PRESIDENT’S VIEW
Committees’ Part in Future Growth I will start with finance. I have gained a thorough understanding of this committee after serving as treasure for the past two years. The only time we talked about the budget was during the August board meeting, and it was only for the next year. In the future I can see the importance of a budget extended out to let’s say three years. If we assume a growth projection, that will require the promotion, breed improvement and member education committees to also come up with ways to meet this projected growth. Our membership has the knowledge, resources and forward thinking, if asked, to come up with the solutions.
One of the strong attributes of the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) since the beginning has been the use and participation of the committees that are in place. By Neal Pearson MYRON AND I have completed the assignments for the upcoming year. Those who have been placed on a committee, I hope you have accepted the assignment. I would also encourage anyone who wants to serve on a committee to let us know for next term’s consideration. In regards to the committee structure itself, some changes have been made that pertain to the leadership and how they will be operating. Addressing the committee system is nothing new. What I would like to address is their relevancy as it pertains to the strategic plan and our long-term goals. In the past, our committees met or had a conference call once, maybe twice a year. These were the result of the board’s direction, specifically where the board was seeking input regarding a certain issue. In the future I would like to see this change. For some of the committees this will be different and for others there roles will stay pretty much the same. AGA Committee List: Finance Breed Promotion Member Education Breed Improvement National Show Rules and Bylaws National Sale The committees where I feel the most change can occur are finance, promotion, breed improvement and member education. These four committees are the ones that have the most influence on AGA’s future growth potential. When we analyze these four committees they are directly tied to each other. The decisions made by any one of them have an effect on what the others do. 6 | MAY 2015
As I stated in a previous article, now is the best opportunity for the AGA to grow. This growth will require the combined effort of the staff, board, committee members and the entire membership. No one has a crystal ball, but when ideas present themselves, they need to be discussed and given serious thought. Realize that not all will become a reality, but we owe these ideas their due diligence and the effort of the committee’s to which it falls into. An idea lost, is lost forever. An idea given thought has the chance to become reality. FFF

REGISTRY TIPS N TRICKS
It’s Transfer Season The Spring 2015 sale season is winding down. Now it’s time to transfer animals into the buyers’ names. By Dolores Gravley COMPLETING THIS PROCESS is free and provides
buyers with access to the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) long after they leave your sale. Transfer of ownership provides the buyer with their animal’s genetic information as well as a free, yearlong subscription to Gelbvieh World and The Profit Picture publications.
Form. If you do not have a buyer’s number, click on shaded box to the left of Amount 100. You will now be in “Buyer Search”.
6. Enter the buyer’s zip code and click on “Find Profiles”. A list of names and addresses will appear in alphabetical order by first name or Farm/ Ranch name.
The AGA registry provides a quick and easy format for transferring animals into the buyers’ accounts. Below are the step-by-step directions to assist you in making the first step to providing excellent post-sale customer service. I have also included a brief description on how to look up past customers. This would be a great way to compare buyer lists from this year and previous years to see which buyers are repeat customers and those in which you might need to focus on contacting before next year’s sale.
How to Transfer An Animal 1. Log on to your account. 2. Click on “View” under Work Menu (upper left corner). You will now be at the “General Profile Information” page. 3. Click on the “All” tab (under the Map tab). This will list all your animals. You can sort the animals by tattoo (click on “Tattoo”) or by registration number (click on “Reg #). 4. Find the animal(s) you want to transfer, go to the right of the animal’s column. Click on “Transfer” (in grey area). The “Transfer” tab will now change to “Queued”. 5. Go to Work Menu (upper left corner) and click on “Herd Mgmt” then on “Transfer Animals”. You now will be in the Transfer Entry

