fully guaranteed to be capable of settling healthy, sound and fertile cows of breeding age. Bulls selling for $3,000 or more will carry an additional guarantee against injury effecting breeding as declared by a licensed veterinarian; and not injured due to abuse or neglect. This guarantee is for the spring breeding period. The seller will give the purchaser of the bull credit at next year’s sale for one half of the purchase price, minus the salvage value. Seller of the bull must be notified immediately if injury occurs. If any other problems occur, the terms and conditions as stated by the breeding guarantee of the AGA (in the back of this catalog), will be in effect. Any guarantee is between the individual seller and the purchaser.
The Southwest Iowa Gelbvieh and Balancer Group would like to thank all of our customers and all who have shown interest in our cattle over the last twelve years. You can drive as far as you want and not find better seedstock than we offer. The bulls have all been tested for feed efficiency, ultra-sounded, scrotal measured and semen tested. Bulls have been fed for soundness, longevity and ease of handling from birth to buyer. The bulls have been fed in a feed efficiency program which automatically weighs all the feed consumed and at the time of day. If you choose high efficiency bulls and retain heifers from them, in a few generations (as have been studied and tested by universities and cattle testing stations such as Werner Feed Efficiency Testing Center), you can achieve feed efficient cattle that can save as much as $100 per cow per year in feed costs. On 100 cows that translates to $10,000 saved!

tested and rated on all the major tests for breeding bulls; including ultra-sound for carcass, semen tested, scrotal measured, BVD tested and the new EPDs for weights, milk, carcass, etc. The new EPDs are more accurate through genetic testing, termed “Genomic Enhancement”. This is done by picking out genetic markers in blood samples for individual EPD traits and the degree they influence each trait. In the past EPDs have been calculated from many generations of weigths and growth. The addition of genomic markers for each trait, combining the past accumulated records gives us the more accurate genomic enhanced EPDs.

Martens Gelbvieh is located near Walnut, Iowa where we have lived for the past 34 years. We are a small family operation that raises mostly corn, soybeans, and a few Gelbvieh cattle. Our introduction to Gelbvieh was in 1989 when we purchased our first Gelbvieh bull (the only breed we have ever had ), we joined the American Gelbvieh Association the next year and started breeding up our cows to be purebreds, and we bought a few PBs along the way. We sold a few bulls privately for a few years then in 2010 we got together with a few other Gelbvieh breeders and started The Southwest Iowa Gelbvieh & Balancer Bull Sale which is now in its 13th year. We are currently running about 30 purebred black cows and sell our top bulls and replacement heifers in the sale. We would like to thank all of our past customers and everyone else that has showed interest in our cattle and our sale over the years. We hope to see you on March 18th.
We started our Gelbvieh herd in 1979 when we bought some Gelbvieh cross cows from Cooper Brothers in Oklahoma. We used a purebred bull and also used A.I. semen from fullblood bulls. We have been pushing purebreds ever since. Our family has had as many as 150 pairs. Since I have retired, we have cut way back to be calving 15 to 20 cows a year. We try buying different bloodlines within our bulls and A.I. work. As my grandchildren have grown to love the cattle, we show what we raise and believe in. I myself and my wife, Carol, my son, Ed, and his family and my daughter, Barb, and her family are all involved in raising and showing of our cattle. We are striving to produce high quality cattle in our small herd. We wish each of you good luck in your purchases and hope to see you in the future.

We started working into Gelbvieh in 1983. We AI'd other continental breeds for a few years until we got three quarter bloods. I found Gelbvieh was the breed I liked best all the way through purebreds. They just made a home for themselves and we added Balancers soon after. We've driven from Texas into Canada and from Indiana through Montana looking at bulls. I believe the great breeders we've met and purchased bulls from are a lot like the cattle they raise…honest, hard working and top of the line. I believe there are more differences within a breed than between breeds.
Roy Holste and wife, Nancy, own and operate Triple H Farms. We got started in the late 1980s/early 1990s. I bought my first Gelbvieh cows when Northwest Missouri State College sold their Gelbvieh herd. We run around 60 head of [urebred cows with the goal of making our calves deep, wide and soggy with a lot of carcass merit.
MJBC gelBvieh / MiChael Bauer auBudon, iowa / 712-304-4320 MJBC Gelbvieh was started in 1993 with the purchase of two bulls from the late Frances Bradshaw. We are located in west central Iowa outside the town of Audubon. My family consists of my wife Carrie (an elementary principal) and our children Chris and Ruthie. We run 50 pairs and also raise corn, soybeans, and alfalfa on owned and rented ground. From those two bulls we have bred our herd up to mostly black purebred cows. With the use of AI, ET, and live bull coverage, we have been able to improve our cattle herd. Our goal is to produce cattle that are functional in both the pasture and the feed yard with eye appeal. As one of the original members of the Southwest Iowa Gelbvieh and Balancer Bull & Female Sale, I would like to thank you for your interest in our bulls and heifers and supporting this annual sale.

