GW view from the board

Remember Our Role as Seedstock Producers By Scott Starr

W

e’re quickly approaching a significant event for the American Gelbvieh Association, which is the 48th Annual AGA National Convention. It’s the biggest AGA event of the year and decisions made during convention have a lasting impact on the Gelbvieh and Balancer® breed. Before we pack our bags and head to Nashville, I would like us to reflect on what’s important to our role as seedstock producers and as a breed association.

1. Without data, you are just another person with an opinion. We must keep collecting data to give the cow-calf producers and ultimately feedyards a reason to buy our genetics. We want these breeding decisions to make them breed, feed, and eat like no other bovine in the world. Always remember, a dead calf has no growth rate, a bad cow eats just as much (or more) as a good cow, and quality will always sell at a premium.

2. Gelbvieh was the first breed to endorse crossbreeding and heterosis through our Balancer program. The foresight we had then as a breed is paying dividends to our seedstock producers today. I can assure you that the forward-thinking mindset that was going on back then is still present today in the AGA boardroom. Many ideas also get brought forth from convention, so plan to attend this year’s convention in Nashville, Tennessee. It’s where I hope to see a lot of our ideas start to come to fruition. One of my favorite quotes is very fitting for this discussion, “Without vision, you will perish.”

3. The biological constraints of beef production prove the tremendous ability of beef producers to keep ahead. The poultry industry can change genetics 5.7 times in one year; think what we could do with beef cows if we

6 | OCTOBER 2018

had those capabilities. It also means we cannot make mistakes and I believe this really sums up Gelbvieh and Balancer breeders! As time rolls on you will see that chasing fads or single trait selecting did not, and will not, pay off for other breeds.

4. Seedstock producers are responsible for supplying the genetics to the beef industry, which ultimately affects the quality U.S beef. The feedyard is another major player in beef quality. The feedyard managers of this industry are masters at taking cattle of different biological types and getting them close to the same end-product value. Feedyards are also some of the best information venues for understanding efficiency, which is another trait we must select and breed for to keep our cattle at the front end of high-quality feeding cattle.

5. The U.S. beef industry owns the high-quality beef sector on a global scale. Much of this achievement is due to our infrastructure of having the genetics, feeding capabilities, and harvest facilities, all with the safety that is second to no other country. We need to keep the foot on the accelerator to maintain this global edge. One way to help keep the competition at bay is to get out and search for breed-leading genetics that fit into the environment and the much bigger picture of the beef industry. If we keep the big picture as a goal, we will find our target. Don’t get caught up on the little things; we must have our commercial producers’ aim in mind when we make all mating decisions. As technology advances, they will have individual data on every operation in the U.S.; and let me tell you, the more advanced harvest and feeding facilities already do! So get out and find the industry-leading Gelbvieh and Balancer genetics that will take us to the target.

6. An elite cattleman once told me before I could ever sell a bull I needed to feed a few pens of cattle. Only then would I not have problems raising bulls that the industry needs. D

questions the AGA staff has been asked regarding the program:

What is the purpose of AGA Expanded Membership Services? AGA Expanded Membership Services is made up of three separate programs designed for AGA members who would like to intensify their relationship with the AGA and would like additional services on top of what they already receive from the association. The purpose of AGA Expanded Membership Services is to provide tools and talent available at the AGA to assist in strategic planning, marketing, and genetic selection. The three different program levels are geared for both large and small members with the goal of enhancing their respective operations.

A

GA Expanded Membership Services is made up of three separate programs designed for AGA members who would like to intensify their relationship with the AGA and would like additional services on top of what they already receive from the association.

For example, by participating in an AGA Expanded Membership Services program we (AGA staff and member) will identify the current state of your operation as a team, and then pinpoint areas for improvement based on your production goals. The same approach can be taken from a marketing prospective: the team assesses the current reach and works to implement a plan to capture additional customers.

How far in advance of my sale do I need to sign up for this program? If you are using an Expanded Membership Service program to promote an upcoming production sale, private treaty offering, or another event, you will need to sign up at least two months prior to your sale, but the sooner the better.

over the fence GW What are some examples of services that are provided by this program? Expanded Membership Services is a tailor-made program to fit the AGA member’s specific needs. Over the last year, the AGA has provided marketing advice to the participants in a variety of ways, including focusing on the opportunity of reaching new potential customers through a third-party mailing list purchased by the AGA for the Profit Picture publication and other promotional materials. Gelbvieh Media Productions can also design a variety of promotional materials, from post cards, sale catalogs and fliers.

