis, bovine viral diarrhea, Clostridium perfringens, and Escherichia coli at this time. These vaccinations help prevent abortions and diseases from occurring. Next, cattle should be vaccinated 30 to 60 days before breeding season for Vibriosis and Leptospirosis. These diseases can affect the reproductive efficiency of our herd. Lastly, we have preconditioning vaccinations. Most calves are vaccinated for infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR), bovine viral diarrhea (BVD), bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV), parainfluenza virus 3 (PI-3), seven-way Clostridia, Mannheimia haemolytica, and Histophilus somni. These help the calf ’s immune system when going through the most stressful experience of its life. Though this may look like many vaccines must be given throughout the year, many are combined to make fewer injections per animal. Remember, this is just a list of general vaccinations given by the majority of producers. Maintaining optimal herd health should always be top-of-mind. After all, we are in charge of our animals’ well-being. You and your veterinarian should work together to determine which vaccination protocol best fits your operation. You may have to add or delete vaccinations depending on location and year. The critical thing to remember is a preventative herd health plan cannot start to help your herd until you have taken the first step. F

Inaugural Cattlemen’s Congress AGJA Recap By Danielle Stock
A
s I walked out of the ring in Oklahoma City, I was flooded with emotions. A fun week spent with family and friends had come to a close. Yes, I was definitely tired of standing. Yes, I was ready to take off my mask, but most importantly, I stood there thinking of how proud I was of our membership. We had 75 junior members make it to the National Gelbvieh Show, in a new location on a new week. We had junior members show in their first Gelbvieh show and some show in their last. While some focused on showing cattle, others directed their attention to fitting cattle behind the scenes. There were even a few juniors who purchased or sold animals for the first time in the National Sale.
Speaking of the National Sale, the American Gelbvieh Junior Association (AGJA) broke another [recent] record for the number of heifer tickets sold! I want to thank the Beastrom Ranch for donating BEA Ms Sweepstakes 1000H to the junior association and for their hard work displaying her in Oklahoma City. Thank you to every junior who sold tickets. Lastly, a big thank you to every individual who purchased a ticket; your love and support of our organization never goes unnoticed. Overall, everyone should be impressed by the leadership and growth that AGJA showed throughout the week. I cannot wait to see what else we can accomplish together this year!
Hammer Awarded Eagle Pass Ranch Female for All-Around Award Eagle Pass Ranch, Highmore, South Dakota, continued the tradition of providing a great incentive for American Gelbvieh Junior Association (AGJA) members participating in events at the AGJA Junior Classic.
The All-Around Award is determined through participation at the junior classic show. The member that earns the most points for participation and placing in junior classic contests receives this honor.
Eagle Pass Ranch donated a heifer to the All-Around winner at the 2020 AGJA Route 66 Classic, Springfield, Missouri, this past summer. This year’s winner Justine Pope, Ravenna Nebraska, recognized at the 2021 National Gelbvieh and Balancer® Sale at the Cattlemen’s Congress in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
Eagle Pass Ranch has been a long-time supporter of the AGJA. Without their support an award like this would not be possible. Thank you, Eagle Pass Ranch! F

2020-2021 Ring of Gold Champions Announced It goes without saying 2020 was not the year we had all hoped for regarding livestock shows. Be it the county, regional, state, or national level, the quantity of shows held across the U.S. decreased substantially. The shows that were able to forge through and safely offer a place to exhibit the hard work and genetics of Gelbvieh and Balancer® producers did not go unnoticed. In a year full of uncertainty, it is imperative that we remain grateful for the opportunities had throughout the 2020-2021 year. Throughout the 2020-2021 show year, Gelbvieh and Balancer females and bulls competed at shows across the country to earn points for the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) Ring of Gold program. Each year the qualifying animals are ranked at the conclusion of the National Gelbvieh and Balancer show, which took place this year at the inaugural Cattlemen’s Congress held in Oklahoma City, on January 6, 2021.
