Fall: A Time for Observation and Reflection By John Carrel

S

ummer is winding down and the mornings have a nip in the air. We haven’t had a hard frost yet, but it should be right around the corner. It’s a great time of year in our neck of the woods because we have preconditioned and are getting ready to wean. Now it is time to evaluate those calves and see what worked and what didn’t. Evaluating embryo transfer calves can sometimes be eye opening because of how different full sibs in a flush can be. Mother Nature really does have the last say so, no matter how intricate our breeding plan is.

I

can remember as a youngster hauling our calves to the local scale in a convoy of old two-ton trucks. The first year the steers averaged over 500 pounds it was truly a reason to celebrate.

We are very particular as to which commercial cows we place embryos. If they have not consistently raised good calves, they don’t get a chance at an egg. So, why is it that the calves out of a single flush perform so differently? We just evaluated one of our flushes while we were preconditioning the calves. The flush consisted of four bull calves and two heifer calves. The recips were very similar and were all run in the same environment. The two heifer calves were up to par, as were three of the four bull calves. However, one bull calf just didn’t fit the bill, so he will get banded and added to the steer pen. To top it off, the bull calf—now steer—belonged what we thought was the best recip. At the recent American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) board meeting in Lincoln, we had the chance to tour

6 | OCTOBER 2019

GeneSeek (Neogen). It was fascinating and really gave me an appreciation of the scope of services they provide. Wouldn’t it be nice if they could tell which embryo was going to be the poor doer before they were implanted? While the technology is developed, someday maybe it will be more widely available in the beef industry. Just look at the progress we have made in the last decade. I find it interesting that GeneSeek’s largest customer species is poultry. They do have a distinct advantage in their ability to turn over generations much more rapidly than we can. However, I am secretly glad we can’t because it seems to make the reward of raising good cattle that much better. It would be nice once in a while, when a mating does not work, to say, “Oh well, we will get the chance to try to fix that in a few weeks,” rather than, “We’ve learned our lesson, and we won’t do that again next year.” The beef industry, as a whole, has advanced tremendously despite many obstacles. I can remember as a youngster hauling our calves to the local scale in a convoy of old two-ton trucks. The first year the steers averaged over 500 pounds it was truly a reason to celebrate. Now, if they don’t weigh between 600 and 650 pounds, we are searching for what went wrong. Crossbreeding has really moved us forward in a myriad of areas, and to me, this is free money. Crossbreeding has to be one of the most significant tools in today’s market, where weight is king. Yes, some of the advances in our industry are agonizingly slow, but many of these advances have the most impact in the long run. Let’s not forget that with all of these advances, the critter still has to fit the environment. We all have a happy medium that fits both our environment and the end product we are striving for. I recently had a buyer stop by looking for a donor prospect. They were from the Midwest and had access to a large quantity of feed resources. His parting words were, “I really like your cattle. If only they were a notch bigger, they would be exactly what I am looking for.” Obviously, I can’t change my program for him, as these are the females that fit my particular environment. The one-size-fits-all adage does not apply in our business. As a side note, I just noticed out of my window that a donor cow we bred back and is due next week is cranking her tail and headed for the other end of the pasture. She must have read a different gestation table than the one I did. Mother Nature strikes again. D

Ranch Work Requires More Than Just Cow Work By Megan Slater

T

here is no doubt running a cattle operation is hard work and there is always something to do: doctor calves, fix fence, work on the truck, the list goes on and on. This list of items can be described as ranch work. However, we often forget about the other work that is vital to our operation, and that is the work that is done either in the office or even off the ranch. Now I know for some people being stuck in an office behind a desk, especially when the sun is up, can be a daunting feeling and a feeling of thinking you should be getting some “real work” done. As a seedstock producer, this type of work is essential to the success of the operation and being able to meet and exceed the needs of the customer. Being a seedstock producer requires the additional responsibility of keeping adequate records, collecting good data points, and providing the most information on your animals as possible. Commercial producers look to seedstock producers to be their source of information and provide the tools they need to make decisions that will in turn help their operation to be successful. It is important to take the time to record calves with the most accurate data. It is important to take the time to transfer bulls and females in a timely manner so that your customer can start having access to the tools and services that are provided through the AGA once the animal is transferred. It is important to submit DNA tests on time so that you can have those results back in time for customers to use to make breeding/buying decisions. Not only is spending time doing the paperwork important to a ranch and vital to a seedstock operation, but so is getting off the ranch to make customer visits and attend industry events. Events such as the Beef Improvement Federation Annual Convention, Cattle Industry Convention and NCBA Trade Show, Range Beef

