volution: the dictionary has numerous definitions pertaining to this word. No, I’m not going to be giving a science lesson here, but it does have a significant meaning as it pertains to Gelbvieh and the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA). The primary definition means, “a process of change in a certain direction.”
and had numerous conversations about the cattle business. It was during one of those conversations when I asked him why he chose Gelbvieh. Before Nelson Gelbvieh Ranch was started and Leness became the manager, he held the title of breed procurement for Carnation Genetics. Carnation, through its research to find other breeds, had decided to send Leness to Europe, specifically to locate a breed called Simmental. While he was traveling across Europe, he noticed a dark yellow set of cows that really impressed him. Not knowing for sure what they were, his guide and he pulled into the small farm and asked the owner what he called those cows in his paddock. The farmer told Leness that they were Gelbvieh. This sparked his interest and more research was done, and as we know, they
Let’s for a moment look back in time as it relates to the evolution of the cowherd we now have here in the United States. First, we had the Texas uch like the early ranchers, some Longhorns. These cattle were responsible thought there were better livestock for the development of the first cattle breeds out there to produce faster growing, ranches and the first markets. Now as time went by, some well-known ranchers heavier muscled feeder cattle and at the of that time period had the inspiration same time improve the milking ability of the to improve the quality of the Longhorns. cowherd—enter the Continental breeds. Sure, it’s easy to identify the Herefords, became the dominant breeds of the early livestock Charolais, and black baldies but after that, it becomes industry, and today, fall into the second definition of an educated guess. range strategic plan, I feel it’s important that we further recognize superior females. Not only the cows that qualify for Dams of Merit and Dams of Distinction but also highlight the cows that have a significant impact on the genetic base of this breed, much like we do with the most heavily-used sires. As time has evolved, the tracking of maternal genetics has become more relevant, not only to Gelbvieh and Balancer breeders but also to commercial producers who want to develop a more efficient cowherd. I started this article talking about evolution, and I may have wandered some, but the Gelbvieh cow we know today is not the same as the original. The process of evolution takes place over time and because these changes occur in small increments they can go unnoticed. For that reason, it’s important for the AGA to continue to monitor the effects of genetics and environment and at the same time, implement new research, keep abreast of industry demands, adapt to changing technologies and develop new programs to advance our place in the industry.
I would encourage every member to attend the AGA Annual Meeting in Lincoln. This meeting allows for the input of the membership with their participation in the committee meetings. Here is where the initial draft of the next long-range strategic plan will be presented by topic in each committee meeting. So rather than having to grasp the whole plan, individual aspects can be discussed and focused on, thus eliminating the chance to get sidetracked. We have talked about evolution as it pertains to the Gelbvieh cow, so too does evolution relate to the AGA. Like the early ranchers, who envisioned a better type of cattle, we as members of this association must also have a vision for our future. The need to evolve is paramount to the future of the AGA. I’ll again state the second definition of evolution with a little twist, a process of continuous change from a lower, simpler, or worse state to a higher, more complex, or better state of GROWTH. D