Balancer female and Balancer bull based on points awarded throughout the year. Animals must earn points in at least two shows to qualify for Ring of Gold points each year. The 2020-2021 Ring of Gold qualified shows included the American Royal, North American International Livestock Exposition, and Cattlemen’s Congress.
Congratulations to the following entries and exhibitors: Champion Gelbvieh Female: • Entry: BCFG Butlers Ms Gia 90G ET • Exhibited by: Alexandria Raab, Markle, Indiana
Champion Gelbvieh Bull: • Entry: JNCC 0242H Sundance Kid ET
The AGA established the Ring of Gold program to honor the top animals shown at the conclusion of the show year. Points are earned for grand and reserve champions, as well as division champions and reserves, and are based on the actual number of animals shown at each show.
• Exhibited by: Sarah Carroll, Raymore, Missouri
To honor those animals who have risen to the top during the show season, the Ring of Gold awards are presented to the top Gelbvieh female, Gelbvieh bull,

GW REGISTRY TIPS ‘N TRICKS
Herd Assessment Deadline Approaches
March 15, 2021, marks the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) herd assessment deadline. Members can complete their herd assessments on the AGA Online Registry Service.
2021 Herd Assessment Run-Down • Active membership required: Active AGA membership status is required to assess the herd and register calves. If there are associated herds linked to one account, all accounts must be up-to-date. •
Herd assessment rate is $25 for females over 13 months of age: The yearly fee allows members to register calves, transfer ownership, and report additional data.
• One herd assessment credit equals one calf registration: Registrations for natural born multiple birth calves (twins) can be completed at no additional charge. In order to register additional embryo transfer (ET) calves, an additional $25 fee for each ET calf will be applied. If embryos have been sold to other members, the embryos must be transferred into the new owners embryo inventory to avoid registration problems and/or a customer using the donor cow’s herd assessment credit designated for a natural calf.
44 | MARCH 2021
•
Heifer exposure data required: Complete exposure data for all heifers that are expected to have their first calve in 2021. Check “PE”, which stands for pasture exposed, “AI”, if they were artificially inseminated or “No” if they were not exposed. This data will be used to strengthen the AGA’s heifer pregnancy (HP) expected progeny difference (EPD). Simply recording exposure and calving data can easily track heifer fertility throughout the AGA registry.
•
Inactive cows can be re-activated: If a cow has been previously disposed of on a member’s inventory, the animal can be reactivated. In order to do so, the member will be charged $25 for every year the cow has remained inactive. For example, if the female was dropped from the herd in 2019, the member will pay $25 for each year (2019, 2020, and 2021) in order to register a 2021-born calf. Please contact the AGA office to reactivate cows.
•
Assessing non-Gelbvieh or Balancer females who will produce Gelbvieh-influenced calves: To enroll a bull or female from another breed association, email the registration number from the breed of origin to the office at registry@gelbvieh.org. Please include whether or not you are the owner of that particular animal. To use this bull or female in the AGA Online
Registry, use the original registration number with the corresponding international breed code. A few commonly used breeds include:
American Angus
= AMAN
Red Angus
= AMAR
Canadian Gelbvieh = CDGV
Simmental
= AMSM
Limousin
= AMLM
Hereford
= AMHH
(Horned or Polled)
•
Late fees do apply to herd assessments: If herd assessments aren’t complete by the March 15, 2021, deadline for 2021 herd assessments, the following penalty fees will be applied to the account.

