Building Upon Our Strengths and Industry Acceptance By Scott Starr

T

he Gelbvieh and Balancer® breed is well known throughout the beef industry for their maternal strengths plus excellent growth. The cattle feeding industry has acknowledged the feeding strengths, consistency of kind, foot soundness, and overall quality the Gelbvieh and Balancer breed possesses. Next, we as members and an association need to promote the extreme advantages of Gelbvieh influence in commercial cowherds. Gelbvieh and Balancer females are the most logical fit into crossbreeding systems in many environments and should be an easy sell, as we can now show the fact that their steer mates are in demand in the feeding industry.

picture. You have heard me say before, “Fertility is the biggest economic factor to profitability to commercial cattle producers.” You must have a product to sell or there is no paycheck. Open cows equals no paycheck. There is extensive data documenting the Gelbvieh breed as the leader in sustainability of cowherds. (See Table 1) The Gelbvieh and Balancer breed has built the foundation. It is up to the commercial cow-calf producer to build the structure upon that foundation with their crossbreeding system. That will involve using all available tools and collecting data to improve their cowherd structure over time. We as breeders must ensure that the foundation is always sound and without cracks, flaws, or weak spots. We must continue to use genetics that have all the measurable tools possible: Dams of Merit, Dams of Distinction, genetic leaders lists, stayability, $COW. We own maternal and must keep this foundation all while making sure our cattle fit all other aspects of the beef industry, e.g., soundness, feeding, grading, environmental adaptability, and maintenance costs. This will help the commercial producer to build his structure bigger and better. So many crossbreeding systems are very functional but are limited by logistical constraints and large herd sizes to keep the desired cross. The Balancer program simplifies matings without limiting factors such as pasture size and separate herds, which makes it an simple fit for commercial producers of any size.

Table 1 To build a long-lasting structure you must first build a sound scientific foundation. With a much-improved stayability expected progeny difference (EPD) that defines productivity and consistency, we have a figure that we can count on to identify those reliable genetics that pay the bills every year. Secondly, we were one of the first associations to develop an index geared toward maternal traits: $COW. This brings into account many factors of the fertility

6 | NOVEMBER 2018

We are at the crossroads of acceptance and excellence. This is a new crossroads in the beef industry and very exciting for producers who already own Gelbvieh and Balancer genetics. Gelbvieh and Balancer cattle own maternal excellence in crossbreeding systems, now let’s get focused and sell the facts! We have the maternal foundation, moderate mature size (think lower maintenance costs), exceptional early growth, foot soundness, grading ability, docility and allimportant FERTILITY. “We create a standard for how we want to do things and everybody’s got to buy into that standard or you really can’t have any team chemistry. Mediocre people don’t like high-‐achievers and high-‐achievers don’t like mediocre people,” Nick Saban. Difficult roads lead to beautiful destinations and without vision we will perish. D

Raising the Bar By Megan Slater

W

hat is an association? According to MerriamWebster, an association is a noun defined as an organization of persons having a common interest. The American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) is just that and it can even be taken a step further to say the people of the AGA not only have a common interest but also a common purpose. Our organization and its membership has the purpose of raising Gelbvieh and Balancer® cattle, keeping them relevant in the beef industry, and continuing to create demand for those genetics. Being a part of an association means being a part of something bigger than yourself. Sure, there are benefits to you and your operation by being a member of the AGA. But the bigger picture is being a part of an entity that gives you the tools to better your cattle and operation to then be able to offer a more valuable product to your customer and even to the rest of the beef industry. The AGA strives to offer the best tools and services to members AND their commercial customer to help both segments meet modern industry demands and even to raise the bar on meeting those demands. We all want Gelbvieh and Balancer cattle to be at the forefront and the leader in the beef industry, but to make it happen, we must all work together, be present, and provide input when important decisions are made. The AGA National Convention is one of the best places for the association to work together and for members to be a part of the decision making process. The national convention is AGA’s biggest event of the year and is where we take time to reflect on the accomplishments of the past year, but more importantly to make decisions of where the AGA and the breed are headed in the future. One example of a history-making moment from convention took place at the 2017 AGA National