GW cowherd efficiency
A Call to Action: Make the Cows of Tomorrow Lower Maintenance By Rebecca Mettler
I
t’s an obvious conclusion that increases in cowherd efficiency on an operation would result in increased profit if all other profit factors stayed constant. However, the task of determining and monitoring the influencers of cowherd efficiency from a maintenance energy requirement standpoint is a topic of widely untapped potential. It’s generally known that an estimated 60 to 75 percent of the total energy expenditures for beef production are related to maintenance, according to Mark Enns, Ph.D., associate professor of livestock breeding and genetics at Colorado State University. “If we have the ability to improve our feed consumption in the cowherd associated with maintenance of the animal, we would likely improve the profitability of beef production,” Enns said. But, due to the hard-to-measure nature of the maintenance requirement trait, individual animal records are hard to gather on a large-scale basis. “We are going to have to measure traits that are easier to measure and are related to that (trait), rather than direct measurements of maintenance requirements,” Enns said. When the researchers and geneticists start to think about traits that producers can apply selection pressure to, there needs to be genetic variability in the traits to select for an improvement to take place. The traits related to maintenance energy requirements are primarily mature cow weight, height and body condition score, which also happen to be relatively easy traits to record at the seedstock level, according to Enns’ 2016 Beef Improvement Federation proceedings document. Fundamentally, mature weight, body condition score, and the different stages of milk production all factor into the maintenance energy requirements of a
10 | NOVEMBER 2016
cow. One missing data point within the trio does not tell the entire story. “We know that when cows are lactating, the heavier milking cows require more feed to maintain body condition scores. But, studies have also found that heavier milking cows, even if they aren’t lactating, require more to maintain their body condition score.” Not only is body condition score an important factor in determining the maintenance level of a cow, but it is also what most of the industry uses to represent fertility and the probability of breeding. Most of the maternal indexes that are available today in the industry are starting to connect the cost requirements of larger females, which Enns finds promising. Unfortunately, those are related to a correlated response in places where mature weights and body condition scores aren’t available. Instead, yearling weight and weaning weight measurements are used in their place, which leaves room for future improvement, provided the data is collected. “What I encourage you to do later is measure more of your cows’ size and that has to be associated with body condition score,” Enns said. Enns believes that the industry is lacking in data reporting. How does that affect the ability for both seedstock and commercial cow-calf producers to select lower maintenance animals? Step back and think about the bulls that the industry calls “spread bulls”—the bulls that sire low birth weight, heavy weaning and yearling weight progeny. Enns said that the ability to identify the outliers would have been severely compromised if a large number of birth, weaning, and yearling weights had not been recorded. “We’ve been able to produce spread bulls with a genetic relationship of .55; look at the relationship between mature weight and yearling weight, it’s even stronger. What that says is that it’s going to be even harder to find outliers that allow us to get rapid early growth to get those carcass weights and then shut off mature size and moderate maintenance requirements.” The push for more data collection needs to happen sooner rather than later. As Enns quoted from a colleague, the breeding decisions for the 2017 calf crop, concerning heifer calves, will influence the cowherd well past 2030. The decisions made today
GW will provide long-lasting impacts. And while genomic testing is one technology that will be looked upon for future input for estimating maintenance requirements, it doesn’t mean cattle producers should stop collecting phenotypical data. Data is required to help the industry establish the genetic tests for maintenance energy requirements to have the opportunity to reduce the cost associated with those requirements. “We need the data to help us establish those genetic tests, also from the selection standpoint to help us select those animals which are outliers, the animals that have good growth but low maintenance requirements.” The bottom line for seedstock producers: collect more data because the beef industry is at a point in time where improvements can be made on cow maintenance energy and cow maintenance requirements. It’s only a matter of having the data to work with to make the advancements for the betterment of the seedstock herds and cow-calf operations around the country.
The American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) is currently collecting data to gather more information about cowherd efficiency. AGA members can enter the data on dams at calf weaning without having to go to any extra effort or other screens to input data in the AGA Online Registry Service. The association also serves the commercial cattle producer’s data needs with Smart Select Service, Genetic Tools for Ranchers. Commercial producers can use Smart Select Service to record individual data on their cowherd and improve herd efficiency. Be sure to check back within the next couple of months to read a second article related to cow maintenance energy requirements. The upcoming article will dive into more specific details regarding the AGA’s current cow efficiency efforts and future goals as a part of the multi-breed international cattle evaluation. D

