GW FROM THE CORNER OFFICE

Getting Back Out There by Megan Slater

A

fter a long year of several events getting canceled, postponed, or moved to an online format, it was an exciting summer getting to finally be able to attend several in-person meetings once again. Although I already knew nothing could replace live events, I didn’t realize just how much I had missed the face-to-face interaction and true benefit of getting to experience those events once again in person. Whether it be at the Beef Improvement Federation Symposium or the Cattle Industry Convention and NCBA Trade Show, the excitement of being with so many like-minded people there with one goal: improve the beef industry, is truly irreplaceable. With so many things keeping us busy these days, it is easy to just stay focused on what we have going on or getting wrapped-up in the day-to-day of the business. However, taking the time to get out of the office or off the ranch and out into the industry can be extremely valuable. Attending industry events and being involved with various organizations such as local, state, or national cattlemen’s associations, breed improvement organizations, beef councils, breed associations, etc. holds several benefits. One of those benefits is keeping up with current and upcoming issues and how they may have an impact on your operation. These events can provide an opportunity to gain knowledge not only on local and regulatory issues, but also emerging technology and industry practices. Whether from a cattlemen’s college or symposium-type event or even just networking in the halls. Gaining knowledge is always something that can help us better ourselves and our businesses. Many of these organizations mentioned above, including the American Gelbvieh Association, depend on grass-roots efforts to choose the direction of the association and lead the organization into the future.

6 | OCTOBER 2021

Being involved through participation in committees, attending meetings, or even participating in a board election is vital to the growth of the organization. The AGA National Convention is a great place to get the most out of your AGA membership by exercising your right to choose the leaders of our organization and through the opportunity to voice your opinion regarding the association’s future direction. This year’s convention will also have several educational and networking opportunities to get know Gelbvieh breeders, past and present, from all over the country. Networking is one of the biggest benefits to being out at events. Meeting producers and industry professionals from all over the country, with different backgrounds and knowledge to share, can in and of itself be worth going to these events. Not only can a lot come out of the conversations and fellowship gained but getting your name and your operation’s name, and even the breed, out in front of people can really pay off. You never know who may be looking to buy their next Gelbvieh or Balancer® bull and remember your name from a lasting conversation had at an event. Networking and getting out to industry events is a way to market your business and get more people familiar with what you have to offer. The AGA is excited and hopeful to be able to host our 2021 AGA National Convention and 50th Anniversary Celebration in person. The event is scheduled for December 8-10, 2021, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. I know we are all ready to once again be back together to celebrate this large milestone in AGA’s history and plan for what’s next in AGA’s bright future. We hope to see you there. F

GW VIEW FROM THE BOARD

The Oklahoma Double Header by Dan McCarty, AGA President

I

have said many times in these articles during my term that the absolute best part of being involved with the Gelbvieh breed and the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) is the people. It’s one thing to breed cattle that make an impact on the breed and the industry, but to me, it’s even more rewarding to develop friendships and business partnerships that last a lifetime, all because of a common interest in great cattle. I will admit, several years ago when the AGA made the decision to hold the annual convention separate from the National Western Stock Show, my first thought was, “Great, another meeting to have to travel to and attend.” However, after attending the majority of the “stand-alone” conventions, I am convinced it was the right decision. Holding our annual convention as a stand-alone event has enabled us, as breeders and members of the AGA, more time to have quality discussion on issues that impact the industry, the organization, and the breed, as well as more time and flexibility to have engaging conservation with fellow breeders and Gelbvieh enthusiasts. Nobody is in a hurry to get their tie-outs made before dark, grab a shovel to clean up a mess, or fill a bucket of water. Several past attendees have shared with me that they have observed that the camaraderie amongst breeders has certainly improved since we began to gather once a year without cattle and chores to worry about. I think this is evident during evening activities when entire rooms are filled with Gelbvieh breeders. There are many reasons to take the time to attend convention. Membership involvement is what keeps an organization thriving and healthy. The annual convention is your opportunity to participate in the committee process and help shape the work of each committee for the year ahead.