Do you place the ads in other magazines for us? By participating in an Expanded Membership Service program, the AGA does not place ads in other magazines for you, we simply identify where the best places for you to advertise in that are within your budget and exposure goals. We can also connect you with the right contacts to place those ads.

What are some experiences of past participants? AGA Expanded Membership Services has been used by AGA members located across the U.S. These members have seen positive results from their bull sale outcomes, are achieving improvements in genetic progress, and have continued their participation in this unique service. D

Is the mailing list the AGA non-member bull buyer list, and do I get the addresses myself? The AGA does not sell the non-member bull buyer list and does not use that list for Expanded Membership Services. The Expanded Membership Services mailing list is pulled from the purchased The Profit Picture mailing list, which specifically targets high beef concentrated counties across the U.S. and does not specifically target Gelbvieh and BalancerŽ customers. The mailing list is tailored to each Expanded Membership Services member and strategically chosen to accomplish goals based on location, radius and herd size and is an addition to the member’s existing customer list. These addresses are then sent directly to the printer from the Association. Participants of Expanded Membership Services do not personally receive the mailing list.

GW information exchange American Gelbvieh Association and IMI Global Release Balancer® Edge Source and Age Verification Program The American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) is pleased to announce a recent partnership with IMI Global and introduce Balancer® Edge, a source and age verification program for feeder cattle sired by Gelbvieh and Balancer bulls. The Balancer® Edge program requires a minimum of 75 percent of the sires used to be registered Gelbvieh and Balancer bulls, and these bulls must be a minimum of 25 percent Gelbvieh genetics. The verification process for this program requires producers to submit first and last calf born date, head count support, and registration papers of the sires to verify Gelbvieh genetics. Additional information about the Balancer® Edge program can be found in the September Profit Picture publication and on Gelbvieh.org.

AGA Photo Contest Give us your best shot! GW 48th Annual AGA National Convention

Let’s Raise the Bar in Nashville!

T

he 48th Annual American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) Annual Convention is one you won’t want to miss. AGA members and Gelbvieh and Balancer® stakeholders, make plans to join the AGA in Nashville, Tennessee, November 28 through 30, 2018! This convention, themed “Meeting Modern Industry Demands: Raising the Bar,” is sure to provide educational, networking, and planning sessions designed for the betterment of the Gelbvieh and Balancer breed. The AGA has worked hard all year to provide attendees with another unforgettable event. The annual convention, to be held this year at the Nashville Airport Marriott, begins on Wednesday afternoon with the opening general session. This event will focus on setting the stage for an exciting few days ahead with the AGA. While the opening general session is the official start to convention, all AGA members are invited to attend the AGA Board of Directors meeting, taking place on Wednesday morning. The highlight of the day on Wednesday will be the kick-off reception which will include an AGA welcome, overview of convention events, and more. Hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar will be available. The 4th Annual Cattlemen’s Profit Roundup will be an event you and your commercial customers won’t want to miss! This education symposium is tailored especially to fit the interests and needs of commercial bull customers, feeders, and beef industry partners. This year’s focus will be on adding value to calves in today’s modern beef industry. Following the Cattlemen’s Profit Roundup, attendees and speakers will head to the heart of Nashville to Nashville Underground on lower Broadway for the bull pen session. Nashville Underground is a live music venue, bar and restaurant in downtown Nashville where attendees can network with fellow convention-goers and symposium speakers. The convention will also host traditional events as well. Below is a listing of the reoccurring events at convention: Committee meetings: All committee meetings will be held during convention. All members are

encouraged to attend and participate in the meetings. It doesn’t matter if you are on a committee, or would just like to become more involved with the AGA; we hope you join us for the committee sessions. An association is only as strong as its members’ participation and enthusiasm for the organization. American Gelbvieh Foundation (AGF) Event: Join the AGF for an educational session to learn more about planning for the future and resources to make estate planning easier. Annual AGA Membership Meeting: Members are encouraged to attend the Annual Membership Meeting where the members of the AGA Board of Directors will be elected and attend to official association business. To cap off Friday’s scheduled events and to close out the convention, AGA and AGF will be hosting an evening awards banquet complete with a steak dinner to celebrate the achievements of our membership and customers. Awards will be presented to the newest AGA Hall of Fame inductee, the Breeder of the Year and Commercial Producer of the Year. The event will also include a chance for members to place bids on which steer(s) they think will win the AGF Steer Challenge and Scale & Rail Contest. We hope to see you at the AGA’s most exciting event of the year, the 48th Annual AGA National Convention “Meeting Modern Industry Demands: Raising the Bar.” Check back in the November Gelbvieh World for even more convention event details! FOOD:

I

t’s time to dust off your nice hat, shine your boots, and check your cows on the way out because Gelbvieh breeders and industry partners are headed to Nashville, Tennessee, for the 48th Annual AGA National Convention, “Meeting Modern Industry Demands: Raising the Bar.” This year’s convention is packed with leading industry speakers, association business, an exciting industry tour, networking and live entertainment. But who said the fun has to stop when convention wraps up with the awards banquet Friday evening? Why not make a weekend trip out of it? Here’s my two cents on how to enjoy some time off and capture the full scope of what the city has to offer from the food scene to history, and don’t forget the music and nightlife.

Of course, we are starting with food, because well, it’s the South and that’s one of the best parts of traveling. Follow along for three mouthwatering musthaves in Music City.

The 100 Layer Doughnut at Five Daughters Bakery Home of the 100 layer doughnut, Five Daughters Bakery is family owned and operated by Isaac and Stephanie Meek along with their five daughters. The 100 layer doughnut is sure to be an experience you will want to have more than once. This doughnut owes its concept to the cronut, the croissantdonut hybrid and takes up to three days to make. Be sure to check out their donutcam online to see if there are any doughnuts left for the day before heading to the bakery.

Nashville’s Famous Hot Chicken at Hattie B’s We know this is a cattle producer’s convention, but insert Nashville into the “When in Rome” statement and try this famous chicken. Also known as the bird that bites back, Nashville hot chicken is a type of fried chicken that is a local specialty. Hot chicken is something near and dear to native Nashvillians. Located on Broadway, Hattie B’s Hot Chicken is a fierce, mouthwatering sight that’s sure to leave you full and fulfilled.

Fine Dining at Jimmy Kelly’s Steakhouse Housed in a glorious Southern mansion in the heart of Music City Jimmy Kelly’s was founded in 1934 while the country was in the throes of the Great Depression and just one year removed from the repeal of prohibition, Jimmy Kelly made a promise to himself and his diners. Simply put, he would serve a great steak, a generous portion of whiskey and ensure the service was always attentive. This iconic restaurant is known to be where the deal was cut to bring the Titans to Nashville and is a standard by which all American steakhouses are measured.

SIGHTS TO SEE: One of the 25 largest cities in the United States, Nashville’s historical and cultural significance spans more than 230 years. From unique historical sites and attractions, to celebrating the city’s musical heritage follow along for a day that’s sure to be packed with just a glimpse of what Nashville is all about.

Andrew Jackson’s Hermitage 1 Home of the people’s president nearly every facet of Jackson’s life revolved around his mansion at The Hermitage. Visit The Hermitage to take a walk through Andrew Jackson’s life and home that has been restored with most of Jackson’s original belongings, explore the beautiful, vintage Tennessee plantation, and Jackson’s tomb.

Country Music Hall of Fame 2 Nashville will always be home to country music. So, no visit to Nashville is complete without a trip to The Country Music Hall of Fame nicknamed the “Smithsonian of Country Music.” The Hall of Fame has one of the largest collections and research center that walks you through the history of country music.

The Parthenon 3 Take a stroll around Centennial Park, Nashville’s premier urban park and you won’t miss the Parthenon as it stands proudly in the center of the park. The recreation of the 42-foot statue Athena is the focus of the Parthenon just as it was in ancient Greece. The building and the Athena statue are both full-scale replicas of the Athenian originals.

3

NIGHTLIFE AND MUSIC: As they say, Nashville is a drinking town with a music problem. Nashville has more than 160 live music locations and a nightlife like no other. Make your trip one to remember with a fun night.