8 | NOVEMBER 2018

Convention in Wichita, Kansas, when the membership voted to release BOLT-powered expected progeny differences (EPDs) as soon as they were available. This was a big step for the membership and truly showed their desire to keep AGA relevant by adopting the latest and best technology available to describe Gelbvieh and Balancer cattle. This summer the AGA followed that direction from the membership and published BOLT-powered EPDs, which makes it possible for AGA to release new EPDs each week. Convention is a great place to get the most out of your AGA membership by exercising your right to choose the leaders of our organization and through the opportunity to voice your opinion regarding the association’s future direction. We are also humbly reminded that we are all part of something even bigger than the AGA, and that is the beef industry. The AGA is excited about this year’s industryleading speakers at the 4th Annual Cattlemen’s Profit Roundup who will be speaking about adding value to your cattle from conception to consumption. This symposium is focused on the commercial cattle industry but is certainly applicable to seedstock producers and all cattlemen alike. I encourage everyone to attend this event with both of these perspectives in mind: as a cattle producer looking to improve their operation and as someone who must meet the needs of their customers (seedstock to cow calf, or cow-calf to feedyard/packer). AGA has been known for being a progressive beef breed association and there are no plans of stopping that momentum, but it takes us all to get the job done! Join the AGA this month in Nashville, Tennessee, November 28-30 for the 48th Annual AGA National Convention to see what a year the AGA has had and gain insight into what’s in store for the future. GW over the fence

Over the Fence with SweetPro® Premium Feed Supplements By Rebecca Mettler

S

weetPro® Premium Feed Supplements started developing nutritional technology for livestock in 1991 when president and founder, Bob Thornberg, formulated a way to stabilize ethanol by-products by combining dried distiller grains with solubles (DDGS) and condensed distiller solubles (CDS) into a solid 250-pound lick block. DDGS and CDS have proven to be an excellent carrier for vitamins and minerals. SweetPro supplements also utilize a digestive aide ProBiotein®, which is a yeast culture fermented on wheat, oats, flax, and barley malt. ProBiotein is manufactured by SweetPro Feeds and goes into all products. Thornberg’s vision was to create a livestock feed supplement that would provide proper nutrients to animals in a form that works in step with an animal’s digestive system to enhance health, reproduction, and growth. “We are a nationwide manufacturer of livestock supplements focusing on products for beef cattle and horses,” said Troy Gavin, SweetPro director of sales and marketing.

What makes SweetPro products unique? SweetPro supplements contain no molasses but instead use CDS as the primary ingredient that holds the finished products together “CDS provides energy in the form of complex carbohydrates, not simple sugars,” said Ryan Edelman, SweetPro vice-president. “Condensed distillers solubles have similar binding and aroma benefits to molasses, but they are much higher in protein and fat than molasses.” SweetPro Feeds focuses on product consistency. “DDGS, CDS, and Corn Gluten Meal are the primary products we use. These items are clearly identified on our labels. Our competitors will list grain by-products or other collective term items on their labels. While their products will meet the guaranteed analysis, you will have no idea of what they put into their product.”

10 | NOVEMBER 2018

Why is good rumen health important? An animal with a healthy and efficient digestive system will utilize nutrients more efficiently which, in turn, will support better body condition, reproduction, and overall better herd health. “Since the distillers feed used in SweetPro supplements have already been fermented, the starches have been removed, and there’s no sugar content to negatively affect the rumen and drive down pH,” said Edelman. “The combination of protein, complex carbohydrates, and prebiotic fibers help keep the microbial populations in the rumen in optimum condition.” “Digestive improvement from our unique blend of yeast, enzymes, prebiotics, vitamins, and minerals helps to maintain animal health and reduce costs because the feed is digested more efficiently,” said Gavin. University trials demonstrated SweetPro improves feed efficiency by up to 25 percent, which means a producer needs 25 percent less feed for cattle, or they can stock up to 25 percent more animals on the same forage from what had previously been determined to be a lower stocking rate.

Why is the addition of prebiotics into feed supplements so important? Also, what’s the difference between prebiotics and probiotics? Many people are familiar with the term probiotics, as it has become a term commonly mentioned in conjunction with human health. Probiotics are the beneficial bacteria in the digestive tract. In cattle, probiotics break down forages by converting sugars and carbohydrates into beneficial byproducts that will be absorbed into the blood and delivered to cells as nutrients. Prebiotics are food for probiotics and help keep probiotics healthy. Prebiotics are not directly digested by the animal but rather by the probiotics. The four prebiotics used by SweetPro are fructo (FOS), mannan (MOS), xylo (XOS) and arabinoxylo (AXOS).

Do you have products for each beef industry sector? “Yes, our product line is designed for complete beef cow/calf and stocker programs,” said Gavin. “Our family of blocks is designed to fit the stage of growth of the animal. For example, we have blocks tailored to calves or stockers and blocks focused for first-calf heifers and cows. Our program is consumption based, meaning if consumption increases or decreases you move to the next hardest or

over the fence GW softest product in the line. Typical consumption ranges between .75 to 1.25 lbs/head/day. Most producers will only utilize two maybe three formulas at the most. As forage and production conditions change consumption changes in our products. A producer can utilize our product line to dial in consumption that meets the needs of the animal.”

