2010 Maternal Edge Commercial Female Sale Dear Friends, Welcome to the 4th Annual Maternal Edge Commercial Female Sale. It is with pleasure we are providing you an opportunity to purchase these quality Gelbvieh influenced females. Again this year we are offering a nice mix of cow/calf pairs, bred cows, bred heifers, and spring/fall opens. All of the cattle in this sale have been screened to ensure quality, disposition, and performance potential. New for this year, we will be offering 14 nice Gelbvieh and Balancer bulls. All of these bulls are eligible for Kentucky and Tennessee cost-share programs. The demand for Gelbvieh influenced females continues to grow each year as commercial cattleman realize their maternal advantages. As my dad used say ―you can breed a Gelbvieh to anything and it will make it better.‖ Gelbvieh influenced females have developed a reputation for bringing a lot to the table! Their maternal advantages, superior growth, milking ability, and efficiency add to the bottom line of any operation. To the commercial producer it takes pounds to make dollars…..the Gelbvieh mama will make you the pounds. Thank you for your interest and support as this sale continues to grow and become a premier market place for Gelbvieh influenced females in the Southeast. Sincerely, The Maternal Edge Sale committee Steve Peddicord 606-688-4492

Consignors Bio’s continued: David Bates—Duck River Gelbvieh 1845 Totty’s Bend Road Duck River, TN 38454 (931) 729-4092 David Bates and family started Duck River Gelbvieh in 1994 when their son became interested in showing heifers. Docile disposition and maternal instincts attracted them to the breed. Duck River consists of 45 cows of which about 75% are sired by A I bulls. Duck River joined Seedstock Plus in Spring of 2009 with the intent to develop & market bulls & females. Duck River will participate in the 2nd annual Seedstock Plus TN region Bull & Female Sale to be held in Columbia, TN on February 5, 2011 in conjunction with the Tennessee Livestock producers. Brad Burke—Full Circle Farm 989 Metcalf Mill Rd Ewing, KY 41039 (606)267-5609, (606)759-5930 Fax: (606)759-5934 Email: gbb789@windstream.net Full Circle Gelbvieh is a small purebred operation in Northeastern Kentucky (Ewing). Our first Gelbvieh females were purchased in 1999. We practice a ―quality over quantity‖ approach. Currently we maintain 25 fall calving cows. All cows are synchronized and AI’ed to homozygous black Gelbvieh bulls to constantly infuse new genetics into our herd. Our cow herd is culled each year with longevity being a key selection trait. If a cow has poor disposition, unsound feet, legs, or udder, or doesn’t wean an acceptable calf every 12 months, her longevity at Full Circle is very short! We invite your phone call or visit any time. Butts Livestock 10819 Dawson Road Princeton, KY 42445 (270) 625-4700 David & Wayne Butts operate a 140 head commercial cow operation and a 50 head cow purebred operation. They own & lease 800 acres in Caldwell & Lyon counties in Kentucky. Their purebred operation is called D & W Farms, Butts Livestock composes the commercial heard that retains many of their home raised females.

Consignors Bio’s continued: Chad (Richard) Dunnavant—Dunnavant Farms 31306 Gowan Rd. Ardmore, TN 38449 (931)427-3722 Email: codunnavant@ardmore.net I started with Gelbvieh about 8 yrs ago using bulls on my commercial cows. The off-spring impressed me so much I decided to raise purebred Gelbvieh and I’ve never looked back I’ve raised beef cattle my entire life on family farms. We now have 60 registered cows and 100 commercial cows. I believe a cow should earn her keep, and work as hard for me as I do for her. Gelbvieh can do just that. Don Estes—Bar None Ranch (Fredonia, KY) Retirement from a corporate life and the desire to get back to my roots I purchased a farm near Marion NC in fall of 1991. Commercial cattle were purchased while considering some breed of registered cattle. We purchased a registered Gelbvieh bull and saw a great improvement in the calves from these common cows. We liked the growth, muscle, milk, and docile nature of the cattle. David Slaughter currently manages a portion of our herd in KY. Our goal is to provide breeders with cattle that will produce profitable results. The heifers we have brought to Cross Plains would be a good starting place for new herds. Wally Gilliam—Gilliam Farms P.O. Box 402 Moreland, TN 37148 (615) 418-7095 Our 2nd Generation family owned and operated farm is located in Northern Middle Tennessee and raise purebred Gelbvieh and Balancer cattle. Visitors are always welcome. Nathan S Groce—Groce Farm 1669 Speck Rd. Albany, KY 42602 (606)387-4463, (431)397-8808 Email: nsgroce21@tntech.edu Groce Farm operates 150 acres in Albany, Kentucky with a cow base of 55. Over the years our farm has been mainly Angus cattle. However after purchasing some Gelbvieh cows, I feel that Balancers are what producers should be focusing on to increase weaning weights and yearling weights. We have bulls and heifers for sale throughout the year right off the farm. Douglas E Hughes—Little Windy Hill Farms 6916 Peppers Ferry Rd. Max Meadows, VA 24360 (276)637-3916, (276)620-4271 Fax: (276)637-4345 Email: lwhf@wiredog.com