Opry at the Ryman 4 The Grand Ole Opry is the show that made country music famous. Unlike any other concert, the Opry presents eight or more stars on each show, giving the audience a sample of each artist’s musical style. The Ryman Auditorium was opened in 1892 and hosted the Grand Ole Opry until 1974 when it moved locations to the Grand Ole Opry House, lucky for you during the 48th Annual AGA National Convention the Grand Ole Opry will be held in the original location at the Ryman Auditorium.

General Jackson Showboat 5 One of the largest showboats ever built, the grand General Jackson lets you experience Nashville as it can be seen from the beautiful Cumberland River. While rolling down the river you’ll enjoy dinner, entertainment and stunning views.

Nashville Lower Broadway 6

Take a walk down Lower Broadway and you are sure to hear the sounds of Nashville spilling out of local bars. A few of the most famous Nashville honky tonks located here are Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge known for serving famous customers such as Kris Kristofferson, Faron Young, and Willie Nelson when they were still up-and-coming artists, The Wild Horse Saloon, and Robert’s Western World.

GW out in the field

What Did You Learn Today? By Angela Vesco

E

very day after school, my mother would ask me how school went. “It was pointless AND boring,” was my go-to response. My mother would try to tell me school wasn’t pointless, but towards the end of my school days I think she just gave up trying to convince me otherwise because she would roll her eyes and move on to the next conversation. Today, much to my mother’s approval, learning is one of my favorite things to do. Now, that doesn’t mean that I am sitting in a classroom everyday listening to a teacher talk about a specific subject. I like to learn from listening to podcasts, following professional development pages on Facebook and Instagram, reading books, visiting with cattle producers and other industry professionals, and spending time with family and friends. To me, learning doesn’t mean reading a textbook and committing it to memory. It is understanding what makes people tick, what I can learn from people outside of my industry who have been successful in their field, or how I can be a better teammate, friend, sister, and daughter. Or, what skills I need to learn to better serve the beef industry to help ensure its future. My focus for my learning is about me: how I can be a better person, because if I am not the best version of me, then how am I able to positively contribute to this world and my family and friends. Now, I know that learning isn’t always easy. It takes self-discipline and time management, two things that are constantly a struggle for me. But to be successful, you have to make that a conscious decision every day. What I love about learning is that it keeps giving me the perspective that there is so much more to this world than me and what I think I know. It helps me keep the big picture in mind and that big picture is feeding the hungry world quality beef. We are all here to produce beef to feed the world; don’t lose sight of that. It takes all kinds. Gelbvieh

20 | OCTOBER 2018

and Balancer® cattle aren’t going to feed the entire world, but they are a valuable part of it. Your competition isn’t other breeds; it is the lab-grown meat or plant-based meat. If you focus on producing good quality beef cattle, then you will be successful and contributing to a better future for the industry. Are you using the technology available to select for those higher quality cattle? Have you utilized the resources available to you to learn about the new genetic evaluation or why the industry has adopted DNA technology? These are things that are a part of the future and everyone should become very familiar with it. If you aren’t learning, you are behind. If you aren’t willing to invest your time into learning about what you need to be doing today to still be around in five years, then you are behind. What is life without learning? In my opinion, it would be pretty boring. What is life without you trying to become a better person? What is life without you doing what you love and pursuing your passion? Life is too short to be wasted not using your strengths to make the world a better place. Learn what you can from other producers, breed associations, other protein industries, and other industries outside of agriculture. There is such a big world out there with so much knowledge. Remember that knowledge is power and you have every opportunity to gain knowledge. You just have to make the choice to do so. One of my favorite authors and terrific out-of-thebox thinker Seth Godin writes, “Education needs to be inconvenient because it relies on effort and discomfort to move us from where we were to where we want to be.” Think about where you want to be in five, ten, or twenty years and take some time for self-reflection to figure out what you need to accomplish your goals. Identify what you need to learn and go out there and get it. You are your only limit. D

Ag Wins withYouth Development Programs By Anna Ring

A

s my last year in 4-H comes to a close, I’ve been reflecting on how youth development programs like 4-H and FFA impact youth. I would not be the person I am today without my involvement in programs like these, including the American Gelbvieh Junior Association (AGJA). Not only do they give us an opportunity to exhibit our animals at another show, they teach us life skills like public speaking, record keeping, and sportsmanship. When I was 8 years old, I never imagined that I would be a county ambassador, which involves going into classrooms to tell kids how awesome 4-H is and encouraging them to join the organization. I never imagined I would get up in front of other 4-H’ers at the state level for the public speaking contest, but this year I did! Youth development programs, through the gentle nudge of advisors and our program coordinators, push us to try new things and to make the best better every day. And as much as we groan over completing our records, I use those same records to keep track of my cowherd. This is a necessary skill for life that we’re taught at a young age through 4-H.

