Greetings Cattlemen: 2020 was a challenge with Covid to say the least. Now in 2021, terrible cold as I am putting together this catalog. The people in this business are tough and resilient. I can’t put this catalog together without thinking how it has affected some of you. Rippe Gelbvieh has continued to assemble a cow herd that is balanced in ALL traits that are economically important to our customers – commercial cattlemen. At Rippe Gelbvieh, we would like to have the opportunity to put our genetics and crossbreeding program to work on your operation. We have a complete lineup of Balancer and Purebred bulls that have enough genetic variation to compliment your cow herd and allow you to take full advantage of the “free lunch” that heterosis and hybrid vigor offer. Not many places in this business can match the genetic lineup we are offering. It isn’t by chance. We run a large herd and are very aggressive in our AI and ET program along with owning some of the best bulls in the business. From a carcass standpoint, we receive lots of carcass data with Dustin owning Roode Feedlot. We receive individual data back on our calves each year. We ultrasound scan the bulls and the heifers. On the maternal side, we take cow weights in the fall when we wean the calves. We take down an udder score on every cow that calves. It is just standard operating procedure at our place. Joel Cast is in charge of it. I question the people that scream maternal but don’t have udder scores in their bull sale catalog. Why not? It is our hope the information we track is valuable to you when selecting bulls. We understand not every bull fits each operation. Everyone has different goals and needs. Check our website as the sale draws near. We will be posting additional information on the supplement sheet and videos of each bull will be posted. Please don’t be afraid to pick up the phone and call so we can assist you in the needs for your program. Duane & Dustin Rippe

23RD ANNUAL BULL SALE 3
Rippe Gelbvieh Bull Guarantee: •
Our #1 goal is customer satisfaction.
•
Rippe Gelbvieh takes 100% responsibility on every bull purchased from our sale until the bull is delivered to your ranch. If there is any problem with the bull upon delivery or at our place we will cover the cost completely and make sure you are satisfied.
•
If you experience a problem with disposition or structural soundness soon after you receive your purchase, Rippe Gelbvieh will replace the bull with similar quality, take the bull back and offer credit on next year’s sale.
•
If you experience abnormal calving difficulty where the herdsire is at fault we demand that the bull be sold for slaughter and a full refund applied to a replacement bull of the buyer’s choice.
First Season Death and Injury Warranty:
Rippe Gelbvieh has offered to share this cost with their customers. There was a lot of confusion over our old warranty. Our new program will allow us to keep our customers satisfied and allow both parties to be satisfied with everyone sharing in the cost. Coverage/Limitations: The coverage of this warranty is for the first breeding season or for the first 90 days after the bull is turned out, unless other arrangements are made. This warranty is good for death and all loss-of-use injuries. The warranty is void if this is caused by negligence or mistreatment of the bull. Replacement value will be the actual purchase cost of the Rippe Gelbvieh bulls covered minus any salvage value or other compensation received by the customer. Claims: All claims must be reported to Rippe Gelbvieh within 24 hours of discovery and must be examined by a licensed veterinarian. Injured: If the injury is not permanent and can be returned to service, Rippe Gelbvieh will work with you to supply a replacement bull to use, at no cost, until the original bull can be returned to service. If the injury is permanent, Rippe Gelbvieh will supply a bull to finish out the season. At the end of the breeding season the customer can choose to keep the replacement bull as fulfillment of this warranty or return him to Rippe Gelbvieh and receive credit on next year’s sale. The credit will equal the purchase price of the bull minus any salvage value from the original bull. Death: When a Rippe Gelbvieh bull dies between the dates outlined above Rippe Gelbvieh will supply another bull to finish out the breeding season. At the end of the breeding season, the customer can either keep the replacement bull as fulfillment of this warranty or receive credit on next year’s sale. The credit will equal the purchase price of the bull minus any compensation received by an insurance company. Cost: Cost for the death and injury warranty will be 5% of purchase price, due at time of purchase. We feel that this is a reasonable cost where we can all share in the cost of a loss in a bull during the first breeding season. If a customer chooses not to cover their animal against death or injury, they assume all risk associated with the bull once it leaves our place. 4 RIPPE GELBVIEH