What are some recent innovations and/or product releases within the feed supplement sector? In 2017, garlic was an added option to any of the blocks. “Garlic is an all-natural way to repel insects,” said Edelman. “With just one fly season tested we have heard a good response back from cattle producers. They are seeing a large reduction in flies on the back and especially the facial area. Many have also stated they have seen an effective reduction in tick presence on their cattle as well as horses.”

How does SweetPro fit into the producer’s management plan for enhancing herd health and nutrition? “SweetPro and our distributors focus on building a

relationship with our customers,” said Gavin. “We want to hear what is working for them, any changes or adaptations they believe we should consider in our products. The bottom line is SweetPro is like many cattle operations, we are a family owned business, and our success is dependent on the success of our customers. We want your cattle to be functional and healthy for your profitability, and we enjoy being a part in helping you reach your goals.”

What does the future hold for the SweetPro company? A third manufacturing plant, Arizona Grain Company, Casa Grande, Arizona, is coming on board in the fourth quarter of 2018. The Horton, Kansas plant manufactures SweetPro’s complete line of lick block products and the Walhalla, North Dakota plant specializes in manufacturing bagged products. “This will expand our product outreach and supply in the western third of the U.S. as well as open up markets in Mexico. Arizona Grain Company is the furthest south and western ethanol plant in the country and is strategically located in one of our expanding markets,” Edelman said. D

Todd Bickett, DVM, Georgia I am honored to be considered for my second tenure on the AGA Board of Directors. For those unfamiliar with me, my wife Alisa and I have operated as TJB Gelbvieh since 1991. I have repeated this story many times, but the best thing I ever received from this breed is my wife. Alisa and I met when I was purchasing my first Gelbvieh females from her cousin, Randy Daniel at Partisover Ranch. For that introduction, I will be forever grateful. I was raised on a dairy/beef cattle farm in central Kentucky, where I developed my passion for the industry. I attended the University of Kentucky for my undergraduate education and studied animal science. In 1986, I graduated from Auburn University School of Veterinary Medicine. Hailing from the Bluegrass, I made Georgia my home when I began mixed-practice veterinary medicine, a practice I co-owned for 15 years. My real love in the profession became bovine reproduction, so I left the clinic and began operations as Bickett Genetics, Inc. I have operated a full-service bovine embryo transfer service since that time. I was exposed to the Gelbvieh breed through a client in 1988, and like most, was impressed with the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center data and the docility and maternal strengths. That interest led me to Partisover Ranch, and the rest is history! I have been fortunate in my veterinary career and my cattle ventures to have encountered tremendous cattlemen to emulate. In the beginning I was not experienced in the purebred cattle

48th Annual AGA National Convention GW business, so I found the people I could believe in, took their advice, and followed their lead. I was enamored with my first tenure on the board. The term was amid a crucial time, during the transition to the Balancer® segment of our industry. It was at that time I learned the importance of representation from various aspects of the breed. Additionally, I learned that differing opinion is what makes an association thrive. Although we did not always agree, inside the boardroom we were responsible for setting our individual ideas aside and taking a unified position for the association. Today, I believe I can bring this same open-mindedness and a new, determined vision to the Board. While I truly love and admire agriculture, my wonderful family and God are my strong foundation. Alisa is forever full of energy and life. Her vivacious personality is one of God’s greatest blessings, and she is a light to everyone she meets. Besides that, she is an awesome herdsman–when she needs to be! My oldest daughter Kelsie graduated from the University of Georgia (UGA) in agricultural communications. Following graduation, she spent time working in agriculture policy and now works in corporate marketing in Lexington, Kentucky. My youngest daughter Katelyn is also majoring in agricultural communications at UGA and is developing her passion for agriculture, both in her studies and her time working at the university’s dairy. I have invested thirty years of time, effort and financing into a breed and industry that have become my life. Understanding and appreciating the value of this breed, I desire to make this breed flourish. If elected, I promise to dedicate all that I can to our future success.

Lori Maude, South Dakota It is an honor to be nominated for the AGA Board of Directors. I was first introduced to Gelbvieh cattle in 1997, when I was hired as the AGA director of communications and Gelbvieh World editor. A job that I thought would be a fouryear gig turned into nearly 12 years and a love for the cattle and the people that didn’t end when I left AGA in 2009. Together with my parents (Marvin and Mae), my sisters (Julie and LeAnn), niece (Jayden) and nephews (Carl and Clayton), we run 200 head of commercial and registered Gelbvieh and Balancer® cattle in southwestern South Dakota. Our registered cattle are marketed under CJ&L Livestock and we will host our 5th annual bull sale this December. We have also sold cattle through the Black Hills Stock Show in Rapid City for the past 18 years. The people that raise Gelbvieh cattle are passionate about breeding cattle that excel regardless of the environment they run in. I was so lucky to meet and visit with many Gelbvieh breeders that shared their expertise and wisdom. My day-job for 25 plus years has been ag communications and marketing. Since I departed AGA, I have been fortunate to work for two of the top agricultural advertising agencies in the country. I can bring to the AGA Board of Directors expertise in building a brand strategy and messaging, as well as new ideas to share our Gelbvieh message. I am openminded, with no hidden agendas and can truly look at both sides of an issue before making a decision. I want to serve the membership and give back to the breed that gave me so many opportunities. I would appreciate your vote and hope to see many of you at the AGA National Convention in Nashville.