BREED PROMOTION MINUTE
The Decisions You Make Today Will Determine Your Future think about this. If you have been selling a large numbers of bulls sired by your herd sire, your current customers may need an outcross to your popular herd sire. They may need calving ease bulls to breed to the daughter of the last bull they bought from you. These are just a couple of examples. You also need to think about what the commercial cow-calf producers will need in two years. With the continued consolidation of the U.S. cowherd I would guess the professional cow-calf operator will demand the highest quality bulls you can produce. Quality can mean different things to different people. But, I can’t imagine the fundamentals of beef cattle production changing a lot in the next two years. I don’t think people will wake up one day and say, “I sure miss pulling calves, I want a huge birth weight bull this year.” Or, “I wish my calves didn’t weigh so much at weaning.” High calving ease and high performance will always be important traits. Also, carcass traits will continue to be very important. Over the next two years we expect to see the total U.S. cow numbers increase at a steady pace. It will be interesting to see how added beef supply will affect the Choice-Select spread. The big question remains; is a beef small supply keeping the Choice-Select spread closer than it would be with more beef to choose from?
Have you ever said, “I should have bought that farm or ranch back in the 1980’s when it was for sale. I would be set.” Or, “I if I would have bought Walmart stock back in the 1990’s I would be rich.” By William McIntosh TWENTY OR 30 years ago those exact opportunities presented themselves but at the time but who knew that land or the stock market would appreciate at the rate they did. I think everyone has said something to that effect at some point in their life. It’s always easy to look back and see what you should have done in the past that would have made you more successful today. It’s also easy to look back and see what may have seemed insignificant at the time now has a huge impact on where you are today. Maybe what seemed like a simple conversation lead to an opportunity that got you where you are today. It’s also easy to look back after you sell your calves and see what sires worked well for the traits your customers saw as valuable. In hindsight it’s also easy to see things you wished you had done differently. I know this sounds very cliché, but today is tomorrow’s past. It’s true, the decisions you make today will determine your future. As we move into spring there are lots of things that we all have to think about. Spring breeding season, planting crops and making hay, just to name a few. Too often cattle producers don’t pay enough attention to making sound, well thought-out breeding decisions in this busy time of year. In 2017 you will be marketing the results of the matings you are making today. So in other words, the day breeding season starts at your operation is the start of your 2017 sale cattle. Now is the time to do what you will wish you had done two years from now. The questions you have to ask is; what will my customers need in 2017? Also, what will be some economic factors that will affect profitability in 2017? What traits will not only your customers, but also prospective customers need in 2017? You need to really
10 | MAY 2015
Maternal efficiency will continue to be a large profit driver in the future. The cattle that produce more with less input will be the ones that will be the most profitable. We will continue to see land prices increase due to pressure from row crop production and urban development. Across the country we see cattle producers that would increase the size of their operations if they could find the pasture to buy or rent, at a reasonable price. Cows that maintain a moderate mature size thus requiring less feed coupled with the ability to wean a big calf will always be profitable. As we go into the spring breeding season take the time to study your cowherd to determine what traits you may need to bring into focus. After all, the success of your 2017 sale season depends on what you do today. FFF

BITS ‘N PIECES DNA Testing Requirements for Natural Service Sires of 2016 Born Calves
Did You Know?
According to a new rule passed by the AGA Board of Directors in August 2014, all pasture sires used in the 2015 breeding season are now required to have a Genomic Option #2 (GGP-LD) test and the associated Genomic Enhanced EPDs (GE-EPDs) in order for their 2016 born calves to be recorded in the AGA Herdbook.
From January 1 to March 31, 2015 AGA members have attracted 369 NEW buyers of registered Gelbvieh and Balancer® cattle during the spring 2015 sale season.
Start planning ahead and DNA testing your bulls now so that recording 2016 calves will not be held up by this requirement.

Pasture Management with the AGA Registry System Spring weather brings a busy season for most producers, but keeping track of pasture management doesn’t have to add anything to your workload. By Kari White THE AMERICAN GELBVIEH Registry System contains a few great tools to help busy producers keep track of activities like moving pastures, synchronization, palpation, and even vaccination. To manage your pastures, start by logging in to your member page on the registry system. On the Work Menu to the left of the screen, select “Pasture Groups” under “Herd Mgmt”. You will arrive at this screen:
click “Move” in the “For selected animals” box. Also in that box, notice you can record several things on animals in your pasture
groups. Any information you record in the breeding, weaning, yearling, or ultrasound tabs will also record that information in other parts of the registry that contains that same information, such as the “Breeding” tab under “Herd Mgmt”.
A few quick tips: • Don’t forget, in order to get an HP, PG30, and $Cow number a female must have a yearling weight observation. The first step is to create a new pasture group. Start by entering the date you moved the cows under “Enter the date cows were worked/moved”. Then, create the pastures you need by putting the identifier information in the Premise, Pasture, and Description boxes.
Next, simply select the animals you want to move into that pasture by clicking the box next to that animal. When you’ve selected all the animals you want in that pasture, 14 | MAY 2015
• Pick a date to start your pasture management, and only record data from that date forward. If you would like to input breeding information from past years, send that information in a spreadsheet to kario@gelbvieh.org and we will input that information for you. • If you are missing animals on your pasture groups screen, make sure they show up on your “Herd” tab. If the animal is also missing from that screen, call the office to make sure that animal is on your inventory. • Identifiers can also be applied to your animals to create groups for custom reports. To learn more about this process, see the “Using Identifiers” written guide under “Registry Service Tutorials” on www. gelbvieh.org. FFF