8 | OCTOBER 2019

Cow Symposium and of course AGA National Convention, are important to attend. Not only do attendees get to network with others in the beef industry, but they also gain valuable knowledge on the happenings of a modern beef industry. Today’s world changes rapidly and the beef industry is no different. Learning more about the technology and the tools that are available not only in the industry, but also within our own association can greatly benefit your operation. These events provide an opportunity to learn something new that may help to make the ranch work part of the job a little easier, or even help the bottom line of the operation.

L

earning more about the technology and the tools that are available not only in the industry, but also within our own association can greatly benefit your operation.

I recently came across a quote from Donnell Brown of RA Brown Ranch that really resonated with me. He said, “No one is forcing you to change, but you will have to compete with those that do.” This goes for many things in life, including the things I have mentioned in this article. No one forces you to get out into the industry and network with others, or genomic test your entire herd, but you will have to compete with those that do. You will have to compete with those folks who are involved and staying on the forefront of our fast-paced industry. I strongly encourage every member to start by taking the time to attend the upcoming AGA National Convention in Billings, Montana, December 4-6, 2019. Not only will important association business be conducted through committee meetings and the annual meeting, but it is also a chance to expand your industry knowledge through great industry tours, and of course our fifth annual Cattlemen’s Profit Roundup. GW over the fence

Over the Fence with Leoma Wells, Neogen

“Without genotyping, you can only find out who’s the best once they tell you five or six years down the road,” Wells said. “We’re shortening the window for producers, and we’re making it come to fruition.”

By Rebecca Mettler

How does a seedstock producer capitalize on the value that genomic testing provides?

L

Leoma Wells

eoma Wells is the beef cattle strategic accounts manager for GeneSeek®, a Neogen® corporation company. A part of her new role with the company is to educated seedstock and commercial producers regarding the best utilization of DNA and genomic testing within their herds to achieve optimum genetic progress.

Wells had the opportunity to speak with the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) Board of Directors before the Board toured GeneSeek’s laboratory. Follow along as we bring you the key points of her conversation with the AGA leadership regarding the important and everadvancing topic of genomics.

How does genomic testing assist with genetic prediction? Because of genetic variation, even among full siblings, genomics helps fill in the gaps of genetic prediction. Genomics is another piece of the puzzle added to pedigree information, phenotypic data, and progeny information. Cattle have 30 pairs of chromosomes, getting one from the sire and one from the dam. With all the possible combinations of chromosomes, there are one quintillion different combinations for one calf, explains Wells. “Who can account for that kind of variability? You know you have a really awesome cow, and you know you have a really awesome bull, and you’ve mated them, and you got a runt. Why did that happen? It’s because of variability.”

“I think the way you look at (genomics) is that you’re investing in your future,” Wells said. “You’re investing in the future of your breed. And, you’re doing this based off the faith that your commercial cattlemen are going to come to you and continue coming to you because you are providing them the best possible cattle with the least possible risk.” Utilizing the technology and tools available in today’s beef industry helps minimize the risk commercial customers face when purchasing genetics for their herds. On the flip side, as a seedstock producer, genomic technology provides investment into the seedstock herd for continued genetic progress at a more accelerated rate.