8 | OCTOBER 2021

Additionally, attending the annual convention is a great way to get to know board of director candidates and cast your vote. I encourage you to take time and visit with the candidates, especially if they are someone you don’t know. Share your concerns and ideas and develop relationships as these breeders may soon be making decisions that impact your business. There are plenty of educational opportunities at annual convention, as well. Various educational sessions culminate with the Cattlemen’s Profit Roundup, where attendees can hear from industry leaders and experts on emerging issues. One of the highlights at this year’s convention will be the introduction of the new five-year strategic plan. Association staff and the board of directors have put a tremendous amount of thought, discussion, and work into completing this plan in time to share it with everyone during the 50th anniversary celebration. I encourage you to make plans to join us in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, this December. I’d also encourage you to make a call and invite or bring along one of your customers. The future of the AGA relies not only on its members, but its stakeholders, as well. It is important that we hear the concerns and opportunities of our customers and commercial partners as we set the course for the next 50 years. We are all in this together and our success is directly dependent on their success. This year’s annual convention is sure to be one to remember as we celebrate the golden anniversary of the AGA, right where it all began in the heart of Oklahoma. We will wrap up just in time to get back home, celebrate Christmas and head back to OKC, where I predict we will have a record-breaking national show and sale just a few weeks later. F

GW INFORMATION EXCHANGE Preparing for a Busy DNA Testing Season As we gear up for another busy DNA testing season, it is important to remember these key points when ordering tests: •

DNA tests should be ordered via the AGA Online Registry Service PRIOR to DNA samples being sent to Neogen laboratory. If samples are sent to the lab without first being ordered online or without proper paperwork, results will take longer to receive and the samples may not be properly processed.

Once “place requests” is clicked on the DNA ordering screen, click the PDF icon next to View/ Print AGA DNA Testing Form. Please send the completed DNA testing form along with the samples to Neogen at the address listed on the top right of the testing form. Samples should be sent in a timely manner after the order is placed online.

Records should be kept for all DNA samples that are collected. A simple list tying animal registration number and sample barcode should be kept even after the samples have arrived at the lab. If no records are kept and a problem arises with sample identification, a new sample may need to be pulled before results can be obtained on those animals.

To avoid samples getting lost or damaged during shipment, members are encouraged to send samples in a padded envelope or box. Additionally, obtaining a tracking number on the sample shipment can help members know their samples have arrived at the lab.

DNA testing turnaround time is 4-6 weeks once the samples and completed DNA testing form have arrived at the lab. As we look ahead to another busy DNA testing season, don’t wait to test sale animals! Please be sure to give yourself plenty of time to order testing supplies, collect samples, create the DNA order on the AGA Online Registry Service, and mail samples to the lab.

GW OVER THE FENCE

Over the Fence with the Louthan Family by Laura Handke

F

or Idalia, Colorado, cattle ranchers, Tucker and Andrea Louthan, the greatest blessing of ranching is being able to continue the legacy through their children.

The Louthans also find value in the long-term quality and doability of the Balancer bulls they run, citing their excellent fertility.

“I live on this farm and ranch that I grew up on; this is also the ranch that my mom grew up on, and Tucker and I are raising our kids, who are the fifth-generation, here,” Andrea says. “Our kids get to roam free, and I just can’t think of a better way to raise children.”

“We have big pastures out here and typically run 25 to 30 cows per bull…we have to be confident that these bulls can go out there and do their job. And we are. We don’t have foot problems and these (Balancer) bulls stay in the herd for a long time, four or five years, sometimes longer, and we very seldom have a bull that doesn’t test good – we don’t ever have a huge open rate when we preg check. These Balancer bulls just go do their job, get things covered and put good framed, easy fleshing calves on the ground,” Tucker says, noting the uniformity of their calf-crop from the time they hit the ground through harvest.

The Louthans run a commercial cow-calf operation, grazing calves through the summer, backgrounding and selling in the fall, on video. “We spring calve, starting around March 15. One of the focuses of our ranch is keeping our calving window tight – usually within 60 days, if we can,” Tucker says. The Louthans graze calves between five different pastures, sell on video in mid-July and wean in the first half of October. After weaning, the operation backgrounds for a minimum of 45 days to get calves on feed and growing before they are shipped. “We feel like we’re doing something right because the same buyers bid on our cattle every year. It makes us proud to have the same buyers wanting our calves yearafter-year because they know that they will grow good in the feedyard,” says Tucker. “And it helps that we have the numbers that we do, so we can provide a good selection of matched calves to make truckloads.”

The Genetics Behind the Pounds Tucker says that their fifth-generation operation is in the business of selling pounds, so when he and Andrea pick out bulls, they’re looking for both growth and performance. And because the operation also saves back replacement heifers, there’s also an emphasis on maternal performance. “For our situation, we really like raising our own cattle,” Tucker says. “We’re always making sure that we’re picking bulls that put as many pounds as possible on our calves, but we also want to make sure that we’re making good replacement heifers. The Balancer® bulls add growth and performance on our calves and adding that Gelbvieh for hybrid vigor makes a good cross on our Angus-based cow herd.”