The Second Half of the Battle: Getting Cows Bred Although calving season management is the primary concern for most spring-calving herds, and rightfully so, that is only half the battle. By Warren Rusche, SDSU Extension Cow/Calf Field Specialist THE COWS STILL need to get re-bred (and early) if the
ranch is going to be a sustainable business long-term. Nutrition after calving plays a major role in affecting the success or failure of that process. To maintain a 365-day calving interval then rebreeding has to occur within 82 days after calving. A cow needs to recover from calving and start cycling again during that time period while at the same time providing enough milk for her growing calf. All of those demands impose a significantly higher nutrient requirement on cows after calving.
Biological Priorities A major obstacle to insure that she will re-breed early is the cow’s biological priority for nutrients. The first priority for any animal is to meet their maintenance needs first. The next priority in the case of 2-and 3-year old cows would be their requirements for growth. Providing milk for her calf is the third priority, and finally, if her nutrient intake is high enough she will increase body reserves, resume cycling, and re-breed. All four priorities need to be satisfied or there will be no calf to sell next year. Depending on her potential for milk production, a cow could require as much as 40 to 50% more energy and protein compared to the two months ahead of calving. Her needs for nutrients such as Vitamin A, calcium and phosphorus are much greater as well. Either better quality forage, additional supplementation, or a combination of the two would be needed to meet those needs. A big part of the reason why the standard recommendation has been to have cows in a body condition score of a 5 is that it is very difficult to add condition to cows after calving. Supplying more nutrients will increase milk production up to her maximum genetic potential before she adds body condition. It is important to recognize that in many herds the genetic potential for milk production
16 | MAY 2015
is much higher now due to selection pressure for more milk; the cost of that increased production is higher nutritional requirements.
Cost-Effective Nutrition So how do ranchers meet the needs of cows in the most cost-effective manner? The answer depends somewhat on when calving season begins. If the start of calving season is timed so that peak grass production coincides with when cows are in early lactation, then forage resources might very well be sufficient to meet her needs without relying on a great deal of harvested feedstuffs. Feed cost savings is one of the greatest advantages for adjusting the start of calving to match grass production in a given environment. If a ranch’s system involves calving earlier in the year, then the nutritional plan needs to take into account the cow’s higher requirements during early lactation. Ideally the feedstuffs have been tested so that the highest quality forages are saved for after calving and then the proper supplements provided if needed. Some possible early lactation diets are shown in Table 1. Keep in mind that nutrient composition of feedstuffs can vary tremendously. Producers need to have their own feeds tested and those values used in formulating diets for the most accurate results.

Scholarship Opportunities through the American Gelbvieh Foundation
Every year during the American Gelbvieh Junior Association (AGJA) Junior Classic, the American Gelbvieh Foundation awards up to $5,000 in scholarships to deserving junior members. Scholarship applications are due June 1.
for leading the charge to bring Gelbvieh to the United States. Hall is also a member of the Hall of Fame.
THERE ARE THREE core principles of the American Gelbvieh Foundation: education, research, and scholarship. Probably the most visible of these principles is scholarship. The scholarships are spotlighted during the AGJA Junior Classic, which is the annual junior national Gelbvieh and Balancer® show held during the summer.
Bob Rea, Sr., established a memorial scholarship after he judged scholarship applications during a Junior Classic event. Moved by the talent and promise of such deserving applicants, Bob returned home to create the scholarship and annually commits to his goal of helping a worthy AGJA member.
During the 2015 AGJA Heart of it All Classic, junior members have the opportunity to compete for up to $5,000 in scholarship money awarded through seven scholarships. Those scholarships included:
This year, the Zillinger family established the Mary Zillinger Cates Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship will honor Mary’s dedication to education and the animal agriculture industry.
$1,000 Earl Buss Memorial Scholarship $1,000 Leness Hall Memorial Scholarship $500 Rea Memorial Scholarship $500 Mary Zillinger Cates Memorial Scholarship $750 AGJA Scholarships (up to two scholarships awarded) $500 AGJA Scholarship Applicants must be an active member of the AGJA. Applicants must be at least a graduating high school senior as of January 1 of the current year up through college age students that can be 21 years of age on January 1 of the current year. Scholarship money must be used to attend a two- or four-year college or university. Scholarship applications can be downloaded from the Barnyard Classic webpage, on the AGJA Events page under the Juniors tab at Gelbvieh.org. Two of the memorial scholarships are in honor of the AGA’s founding fathers, Earl Buss and Leness Hall. Earl Buss was an original signor of the AGA’s Articles of Incorporation, served as AGA president, and was instrumental in purchasing the current AGA building. As well, Buss is a member of the AGA Hall of Fame. Leness Hall was the director of international marketing with Carnation Genetics and is responsible 20 | MAY 2015
Many parents and students know that any scholarship opportunity goes a long way towards reaching academic goals. Previous scholarship recipients have gone on to be influential, not only within the Gelbvieh breed, but within the beef industry. Growing scholarship opportunities are made possible through the growth of the American Gelbvieh Foundation. Contributions to the scholarship program can be made by making a taxfree donation to the American Gelbvieh Foundation and designating it for scholarship use. Contact the American Gelbvieh Association for more information on how you can support youth scholarships through the American Gelbvieh Foundation. FFF