Should I take the time to educate my customers? “Everyone wants to know what the value in genomics is. Well, there’s no value in anything until you do a little bit of education at the forefront.” Seedstock producers can maximize the value of genomics by educating their customers about the importance of the technology. For instance, if breeders are hosting a field day or a social before a production sale, consider taking time to educate. Invite an industry partner, whether it be an Association representative or a Neogen territory manager, to discuss DNA technology and its benefits. “You’re going to increase your value, especially on your young animals; you’re going to be able to market those animals with increased value.”

over the fence GW Can you provide a real-world example of how genomics helps commercial producers select genetics with more confidence? Often commercial producers are looking to purchase a calving ease bull to add to their herd. Calving ease is an important trait to commercial producers, and when they buy a bull that is listed as a heifer bull, they expect him to be an easy calver. “This is a huge thing for your commercial producers to understand. You’ve spent the money, you’ve tested those bulls, and the reason you’ve done it is to increase confidence. When you tell the gentlemen that you’re selling him a calving ease bull, you are,” Wells said.

To put it all in perspective, Wells pointed out that in 2034, cattle producers will have 10-year-old cows in their herd from the bull purchasing decisions made this year. “If you’re not making the right decisions today and utilizing all the tools available in your toolbox to make those decisions then when we get to this point (2034), you’re going to regret it, right?” Wells said. “As a seedstock provider, you are entrusted to your customers. The commercial producer trusts you to make decisions for them. They are trusting that you do all the right things.” D Editor’s Note: Interested or have additional questions? If so, contact the AGA office at (303)465-2333.

For all your AI needs:

The progeny equivalents table is a visual that simply defines the impact that genomic testing has on genetic prediction. For example, registered Gelbvieh and Balancer animals receive the equivalent of 15 calves worth of data for calving ease and the equivalent of 21 progeny recorded for birth weight. In turn, more data results in increased EPD accuracy.

Bottom line, what are the benefits of genomic testing? “You have increased accuracy of your EPDs and you’re going to decrease the generation interval because you’re maximizing your potential. Plus, genomics allow for the more accurate evaluation of traits that are difficult to measure.”

History and Perspectives of Genomic Advancements

The most recent change in genetic improvement models has been the adoption of “Single-Step” or “One-Step.” The single-step approach is a further development in how genotypic and phenotypic data are incorporated into National Cattle Evaluations. In brief, single-step allows seamless and real-time integration methods of inputting genotypic data as a proportion of the total information used to calculate genomic-enhanced EPDs (GE-EPDs). One beneficial aspect of single-step is how precisely it identifies the variation in relationships by quantifying the common genes shared among animals and throughout the pedigree. Thus, being able to better

ver the past decade, the beef industry has been exposed to substantial evolution in methods of genetic improvement. The animal genetics community has developed statistical models for selection of new traits, continually updated traditional trait models, introduced xpected Progeny Differences (EPDs) the era of genomics, and combined these allow the comparison of animals within a advancements through various precision selection tools. There is no doubt these specific population and are expressed in the changes in the field of animal breeding have units of measurement relative to the trait of greatly improved seedstock breeders’ ability interest. Breeders were initially introduced to accomplish breeding objectives. But such change has come with a costly side effect of to EPDs as a tool derived from pedigrees, disconnect, leaving much of the industry records, or indicator traits, and at its with questions as to why this rapid change foundation this has not changed. is occurring and how to best utilize the selection tools/technologies.

E

Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs) allow the comparison of animals within a specific population and are expressed in the units of measurement relative to the trait of interest. Breeders were initially introduced to EPDs as a tool derived from pedigrees, records, or indicator traits, and at its foundation this has not changed. A new age of genetic prediction was revealed to cattlemen in the form of information derived from DNA. In the beginning genomic information was first represented as Molecular Breeding Values (MBVs), a separate value from EPDs. This led to a conundrum for producers attempting to find balance in the selection pressure between MBVs and EPDs. The solution was integrating MBVs with EPDs in National Cattle Evaluations as a correlated trait, thus creating genomic-enhanced EPDs. This process of integration is recognized as “two-step” or “multi-step”.

assess the degree to which animals are genetically similar increases the power of predicting an animal’s true genetic merit. Traditionally, genetic evaluations account for the relationship between individuals with standardized values (i.e., full-sibs share 50% of the same genes). However, the reality is that not every animal represents the average relationship and a degree of generality is introduced when we assume they do. Single-step excels by using the Marker Effects Model to more accurately describe the proportion of inherited genes each individual received from their parentals. Reducing bias remains a key concept for effective genetic improvement from the early stages of reporting data to the final stages of executing a genetic evaluation and providing producers with genomic-enhanced EPDs.