12 | OCTOBER 2021

The Balancer bulls the Louthans run also produce good replacement heifers that mature into profitable, well-doing cows. Idalia is in the high desert country of northern Colorado where rains are usually few and far between. The tough environment necessitates tough, efficient cattle that make the most of every nutrient consumed. “The fall is really when the rubber meets the road for a lot of cows in our herd. You can see which cows are performing and which ones aren’t, pretty quickly. In this part of the country, cows have to be able to go out and take care of themselves, raise a good calf and still breed back,” Tucker says. “We keep our calving seasons tight, so the cows sort themselves and what we’re left with is really good cows that can do a lot with a little.”

Stewardship and Animal Husbandry Make Quality While Louthan says that using individual cow performance as the keep-cull indicator is a management practice that keeps the best of the best in the herd, animal husbandry is a management practice the operation heavily invests in – from docility to beef quality assurance. “We just don’t want a bunch of wild cows running around. It’s important for us to have cattle that we can trust,” Andrea says.

OVER THE FENCE GW

Tucker adds that the lowstress handling techniques used on the ranch, along with the inherent docility of the Gelbvieh and Balancer breed keeps their cattle easy to handle. The operation emphasizes minimal noise, using horses to manage moves and sorting. And like many operations, a strong vaccination program is the backbone of their herd health. “We give a 7-way (shot) right after they’re born, so that they start building that immunity right away,” Tucker says. “At branding we give them a respiratory vaccine and then pre-condition and give another booster again a few weeks before we wean. We try to give a calf every opportunity we can to fight off whatever the environment throws at them,” says Tucker. “Our goal is always to produce and deliver a big healthy calf to a feedyard. They (feeders) can buy with confidence knowing that calf is going to be healthy and that the end product is going to be good for them and for the consumers.” F

T o d d B i c k e t t, D V M GEORGIA

I am honored to be considered for reelection in my second tenure on the AGA board of directors. For those unfamiliar with me, my wife Alisa and I have operated TJB Gelbvieh since 1991. I have repeated this story many times,

but the best thing I ever received from this breed is my wife. Alisa and I met when I was purchasing my first Gelbvieh females from her cousin Randy Daniel at Partisover Ranch. For that introduction, I will be forever grateful. I was raised on a dairy/beef cattle farm in central Kentucky, where I developed my passion for the industry. I attended the University of Kentucky for my undergraduate education and studied animal science. In 1986, I graduated from Auburn University School of Veterinary Medicine. Hailing from the Bluegrass, I made Georgia my home when I began mixed-practice veterinary medicine, a practice I co-owned for 15 years. My real love in the profession became bovine reproduction, so I left the clinic and began operations as Bickett Genetics, Inc. I have operated a full-service bovine embryo transfer service since that time. While I truly love and admire agriculture, my wonderful family and God are my strong foundation. Alisa is forever full of energy and life. Her vivacious personality is one of God’s greatest blessings, and she is a light to everyone she meets. Besides that, she is an awesome herdsman–when she needs to be! My oldest daughter, Kelsie, graduated from the University of Georgia (UGA) in agricultural communications. She is now married, living in Savannah with her husband, Bo Wilson, and is expecting our first grandchild in October. My youngest daughter, Katelyn, also graduated from UGA with an ag communications major and is working in the Georgia State Senate. I have invested thirty years of time, effort and financing into a breed and industry that have become my life. Understanding and appreciating the value of this breed, I desire to make this breed flourish. If re-elected, I promise to dedicate all that I can to our future success. F

My wife Autumn, two girls Henley and Emery, along with my father Michael and mother Barbi and I, own and operate Butler Creek Farm. We currently run 70 Gelbvieh, Balancer and Angus cows, and emphasize the production of top seedstock for both commercial and registered herds through the use of AI and ET. The opportunities and doors opened by the Gelbvieh breed have meant a lot in my life. My involvement started at a young age by attending my first junior national in 1995 in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. After my first junior show experience, my love for the Gelbvieh breed has continued to grow. As a junior member, I served for six years as a board member, serving as director, vice president and ex-officio. As my college career began, my involvement as a junior board member led me to attend Blackhawk East Junior College and to transfer to Oklahoma State University (OSU). While I attended both colleges, I was a member of the livestock judging team and active in many agricultural student activities. I received my bachelor’s in animal science with a minor in business at OSU. After graduation, I returned home to help my dad with the cattle operation and expand my landscaping business that I started at the age of 15. Should I be elected, my goal will be to better the Gelbvieh breed for the members and to provide our youth with as many opportunities as possible. I feel our biggest challenge as cattlemen in the last decade is the ability for a moderately-sized operation to show a respectable profit. I hope to be able to work with

