Breeding Guarantee: All bulls have been semen tested and will be fully guaranteed to be capable of settling healthy, sound and fertile cows of breeding age. Bulls selling for $3,000 or more will carry an additional guarantee against injury effecting breeding as declared by a licensed veterinarian; and not injured due to abuse or neglect. This guarantee is for the spring breeding period. The seller will give the purchaser of the bull credit at next year’s sale for one half of the purchase price, minus the salvage value. Seller of the bull must be notified immediately if injury occurs. If any other problems occur, the terms and conditions as stated by the breeding guarantee of the AGA (in the back of this catalog), will be in effect. Any guarantee is between the individual seller and the purchaser. Online bidding: Contact Tom Frey at
(641) 344-5082 or the sale barn at (641) 782-7025. To view only, the sale can be seen on LMAAuctions.com. To be able to bid, click on submit and then contact Tom Frey or the sale barn three (3) days prior to the sale.
Delivery: Any bull bringing over $3500 will be delivered
free of charge up to 200 miles. Bulls sold farther than 200 miles will be delivered to a midway point between buyer and seller, as soon as it is convenient for both parties.
Semen Interest Retained: The sellers are retaining a 50% semen interest in all the bulls in the sale. The buyer is getting full possession and 50% semen interest. If we choose to collect semen we will work with the new owner and schedule the collection around his schedule. We will rarely exercise this option, but with all the new DNA technology we may want to use some of these genetics in the future. Catalog by: Jane Adolph, Mt. Carroll, IL

Bull & Female Sale
Welcome to our 10th Annual Bull and Female Sale!
The Southwest Iowa Gelbvieh and Balancer Group would like to thank all of our customers and everyone else that has shown interest in our cattle over the last nine years and helping us celebrate our 10th Anniversary Sale. We want to thank Tom, Brandon, and Cody Frey and their crew at the Creston Livestock Auction for all the work that they do to help us. We also want to thank Jim, Joe, Clint, and Bonnie for all they do for us at the Werner Feed Efficiency Testing Center. Also thanks to Dan Bradshaw who gets all the bulls fitted for the sale and takes pictures for us…it's not an easy job some days. Finally we want to thank Jane Adolph for her patience and all the help she does in making our sale catalog all come together. Again we thank you all! The bulls in this sale have all been feed efficiency tested, ultra sounded, scrotal measured, semen tested and DNA tested to help you find a bull that will work for you on your farm. There will be some younger bulls in the sale this year. Some have terrific numbers to work as heifer bulls this year and would then mature into top herd sires for yeas to come. Maybe plan a year ahead. The Werner family provide another great service to us in feed efficiency testing all our bulls for how many pounds of feed it takes to put on a pound of beef. If you save your own replacement heifers with bulls with a high feed efficiency score you could save $60 per head a year on your heifers – on 100 heifers that could be a savings of $6,000. Along with testing how the bulls gain, they are carefully fed to keep them sound on their feet and legs. The bulls are vaccinated like Green Tag cattle to stay healthy for you. Thanks again to everyone and we hope to see you on March 15th! — The Southwest Iowa Gelbvieh & Balancer Group
Please bring your catalog with you to the Sale on March 15th!
About the EPDs: The bulls in the Southwest Iowa Gelbvieh & Balancer Sale have
been tested and rated on all the major tests for breeding bulls; including ultrasound for carcass, semen tested, scrotal measured, BVD tested and the new EPDs for weights, milk, carcass, etc. The new EPDs are more accurate through genetic testing, termed “Genomic Enhancement”. This is done by picking out genetic markers in blood samples for individual EPD traits and the degree they influence each trait. In the past EPDs have been calculated from many generations of weigths and growth. The addition of genomic markers for each trait, combining the past accumulated records gives us the more accurate genomic enhanced EPDs.

A top kind of black, homo polled, full blood bull. All these traits are hard to find in a full blood bull and still have good EPDs for daughters’ calving ease of top 35%. Heifer pregnancy top 35% with heifers 30 day pregnant in the top 12% and marbling in the top 5%. This is a really good bull and exceptional for a 100% full blood.

This is a PB94% homo black, homo polled heifer. It keeps getting harder and harder to find purebred heifers. She has excellent growth and maternal EPDs to go along with a top set of intake and carcass EPDs that rank in the top 1% RFI, 2% DMI, 4% YG, 5% FT and 15% REA. The dam of this heifer has a perfect udder, is easy fleshing and very docile. She sells halter broke and has had her first set of pre-breeding shots. Sells open.
Here is a homo black, multi polled, purebred heifer that is a little smaller framed than the other two we have in the sale. She is a nice, quiet heifer with a balanced set of EPDs and should make a nice cow. We sold this heifer’s sister last year in Des Moines at the Iowa Beef Expo. She sells halter broke and has had her first set of pre-breeding shots. Sells open.