The historical steps for genetic improvement shouldn’t be considered as unfathomable or a foreign concept, but progress toward better benchmarking the aggregate breeding value of animals. The very essence of genetic improvement is driven by the need to improve the accuracy of genetic predictions in breeding stock. In August of 2018, the American Gelbvieh Association made a progressive step to meet modern industry demands by working with International Genetic Solutions (IGS) to move to the more advanced single-step prediction methodologies using ‘BOLT’ software. For the past year, the AGA has now been providing members and the greater industry with this unprecedented means of genetic improvement. Compared to the previous Cornell software, BOLT has improved EPD correlations, improved EPD accuracies from an approximate calculation to a direct calculation, collected more information from genomic markers via the Marker Effects Model, and equipped breeders with the one of the finest tools in the beef business. GW junior connection

Opportunity for Junior Involvement By Colton Ivers

T

he American Junior Gelbvieh Association (AGJA) has many opportunities to offer its members. The first to come to mind is the Junior Classic. While this is the largest and most heavily attended event, it is not the only one available to junior members. Aside from our Junior Classic, there are typically two regional shows in the beginning of summer. These events can be a fun way to get cattle ready for Junior Classic, as well as to practice for some of the contests. There are Gelbvieh Junior shows all across the country, but a few that come to mind – aside from Junior Classic – are the American Royal, the North American International Livestock Exhibition, and the National Western Stock Show.

I have also had the privilege of serving on the AGJA Board of Directors, which has allowed me to be more hands-on in the industry. I have been able to learn more about the inner workings of the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA). Last year I attended the AGA National Convention in Nashville, Tennessee. It was a great chance to visit with the adult association members and share the importance of the junior association. We were fortunate enough to tour the University of Tennessee’s bull test facility and had multiple industry professionals as guest speakers. The 49th Annual National Convention will be held December 4-6, 2019, in Billings, Montana. Register by October 31, 2019, to receive early pricing. More information about the conference is available at Gelbvieh.org. I hope to see you all in Billings! D

Another option available to juniors to become involved in the breed is through an event that occurs every two years called The Summit. The AGJA teams up with multiple other breed associations to host a youth leadership conference. I attended my first Summit conference in 2018 and learned valuable networking skills and industry knowledge. I strongly encourage those in the senior age division to watch for updates on the 2020 conference and sign up! The 2020 Summit will be held in Washington D.C on July 30-August 2, 2020.

Preparing for AI and Embryo Transfer Work By Taylor Buckley

“O

nce in a while you might get a great one”. Those are often repeated words spoken by any seedstock producer who knows the true difficulty of getting genetics to tie in perfectly with a balanced, superior look. And if a breeder is lucky enough to have a few barn burners in the herd, the next question is how do they replicate the achievement. Thankfully, through advancing technology in the world of genomics and the ever-increasing adoption of artificial insemination and embryo transfer, superior genetics are more widely obtainable. Semen collection in the cattle industry dates back to the early 1950s, where it was highly used in dairy cattle. The process of collecting semen from select sires has allowed us to use those genetics on more cows thus having a higher influence of those genetics throughout the herd and sometimes the breed. And just like a good bull, we also have those females who rise to the top of our keep list. The use of embryo transfer technology has been in the beef industry since the early 1970s and is proven to be a beneficial tool as well. Just like with AI, the idea is to produce several more offspring from this female than what can be produced naturally. Because AI sires and donor dams have the potential to genetically impact a larger portion of the Gelbvieh and Balancer® population, the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) places stricter guidelines on these animals. With that said, the AGA encourages members to make sure AI sires and donor dams meet AGA’s requirements for registering ET and AI progeny before artificial insemination or embryo transfer work ever begins. AI sires and donor dams must have Genomic Option 1 - GGP-HD test results on file and tested for AGA’s four monitored genetic conditions (OS, NH, AM, DD), which can be accomplished by ordering the addon conditions panel. All AI sires and donor dams also must be parent verified by DNA to their sire and dam. Before collecting semen or embryos for the first time, please collect a DNA sample on all new AI sires and donor