EPDs Expected progeny differences. Winter 2020 evaluation provided by the AGA
Homozygous: If an animal is homozygous for polled or black, you will not have a horned or red calf born out of this sire. If an animal is heterozygous, it carries one allele for either horned/polled or red/ black. H Heifer Bulls H This yearH we again decided to denote heifer bulls with the graphic , to aid in your bull selection. If you see a bull with an Rippe Gelbvieh believes it is a heifer bull.
Udder: The first number is suspension and second references teat size. 9 is ideal. It represents very small teat size and very tight udder suspension. 1 represents very large, ballooned shape teat and a very pendulous suspension. Doc = Docility: 1 - The bull is content standing alone. 2- The bull is nervous when standing in a pen alone. 3 – The bull is looking for a hole in the fence when alone. 4 – The bull is looking to chase you out of the pen. Percent Gelbvieh: We rounded every bull to the nearest 1/8 in Gelbvieh percentage.
American Gelbvieh Association Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs) Below is an exhaustive list of the expected progeny differences (EPDs) and index values provided by the AGA along with a definition of each trait that is measured. Since AGA’s release of BOLT-powered EPDs on August 6, 2018, the majority of EPDs are BOLT EPDs, which means that Gelbvieh and Balancer® animals BOLT EPDs can be directly compared with other animals in the registries of other partner breed associations within the International Genetic Solutions (IGS) group. Gelbvieh and Balancer EPDs that are excluded from BOLT include: heifer pregnancy, 30-month pregnancy, and dry matter intake. The $Cow, efficiency profit index, and FPI™ indices are unique to the AGA and are not comparable across breeds. Maternal Traits Calving ease direct (CED): Percent of unassisted births of a bull’s calves when he is used on heifers. A higher number is favorable, meaning better calving ease. This EPD can be vital to a rancher looking to decrease the amount of calves pulled in his herd. Milk (MILK): The genetic ability of a sire’s daughters to produce milk expressed in pounds of weaning weight. Calving ease maternal (CEM): Represented as percent of unassisted births in a sire’s first-calving daughters. A higher number represents more favorable calving ease. This EPD is important to a rancher’s bottom line because it predicts which animals produce daughters with a genetic pre-disposition to calve unassisted as heifers. Heifer pregnancy (HP): Predicts the probability that a bull’s daughters will become pregnant as firstcalf heifers in a regular breeding season, expressed as a percent. A higher value of this EPD is favorable, meaning that a higher percentage of a sire’s daughters get pregnant as first calf heifers compared to other sires in his contemporary group. 30-month pregnancy (Pg30): Predicts the probability that a bull’s daughters will become pregnant and calve at three years of age, given that they calved as first-calf heifers. This EPD is expressed as a percent, again, with a higher number being more favorable meaning a higher percentage of a sire’s daughters will calve at three years of age, given they calved as firstcalf heifers. Stayability (ST): Predicts the genetic difference, in terms of percent probability, that a bull’s daughters will stay productive within a herd to at least six years of age. The stayability EPD is one of the best measures currently available to compare a bull’s ability to produce females with reproductive longevity. Growth Traits Birth weight (BW): Predicts the difference, in pounds, for birth weight of the calf. Weaning weight (WW): Predicts the difference, in pounds, for weaning weight (adjusted to age of dam and a standard 205 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to weaning.
12th and 13th rib. Greater ribeye areas are preferable. Marbling (MB): Predicts the differences in the degree of marbling within the ribeye as expressed in marbling score units. Greater marbling numbers are preferable and are an indicator of higher carcass quality grades. Fat (FT): Differences for fat thickness, in inches, for a carcass over the 12th rib, smaller numbers of fat thickness are preferable as excess fat can be detrimental to yield grade. Efficiency Traits Dry matter intake (DMI): Represents the average daily dry matter intake per day consumed in pounds. A negative, or lesser value, is more favorable. For example, Bull A has a DMI EPD of .15 and Bull B has a DMI EPD of -.20, so the progeny of Bull B consume, on average, .35 pound less dry matter per day than progeny from Bull A. Indexes Total maternal (TM): An index that combines growth and milk information as a prediction of the weaning weight performance of calves from a sire’s daughters. As an index, this value is not reported with an accompanying accuracy. A greater TM value means a mother returns comparatively higher weaning weights on her calves. TM Index = MK EPD + ½ WW EPD. $Cow: Represents the genetic value in dollars of profit of an animal when retained as a replacement female relative to other animals in the herd. A higher number represents more profitable genetics for maternal productivity. $Cow will serve producers in selecting bulls that will sire daughters with stayability and reproductive efficiency as well as other traits that lead to profitability in a production system, such as milk, calving ease, moderate mature weight and the ability of calves to gain. A female’s genetics also influence the performance of her calves in the feedlot and at slaughter, so traits such as feed efficiency and carcass value are also included in $Cow. Efficiency profit index (EPI): An economic selection index developed to aid producers in selecting for more feed efficient cattle that still have acceptable amounts of gain. The EPI provides slight negative pressure on intake, while keeping gain at a constant value. By selecting on this index, producers will be able to find those animals that gain the same amount as their contemporaries while eating less. FPI™: An economic selection index, which stands for feeder profit index, is designed to aid producers in selecting sires whose progeny will perform in the feedlot and are sold on a grade and yield standpoint. Well ranking sires for FPI have higher marbling and carcass weight than their contemporaries. As a terminal index, little emphasis is put on maternal traits such as stayability and calving ease.
Yearling weight (YW): Predicts the expected difference, in pounds, for yearling weight (adjusted to a standard 365 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to yearling. Carcass traits Yield grade (YG): Differences in yield grade score, which is a predictor of percent retail product. Smaller values suggest that progeny will have a better lean to fat ratio. Carcass weight (CW): Differences in pounds of hot carcass weight, adjusted to an industry standard age endpoint. Ribeye area (REA): Differences in ribeye area in inches between the
Dustin’s kids.