We also have to learn sportsmanship. Sometimes this is taught through a rough loss, a close champion drive, and a kid wondering if all his or her hard work was for nothing. At our county fair, I love the beef barn because kids are gracious winners, gracious losers, and the parents are supportive not only of their kids but of other families as well. When we miss the purple ribbon one year, we work harder and better ourselves for the next year. The benefits of 4-H and FFA certainly go beyond the show ring. According to the National 4-H website, 4-H’ers are four times more likely to give back to their communities and two times more likely to make healthy choices. The National FFA website highlights their nearly 2,000 scholarships are given out, worth more than $2.6 million. Youth development programs build strong community members and community leaders, as well as providing assistance to help us better ourselves. I know I’m not alone when I repeat that these programs helped shape me into who I am today. If you or your child is not currently involved in a youth development program, I highly encourage it. Let’s continue to cultivate today’s youth to become tomorrow’s leaders. D

T

he American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) would like to thank Angela Vesco, director of breed growth, for her three years of service to the AGA. While on staff, Vesco served as an integral part of the marketing staff as she traveled across the country sharing the Gelbvieh and Balancer® message to commercial cattle producers. She also represented the AGA at video livestock auction sales, major industry trade shows and events, and helped shape Association marketing strategies

to demonstrate Gelbvieh and Balancer’s relevance in today’s beef industry. “The past three years have been incredible and have given me the opportunity to travel to so many beautiful places all across the country where I have been able to showcase the cattle and the people raising them. This job has also introduced me to so many great people I am proud to call friends. I couldn’t of asked for a better team to have grown with here at Gelbvieh,” Vesco said. Vesco’s last day at the AGA was September 14. She will begin her marketing and sales role at ORIgen in Billings, Montana, on October 1. The AGA staff looks forward to staying in contact with Vesco as an industry partner as she enters the next stage of her career. We wish her well in her future endeavors! D

DNA Testing and Genomic Technology

O

ver the past several years, AGA members have embraced DNA testing and have provided an enormous amount of information to the AGA registry, which is used to better predict the genetic merit of registered Gelbvieh and BalancerÂŽ cattle. The progress of genomics testing as resulted in high accuracy genomic-enhanced expected progeny differences (GE-EPDs) for enhanced selection, management and heightened breed improvement. The AGA commends its members for stepping up and embracing the technology to provide their customers with the most reliable genetic data possible.

429% 2014.....................................................................................2017

Parentage testing increased 429% from 2014 to 2017. A whopping 6,162 samples were parentage tested in 2017.

Data Collection Incentives Program

T

he American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) continually strives to provide the most accurate data describing Gelbvieh and BalancerÂŽ cattle. Increasing the amount of both phenotypic data collected and number of animals with genotypes is essential in further increasing data accuracy. The AGA recognizes that collection of some of this essential data is expensive to collect and therefore the AGA has designed an incentive program for those members who are dedicated to providing such data to the AGA Online Registry Service as well as the accuracy and value of that information. The AGA is offering monetary incentives for members who participate in DNA testing of both bulls and females, gathering feed intake phenotypes ,and sired-identified carcass data.

DNA Testing Incentive #1: DNA testing young bulls: AGA members who complete a GGP-High Density (GGP-HD) or GGP-Low Density (GGPLD) panel on a minimum of 30 percent of each year’s entire male calf crop will receive a $2 per head rebate on their entire cowherd’s annual herd assessment in the subsequent calendar year. Only bulls who are under one year of age when tested will be eligible for the incentive program. This incentive program begins with the 2018-born male calf crop and herd assessment rebates will be given starting in 2019. Herd assessment rebates will be given once herd assessments are completed by the member and must be done so by the March 15 herd assessment deadline. Once herd assessments are completed the appropriate rebate will be placed on the member account based on the number of females assessed. Incentive #2: DNA testing replacement females: AGA members that complete a GGP-HD, GGP-LD, or GGP-Ultra Low Density