In my opinion, breed associations are put in place to represent the membership and producers in which they are elected to serve. My goal is to build on the good decisions made by previous members and to make changes that benefit the whole of the association. To close, I would like to thank the previous board members for setting an example of leadership. I would appreciate your vote come December in Oklahoma City! Thank you and GO POKES! F

Gary Felger MISSOURI Thank you to the nominating committee for asking me to run for the AGA board of directors. It is an honor to be asked. I grew up on a grain and livestock farm in Indiana and was active in 4-H and FFA. I attended Purdue University, majoring in agricultural economics with additional studies in animal science. Since graduation I have worked in many facets of agriculture including grain, food and feed ingredients, swine genetics, and cattle genomics. Today I am a regional sales manager for Central Life Sciences, working with feed companies, and their beef and dairy producer clients. In 1996, I purchased my first Gelbvieh cows and became a member of the American Gelbvieh Association under our farm name Yellow Dog Gelbvieh. This year we are celebrating our 25th year in the Gelbvieh business. My wife Dawn and I have four adult children that live away but help with the cattle as needed. We use EPDs to assist us in making selection and breeding decisions. We also evaluate animals for structure, mothering ability, etc., recognizing that we cannot successfully breed cattle

d e c e m b e r 8 -10, 2021 strictly by the numbers. The top end of our bulls sell at the B/F Cattle Company sales each spring and fall, and we also sell a few females private treaty. In 2008 I was hired by Merial to work for their new Igenity beef genomics business, which required a move to Missouri. Working in beef genomics for twelve years allowed me to visit hundreds of farms and ranches, and work with some of the top seedstock and commercial producers in the country, providing me with many valuable insights. During this time, I also worked with beef breed associations in the implementation of genomics into their genetic evaluations. Dawn and I were founding members of the Indiana Gelbvieh Association, where I held several offices including president. I also served as president of the Heart of America Gelbvieh Association. With AGA I have served on numerous committees over the years and am currently on the member education committee. The AGA is well positioned, with an excellent staff, and is very strong financially. We need to continue to create demand for Gelbvieh and Balancer genetics by promoting the successes of commercial producers and feeders that benefit from our genetics. We must also continue to keep our breed relevant and competitive by conducting further research and providing AGA members with tools to assist them in breeding better cattle. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions. I would greatly appreciate your vote. F

Gregg Hartman COLORADO Let me reintroduce myself to the membership. I am a third generation farmer rancher in Pueblo, Colorado. I reside on the family farm that lies in the Arkansas River Basin. This area is known for its many vegetable farms, and its most recent development of the Pueblo Chili.

Our operation was mostly row crops, but upon returning home from college, I convinced my folks we needed to diversify more so we started our sod farm which we continue to operate to this day. The operation not only included the farm and crops, but we also had a feedlot facility and a registered Angus herd. After graduating from Colorado State University, I used my degree in agricultural business by teaching ag classes at Colorado State University Pueblo and coached their livestock judging team, which won many awards across the country. We all make long lasting friendships while in college, and one of those was in need of a place to run cows which he had developed during college. Those females were the start of a partnership and the foundation of ProHart Seed Stock, Inc. Those females joined forces of two fraternity brothers, Bob Prosser and Gregg Hartman, thus the name ProHart. After a few years and starting of families, the partnership split because Mr. Prosser now had a ranch to run his own females. How lucky was I that he introduced me to the Gelbvieh breed. The phenomenal females stayed in the herd and eventually replaced the Angus side of the operation. We have been members of the American Gelbvieh Association since 1986. I have been an active member on the local, state and national level for both Cattlemens and American Gelbvieh Association. I helped co-host the Junior Classic when it was held in Pueblo, Colorado. I served on the American Gelbvieh Board of Directors from 1992-1998. During that time, I had the privilege of serving on the executive board as secretary and treasurer. During my term, we secured a new office site, hired two executive directors, and saw the breed and membership grow in numbers and popularity. I will always cherish those times serving with such outstanding leaders and business men and women, and I benefited learning so many life experiences from those great men and women. At that time, I was the youngest board member and brought enthusiasm, new ideas and an energetic approach to the issues we had to deal with at that time in Gelbvieh history. I hope that I could continue with those GELBVIEH WORLD |