GW 48th Annual AGA National Convention Andrea Murray, Oklahoma I would like to start by extending my gratitude to the nominating committee for the invitation to rerun for the AGA Board of Directors. It has been an honor to serve the membership of the AGA these last three years. I would be remiss if I didn’t acknowledge what a privilege it has been to serve the membership. For those I haven’t had the pleasure of meeting, my husband Matt and I reside in rural Oklahoma. We have two boys: Braxton, 12 and Breckon, 8. We have a diversified farming and cow-calf operation. We utilize both Gelbvieh and Balancer® genetics in our seedstock and commercial cattle. I’m excited about the progress that Gelbvieh has achieved the last several years, and especially in the last few months with the release of BOLT-powered expected progeny differences (EPDs). That being said, we must continue to position Gelbvieh for the future. It is still my belief that this goal will best be reached by focusing on our breed’s strong attributes, e.g., fertility, longevity, stayability, yield grade, and growth. At the same time, it is important to recognize that there is still room for improvement in birth weight and marbling. We need to continue to hold a strong presence in established marketplaces while creating excitement and promoting Gelbvieh in new areas and new ways. Additionally, my own experiences and those that I share with my sons make me a strong advocate and supporter of the American Gelbvieh Junior Association. This program holds a vital role in shaping the future leaders of the AGA and of the beef industry. I would also like to take a moment to personally invite all our members to attend the 48th Annual American Gelbvieh Association National Convention “Meeting Modern Industry Demands: Raising the Bar,”

in Nashville, Tennessee, on November 28 through 30, 2018. We have seen an increasing number of members participate in convention and committee meetings. I would like to see the trend continue this year and for many more to come. I would like to finish by saying that I have enjoyed my time on the board and would be honored to serve you once again. If you feel like I would continue to contribute in a positive way to the board, I would appreciate your vote either in person or through an absentee ballot.

Randy Sienknecht, Iowa As a native of Gladbrook, Iowa, I bought my first Gelbvieh cow in 1990 at the Reiter Dispersal in Iowa. I then bought six bred heifers from Jim Horton. Today, I run 140 head of spring and fall calving cows on 500 acres of owned and rented grass. My wife, Melissa, and I have three children: Adelyn, Alaney, and Ashton. I have served four terms on the Gelbvieh Breeders of Iowa board, am actively involved in the Tama County Cattlemen’s Association and am a member of both the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association and the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association. I also serve as a Gelbvieh representative on the Iowa Beef Breeds Council. I am honored to be nominated to run for a second term on the AGA Board. It is important for Gelbvieh and Balancer® cattle to remain relevant in the commercial beef industry. We need to continue to aggressively grow our herd book and increase registrations. The growth and maternal traits of Gelbvieh are needed in the industry, and as breeders, we need to continue to promote those traits. It is essential for Gelbvieh breeders to become involved in their state

48th Annual AGA National Convention GW associations and attend national events. An active membership helps drive interest in our breed, improves the genetics we use, and helps all of us become better cattle breeders.

Angus breed, I realized the benefit of crossing the two breeds and have been crossing registered Gelbvieh and Angus since the early ‘90s, which was well before the name “Balancers®” existed

Together we can make our breed stronger and grow in numbers. I believe Gelbvieh can rise to be in the top three of beef breed registrations and I believe I can help the breed achieve that milestone. I would work hard for the membership, listen to your concerns, and do my best to help our breed flourish. Thank you for the nomination.

As a member of the AGA for 35 years, I bring a significant amount of commercial breeding and feeding experience to the table. I strive to stay informed and communicate well with many breeders across the nation. During my time on the board, I’ve had the pleasure of meeting several new acquaintances and I look forward to further developing those relationships

Jeff Swanson, Nebraska

Swanson Cattle Company holds a yearly production sale where we offer our bulls as well as a select lineup of females. I always work hard to present the very best genetics in our sale each year. My family, employees, and I are dedicated to the Gelbvieh breed and continue to work at improving our operation.

This letter expresses why I, Jeff Swanson, feel I would represent the AGA in a positive way during a second term on the AGA Board of Directors. It has been an honor serving on the AGA board the past three years.