Feed efficiency data must be collected in an intake system that is acceptable to the Beef Improvement

Federation and NCE. Data points that need to be turned in are: • •

Feed intake • Gain on test (start and stop weights) Residual Feed Intake (RFI)

Eligibility for this incentive credit will begin with bulls and heifers born in 2017 or later. Credits will be placed on the members account once data is submitted and NCE accepted. Carcass Data: AGA members that report actual carcass data of animals with a known pedigree will receive a $4 credit per animal record to their AGA account. Data must be acceptable to the NCE, animals with one known Gelbvieh or Balancer Registered parent and are in contemporary groups with two or more head. Data points that need to be turned in include: • • •

Recording Weaning Weights By Taylor Buckley

T

he days of 100-degree weather and long-lasting daylight are quickly coming to an end. Now that fall is here, we have a few things to look forward to such as colder weather, football season, and weaning calves. With the release of BOLT, the single-step genetic evaluation, phenotypic data continues to be a very important component in calculating expected progeny differences (EPD). The American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) encourages breeders to collect as much data as possible. Collecting and recording data ensures that EPDs for Gelbvieh and Balancer® animals are as accurate as possible. We realize recording weaning weights in your calving book may be easier than putting them into the AGA Online Registry Service, so we have laid out the steps below. After logging into the AGA Online Registry Service account, the first thing to do is queue the animals for weaning. To see a list of animals with incomplete weaning data, go to “View” on the left hand menu. This will take you to the General Profile Information page. Then click on the “Herd” tab.

Image 1

30 | OCTOBER 2018

Next, click on the “All” tab located in the row below “Herd”. This gives a list of all animals. To record weaning data, click the grey box under the “Wean” column to the right of the animal’s name and birth date. If the animal does not have a box next to it, this means the animal is less than 100 days old, or a date in the weaned column shows the animal is already weaned. Clicking the box will trigger the animal to be sent to the weaning queue. Once all of your bulls and heifers have been selected for weaning data, go into the “Work Queues” tab. The “Work Queue” tab can be found on the left hand side of the screen. This work queue option will give you a dropdown list: click on “Weaning.” (see Image 1) Once in the weaning queue you will see a work order of the weaning data you are about to record. It will show the member number and the number of calves in the order. (see Image 2) Click “Go to this Queue” to see all of the animals you have queued on this page and now a data entry screen will show up with options of data that can be entered. You may now begin entering any additional data however, be sure to enter the weaning date and the weaning weight. Animals can be added and deleted in the weaning work queue if animals are forgotten or mistakenly placed in the queue. A two-step process will need to be completed to finalize the weaning data. First you will want to validate. Validating the work queue will allow you to save the information already entered and also checks that the information is free from errors. If you have validated the weaning work queue and errors come up, look below at the error descriptors. This section will bring up

registry tips ‘n tricks GW

Image 2 the reason for the error. If you have any problems getting your errors fixed, please call the AGA office. (see Image 3) Once the work queue is validated and is free from errors, you will be able to commit the weaning data to the registry. You can view the calves that have

Image 3 added weaning data in the list of animals. Calves can be queued for yearling data at this time if that is something you have available. Please feel free to call the AGA office at 303.465.2333 with any questions. D

eaning is a good time to evaluate your cows to determine average body condition score of your herd.

What does a body condition score (BCS) tell you? BCS

% Body Fat

It is a visual estimate of the energy balance of the cow herd. It is based on a 9 point scale with 1 being emaciated and 9 being obese.

spinous processes. View Basics of Body Condition Scoring (BCS) to learn more on how to body condition score.