M
icah Wells is the sales director of beef genomics for GeneSeek, a Neogen company. GeneSeek provides value-added services to leading agricultural genetics providers, large national cattle associations, companion animal breed registries and university researchers through their state-of-the-art genetics laboratories and comprehensive bioinformatics to interpret genetic test results, according to the company website. They are considered a world leading commercial agricultural laboratory.
What role does DNA testing play in the beef industry? We provide DNA testing services to both seedstock and commercial producers. DNA testing helps to provide producers with more information so that they can make better decisions about what animals they are keeping and it helps producers to then know how to best market the animals they are going to cull. Every year we have learned more and more since the first genotyping of beef cattle. We are still early in the development stages of how DNA is used and what we know. Like any other technology, improvements and advancements will be made over time.
Does GeneSeek perform DNA testing for any other species other than beef cattle? Geneseek originally got its start with beef cattle but since then it has expanded to doing DNA testing on poultry, swine, and even plants. Roughly 2 million samples per year go through our lab in Lincoln, Nebraska.
What is an advantage of DNA testing? Overall, people are realizing the advantage of trimming down genetic intervals through genomic testing. Quicker advancements can be made through using the information DNA testing can give. Being able to match a proven quality heifer with a proven quality bull allows advancements to be made fairly quickly. Genomic-Enhanced EPDs (GE-EPDs) are not only looking at that particular animal but at that animal’s progeny.
Is there a need for DNA testing in a softer cattle market? Someone made the comment the other day that
14 | NOVEMBER 2016
since prices are really soft we must be hurting. But it is the exact opposite. Every decision you make is even more important, so the more information you have on that heifer or that bull, the better off you are going to be. We have actually seen an increase in testing when prices in the market are down because all of that information is much more valuable now. If you are going to buy 100 heifers, you want to get the best 100 heifers that you can, so paying a little more up front [with genomic testing] is going to pay off in the long run.
What does GGP mean? GGP stands for GeneSeek Genomic Profiler. We have a GGP-HD or the GGP-HD 150K, as we like to call it. This is a high density panel with 150,000 SNPs on one chip. This panel is also known in the scientific community as ultra-high density panel. We also have the GGP-LD or low density panel which has over 40,000 SNPs on a chip.
What sample types are accepted? Blood, hair (these take longer to run through testing, but are still a great source of DNA), our newest and I think, our preferred method over all would be the tissue sampling unit (TSU). TSU is a small vial that takes a punch of the ear tissue and stores it in solution. We have developed a way that we can retest a tissue sample multiple times and it can be stored for a long period of time. We have also been able to automate the processing of these TSU samples.
Finally, why DNA test? When prices are high, decisions are important and when prices are low, decisions are even more important. DNA testing is the next level of information that is available and it is important to take advantage of those tools that are there. So every decision you make needs to be the best one possible and we think we help take that to the next level. It is also very easy to do. Don’t be intimidated by the fact that it’s DNA. Samples are easy to collect and the results are easy to understand. There are no excuses anymore for not taking advantage of this science because it is very well proven, it is affordable, and it’s growing everyday. To learn more about GeneSeek and the DNA testing process, join the American Gelbvieh Association as we take a tour of the GeneSeek laboratory in Lincoln, Nebraska, during the 46th Annual AGA National Convention. ith weaning season upon us and harvesters starting to roll down the road, producers are getting busy. With all the day-to-day tasks that need to get done, it is easy to stick to tradition and ignore the fact that what has always been done in the past, may not make “cents” this year. With today’s livestock and crop market prices, given the current economic situation it is time to sharpen the pencil to ensure profits are still there

at the end of the day. Producers often overlook replacement heifer development plans with the implementation of these plans happening soon after weaning. Producers that have not evaluated the cow costs or heifer development costs may not be using the best replacement method for their operation. Just because heifers have been kept in the past, it does not mean they need to be kept every year. Does it make financial sense this year? Do producers actually considered the TRUE cost of raising replacement heifers? Or can value be realized by selling feeder heifers and buying bred heifers later? What factors or opportunity costs need to be accounted for when making this decision? This article will look at the cost of production, with the buying vs. raising replacement heifer debate to follow soon in a future article.
Heifer Development Expenses Many heifer development expenses do not require producers to actually write a check, thus are often unaccounted for in the heifer development budget. These fixed expenses include costs that will occur regardless of the number of heifers kept for development (example: feeder wagon, tractor, pickup). Another common item missing in the budget is cow depreciation. Cow depreciation needs to be accounted for especially when purchase price, salvage value and years of service may differ from year to year. Depreciation also serves as an indicator when evaluating if replacement heifers are to be raised and developed or bought as bred heifers. Value can also be lost because of not taking into consideration the opportunity cost of production. The heifer calf has a market value at weaning. The bred heifer enterprise should “purchase” the heifer calf at either the market price (sale barn price per pound) or the cow costs incurred to grow the calf from breeding to weaning.
Direct & Fixed Expenses Start by assigning values to records in a budget to determine the cost of production, distinguishing direct from fixed expenses (Table 1).