A Grazing Plan for the Future Cowherd Expanding the nation’s beef cowherd is on the minds of many in the beef industry. By Rebecca Mettler FROM AN INDIVIDUAL producer level, some may be thinking about how to expand their herd while using their current resources. Often it takes a multifaceted approach to reallocate and better utilize the resources with a focus on beef cow production. Ted McCollum III, Ph.D., extension beef cattle specialist with Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service in Amarillo, Texas believes that producers must first evaluate their objectives for rebuilding and expansion. “How big do I want to go? How big are my cows going to be and what am I going to allocate inside that production system,” McCollum said. Another consideration includes determining what resources are available including land resources, knowledge and expertise resources, labor and financial resources. McCollum believes that most any ranch has room for improvement for better utilization.

“If we go inside our ranch and other operations we might find some room that we can spend a little bit of time and money to enhance the utilization of what we already have,” McCollum said. Better distributing cattle across acreage leads to better utilization of forage. Topographical impediments such as gullies, draws and ridges keep cattle from moving to harder to graze locations. These grazing deficiencies can be remedied by changing the season of use or utilizing supplemental feeding to draw cattle to underused locations. Increasing water distribution can also be effective in increasing pasture utilization. As McCollum advises producers on ways to rebuild he suggests they develop a stock flow plan. “It looks the same as doing a cash flow plan but instead of looking at expenditures and revenue on a monthly basis we are going to look at forage demand and forage production on a monthly basis across the year and see how it flows,” McCollum said. “Then we look at forage production chart later on and see how those two match up.” The stock flow plan and forage production charts help identify gaps in forage production as well as excess forage production during a specific time of the year. This model can also determine where forages can be stockpiled to spread use over time and during what times the producer needs to grow or find additional forage. Opportunities exist to make improvements by enhancing the production of existing forages. “Enhancing production of existing forages increase stability of two things,” McCollum said. “The stability of our plant communities. Healthy and vigorous stands are less susceptible to climate variations. It also increases the stability of our core livestock herd. For most of us it’s probably going to be cows. Lets protect that core investment if we can.” If possible, McCollum recommends producers develop a variety of perennial grasses for gaps in forage production. Annual forage varieties can also provide extra tonnage but are not as dependable. “Don’t heavily depend on annuals for your cowherd. You need perennial forages in place,” McCollum warns. McCollum points out that each improvement can lead to rebuilding or expanding a cowherd without adding one acre. Becoming a more efficient manager of the land and having the ability to realize the future potential of the land are key aspects in creating an operation ready to take on an expansion of the beef cowherd. Warmer Temperatures Mean Increased Water Needs for Cattle As summer approaches and high mid-day temperatures become the norm, cattle producers should give extra attention to making sure their herds have plenty of water to deal with extreme heat for the next several months. By Ryan McGeeney University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service “WATER IS PROBABLY the most overlooked feature on a livestock farm,” said Dirk Philipp, assistant professor-forages for the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture. “Clean, abundant drinking water is important for optimal animal importance.”
Philipp said that that access to drinking water typically increases the amount of dry matter, such as hay and other forage, that cattle ingest, which in turn helps regulate body temperature. Insufficient water intake in cattle can result in decreased rates of rumination and respiration and increased concentrations of urea and potassium in blood serum. Severe shortages over extended periods of time will result in animal losses, Philipp said, with the chance of survival under temperatures greater than 100 degrees Fahrenheit limited to three or four days. The water needs of individual animals depend on several factors, including outdoor temperature, the age of the animal and the moisture content of the animal’s forage diet. Philipp recommended producers make sure their cattle get approximately one gallon of water per pound of dry matter consumed. While a typical beef cow needs 20-30 gallons of water per day, lactating beef cows need 25-35 gallons; lactating dairy cows need

30-40 gallons of water each day. Weaned calves need about 10-15 gallons of water each day.