2 0 21 A G A N at i o n a l C o n v e n t i o n traits and bring along the wisdom from so many other breeders that I served with and have had the privilege meeting over the years. I wish my fellow candidates the best of luck, but if I am elected, I will always be available to listen to members’ concerns and ideas of how we can further this great breed as a vital genetic piece in the beef business. Thank you for your consideration for a position on the next Gelbvieh board of directors. F

H4 Ranch operation. Also, during my retirement I have been involved in starting the Pacific Northwest Gelbvieh Association that covers Oregon, Washington, Northern California and Idaho. At the same time, I also helped get a regional Gelbvieh show started at the Oregon State Fair. In 2016, I was honored with the AGA Member of the Year and have served one year on the awards committee and two years on the member education committee. I have served as the chairman of The Rockies to the Pacific Female Online Gelbvieh Sale for the past two years, which is a joint effort of the Pacific Northwest Gelbvieh Association and the Montana Gelbvieh Association. I would be honored to serve as a board member for the AGA which represents many outstanding individuals and help to keep it growing. F

I am honored and excited to accept the nomination for the American Gelbvieh Association board of directors. I learned about the Gelbvieh breed when I had my Agriculture 1 students give presentations on breeds of livestock, as I was an agriculture science and technology instructor at Days Creek High School in Days Creek, Oregon, for 38 years. I took this job right out of Oregon State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in agricultural education. I’ve always had livestock and a small farming operation over the years that I taught. After marrying my wife, Shawn, in 1987, we looked for a purebred breed of cattle that we could raise and promote. We selected the Gelbvieh breed. We purchased our first Gelbvieh females in 1989 and that was the start of our commitment of developing the best Gelbvieh cattle that we could. After our daughters, Emily and Brooke, were born, they joined the operation; Emily is our cattle girl and Brooke is our sheep girl. They both have joined in the passion of producing high quality Gelbvieh cattle. We market our cattle under the ranch name of H4 Ranch. Most of the cattle are sold private treaty from our present herd of 40 females. After my retirement in 2011, I have been the full-time ranch manager, ranch hand, and “master feeder” in the

It is an honor to be nominated to serve a second term for the AGA board of directors. I was first introduced to Gelbvieh cattle in 1997, when I was hired as the AGA director of communications and Gelbvieh World editor. A job that I thought would be a four-year gig turned into nearly 12 years and a love for the cattle and the people that didn’t end when I left AGA in 2009. Together with my parents (Marvin and Mae), my sisters (Julie and LeAnn), niece (Jayden) and nephews (Carl and Clayton), we run 160 head of commercial and registered Gelbvieh and Balancer® cattle in southwestern South Dakota. Our registered cattle are marketed under CJ&L Livestock and we will host our 8th annual bull sale this December. We have also sold cattle through the Black Hills Stock Show in Rapid City for the past 21 years.

d e c e m b e r 8 -10, 2021 The people that raise Gelbvieh cattle are passionate about breeding cattle that excel regardless of the environment they run in. I was so lucky to meet and visit with many Gelbvieh breeders that shared their expertise and wisdom. My day-job for nearly 30 years has been ag communications and marketing. Since I departed AGA, I have been fortunate to work for two of the top agricultural advertising agencies in the country. As the AGA board of directors works through its five-year strategic plan to move the association forward, I can bring expertise in building a brand strategy and messaging. I am open-minded, with no hidden agendas and can truly look at both sides of an issue before making

a decision. The role of a breed association continues to evolve with new technologies and services in the beef industry, so we have to continue evaluating how we serve our membership. I am an advocate for making sure our programs and services serve our full membership, regardless of size. As breeders we can’t expect the staff to sell our cattle for us, but as an association we can provide the tools and guidance to help members do a better job promoting and selling their own cattle. I would appreciate your vote and hope to see many of you at the AGA National Convention in Oklahoma City. F