Consignors Bio’s continued: Little Windy Farms started raising Gelbvieh cattle in 1990 with the purchase of a group of black and red purebred cows and a bull named 6E, he did an outstanding job making great cows and bulls all over the country through AI. Now we have around 90 to 100 momma cows both PB Gelbvieh and PB Angus which we AI for purebred calves in each breed, then we cross breed with clean up bulls after AI to make Balancers. Our bull power for cleanup are also AI Sires and our Sr. Gelbvieh herd sire is Post Rock Granite 200P2 which we own jointly with our very good friends Jerry & Karen Wilson at J&K Gelbvieh. Our Sr. Angus Herd Sire is RITO 7079 who is a tremendous sire also. Each year we sale approximately 15 to 20 bred heifers and approximately 40 Gelbvieh Angus and Balancer bulls to commercial and purebred buyers through consignment sales, VA Bull Test Stations, You-Pick-Em-Bull, and Select heifer Sale at our farm. This year’s sale will is on Saturday, December 4, 2010. Raymond Jones, Jr.—G.W .Jones & Sons Farm 401 Franklin Street. Huntsville, AL 35801 (256)508-6988, (256)882-6560 We began breeding Red Balancer Bulls to our Red Angus/Hereford cows in 1994 and have continued this practice to date. Today we have a near 50% balancer calf. G.W. Jones & Sons Farms was established in 1939. Since then the farm has been a leader in the beef industry and has won numerous awards reflecting its heritage. Some of these awards include the Prestigious 2010 BIF ―Outstanding Commercial Producer Award‖, The Lancaster Sunbelt Expo ―Farmer of the Year‖, NCBA Environmental Stewardship Award Winner for Region II and the Alabama Farm of Distinction. G.W. Jones & Sons Farms has been a leader in performance record keeping and analysis systems. Performance records on our commercial cattle date back to the early 1970’s. Individual performance records today are tracked by the latest computer technology available. Kyler, David & Joe Nell—Kyler Farms 3449 South Rd. Cadiz, KY 42211 (270)522-6743, (270)522-6716 Fax: (270)522-3207 Email: kylerbridge@gmail.com

Kyler Farms, owned by David and Jo Nell Kyler is located near Cadiz, Kentucky. The Kylers bought their first Gelbvieh in 1991 and have continued to develop a herd of purebred and Balancer genetics. They have used AI to improve their herd over the years.

Consignors Bio’s continued: Roy Ladd 2710 Mt. Vernon Rd. Chapel Hill, TN 37034 (931)364-7818, (615)477-2630 We began using Balancer bulls in June 2008 and are very pleased with our decision. Charles Lee—The Yellow Wood Farm 4641 Hwy 76 Cottontown, TN 37048 (615)260-1493 We have gradually added Gelbvieh genetics to our herd for the past 4 years. We particularly like the disposition of Gelbvieh cows and their milking ability. The Yellow Wood Farm is 176 acres of pasture. We also own a separate 26 acre tract where we live. Heifers are weaned at about 6 months of age and kept on the home place until breeding age. Billy Don Martin—4-M Farms 159 Paradise Rd. Judsonia, AR 72081 (501)728-3004 (501)230-1590 4-M Farms originated with purebred Hereford cattle in 1936. In 1982 they began using Gelbvieh bulls to develop Gelbvieh-Hereford Balancer females Today 4-M runs a 35 head cow base of which about 15 are registered Herefords. They calve in both Spring and Fall groups. Hereford bulls and Balancer females are available throughout the year off the farm. David Martin—Martin Cattle Company 256 Boyce Rd. Judsonia, AR 72081 (501)728-4950, (501)278-7614 Email: martincattleco@alltel.net We started using Gelbvieh bulls in 1989 and liked the breed so well that we have graded up to a purebred herd. We produce cattle that will work for the commercial cattleman. Our purebred cows are treated like commercial cows. Our farm is a 6 generation family farm consisting of 100 head of Gelbvieh, Balancer, and crossbred females.