If I were elected to a second term on the board, I would like to continue targeting the commercial producers, feedyards, and livestock markets regarding how well Gelbvieh and Balancer-influenced cattle perform in the commercial and feeding environment. My personal goal is to pass on the positive traits that I have learned in my life not only to my sons, Seth and Zack; but to all young cattlemen whom I have had the opportunity to interact with. I look forward to seeing a new generation of honest, very hard working cattlemen and women that will continue to improve the Gelbvieh breed.

I was born and raised on a Nebraska farm and ranch where my father introduced me into the commercial cattle operation along with hard work, accountability, and honesty. As the owner and operator of Swanson Cattle Company located near Atlanta, Nebraska, our operation has always had a “lead by example” atmosphere and I’m proud to have the opportunity to instill these traits in my children as well as the younger generation of cattlemen and women that I conduct business with. My wife, Denice, and I have one daughter and two sons. They have given us five grandchildren, all of whom I enjoy spending time with on our ranch.I have raised cattle most of my life. I first became interested in the Gelbvieh breed because of their gentle disposition and maternal traits. After studying the

Al and Mary’s devotion to the Gelbvieh breed began in 1996 when they purchased their first Gelbvieh bull. Over the past 22 years they have had a tremendous impact on the association and, more importantly, the people within it. And while the Knapps will disperse their cowherd on November 10, 2018, there’s little worry that the couple will be leaving their Gelbvieh ties behind. The Knapp family has run a successful registered Gelbvieh operation, but perhaps one of their most commendable endeavors has been their volunteer service. Al and Mary served 16 years as American Gelbvieh Junior Association (AGJA) advisors. During that time they inspired countless Gelbvieh youth to become leaders within the beef industry and beyond and have mentored many current leaders in the Gelbvieh breed. To this day the pair is still supporting and sponsoring the AGJA even after they retired from their role as AGJA advisors. Al, with Mary’s support, has also dedicated many years to leadership within the AGA as a member of the board of directors, which was capped off with a year as president in 2010. Al and Mary are currently dedicating time and service to the Gelbvieh breed through their participation on the American Gelbvieh Foundation Board of Directors where Al currently serves as president and Mary a director. Al has also served as the Gelbvieh show superintendent at the American Royal Livestock Show in Kansas City, Missouri, since 2003. Al and Mary Knapp take service-centered leadership to a whole new level and their dedication and passion for the Gelbvieh and Balancer® breed, their fellow breeders, and the association’s youth is the standard of the breed. Both the AGA and AGJA are improved associations because of the relentless efforts and many sacrifices of Al and Mary Knapp.

The Merits of Gelbvieh and Balancer® Females By Tom Strahm

“T

he American Rancher” fall 2018 episode featuring Gelbvieh and Balancer genetics recently premiered October 1, on RFD-TV. If you missed it, I encourage you to watch on www.gelbvieh.org under the News & Media tab. Much of this recent American Rancher episode focused on the hardiness, adaptability and the overall ability of Gelbvieh and Balancer® females to not only survive, but also thrive in the extremely harsh desert conditions found in Arizona and the American Southwest. I would like to take this opportunity to say, thank you,

again, to Kit Metzger, Kyle Best, Dan Major, and Gary Wilson. Thank you for hosting us on your ranches and allowing us to get a glimpse of your daily life. Producing an episode like this would not be possible without your cooperation! The first time I had the opportunity to meet these Arizona ranchers was in November 2017. They were in a severe drought at that time, and the drought was persisting through April 2018 when we filmed the footage for this American Rancher episode. I am thankful to hear they had been getting some monsoon rains starting in late summer. It doesn’t seem to matter what their own specific environment is like, commercial producers still appreciate many of the same economically important and relevant traits that Gelbvieh and Balancer cattle offer. Since this issue includes Dam of Merit and Dam of Distinction awards, I’ll review some of the merits of the breed. Gelbvieh and Balancer cattle offer maternal superiority. Fertility and longevity are among the most valued traits

out in the field GW of the Gelbvieh-influenced cow, which delivers increased profit potential for the beef producer. Gelbvieh females reach puberty at an early age thus providing the opportunity for the replacement female to breed, calve, and begin a sustained and productive life at a young age. Subsequently, they are well suited to maintain a regular calving interval. Gelbvieh females provide increased stayability. Stayability refers to the reproductive longevity of the cow. Females that calve early in life stay in the herd longer, and thus are more profitable. “We like the crossbred cow immensely,” says Gary Wilson of Seligman, Arizona. “She has the hybrid vigor and a little more longevity than a straightbred.” In addition to longevity and stayability, Gelbviehinfluenced females wean large, growthy calves due to their inherent milking ability. Nevertheless, because of their moderate mature size, Gelbvieh-influenced females offer increased maternal efficiency and adaptability to a wide range of environments throughout the country. Gelbvieh and Balancer females can increase the pounds of calf weaned per cow exposed while reducing the amount of required inputs. Getting more live calves