EPD Definitions… Listed below are the definitions of American Gelbvieh Association EPDs and the units in which they are published. e EPDs with an asterisk (*) next to the name are available to members only. Maternal traits Calving ease direct (CED): Percent of unassisted births of a bull’s calves when he is used on heifers. A higher number is favorable, meaning better calving ease. is EPD can be vital to a rancher looking to decrease the amount of calves pulled in his herd. Milk (Milk): e genetic ability of a sire’s daughters to produce milk expressed in pounds of weaning weight. Calving ease maternal (CEM): Represented as percent of unassisted births in a sire’s first-calving daughters. A higher number represents more favorable calving ease. is EPD is important to a rancher’s bottom line because it predicts which animals produce daughters with a genetic pre-disposition to calve unassisted as heifers. Heifer pregnancy (HP): Predicts the probability that a bull’s daughters will become pregnant as first-calf heifers in a regular breeding season, expressed as a percent. A higher value of this EPD is favorable, meaning that a higher percentage of a sire’s daughters get pregnant as first calf heifers compared to other sires in his contemporary group. 30-month pregnancy (Pg30): Predicts the probability that a bull’s daughters will become pregnant and calve at three years of age, given that they calved as first-calf heifers. is EPD is expressed as a percent, again, with a higher number being more favorable meaning a higher percentage of a sire’s daughters will calve at three years of age, given they calved as first-calf heifers. Stayability (ST): Predicts the genetic difference, in terms of percent probability, that a bull’s daughters will stay productive within a herd to at least six year of age. e stayability EPD is one of the best measures currently available to compare a bull’s ability to produce females with reproductive longevity.
Efficiency traits Dry matter intake (DMI): Represents the average daily dry matter intake per day consumed in pounds. A negative, or lesser value, is more favorable. For example, Bull A has a DMI EPD of .15 and Bull B has a DMI EPD of -.20, so the progeny of Bull B consume, on average, .35 pound less dry matter per day than progeny from Bull A.
Growth traits Birth weight (BW): Predicts the difference, in pounds, for birth weight of the calf. Weaning weight (WW): Predicts the difference, in pounds, for weaning weight (adjusted to age of dam and a standard 205 days of age). is is an indicator of growth from birth to weaning. Yearling weight (YW): Predicts the expected difference, in pounds, for yearling weight (adjusted to a standard 365 days of age). is is an indicator of growth from birth to yearling. *Mature weight EPD (MW): Predicts the average difference in pounds of mature weight of a sire’s progeny compared to their contemporaries.
$Cow: Represents the genetic value in dollars of profit of an animal when retained as a replacement female relative to other animals in the herd. A higher number represents more profitable genetics for maternal productivity. $Cow will serve producers in selecting bulls that will sire daughters with stayability and reproductive efficiency as well as other traits that lead to profitability in a production system, such as milk, calving ease, moderate mature weight and the ability of calves to gain. A female’s genetics also influence the performance of her calves in the feedlot and at slaughter, so traits such as feed efficiency and carcass value are also included in $Cow.
Carcass traits Yield grade (YG): Differences in yield grade score, which is a predictor of percent retail product. Smaller values suggest that progeny will have a better lean to fat ratio. Carcass weight (CW): Differences in pounds of hot carcass weight, adjusted to an industry standard age endpoint. Ribeye area (REA): Differences in ribeye area in inches between the 12th and 13th rib. Greater ribeye areas are preferable. Marbling (MB): Predicts the differences in the degree of marbling within the ribeye as expressed in marbling score units. Greater marbling numbers are preferable and are an indicator of higher carcass quality grades. Fat (FT): Differences for fat thickness, in inches, for a carcass over the 12th rib, smaller numbers of fat thickness are preferable as excess fat can be detrimental to yield grade.
*Average daily gain (ADG): Difference in average daily gain in pounds based on an animal’s performance during a feed intake test period. *Residual feed intake (RFI): Defined as the difference between an animal’s actual daily feed intake and its predicted daily intake based on growth rate and body size. Animals with a positive RFI value are deemed more inefficient because they consume more than expected while animals with a negative RFI value are considered more efficient because they consume less than expected. Indexes Indexes are tools that allow producers to select for several EPDs at once, making selections more efficient than selecting on one trait at a time. Indexes weigh traits based on their importance to a producer’s bottom line by using a trait’s economic and genetic value. Indexes are a good way to put selection emphasis on traits that are economically relevant. Total maternal (TM): An index that combines growth and milk information as a prediction of the weaning weight performance of calves from a sire’s daughters. As an index, this value is not reported with an accompanying accuracy. A greater TM value means a mother that returns comparatively higher weaning weights on her calves. TM Index = MK EPD + ½ WW EPD.
Efficiency profit index (EPI): An economic selection index developed to aid producers in selecting for more feed efficient cattle that still have acceptable amounts of gain. e EPI provides slight negative pressure on intake, while keeping gain at a constant value. By selecting on this index, producers will be able to find those animals that gain the same amount as their contemporaries while eating less. Feeder profit index (FPI): An economic selection index designed to aid producers in selecting sires whose progeny will perform in the feedlot and are sold on a grade and yield standpoint. Well ranking sires for FPI have higher marbling and carcass weight than their contemporaries. As a terminal index, little emphasis is put on maternal traits such as stayability and calving ease.