If I calve in the spring, why am I concerned about BCS this fall at weaning? To move a cow 1 full body condition score, requires a cow to gain 75 to 100 pounds of body weight. While she is lactating or during rapid fetal growth in late gestation the more challenging and expensive it is to change a BCS. During late gestation, a fetus will grow by 70%, taking up more room in the body cavity and displacing the rumen. As a result a higher quality feed needs to be fed, to offset the inability of the rumen to hold more feed. At the same time the rumen is being displaced, the cow’s requirements are increasing making it more challenging. While at weaning, the cow’s nutrient requirements are at her lowest (see Table 1). Perfect opportunity to put additional condition on a cow. Table 1. Nutrient requirements of cow based on production phase. Production Phase

What is the optimal BCS at calving? The goal is to have cows at a BCS 5 at calving. A BCS 5 refers to a cow with a generally good overall appearance, the fat cover over the ribs feels spongy and palatable fat cover on either side of the tail head. Since heifers are still growing, a BCS 6 is recommended at calving. BCS 6 animals will have a high degree of palpable fat over the ribs and around the tail head and firm pressure is needed to feel the

Phase 3: Weaning and mid-gestation.

Phase 4: Late gestation.

Why is it important to determine BCS? A cow’s body condition score prior to calving has the largest impact on re-breeding success. Important research by Selk et al. in 1986 reported 88-98% of the cows in a BCS 5 or greater at calving were cycling at 80 days postpartum, compared to 62% of the cows in

commercial corner post GW BCS 4 or less. Also pregnancy rate was lower amongst BCS 4 or less cows compared to the cows 5 or greater (61% vs. 90%). Based on this research, 38% of the cows that were not cycling by day 80 post calving will not maintain a 365 day calving interval and should be culled from the herd.

What factors influence BCS? Age, lactation, feed quality and availability, and parasite load are all factors that influences BCS. Young, old and heavy milking cows are typically the thinner cows in the herd. Lack of quality or quantity of feed (i.e. grass) during drought or poorly managed grazing will draw

the same research, an average herbage savings of 18.9 lb/ cow/day or 36%, resulted when early weaning was used as a management. D Courtesy of igrow.org

cows down. Regardless if cows are thin due to drought, age, or lactation, early weaning may be the best option to increase BCS prior to late gestation. A 3 year research study conducted at the NDSU Dickinson Research Station, noticed cows that had their calves early weaned gained body condition from August to November. While cows that were in the November weaned group lost BCS during the same time period. During

Davidson Gelbvieh and Lonesome Dove Tour

O

n July 28, 2018, Davidson Gelbvieh and Lonesome Dove Ranch hosted a customer appreciation day and cattle tour at their ranches southwest of Ponteix, SK, Canada. They were honoured to host tour participants from across Canada and the United States, as well as close to home, too. Friends, customers, neighbours, and family enjoyed a cow-focused afternoon of viewing

purebred Gelbvieh pairs, which the round-up crews had gathered nicely in each pasture. After touring several pastures, the day was rounded out with a beef supper, hospitality, and visiting at the sale barn. D

AGA Board of Directors Action Points for August 2018

T

he American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) Board of Directors met August 21-22, 2018, in Sheridan, Wyoming, at the Best Western Sheridan Center. The board meeting was held in conjunction with Superior Livestock Auction’s Big Horn Classic video auction. In addition to conducting official AGA business, AGA board members and staff were able attend the Superior Livestock Auction (SLA) video sale. Scott Starr, AGA president and Tom Strahm, AGA commercial marketing director were guests on “Superior Sunrise,” a television program that airs before the video sale begins. The pair discussed the new Balancer® Edge source and age verification program and they also elaborated on AGA’s push for data collection throughout the beef supply chain, especially in the feedyards. The AGA also hosted a Superior Rep Social one evening. This informal event was a great way for the SLA representatives to meet the AGA board and to learn more about the value of Gelbvieh-influenced genetics. A panel of SLA representatives along with Scott Starr answered a variety of questions from the crowd. Below is a list of action points from the board meeting: 1. Accept the August 3, 2018, conference call minutes as presented. 2. Accept the year-to-date financial statement as presented. 3. Accept 982 or 840 EID tags as a form of stand-alone permanent ID and the preferred type of permanent ID. (Further work is required by AGA committees and staff before the implementation of this new rule. The rule change will also be discussed in committee meetings at the AGA National Convention, November 28-30, 2018 in Nashville, Tennessee. The AGA will notify the membership prior to implementation.) 4. Accept freeze brand as a form of permanent ID requiring only the numerical animal ID with no year code letter or prefix required. (Further work is required by AGA committees and staff before the implementation of this new rule. The rule change will be discussed in committee meetings at the AGA National Convention, November 28-30, 2018 in Nashville, Tennessee. The AGA will notify the membership prior to implementation.)