on the ground is critical to the profitability of any cow-calf operation. The Gelbvieh and Balancer breed has lowered birth weights and increased calving ease to meet the demands of today’s beef industry. The U. S. Meat Animal Research Center (U.S. MARC) ranks Gelbvieh No. 1 for the most moderate mature cow size, and the earliest to mature of the seven major beef breeds. Harry Haythorn, who ranches in the Nebraska Sandhills, was one of the commercial producers interviewed for a 2017 episode of American Rancher and I would like to conclude with a quote from him: “I was looking for a breed to cross breed with our predominantly Angus-influenced cows. I knew, and everybody else knows, that crossbreeding works. I wasn’t interested in using a terminal cross because I wanted to be able to keep more of our heifers for replacements. I visited with other producers, my veterinarian, and with other people in the cattle industry. We thought the Gelbvieh breed would be a good complement to our Angus-based cowherd. We like the versatility of the Gelbvieh influence.” D

GW data bulletin

Building a Better Cow By Tonya Amen, AGA Breed Improvement Consultant

G

elbvieh breeders now have more tools at their disposal than ever before to building accuracy on expected progeny differences (EPDs) and to place selection pressure on reproductive traits. In addition to the classic milk (Milk) and calving ease maternal (CEM) EPDS, the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) also offers heifer pregnancy (HP), pregnant at 30 (PG30), and stayability (STAY). These are important EPDs that give you the opportunity to select for economically relevant traits that really impact your bottom line and especially that of your commercial customers. In the last year, Gelbvieh breeders have submitted exposure data that is critical for use in these EPDs. • Heifer pregnancy (HP): This EPD predicts the probability that a bull’s daughters will become pregnant as first-calf heifers in a regular breeding season. HP is expressed as a percent, so a higher value of this EPD is better. Higher HP EPDs indicate that a higher percentage of a sire’s daughters are expected to get pregnant as first calf heifers compared to the daughters of other sires in his contemporary group. • 30-month pregnancy (Pg30): This EPD predicts the probability that a bull’s daughters will become pregnant and calve at three years of age, given that they calved as first-calf heifers. PG30 is expressed as a percent, so, once again, a higher number is more desirable. Higher values for PG30 indicate a higher percentage of a sire’s daughters are expected to calve at three years of age, given they calved as first-calf heifers when compared to the daughters of other sires in his contemporary group. • Stayability (ST): This EPD is predicts the probability that a bull’s daughters will stay productive within a herd to at least six year of age. Again, higher numbers are more desirable, as they indicate a higher probability that a bull’s daughters will stay

30 | NOVEMBER 2018

in the herd compared to daughters of other bulls in his contemporary group. The stayability EPD is one of the best measures currently available to compare a bull’s ability to produce females with reproductive longevity. In addition, to ease selection decisions, AGA also offers a multi-trait selection index. The value of a selection index is that each trait is married to an economic value, which allows the trait to be properly weighted in the decision and for the index to be reported in easily-interpreted dollars and cents. This type of appropriate weighting including economic values would not be possible if each EPD had to be evaluated on its own. The most comprehensive selection index offered by AGA that includes the traits discussed above is $Cow. $Cow is reported in dollar and cents and represents the expected profit differences when retaining daughters of bulls as replacement heifers. A higher value indicates more profitable maternal genetics. $Cow includes classic measures of maternal ability like stayability, reproductive efficiency, milk, calving ease, mature size and calf growth. It also takes into account feedyard growth and efficiency as well as the value of carcass traits. In addition to cow exposure data and other performance weights and measures, Gelbvieh breeders also have the opportunity to make use of genomic testing to improve the accuracy of the reproductive EPDs. Finally, using EPDs to identify parents with the best maternal genetics is extremely important. But, we should never forget the value of how we chose to use and combine those genetics in mating systems. The value of retaining Gelbvieh-sired crossbred females cannot be understated. There are well documented economic benefits to making use of crossbred females including: higher pregnancy rates, increased calf survival, higher weaning weights, and improved cow longevity, just to name a few. This will be discussed in more detail in upcoming issues of Gelbvieh World. D

or 27 years, the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) has recognized females in the AGA herd book that demonstrate maternal superiority. The Dam of Distinction and Dam of Merit program recognizes members who make it a point to place emphasis on the all-important maternal traits Gelbvieh and BalancerÂŽ cows are known for throughout the country. The Dam of Merit honor recognizes cows that meet strict selection criteria including early puberty and conception, regular calving intervals and above average weaning weights on at least three calves. Of the 37,429 cows currently assessed in 2018, only 6.3 percent qualify for the Dam of Merit award. The Dam of Distinction award recognizes cows that meet the same high standards, in addition to

Top 20 Owners Name

exhibiting superior, long-term productivity with at least eight calves. Just over 1 percent of all of the active Gelbvieh and Balancer cows qualify for this elite group. Flip though the list to see the top 10 states ranked by the combined total of Dams of Merit and Dams of Distinction as well as the top 20 owners, top 20 breeders, and a list of membership ranking by state both for the Dam of Merit and Dam of Distinction awards in the owner category. Congratulations to those members listed for this prestigious accomplishment and for their commitment to producing superior maternally-focused females!