26 | OCTOBER 2019

dams and submit to DNA testing. In fact, the AGA encourages members to collect DNA samples on all potential AI sires or donors dams and perform parent verification to the animal’s parents as one of the first steps toward elite status. This ensures that the parent verification piece is already in place before additional time and money has been spent on semen collection or embryo flushes. Please visit the AGA Online Registry Service to view the status of any AI sire or donor dam. The top of an animal’s Animal Detail Screen will read Verified AI Permit or Verified Donor Dam if the AI sire or donor dam has met the requirements. Please don’t hesitate to call the AGA office at 303-4652333 with any questions regarding the status of an AI sire or donor dam. D

DNA REQUIREMENTS TO REGISTER CALVES: AI Sires and Donor Dams: Genomic Option 1 (GGP HD) – $85.00 plus the All Conditions Panel, which is $30.00 as a stand-alone test, or $25.00 add-on to the genomic test. This high-density panel results in genomicenhanced EPDs (GE-EPDs) and includes parentage markers. This test is for highly used for sires and dams in the population and is required for AI sires and donor dams. DNA profiles, which are the result of genomic testing, provide additional information about the genetic merit of a DNA tested animal and increases the accuracy of EPDs. The conditions panel includes testing for OS, AM, NH, DD, Tenderness, and diluter. Natural Service Sires (herd bulls or clean-up sires): Genomic Option 2 (GGP LD) – $46.00: This low-density panel includes markers and parent verification if parents are on file with parentage markers with the AGA. This panel is generally used on registered sale animals and is required for all walking sires of January 2016 and later born registered calves.

STATISTICAL OVERVIEW DNA STATS:

DNA SAMPLE TYPE:

Over the past several years, American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) members have embraced DNA testing and have provided a mountain of genetic information to the AGA registry. In turn, the AGA is better able to predict the genetic merit of registered Gelbvieh and Balancer® cattle. The AGA commends its members for stepping up and embracing the technology to provide their customers with the most reliable genetic prediction possible.

AGA members started utilizing tissue sampling units (TSU) in early 2017 and their popularity among breeders has increased considerably since then. TSUs are the preferred method of DNA sample collection per recommendation of GeneSeek. This preference is due to the sample type’s low failure rate, the speed of which a sample can be collected chute-side and ease and speed of handling at the lab. However, the lab still accepts blood and hair card samples.

PEAK MONTHS FOR DNA TESTING: Wondering when to submit DNA samples to miss the months when the lab is the busiest? Here were the busiest months for AGA DNA testing in 2018: 1. January 2. December 3. September

In 2018 there were 8,188 total samples submitted. 3,953 samples have been submitted from January to September 2019.

TEST REQUESTS IN 2019: Genomic Option 1 (GGP HD): 225 tests submitted Genomic Option 2 (GGP LD): 1,861 tests submitted Stand-Alone Parentage: 3,198 tests submitted Coat Color: 2,112 tests submitted The tally above spans from January 1 to September 15, 2019. So far, 340 members have submitted DNA testing in 2019, with 287 of those submitting samples for genomic testing. DNA profiles, the result of GGP HD, GGP LD or GGP uLD testing, provide additional information about the genetic merit of a DNA tested animal and increase the accuracy of EPDs, which are called Genomic-Enhanced EPDs (GE-EPDs). Enabling technologies such as BOLT software allow for even faster genetic progress with more accurate EPDs earlier in an animal’s life.