How the Genetic Evaluation Impacts Genetic Selection In August 2018, the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) transitioned to a new system for the national cattle evaluation. The AGA is a part of International Genetic Solutions (IGS), which is a collaboration between other beef breed associations. IGS invested in the BOLT software, which brings with it the single-step genetic evaluation, a more streamlined method for incorporating genomic results into expected progeny differences (EPDs).
FPI
EPI 72.84
of progeny with reported data for each trait that would be needed to match the amount accuracy provided by a genomic test. For animals within the IGS multi-breed evaluation the progeny equivalent for calving ease direct (CED) is 15, which means that the inclusion of a genomic test is the equivalent to having calved 15 heifers bred to a particular bull.
This partnership benefits the commercial beef industry by providing EPDs backed by millions of pedigree, performance, and genomic records, which are directly comparable across the partner breeds. Hands down, BOLT technology provides the best and most accurate method for genetic prediction. Below is a sampling of improvements brought on by BOLT: More Informed Genetic Selection Decisions: Purchasing bulls with genomic-enhanced expected progeny differences (GE-EPDs) allows commercial producers to make selection decisions with less risk due to an increase in the accuracy of a non-parent animal’s EPDs. The addition of genomic data to an EPD is comparable to adding another source of information, like progeny or pedigree records. Specifically on lowly heritable traits, such as reproductive traits, genomic data has the potential to greatly increase the accuracy of an EPD prediction and can be demonstrated. While the accuracy value associated with an EPD can be a bit difficult to understand in practical terms, the progeny equivalent table provides information that’s easy to comprehend in the most practical of terms – how many calves worth of data was added? Progeny equivalent values in the table below describe the number
Across Breed Comparison: Because AGA breeders have chosen to collaborate with members of other breed associations to pool their pedigree, performance, and genomic data for a multi-breed NCE, most Gelbvieh and Balancer® animals’ EPDs can be directly comparable with other animals in the registries of other partner breed associations within the IGS group. Gelbvieh and Balancer EPDs that are excluded from direct comparison include: heifer pregnancy, 30-month pregnancy and dry matter intake. The $Cow, efficiency profit index and FPI™ indices are unique to the AGA and are not comparable across breeds.