Overhead/Fixed Expenses
Power & utilities. Owner/hired labor salary & benefits. Interest, insurance, taxes. Depreciation. Machinery, equipment, buildings, fences, and pens maintenance. Bull ownership.
Other Expenses Other expenses/opportunity costs that might not fall into the above categories but may need a value assigned to them include: • Value of the heifer calf • Extra pen/pasture to manage heifers separately from mature cows • Extra Bulls – maintenance/feed costs and purchase of calving-ease heifer bulls • Pregnancy Rate: 5 – 10% of replacements will not breed and their expenses need to be accounted for (Replacement charge per cow) • Cull percentage & resale value of culls • Death losses

Sample Budget Using a budget will help the total costs of raising replacement heifers. Table 2 gives an example of the cost of production of raising a replacement heifer from 2015 weaning, to fall 2016 pregnancy check. To determine cost of production unique to an operation, download the 2016 Livestock Budgets projection calculator and input your own feed costs and values, which can be found on the following webpage: http://www.sdstate.edu/ economics/extension-and-outreach.
The Bottom Line These are just some of the things a producer needs to consider when creating a replacement heifer development plan. Having a heifer development plan can help producers determine the best use of their resources. This is especially true when there are expectations of lower profit margins as a result of depressed market prices. D

You Can’t Have a Great Cowherd Without Great Cows! By William McIntosh
B
ehind every great herd sire there is a great cow —behind every successful ranch is a great set of cows. Such simple and honest statements yet they have many moving parts in order to become truthful; a lot of factors go into making a great cow. Yeah, I know bulls get most of the attention, and rightfully so. A good bull can make a quick impact on a calf crop or two, but a great bull will not only add performance and carcass traits, but will also leave daughters in the cowherd that will be profitable for many, many years. What makes a great cow? A great cow is fertile, she calves unassisted, she milks, she maintains her body condition, she weans a big calf, she breeds back, and she does all of this for years and years. Great cows are fertile. Fertility is a huge profit driver in any cow-calf operation. We all experience drought, floods, blizzards, extreme hot and cold weather. A cow should have the ability to rebreed every time no matter the circumstances. The Meat Animal Research Center in Clay Center, Nebraska rank Gelbvieh number one in terms of early puberty. Great cows calve unassisted. No one wants to, or has the time to pull calves. Not only is it time consuming, but also many studies have shown that cows that have difficulty calving are at higher risk for rebreeding difficulties. Great cows milk well. Milk is a tricky trait to select for when compared to other selection criteria. Added milk production usually equates into heavier calves weaned, but too much of a good thing can be bad. A cow can milk too much in many environments. If a cow out-milks her environment she will give everything she has to her calf and will not maintain her body condition and more than likely, won’t breed back. When selecting for milk it’s important to know how much is too much for your environment and management system.
18 | NOVEMBER 2016
Great cows maintain their body condition. Body condition is a good indicator of several things. First is structural soundness. If a cow can’t travel because she is structurally unsound, she won’t be able to consume enough forage to maintain her weight. Secondly, fleshing ability can also indicate that a cow milks too heavily for the environment. And lastly, if a cow is too big for her environment she will oftentimes stay thinner than desired. A cow that can maintain her body condition year in and year out is doing a lot of things right. Great cows wean heavy calves. The early puberty Gelbvieh offers is not only an advantage for fertility but also early growth. We still sell feeder calves by the pound. So, at the end of the day, added weaning weight equates to more dollars in your pocket. Combine those heavy weaning weights with a moderate sized cow that requires fewer inputs, and you’ve got the ticket to a profitable operation. Great cows produce and perform all year, year after year. Longevity is another huge profit driver for cow-calf producers. It has been said that replacement cost is the highest cost in a cowherd. Whether you develop your own replacement heifers or buy them, it is a considerable expense. The more years a cow’s depreciation can be spread over, the more profitable she is. A great cowherd doesn’t just happen, it takes years of hard work to identify the superior cows within the herd. The American Gelbvieh Association understands the importance of maternal efficiency and has developed several tools to help in making selection decisions. Heifer pregnancy, Preg 30, stayability, and $Cow are all tools to help measure maternal efficiency and help producers make wellinformed decisions. Cows that produce more, consume less, and stay in the herd longer are the ones that will keep you in business. D