Mission: Convention By Danielle Stock

I

n planning my trip to the 2018 American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) National Convention, I started thinking about this year’s theme “Meeting Modern Industry Demands: Raising the Bar” and what it means to the American Gelbvieh Junior Association (AGJA).

Promotion Never be afraid to tell anyone about the positive traits that the Gelbvieh and Balancer® breed brings to the beef industry. Social media is a huge part of spreading the word about Gelbvieh cattle. As an advocate for the Gelbvieh breed, you can promote the breed by showing at local, regional, state and national shows. Give presentations and write papers about what the Gelbvieh breed excels in and what it means to you. You never know who is listening and whom you could inspire to learn more about Gelbvieh.

Fundraising Fundraising has never been something that I enjoyed doing and maybe you feel the same way. However, we all love the Junior Classic and regional shows. Many of the funds that go to these events come from the donation heifer raffle that takes place each year. I challenge every junior to sell at least 30 tickets and to go up and talk to five breeders that are not a part of the Gelbvieh breed. As the Iowa Junior Gelbvieh Association advisor says, “Take your

tickets everywhere and try to sell one to every person you see. You won’t sell to everyone, but every ticket sold adds up!” You can also start thinking about silent auction items for junior nationals. If there is something intriguing that you would love to own or experience, you are probably not the only one. Many of the best-selling items are things that juniors and their families would love to have. This is a great way to get creative with your state organization and family. My second challenge for each state’s junior and adult association to donate an item for the silent auction. The funds raised through the silent auction help the AGJA Board of Directors implement new activities during the Junior Classic show and plan awesome leadership conferences for our members.

Participation We can raise the bar at the Junior Classic by being present and getting involved. Competing in various contests not only grows your knowledge of the Gelbvieh breed but deepens your understanding of the beef industry. I challenge every member to try a new contest, apply to be a junior or intermediate ambassador, or run to serve on the board of directors. Stepping out of your comfort zone allows you to grow personally and professionally. Our greatest accomplishments in life occur when we decide to engage and push ourselves to go beyond our limits. Embrace new opportunities and you will be amazed by the incredible things to come. Be an active junior and a positive voice for the beef industry and the Gelbvieh breed. If we all strive to better ourselves in the key areas of promotion, fundraising, and participation we can make a huge difference. Together, we can ultimately “Raise the Bar.” D

The Beef Balance Sheet By Derrell S. Peel, Oklahoma State University Extension Livestock Marketing Specialist

S

upply and demand flows for most agricultural markets are commonly summarized in the form of supply and utilization tables, often called the balance sheet. The balance sheet generally includes supply components as: Beginning Stocks + Imports + Production = Total Supply. Utilization includes demand components as: Exports + Total Use + Ending Stocks = Total Utilization. For some commodities, use may be disaggregated into several use categories. For beef, total use is not directly measured and thus is calculated as Total Disappearance from other balance sheet categories. The Livestock Marketing Information Center (LMIC) provides supply and utilization tables for meat commodities along with feedgrain and hay markets which include current and recent balance sheet values as well as forecasts for the next couple of years. All values reported below are annual totals. The current LMIC beef balance sheet projects beef total supply for 2018 at 30.763 billion pounds including Beginning Stocks of 649 million pounds; Total Production of 27.102 billion pounds and Imports of 3.012 billion pounds. In contrast to grain markets, beginning and ending stocks of beef are minor (2018 beginning stocks are 2.1 percent of total supply) because the perishable nature of meat precludes large carryover from year to year. Beginning and ending stocks consist of cold storage holdings plus short term pipeline supplies of beef in wholesale and retail markets. Beef utilization in 2018 is estimated as: Exports, 3.149 billion pounds; Total Disappearance of 26.824 billion pounds; and Ending Stocks of 790 million pounds. This level of total disappearance is equivalent to domestic per capita beef consumption of 57.2 pounds (retail basis). The balance sheet accounts for all supply among the various demand categories.