Building a Brand by Laura Handke

W

hen you have something to sell, there’s nothing more important than brand recognition. As cattle producers, we all want our brand to resonate with our customers to provide a sense of pride and integrity. But how do we get there? Marketing is hard and building brand awareness is even harder. Rachel Cutrer, owner of Ranch House Designs, shared with this year’s Beef Improvement Federation Symposium guests that no matter where you start from – a 100-year-old brand or a new identity – building and maintaining a brand is a lot like a set of working pens. “You probably fall into one of three categories: You may have an old set of working pens that have been on the property since you inherited it, maybe your great grandpa built those pens. They are working, but they may not be able to do everything you need them to. Or, maybe you bought a piece of property and it came with a set of pens already on it. You didn’t have any say in the design and you’re figuring out which gates work and which ones don’t. And, finally, maybe you’re fortunate enough to be able to build your own set of pens from scratch. Design them the way you want and make them work for what you want to do. And maybe instead of pens we’re talking about a brand,” she says. A brand holds value. It is the representation of what you produce, how you produce it, and your commitment to your customers. Cutrer says that when she begins a new conversation with a client about branding, there are a series of steps that she uses to lead the creation of the brand. The first step is always brand focus. “Generally, there’s two types of brand focus. The first being a people-driven brand,” she says of the customerfirst branding model. “The product-driven brand would be exactly the opposite, and in the cattle business, that would probably mean focusing only on the attributes of your cattle. Our goal, as producers, should always be to bring a little bit of both to a brand.” Step number two looks at the different ways to identify and then target a group of people that care about what your brand stands for. To do this, Cutrer leads clients through a persona building activity to help them

hone-in and develop personas for the different sectors of their business. “You actually mark it down and create a semifictitious representation of your ideal customer,” she says. “So for example, a persona might be ‘Jim,’ and ‘Jim’ is coming into your feedstore every Saturday and buying a couple bags of feed to take home to his ranch. He’s going to buy a few small items, but he’s going to do it regularly.” Next, identify age, interest, income, and any other identifying characteristics to help further pinpoint the persona. All of this information plays an important role not only in defining who the customer is but in defining and building a strategy around how to reach this customer. Once your focus and customer base is defined, step three looks at crafting your story to share the message that connects with your brand’s focus and customer. “You’re creating a message that’s going to connect with that customer you just personified. So, what are the top three messages that you would want someone to think about when they think about your business,” she asks. A brand’s story isn’t just about the words on the website or marketing collateral. Photos and graphics are the front-line storytellers for any website, brochure, or catalog. Think about the last piece of literature you consumed, whether written or digital. Do you gravitate toward copy or graphics? Arguably, time is our most precious commodity, so if a graphic or photo can do the job of 500 words, most of us are inclined to let it. The four most important elements of brand design are color, slogan, logo, photography and, most importantly, how you marry those four elements together to visually tell your story. The final step is choosing the most effective vehicle to deliver the culmination of the other three steps. How will you “spread the word” about your brand and the services and products it represents? “To me, this is where marketing and brand building become fun. This is where you can really get your message out there and get your customers to interact with you,” Cutrer says. F

2022 Cattle Market Outlook by Laura Handke

R

ebounding from the logistical hurdles of the pandemic, beef cattle prices are expected to climb through 2022. That was the message from CattleFax CEO, Randy Blach, at the 2021 Cattle Industry Convention and NCBA Trade Show in Nashville, Tennessee, in August.

head over the next few years,” Blach said. “We’re going to see feeder cattle and calf supply decline by around a million head during this contraction phase.”

“Beef prices are near record high and consumer and wholesale beef demand are both at 30-year highs as the U.S. and global economy recovers,” Blach shared. “Drought does remain a significant concern with weather threatening pasture conditions in the Northern Plains and West. Strong demand, combined with higher cattle prices, signal an optimistic future for the beef industry.”

The session also reported that consumer demand for beef, both in the U.S. and abroad, remained strong in 2021, despite retail price increases and supply challenges. Good reported that domestic demand was on-track to outpace 1988, with the trend for both domestic and export consumption expected to carry into 2022.

Kevin Good, CattleFax vice president of industry relations and analysis, said that the most recent cattle cycle reported inventories at 94.8 million head still in the system due to the backlog in processing COVID-19 created. However, by January 1, 2022, the beef cow herd is expected to decline 400,000 head, a fact Blach provided context to. “BEEF PRICES ARE NEAR RECORD HIGH AND CONSUMER AND WHOLESALE BEEF DEMAND ARE BOTH AT 30YEAR HIGHS AS THE U.S. AND GLOBAL ECONOMY RECOVERS.”  RANDY BLACH, CATTLEFAX CEO

Good added that prices would also be fueled by plans for new packing plants and expansions that would add an additional 25,000 head per week of slaughter capacity.

Good also shared that export demand, fueled by the global demand for protein and a tightened global protein supply, has increased with the U.S. seeing record beef exports for the months of June and July. “The tightening of global protein supplies will support stronger U.S. red meat exports in 2022. U.S. beef exports are expected to grow 15 percent in 2021 and another five percent in 2022,” Good said. One sector that the beef industry will see reduced demand from is wholesale. “Expect softer wholesale demand in 2022,” Good said, “Retailers and restaurants are going to continue to adjust their prices to reflect their higher costs. We can expect to see retail beef prices increase to $6.85/lb in 2022.