Utilizing the Embryo Inventory Tool By Kim Rounds
I
f you have recently encountered frustration while attempting to register embryo transfer (ET) calves, you have come to the right article. In this issue, we are heavily discussing the Gelbvieh cow and donor dams, so there’s no better time to point out the incredibly useful Embryo Inventory tool on the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) Online Registry Service. Below, I will walk you through how to utilize this easy-to-use tool, and help answer some more frequently asked questions.
Accessing the Embryo Inventory In the left hand column of your AGA Online Registry Service account, under the “Herd Management” tab is
the “Breeding” tab. In here you will find listed “Bull Agreements”, “Semen Inventory”, “Embryo Inventory”, and other subjects, all related to the reproductive stage and status of your herd. We will start with the “Embryo Inventory” and how to use that to your advantage when registering ET calves and managing the reproductive status of your herd.
Recording Embryos in the Inventory In the Embryo Inventory, you can keep track of all embryo flushes from your own herd, embryo purchases, and sales. To create a new embryo record, click “Add New Embryo” at the top of the screen, in the center. In the window that pops up, fill in the sire’s registration number, the dam’s registration number and the flush date; finish by clicking “Find These”. On the next screen, you can fill in as much of the information as you would like to record, such as “Cane Code”, “Tank”, or “Canister”. However, the only required information is the quantity of embryos that resulted from that particular flush. As long as the dam is

registry tips ‘n tricks GW qualified to be a donor and the sire is qualified as an AI sire, you can record embryos in just a few simple steps.
Buying and Selling Embryos Once you have an embryo, or group of embryos, recorded in the Inventory, you have the option to “Edit/Adjust”, “Record Use”, and “Record Sales”. If you purchased an embryo, much like transferring cattle in our system, the sale must be recorded from the original owner’s account. This is vital for making birth recordings easy and painless when using an embryo that you purchased. To transfer an embryo you sold, click “Record Sale” and fill in the number of embryos sold out of that flush, the buyer’s ID, and the date it was sold. To complete the transfer, click “Transfer Embryos to Buyer”.
Recording Use of Embryos If the embryos are in your inventory, recording their use can be recorded in two phases: one, after the embryo is transferred to the recipient cow and two, in a Birth Recording Work Queue after the calf is born. By recording the use of the embryo within the Embryo
Inventory, you are transferring it into a cow in your herd. This will update the breeding status of that cow to reflect that she is carrying an embryo calf, and this information will translate into the Birth Recording Work Queue when you go to record that calf. If you choose to only record the use of the embryo after the calf has been born, you will enter the information of the flush date and recipient dam manually on the far right hand side of a new Birth Recording Work Queue. Remember that you are not required to record a recipient dam if she is a commercial cow. In this case, the donor cow will be charged an additional $25 to record a calf after she has used her assessment for that year. If you choose to use a registered cow in your herd as the recipient dam, it will use that cow’s assessment for the year to record the calf. The Embryo Inventory is a very user-friendly tool that can save time and frustration when recording embryo calves. You can keep track of flushes out of your herd, embryo sales and purchases, and transfers to recipient cows. As always, if you have any questions on this subject please feel free to contact the office (303) 465-2333, or email myself directly at kim@gelbvieh.org. D

Tallying Up the Year’s Superior Gelbvieh and Balancer® Cows The Annual Dam of Merit and Dam of Distinction Honor Role Released
O
nce a year, the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) honors females in the AGA Online Registry Service that display maternal dominance with the Dam of Distinction and Dam of Merit program. The association has been ranking outstanding females within the Gelbvieh and Balancer® breed since the program’s first year in 1991. The program’s purpose is to recognize members who make it a point to place emphasis on the all-important maternal traits that Gelbvieh cattle are known for throughout the country. The Dam of Merit honor recognizes cows that meet strict selection criteria including early puberty and conception, regular calving intervals and above-average weaning weights on at least three calves. Through data submitted to the AGA office and of the 39,730 cows assessed in 2016, only 5.5 percent qualify for Dam of Merit.
Top 20 Owners Name
The Dam of Distinction award recognizes cows that meet the same high standards, in addition to exhibiting superior, long-term productivity with at least eight calves. Only 1.3 percent of all active Gelbvieh and Balancer cows qualify for this elite group. Flip through the “honor role” pages to see the top 10 states ranked by the combined total of Dams of Merit and Dams of Distinction as well as the top 20 owners, top 20 breeders, and a list of membership ranking by state for both the Dam of Merit and Dam of Distinction awards. Congratulations to those members listed for this prestigious accomplishment and for their commitment to producing superior maternally-focused females!