40 | NOVEMBER 2018

Compared to the 2017 beef balance sheet, projected 2018 values show beginning stocks down by 14.3 percent; total production which includes commercial production plus a minor amount of farm production, up by 3.2 percent; and imports up fractionally by 0.6 percent, all leading to total supply up 2.5 percent year over year. On the demand side, exports are projected up 10.1 percent; total disappearance, up 1.2 percent; and ending stocks up 21.7 percent. Per capita consumption in 2018 is projected to be up 0.5 percent from 2017.

P

er capita consumption in 2019 is forecast to increase to 57.6 pounds, up 0.7 percent year over year.

Current forecasts for 2019 include beginning stocks up 21.7 percent year over year; total production up 1.7 percent; and imports down 4.5 percent leading to a total supply up 1.6 percent year over year. Exports are forecast to increase 2.7 percent in 2019; total disappearance is projected to increase 1.5 percent and ending stocks to decrease by 0.6 percent. Per capita consumption in 2019 is forecast to increase to 57.6 pounds, up 0.7 percent year over year. The current balance sheet estimates will change. Balance sheet projections and forecasts are revised regularly to reflect new information and changing market conditions. Beef production is relatively easier to forecast given that animal numbers which will factor into beef supply are already on the ground, but total supply will reflect less certain impacts of changing carcass weights and dairy sector contributions to beef supply. Of course, supply or demand shocks such as major drought impacts, disease outbreaks or other factors may appear unexpectedly at any time. Beef exports and imports are particularly difficult to forecast given the volatility and uncertainty of the current global market situation. D Source: Oklahoma State University Extension

Megan Slater to Serve as AGA Interim Executive Director

A

merican Gelbvieh Association President Scott Starr and the Board of Directors would like to announce Megan Slater as its interim executive director. Slater has been with the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) since 2014 and has most recently held the position of director of operations and public relations. In her time at the AGA, Slater has played a vital role in maintaining the Gelbvieh message through marketing efforts and membership communication, office operations, and the planning of the AGA National Convention. “For the past seven months, Megan has done an impressive job of running the AGA by exhibiting organization, knowledge, and ability,” Starr said. “The board feels we have one of the bright upcoming individuals in the beef industry and are honored to have her on the AGA team.”

42 | NOVEMBER 2018

In her role as interim executive director, Slater will continue to lead the AGA staff in accomplishing the goals of the AGA’s Meeting Modern Industry Demands Strategic Plan. Slater is a graduate of Colorado State University (CSU) with a bachelor’s degree in animal science and minor in business administration. Through her involvement at CSU and her time at AGA, Slater has gained valuable beef industry and business experience. “I am excited for this new opportunity with the AGA and look forward to continuing to grow the Association and the Gelbvieh and Balancer® breed’s market share within the beef industry,” Slater said. “It’s an honor to continue to work with AGA members and Gelbvieh and Balancer stakeholders in this new role.” D

Feeding LowQuality Hay

rapidly and mature quicker, which may decrease overall forage quality and require additional supplementation to meet cow nutrient requirements.

By Ben Beckman and Mariah Woolsoncroft, Nebraska Extension Educator

T

his year, wet weather has many producers putting up hay much later in the season than normal. A late harvest date means grasses have already produced seed heads and are rapidly declining in forage nutrient value. While having even low quality hay on hand for winter feed is better than none, producers will need to consider the challenges of meeting cattle nutrient requirements this winter. During a normal year, hay harvest starts in late June or early July when quality is generally higher at over 10% crude protein (CP) and >50% total digestible nutrients (TDN). The higher quality is due to a higher leaf to stem ratio, as leaves are higher in protein and energy. A delay in cutting and harvesting until late-July or August can have a negative impact on quality. Stems and seedheads are lower in protein and energy, so as grasses mature later into the season forage quality declines. In wet years, forages tend to grow more

It is important for producers to react to a cow’s changing nutrient requirements depending on if the cow is lactating or stage of gestation. For example, a 1,200 lb. gestating cow may need 1.5 lb. CP daily in its diet to maintain body condition. Compare that with a 1,200 lb. lactating cow that may need 3 lb. CP per day. It is important to understand cow weights and milk production in a herd, for a producer to balance nutrient requirements without over or underfeeding. With most management decisions, the more information we have to plan the better outcome we can achieve, and for a livestock producer that would include having harvested feed analyzed. Sample hay according to lots, typically less than 100 ton of hay that is grouped by bales of the same forage type, harvested in the same area, and harvested at a similar time. Take multiple samples per lot (15-20 round bales should be adequate) and use a mechanical probe to core and collect a sample (15-20 cores). If available forage or harvested feedstuff does not meet the protein needs of the animal, supplementing protein from other sources would be the next step. To decrease supplemental costs, producers should price supplements on a $/lb. of CP basis rather than $/ton basis. D