Blach told attendees that while the cattle market is still dealing with an over-supply of market-ready cattle, today, that influence will be short-lived as three years of herd liquidation catches up with the industry.

Strong commodity prices will likely damper the gains seen from a reduced cattle inventory and strong demand, however. Spot prices for soybeans are expected to be $13 to $16 per bushel for the remainder of the next 18 months, with corn prices trading between $4.75 and $6.25 per bushel.

“We are going to see reduced feedyard placements, and as this occurs, we’ll see the value of calves, feeder cattle and fed cattle increase several hundred dollars per

Hay supply will also factor into the drought-related challenges of the West and Northern Plains regions with supplies being tight into 2022. F

JUNIOR CONNECTION GW

Making Connections at Convention

by Cody Forbes

“H

ave you ever flown before?” “Were you nervous?” These seemed to be common questions I got as I prepared to make my way to Billings, Montana, for the 49th Annual American Gelbvieh Association National Convention. For me the answers were “no” and “yes.” I was nervous. My biggest fear was getting through the Denver airport without getting lost and making it to my next flight on time. Luckily, things were easier than anticipated and I made my flight with plenty of time to spare. When I arrived in Billings, I was greeted by some of the nicest people and was able to get to the hotel before the afternoon meetings took place. I was extremely excited to take part in the annual convention and, more so, to be surrounded by people that share the same love and desire for the Gelbvieh breed as I do. During my time in Billings, along with fellow junior board members, I was able to sit in on numerous conversations that pertained to the Gelbvieh breed, as well as issues that we as cattlemen face every day within the industry. We had the opportunity to ask questions and engage in great conversation. We were heard. We also had the privilege to listen to speakers that work in different sectors of the industry and learn more about the research they have found and how it has made a positive or negative impact on the industry throughout the years. We heard from several committees within the association such as the sale, show and finance committees. The junior board presented their annual budget to the adult board for approval and discussed their goals for the upcoming year. We even got to join the adults in their tour of Origen, World West Sire Service and Midland Bull Test where we saw Gelbvieh cattle that data was being collected on. The week was chock-full of useful

information, and I am extremely thankful that I was able to take part in it. We were set to take it back to where it all began in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, in 2020 for the 50th anniversary but were forced to transition to a virtual convention due to restrictions surrounding COVID-19. Things are looking better in 2021 and I would like to take this opportunity to invite you all to the 2021 AGA National Convention and 50th Anniversary Celebration taking place in downtown Oklahoma City, December 8-10. Whether you have attended numerous conventions in the past or this will be your first time attending (or flying), I encourage you to consider the opportunity to attend. It is a great way to meet and interact with new people and learn more about things you may be interested in. If you are someone who would like to run for the junior board this is a great opportunity for you to come and learn more about what we do and see firsthand the experiences and opportunities that we are provided as junior members. Even if you’re not interested in running for the board, but are a junior in the beef industry, I encourage you to consider attending the convention. The conversations you’ll sit in on, the people you’ll meet, and the experiences you will be provided within this breed are unlike any others. For me, this convention will be bittersweet as another door closes on my junior career with the Gelbvieh Association. I am extremely grateful for the association and the opportunities that it has given me throughout the years, and I am looking forward to seeing all of you in Oklahoma City in December! F

DATA BULLETIN GW

DNA - Setting Expectations and Timelines

by Leoma Wells, Strategic Accounts Manager, NEOGEN Genomics

“M

y advice is to never do tomorrow what you can do today. Procrastination is the thief of time.” ~Charles Dickens Let’s build an example around a bull sale being held on February 24, 2022. If the breeder needs the results by January 15 so they can be printed in their catalog, they should submit their samples for testing no later than November 18. An even more optimal time frame would be sending in samples by November 4, allowing some extra time, especially with the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. Step 5: GGP used in genetic evaluation to produce GEEPDs 1x/week

Step 1: Breeder mails samples to NEOGEN for testing November 18

Step 4: AGA reports DNA results to breeder by January 3

Step 2: Samples enter testing December 2

Step 3: Lab reports results to AGA December 30

With DNA it’s best to start early and give all areas of this wheel extra time cushion and save yourself and others unnecessary stress. Outlined below is each step translated to expected business days and turn around. Step 1 – It is highly encouraged to mail samples in a way where you are supplied with a tracking number, preferably UPS or FedEx. It is worth the $8-$20 to have peace of mind, especially since you have already invested time, energy and expense into collecting the samples. Typical mailing time can vary from 1-10 days depending on shipping method.