GW FEATURE
Finding the Value in Sex-Sorted Semen By Laura Handke
I
n a recent Beef Reproductive Taskforce webinar, Texas A&M professor Dr. Cliff Lamb shared research the task force has conducted over the past several years that looks at the efficacy and economic viability of using sex-sorted (sexed) semen. “The advantage of sexed semen is that you can select for a gender of your preference at a fairly high accuracy of greater than 90%,” Lamb says. “You also remove a lot of defective sperm through the sorting process, so most of the sperm in a straw of sexed semen is more normal than a lot of the defective sperm in a conventional straw of semen.” Unfortunately, the technology also carries disadvantages that should be weighed before investing. Using sexed semen is more expensive than conventional semen and, more importantly and costly, fertility is lower than conventional semen, typically to the tune of 10-20%. The technology also lacks an official timed protocol. These disadvantages, or rather the solution to these disadvantages, hasn’t been fast-tracked because of the slow adoption rates of sexed semen in the beef industry—a catch-22.
46 || MARCH MARCH 2021 2021
“For us to be able to increase the adoption of sexed semen, we need protocols. It’s imperative for beef cattle producers to get as high of pregnancy rates as possible and as early in the breeding season as possible,” Lamb shares, noting that the technology won’t be widely adopted until conception rates can, at least, reach those of conventional semen. Lamb says that most of the data indicate that waiting longer to AI a cow with sexed semen carries a greater conception percentage. “By adding the pre-synchronization and delaying time to AI to 72 hours, rather than 54 hours, we see about a 9.2% increase,” Lamb says. The task force has also investigated the economic viability of utilizing sexed semen. The team created a decision tool they plan to release to aid producers in determining whether or not sexed semen is the right fit, economically, for their operation. The tool calculates a series of required producer-provided inputs to derive a profitability value. For example, required inputs may be the number of heifers, the number of cleanup bulls, desired sex of the calf you want, and the premium expected by a live calf of the desired sex on the ground. These become the fixed values. Cost over-and-above conventional semen is also a consideration.
FEATURE GW “One thing I do want to point out,” Lamb says, “is that in our experiments, we assessed that for sorted semen to be more profitable, the perceived premium was that heifers had to be worth $154 more dollars per head. That’s what you had to get for those heifers to pay for utilizing sexed semen.” Lamb says that his personal recommendation, based on the research he has conducted, is to use the sexed semen for cows that have demonstrated and expressed estrous, with a focus on the heat detection protocols located in the back of every semen catalog. For a timed AI solution, when mass-mating a lot of heifers, Lamb recommends the following protocol: Pre-synchronize all heifers with an injection of prostaglandin seven days before putting a CIDR in and give GnRH. Then, seven days later, pull the CIDR and give the prostaglandin injection; 72 hours later, time AI all heifers and give another GnRH injection. Estrous detection is also recommended. “When you give an injection of prostaglandin and remove the CIDR, use an estrus detection patch, and any animal that has an activated patch by the time of AI, inseminate that heifer with sexed semen,” Lamb instructs producers, “and any heifer that does not have an activated patch, use conventional semen in those animals.” Lamb also shares the advantages and challenges of using sexed semen in an embryo transfer (ET) program. While the clear advantage of using sexed semen in
Multiple Ovulation Embryo Transfer (MOET) programs is to achieve more of one gender after superovulation, the success is limited. “There’s a reduced number of viable embryos; there’s a greater number of unfertilized ova, and there is a decrease in the quality grades of embryos,” Lamb warns, sharing that a delay in the use of sexed semen and AI in ET has also shown positive results. “One of the things this group has found is that by delaying the use of sexed semen and AI at 18 to 30 hours after estrous in donor cows, versus 12 to 24 hours, seems to increase the number of transferrable embryos—it increases the number of freezable embryos and decreases the number of unfertilized embryos, but still does not increase those numbers to the same as what conventional numbers would look like.” Finally, Lamb says that the process of sex-sorting is hard on semen. Some bulls’ semen withstand the process better than others. “We see a lot more variation from bull to bull with sexed semen than we do with conventional semen; this is especially noticeable in embryo transfer and IVF protocols,” he says. “I think there is some micro-damage that we cannot detect through normal semen quality standard evaluation methods.” At the end of the day, Lamb says that the Beef Reproductive Taskforce is getting a lot closer to achieving conventional semen conception rates.