GW data bulletin appear greater. In reality, the relative performance of those animals is biased upward because of being compared to the rest of the herd that received no special treatment.
Guide to Contemporary Grouping By Kari White
T
he American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) Online Registry Service makes herd data and Expected Progeny Differences (EPD) values more available than ever to help producers make sound genetic improvement choices for their herds. With all this information so easy to view, the AGA office often gets questions about the specifics of concepts like contemporary grouping, which producers can now view in detail for each animal, or by groups of animals.
What factors go into a contemporary group used for genetic evaluation at the AGA? Grouping begins at birth and is done by herd. Calves are separated by a 90-day window for birth date, sex, service type, birth type, and management code. Service type means AI or natural service calves vs. ET calves. Birth type means twins vs. single births. Management code is set by the producer to denote groups of animals that are managed differently. If the producer doesn’t set a management code, all calves would have a management code of 1. If a producer wants to group calves differently, they can separate calves by management codes of 1, 2, 3, and so on. Contemporary groups (CG) are additive, which means they build on each other as time goes on. A weaning contemporary group, for example, is formed by birth CG, weaning weight date, sex, and management code. Yearling contemporary group is formed by weaning CG, yearling weight date, sex, and management code. As you can see,
A contemporary group is a group of animals that have experienced a similar environment with respect to the expression of a trait, such as birth weight. Contemporaries typically are from the same location, are of the same sex, are of similar age, and have been managed alike (Bourdon, 2000). Why is it important to group animals for genetic evaluation? We know that heritability of traits can be increased by adjusting for known environmental effects, and orrect contemporary grouping is by managing animals to minimize differences in important, because incorrect performance caused by the environment. We also groups can distort genetic predictions for know it is not always possible for animals to be managed the same, particularly if you are trying individual animals. to compare animals from different herds or even different areas of the country. Contemporary grouping makes it possible to impartially compare animals from different herds when each group (aside from birth) is based on a previous management types and physical environment are different. group. If you have many groups at birth, you will have Correct contemporary grouping is important, because many subsequent contemporary groups as well. incorrect groups can distort genetic predictions for To view contemporary groups in your herd, log in to individual animals. This generally occurs when some your home page on the AGA Registry. Contemporary animals receive preferential treatment in the herd, but are groups for each trait can be viewed under the “CG’s” contemporary grouped with animals that don’t receive tab. To view a specific group for a trait, click on the PDF special treatment. A good example of this situation would next to a contemporary group number. This will open be show animals that are given extra feed and care, apart a file that details the performance of each animal in from the herd. These animals may grow faster than the the contemporary group, along with adjusted weights, rest of the herd because of special management and feed, ratios, and ranks within the group. For more questions so they should be separated by the breeder into a separate on contemporary grouping, contact the AGA office at contemporary group. If all animals are grouped into 303-465-2333. Be Thankful! By Tiana Garcia
W
hen the weather starts to get colder and the leaves start to turn we know that fall has arrived. With the change of the seasons comes my favorite holiday: Thanksgiving. What a wonderful time to gather with the ones we love and celebrate all that we have been blessed with. When I count my blessings and look at the things in life that I am thankful for, one of those at the top of the list is the Gelbvieh cow. This might seem funny to some, but as members of the Gelbvieh family we can surely all relate.
How lucky are we to raise cattle that excel in performance in so many aspects of the beef industry? Gelbvieh females have some of the best maternal strengths out of any cattle breed including longevity. Our cattle are also known for their growth traits. More pounds weaned, superior carcass weights, feedlot merit and feed efficiency help Gelbvieh and Balancer®-influenced calves outshine other breeds in the feedlot. With all these incredible traits and many others that we all know about, Gelbvieh cattle work well for both the purebred seedstock producer and commercial cattlemen. If that’s not something to be thankful for I’m not sure what is. No one warned me that when I joined the AGJA I was becoming a member of not only a top-notch association, but also an incredible family. Over the