A higher pace of production can place additional demands for water consumption on cattle than the animals would typically need for daily “body maintenance,” Philipp said. Additionally, calves need proportionally more water than mature cows, Philipp said, because water needs are actually linked more to body surface area than to body weight. “Mature animals have about 10 times more water reserves for metabolic functions than calves,” he said. “Therefore, young animals are much more sensitive to water-related stress and distress, such as diarrhea.” Philipp said that the best approach to making water readily available to herds is to set up dedicated, waterline-fed access points. Examples include freezeproof watering stations, tire tanks that can be connected to ponds and stock tanks that are filled periodically with fresh water or hooked up to a water line. Dedicated pond and stream access points are better than nothing, Philipp said, although bacteria, pathogens and parasites are often abundant in those situations, due to the high contamination potential from cattle feces. JUNIOR VOICE
Are You Ready For The 2015 Show Season? gelbvieh.org. This will help immensely! And don’t forget to read the rules of each contest. This will help you understand what you can and cannot do when participating in the actual contest. Also, if you have any questions regarding an event just ask a junior board member, we would love to help you out!
The 2015 show season is right around the corner! This means it’s time to start preparing cattle and your brain for upcoming contests at regionals and American Gelbvieh Junior Association (AGJA) Heart of it All Classic! By Kelsey Sheeley For those youngsters just starting out, have an older junior help you and teach you the ropes. Proper grooming techniques associated with washing, blowing and clipping should be implemented. For those juniors who are a bit older, this is the time to show off your skills! You may have been prepping since the end of the 2014 Classic for this year’s events! This may also be the time to start making your checklist. Have I: • Packed the show box • Gathered all the feed/hay • Fully clipped out the cattle • Packed the trailer • Received health papers • Packed all my clothing (Including my blue polo!) Once you have your list started, start thinking about what contests you are going to participate in at regionals and nationals and any other shows! Use the Gelbvieh contest resources provided under the Juniors tab on
Lastly, remember to just have FUN! Get to know the participants from other states. Sometimes we can get caught up in the madness and forget why we are showing and participating in the contests in the first place. Sadly, this is my last year to be eligible to show as a junior. It has been such an honor and privilege to serve on the AGJA Board, and I encourage all members who are of age to run for a position on the junior board! Attending different conferences with the board introduces you to other breed board members thus leading the way to new friends and memories for a lifetime! I am looking forward to seeing the rest of my “Gelbvieh Family” at the regional and national shows! We all may have our competitive sides, but it’s the love of the game (or show in this case) and the qualities of our breed that got us here in the beginning! FFF

SALES Schroeder Ranch 17th Annual Balancer® Bull Sale April 6, 2015 Mitchell, South Dakota Auctioneer: Tracy Harl Sale Manager: Mettler Sale Management Reported by: Jerry Mettler Sale Averages 46 Balancer® Bulls..................................................... $5,011 33 Black Balancer Bulls........................................... $4,989 13 Red Balancer Bulls.............................................. $5,065 AN OVERCAST DRIZZLY day brought nothing but smiles
to the faces of the crowd that gathered at the Schroeder Ranch 17th Annual Bull Sale. Any type of moisture in this area is being received with welcome enthusiasm. This enthusiasm carried over into the bidding attitude as the bulls sold into six states under the pledge that Schroeder Ranch is “Your Source for Common Sense Balanced Beef.”
Leading off the sale at $12,000 was the Lot 36 SGRI B806 Brule Balancer bull. A 2/16/14 homozygous black, homozygous polled herd sire prospect that simply ‘covered all the bases’ from balanced numbers to exceptional performance and data. Sired by LT In Reach 9024 and out of a SAV 8180 Traveler 004 sired dam, Lot 36 found a new home at Wohl Farms, John Wohl, Baldwin, North Dakota. Certainly this young sire will be heard from in the future as Wohl Farms is rapidly securing a reputation in the Upper Plains states as a go to source for quality breeding stock. The second high seller, Lot 40 at $8,000, was sired by a proven Balancer patriarch, VRT Lazy TV Beethoven K278. SGRI B817 Custer, 2/26/14, was out of an LT In Reach 9024 heifer and this great one had an ADJ YW of 1526 pounds and his ADG on a 146 day test was an amazing 4.68 pounds per day and he sported a 15.37 sq in REA! Erik Roth, Parkston, South Dakota was the winning bidder. Next high selling bull went to a long time supporter of the Schroeder Ranch program and a distinguished purebred producer in their own right–Volek Gelbvieh, Highmore, South Dakota. They chose Lot 4, SGRI B809