The sale veterinarian will assist buyers on health status for specific states and testing for anaplasmosis and blue tongue if this is required for export to Canada. BREEDING GUARANTEE AND DEFINTIONS:
FEMALES: Females are guaranteed to be breeders, with the exception of female calves sold at side of dam, injury or disease occurring after time of sale, gross negligence or willful misconduct on the part of the purchaser, females used in ovum transplant after time of sale, females shown competitively after time of sale, and cows with calf at side. Cows represented as being “safe in calf” will have been examined by a licensed veterinarian and are so guaranteed. They are considered breeders without further guarantee. Females with a “due to calve” date in the remarks columns are considered safe in calf. A bred female is a female known to have been served by a bull either by natural breeding or artificial insemination, but it does not necessarily mean that the female is safe in calf to that service. A pasture-bred female is a female that has been exposed for the time stated, but it does not necessarily mean that this female is sale in calf to that bull. An open heifer is a virgin heifer that has never been exposed to a bull either through natural service or artificial insemination. An open cow is a cow that has not been exposed to a bull either through natural service or artificial insemination since the birth of her last calf. Calves sold off their dams (split pairs) shall carry the full breeding guarantee. MALES: Bulls are guaranteed to be breeders (defined as ability to settle healthy cows by 18 months of age) with the exception of bull calves sold at the side of dam, injury or disease occurring to the animal after time of sale, and gross negligence or willful isconduct on the part of the purchaser. If a female is sold as “safe in calf” to a given sire or sires on a specified date or dates and proves not to be represented, the buyer is entitled to a refund of the purchase price from the seller upon return of the animal to the farm of the seller at the seller’s expense. In the event an animal is claimed to be a nonbreeder, the animal may be returned to the farm of the seller, at the buyer’s expense, if in good physical condition and the return is in compliance with the health requirements of the state where purchased. The seller shall be entitled a six (6) month trial period in which to prove the animal is a breeder, the seller shall, at his option, replace the animal with another of equal value or refund the purchase price. Either option shall be deemed full satisfaction and settlement. Any animal returned will be at the purchaser’s risk. No guarantee is given concerning a pregnant female’s gestation period or calf’s condition. The seller is not responsible for damage caused by foreign bodies after the animal has been sold nor for sickness not apparent at sale time. If a female is sold as
“open” and proves to be with calf at time of sale and examined pregnant within sixty (60) days after sale, the buyer may return the animal to the farm of seller prior to calving for a refund of the full purchase price or for another mutually acceptable adjustment. It shall be the obligation of the seller to bear all expenses incurred for transportation of the animal in question to the farm of the seller. Any adjustment provided herein, if selected, shall absolve the seller from further liability. HORNED/POLLED/SCURRED DEFINITIONS AND GUARANTEES
HORNED: An animal with a horn growth affixed to the skull that has or has not been removed.
POLLED/SCURRED: An animal with rudimentary horn growth that will not develop into a horn. The rudimentary horn growth may or may not become affixed to skull at an older age.
POLLED: An animal with absence of horn growth. (An animal can have scurs and still be genetically polled.) SMOOTH-POLLED: A smooth-polled individual has no scurs and does not develop scurs later in life.
MULTIPLE BLACK: indicates that the animal descends from a multiple generation pedigree of black animals, at a minimum both parents and all four grandparents were black. It does not guarantee that the animal will be homozygous for the black color.
MULTIPLE POLLED: indicates that the animal descends from a multiple generation pedigree of polled/scurred animals, at a minimum both parents and all four grandparents were polled/scurred. It does not guarantee that the animal will be homozygous for the polled trait.

The liability of the seller shall not exceed the amount of the original purchase price and the seller must be notified in writing within 24 months following the date of purchase for this warranty to be enforceable. In the event an animal sold as homozygous black or homozygous polled is determined to be heterozygous for the warranted trait, the seller will make satisfactory replacement or refund the purchase price within a reasonable time. The seller must have the opportunity to inspect the calf in question and, at his cost, blood type or DNA test the calf and its parents and perform such other tests as necessary to confirm that the calf is heterozygous for the trait in question.