Step 2 – As long as your samples arrive with the proper AGA paperwork, they typically go into test within 3-7 business days, depending on sample volume being received at the lab and that varies depending on the time of year. The lab is extremely busy October to March so plan on the seven business days for this step, just to error on the side of caution. Step 3 – DNA is being run on the samples and results are reported electronically to AGA via our Lab Information Management Software (LIMS). Typically, from the time a sample enters testing to when results are reported to the Association is 17-28 days depending on testing selected and current lab testing volume. Step 4 – AGA uploads the results to their database and notifies the breeder. This process and timeline is dependent upon AGA workload but it’s safe to assume three business days with regards to this calendar planning. Step 5 – IGS runs genetic evaluation weekly so depending on when the genomic data is delivered, it may take up to three weeks for an animal to have GE-EPDs appear on their record. Step 1 Mail samples 1 to 10

Step 2 Samples enter testing 3 to 7

Step 3 DNA results reported 17 to 28

Step 4 AGA uploads results 1 to 3

Step 5 IGS runs genetic evaluation 7-21 days

Total = ~69 days

*All estimations are in days, excludes holidays and weekends.

Given the above steps, it could take 4-6 weeks from the time a breeder submits their samples to the lab for them to receive DNA parentage and trait results back from the Association and up to 6-10 weeks for GEEPDs in some cases. Proper planning provides time to re-submit a sample if the initial submission ends in a sample failure. From experience, 1-3% of samples may fail testing, varies by sampling method. If 100 samples are submitted, that means there may be up to three samples that fail. It is worth mentioning, there is not a way to expedite DNA testing or GE-EPDs being produced from the evaluation. The best recommendation for success is to make sure you follow your Association’s DNA instructions closely, gather samples using proper collection techniques and start early. F

REGISTRY TIPS ‘N TRICKS GW

Recording Weaning Weights by Jake W. Renner, M.S.

F

all is officially upon us which means a few things including fewer 100+ degree days and shorter daylight hours. To some, this is the perfect time to sit down and get caught up on the registry with data entry. The American Gelbvieh Association encourages all members to collect as much data as possible on all animals to help increase the accuracy of our EPDs. After logging into your AGA Online Registry Service account, the first thing you’ll want to do is queue the animals for weaning. To view which animals currently have weaning data entered and which do not, go to “View” on the lefthand menu under “My Account.” This will pull up the ‘General Profile Information’ screen. Here, you’ll see two rows of tabs running horizontally across your screen. On the bottom row, furthest to the left is an “All” tab. After clicking this tab, you’ll see every active animal that is currently under your ownership. To the right of each animal’s identification details are columns: Born, Wean, Year, Scan and DNA (Figure 1). If there is a date listed beside an animal within a column, it signifies data has been entered for that measurement on that date. If you believe you recorded weaning data on an animal but do not see a date listed under the Wean column, it’s likely that there were errors in the weaning queue, or the data simply was not entered. To enter weaning data, click on the grey box under the Wean column. If the animal does not have a box next to their name under this column, it means the animal is less than 100 days old. Clicking the box will trigger the animal to be sent to the weaning queue. Once the box is

selected, it will read “Queued.” Once all of your animals are “Queued” you’re ready to enter the weights and dates those animals were weaned. From the work menu on the left side of the screen, select “Work Queues” and “Weaning.” This will open all weaning queues you’ve started. You’ll want to select “Go to Queue” on the next page. You may now begin entering data on the animals to be recorded. Additional information may be provided but please be aware that the weaning date and weight are required. After selecting “Validate,” any animal with an error will show error codes directly to the left of their individual line. Each code is associated with a description that can be found below the queue. Once there is no longer an error within your weaning queue, you may select “Commit.” Validating doesn’t just show you errors that may occur, it also serves like a “save” to allow you to leave and come back to this screen later to complete the entry. To remove animals from the weaning queue that may have been placed by accident or forgotten, simply scroll to the right of the screen and locate the red “x” beside each animal. By clicking the red “x” the animal’s detail line will disappear (Figure 2). If you have any problems adding, or removing, animals from your weaning queue or simply aren’t sure which error is preventing an animal from being submitted, please contact the AGA office by calling 303.465.2333 or email registry@gelbvieh.org.