Steve Peddicord—Springhaven Farms, Inc. 4737 KY Hwy 639 S. Albany, KY 42602 (606) 688-4492 Springhaven Farm Inc. was formed in 1992, owned and operated by Steve & Carol Peddicord. A fescue forage base that uses intensive grazing techniques along with a series of spring development water systems supplies the cow herd. Emphasis is placed on developing bred replacement heifers using Gelbvieh, and Red Angus crosses.. Steer Calves are co-mingled with Balancer calves of the other local producers to form load lots. Barry & Beth Racke—Bar IV Livestock 7416 Tippenhauer Road Cold Spring, KY 41076 (859) 991-1992 Bar IV Livestock is a true family operation in northern Kentucky (about 5 miles south of Cincinnati, OH). This will be the 2nd year Bar IV Livestock has consigned to the Maternal Edge Sale.

Jerry Wilson—J & K Farms 335 Gelbvieh Lane Ava, IL 62907-2421 (618)426-3885 ,(618)521-8620 Email: jkgf@egyptian.net Having worked with cattle since 1988, I became interested in Gelbvieh cattle while managing a crossbred herd of 500 cows. I grew tired of buying bulls which resulted in offspring that needed to be pulled or wouldn’t grow well. My research led me to purchase my first Gelbvieh cows. I began to use the Gelbvieh bulls which I raised to sire the cross-bred cows. These calves continued to do very well in the feed lots. My wife and I now have a herd of 150 Gelbvieh cows. Sires running in our pastures include JKGF 55R Trendsetter, and Granite 200P2. Last year we also had Carolina 5003n. This year we have added Lazy TV Beech Jet and Black Impact 3960N.

Bull Consigners: Todd Bickett DVM—TJ Bickett Genetics (706) 375-6586 TJB Gelbvieh is owned and operated by Todd J. Bickett DVM and his wife Alisa. They have been involved in the Gelbvieh breed since 1988. Although TJB Gelbvieh dispersed their major cow herd in 2006, they have been rebuilding with a few select donors since that time. The focus at TJB Gelbvieh has never changed as the emphasis has always been placed on the elite Gelbvieh females, the strength of the breed! Dr. Bickett also operates Bickett Genetics, Inc., a full service on farm and in clinic embryo transfer service. Visit us at www.tjbgelvbieh.com as well as www.bickettgenetics.com for more information.

Mike Moore—Gentle G Farm ( Annville, KY) (606) 438-3261 I have worked with Gelbvieh for about 19 years. I like their disposition and the way they grow. Gentle G Farms has been home to the Gelbvieh breed since 1991. Currently, we are running a 50 cow herd on 250 acres. Red and Black registered Gelbvieh bulls and heifers from some of the top Gelbvieh sires. Selling private treaty also.

Bull consigners continued: Seedstock Plus is a group of likeminded cattle producers that want to be able to provide more to their customers than just live animals on one day a year. Breeder/Members agree to rules and pay a fee to belong and they also agree to market all of their bulls through the program minus the culls. This gives the members the advantage of being able to compare their genetics to other producers in an unbiased environment. The group feels it is very important to provide the customer with the highest level of information possible and this includes genetic defect tests when necessary, DNA tests by Igenity, BVD PI testing, ultrasound measuring and complete breeding soundness evaluation. We can help you figure out how to best utilize all the data and where to place the most importance for your program. John Burbank, CEO Seedstock Plus * 877-486-1160