past 11 years as a junior member, I have never felt so at home with any organization or group of peers before. I have heard many of my fellow AGJA members talk about our “Gelbvieh family.” This past August, at the POWER Conference I had the chance to sit down with a small group of juniors and talk about

what we love about the AGJA and what we want to continue focusing on in the future. By the end of the discussion there was one thing that remained at the top of the list unanimously…our Gelbvieh family. Seeing just how important this is to the rest of our junior members was very humbling. If we didn’t have the Gelbvieh cow, we wouldn’t have an association made up of wonderful members continually trying to improve our breed. Throughout my years as a junior member it was a dream to be elected to the junior board. When I was elected to my first term I was ecstatic. Now as the new year quickly approaches so does my final year as a junior member. This past summer I had the opportunity to attend the summer AGA board meeting. Doing so gave me something new to be excited for. While I know the

junior connection GW last year of my time as a junior member is bittersweet, the next step in the Gelbvieh journey is exciting. As it has been said by many past AGJA board members and adult members, as our time as junior members comes to an end it’s not over, our roles simply change. Becoming a member of the AGA and being a member of such a great organization is something that we junior members should look forward to just as much as getting to wear a Seafoam green jacket. We are the future of an incredible breed. Getting the chance to be a part of the next generation of the American Gelbvieh Association is something in itself to be thankful for. As members of the AGJA, opportunity knocks on our door often. The opportunities we have because we are members of the AGJA are endless. Being an ambassador, attending junior nationals, serving on the junior board, attending POWER or YBIC, and promoting the Gelbvieh breed are just a few of the opportunities we have available to us. Continuing on into the AGA there are countless opportunities
to grow as cattle producers and leaders in the beef industry. In this fast changing world, it’s important to continue to grow as producers and keep up on industry trends and consumer demands and the AGA helps its members do that. As we all spend this season preparing for winter and the new year ahead, I hope you stop and take some extra time to think about all we have to be thankful for as Gelbvieh enthusiasts. We have many opportunities because of the association we are a part of. We are also all a part of this wonderful Gelbvieh family, but let’s not forget that we wouldn’t all come together as a family if it wasn’t for the one thing we all share a love of…the Gelbvieh cow. I hope that everyone has a wonderful holiday season with their family, friends and of course Gelbvieh cattle! D

Juniors Practice their Agvocating Skills with Writing Contest
T
his month we are featuring the last installment of the American Gelbvieh Junior Association (AGJA) creative writing contest results from the summer’s AGJA Dirt Road Classic. The junior
division was tasked with writing a letter to a friend who isn’t familiar with farm life. Lilly Weber from Lamar, Missouri was the first place contestant.
March 5, 2016 Dear Cora, Hi! How are you? I am fine. I am busy as ever on the farm. Spring is here and lots of things are happening. From the spring rain showers falling, to the flowers starting to bloom, there are changes taking place daily. As I look out the window of my house, I see new baby calves running in the pasture with their moms watching them closely. Our cattle are a breed called Gelbvieh. This breed is known for its meat and milking abilities. This means that the mothers provide a good source of milk to their calves to help them grow up to be healthy and strong. They are also a great source of meat with their muscling. With so many people in the world to feed, it is important to have meat for everyone. Many people think hunger is only a third world problem, but it is not. Many people can not eat a healthy meal in the United States. The farmers and ranchers work hard to raise food for everyone. I know that my cattle will feed many people including my family and me. Have you ever thought about where your food comes from before it gets to the grocery store? Our food starts in the pasture. It is important to have cattle and grassland for them to graze. Farmers and ranchers work hard to get the most from the land and take care of it. One way I help my family do this is control the weeds and set up fences in rotational grazing. This is a process where we divide the pasture into sections for grazing. I enjoy knowing that the work I am doing on the farm is helping to feed you and me. I look forward to your visit to my farm and the chance to show you all the little calves as they run, jump, and play in the pasture. Your Friend, Lilly