Therefore, the bulls actual birth weight and weaning weight are not a representation of the bulls genetics. Consequently, we have chosen not to provide this information as it is inaccurate. EPDs do a much better job of showing the genetic value of these bulls.
6 RIPPE GELBVIEH
You will notice there are not many pictures of the bulls in the catalog. This is because we decided to video each and every bull and all the videos are on our website at www.rippegelbvieh.com. We did this because we take great pride in the structure of our bull lineup and this allows buyers to evaluate before they come to our sale. Genetic Defects: We have tested all potential carriers for defects. Any animal that was deemed to be a carrier we took out of the bull pen.
BLACK BALANCER® I am very excited to showcase this set of Black Balancer bulls. The first 7 bulls are from our fall program and we call them Age Advantage Bulls. We have been fortunate to own some of the best black balancer bulls this breed has seen in Watchman and Nevada. Nevada is still breeding cows at 10 years of age. 710E is a bull I think when he is done will rank right up there with those two I mentioned. We are also showcasing bulls out of WCR59. We sold him a few years ago, and it took us a few years to figure out how good he is. This is basically our last set of bulls out of him as we only have 6 units of Semen left in inventory, and the bull is not alive anymore. We also have several new Angus sired Balancer bulls with KG Justified, Sitz Alpine, Capitalist 316, Stevenson Decleration. In addition, there are many ¾ Gelbvieh bulls that I found very interesting. The average Percentile Rank of these bulls are top 24% Calving Ease, Top 33% Weaning weight, to 32% yearling weight, top 13% Feeder Profit Index. Every bull is sire verified and every bull has genomic enhanced EPD’s. We achieve these type of numbers because we cut ones with bad numbers and data - no matter how they look.

BLACK PUREBRED This is the best set of Purebred bulls we have ever raised. The biggest reason is after the first cut we still had close to 40 purebred bulls left. This is the best of the best from our herd. We have several different sire groups to evaluate. They differ on their strengths, but I think they all have genetics for different operations. They are all sire verified and all have genomic enhanced EPD’s. These bulls are ready to go to work on a set of commercial Angus cows to add heterosis and performance. The AVERAGE percentile rank of this pen is top 37% for Calving Ease, top 20% for Weaning weight, top 16% for Yearling weight and top 24% for Feeder Profit Index.

Long, deep, thick, and attractive describe this performance oriented bull. This bull is a true freak from a Performance and carcass standpoint. He ranks in the top 1% of the breed for yearling weight, top 3% for Marbling, and top 1% for Feeder Profit Index. There are only 17 purebred bulls born in the breed this year with an FPI over 90 and this stud is one of them. Maternally, he goes back to the mother of Sam in L643. I think this is a very unique breeding piece.

Very sound, and deep bodied describe this bull who is part of our plan to inject more marbling in the purebred Gelbvieh population. Before the ultrasound he ranked in the top 1% of the breed and then he scanned with over 4.7% IMF. For this breed he is crazy high for marbling. Then you look at the rest of his numbers, he is a heifer bull that is the top 2% for calving ease and top 10% for yearling weight. He is one of 17 purebred bulls born this year with an FPI over 90.

RED BALANCER®
Lot
I am very dedicated to our Red Balancer breeding program. In the past year we have purchased two picks of herds and both times selected a red purebred. This is a really good set of red balancer bulls that can both add performance and maintain calving ease. Red cattle can handle the summer heat better than their black counterparts. I will say that these red cattle in our industry need more performance and I think our red balancer program is situated in a good spot to fix this issue. The average percentile rank of this pen of bulls is top 37% for calving ease, top 20% for weaning weight, top 16% for yearling weight, and top 24% for Feeder Profit Index. This pen of red balancers has as good of numbers as anyone in the industry. We are starting this pen out with 4 Age Advantage fall born bulls.

Wayne Kugel will be selling approximately 11 Fall Bred crossbred heifers. We will have more information on sale day in terms of the exact number and how they are grouped according to how they pregnancy check. The bull was turned out on October 29th, and they should start calving around the 1st of August. These heifer’s dams would have come right from our program and cleaned up with a calving ease balancer bull Wayne bought from us. Wayne worked for Rippe Gelbvieh for 19 years and now helps out when we are in a pinch. They were not bangs vaccinated but did have their pre-breeding shots.

Commercial Heifers
We are offering 72 Commercial Heifers for sale this year – all out of our own herd. There are 55 black and 17 red. Heterosis plays a huge role in cow longevity and all of these heifers are crossbred. They have all passed a pelvic measurement, passed a reproductive tract score, been freeze branded, bangs vaccinated, and developed to be excellent females. All heifers will be kept for free until March 22 and will need to be picked up by the owner unless prior arrangements have been made. We would keep them at our place and AI these heifers if the purchaser would like. The cost for us to AI them is $3/hd/day after March 22 until you pick them up for feed and yardage. In addition, $15/hd to set them up for AI, $15/hd to AI them, and the cost of the semen. We typically AI the very end of April.