Consigned by: Rafter R Gelbvieh • Adel, Iowa It is hard for me to express how much I think of the TF928J bull. We purchased his Great Grand Dam from Miller Gelbvieh in Kansas with a Carolina Hero heifer calf at side. TF928J has good length, thickness, and depth of body; all of which improve performance and are traits that produce better calves that weigh more on sale day and bring more per lb. He gained 3.63 pounds a day on the 101 day ADG test. With his 13.7 REA and high number of 18 for calving ease, a Y wt. score of 119 and 25 score for milk he should sire great growing calves and great replacement heifers. Don’t pass him up. You will be glad you took him home.

Consigned by: Rafter R Gelbvieh • Adel, Iowa We have sold a number of high preforming bulls from this blood line. He has a calving ease score of 14 and low birth WT of -0.6 his heifers should calf easily and he is quiet to work with. I am sure that all females he produces will have good milk and great teats and udders. We purchased his Great Grand Dam from the Rupple dispersal. The Great Grand Dam was about a picture perfect cow and had great calves. We apologize that we’ve not been able to find a sire match for this bull, even with genotype. The cows were never off our place and had no other cattle around them. Evidently his dam got together with one of our young bulls that had not been genotyped. I know our cattle and work with them daily and know what ever bull bred her should have had good EPDs. The AGA used the sire breed average to make his registration papers. I guarantee that you will like him.

EPD Definitions… Listed below are the definitions of American Gelbvieh Association EPDs and the units in which they are published. The EPDs with an asterisk (*) next to the name are available to members only. Maternal traits Calving ease direct (CED): Percent of unassisted births of a bull’s calves when he is used on heifers. A higher number is favorable, meaning better calving ease. This EPD can be vital to a rancher looking to decrease the amount of calves pulled in his herd. Milk (Milk): The genetic ability of a sire’s daughters to produce milk expressed in pounds of weaning weight. Calving ease maternal (CEM): Represented as percent of unassisted births in a sire’s first-calving daughters. A higher number represents more favorable calving ease. This EPD is important to a rancher’s bottom line because it predicts which animals produce daughters with a genetic predisposition to calve unassisted as heifers. Heifer pregnancy (HP): Predicts the probability that a bull’s daughters will become pregnant as first-calf heifers in a regular breeding season, expressed as a percent. A higher value of this EPD is favorable, meaning that a higher percentage of a sire’s daughters get pregnant as first calf heifers compared to other sires in his contemporary group. 30-month pregnancy (Pg30): Predicts the probability that a bull’s daughters will become pregnant and calve at three years of age, given that they calved as first-calf heifers. This EPD is expressed as a percent, again, with a higher number being more favorable meaning a higher percentage of a sire’s daughters will calve at three years of age, given they calved as first-calf heifers. Stayability (ST): Predicts the genetic difference, in terms of percent probability, that a bull’s daughters will stay productive within a herd to at least six year of age. The stayability EPD is one of the best measures currently available to compare a bull’s ability to produce females with reproductive longevity. Growth traits Birth weight (BW): Predicts the difference, in pounds, for birth weight of the calf. Weaning weight (WW): Predicts the difference, in pounds, for weaning weight (adjusted to age of dam and a standard 205 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to weaning. Yearling weight (YW): Predicts the expected difference, in pounds, for yearling weight (adjusted to a standard 365 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to yearling. *Mature weight EPD (MW): Predicts the average difference in pounds of mature weight of a sire’s progeny compared to their contemporaries. Carcass traits Yield grade (YG): Differences in yield grade score, which is a predictor of percent retail product. Smaller values suggest that progeny will have a better lean to fat ratio. Carcass weight (CW): Differences in pounds of hot carcass weight, adjusted to an industry standard age endpoint. Ribeye area (REA): Differences in ribeye area in inches between the 12th and 13th rib. Greater ribeye areas are preferable. Marbling (MB): Predicts the differences in the degree of marbling within the ribeye as expressed in marbling score units. Greater marbling numbers are preferable and are an indicator of higher carcass quality grades.
Fat (FT): Differences for fat thickness, in inches, for a carcass over the 12th rib, smaller numbers of fat thickness are preferable as excess fat can be detrimental to yield grade. Efficiency traits Dry matter intake (DMI): Represents the average daily dry matter intake per day consumed in pounds. A negative, or lesser value, is more favorable. For example, Bull A has a DMI EPD of .15 and Bull B has a DMI EPD of -.20, so the progeny of Bull B consume, on average, .35 pound less dry matter per day than progeny from Bull A. *Average daily gain (ADG): Difference in average daily gain in pounds based on an animal’s performance during a feed intake test period. *Residual feed intake (RFI): Defined as the difference between an animal’s actual daily feed intake and its predicted daily intake based on growth rate and body size. Animals with a positive RFI value are deemed more inefficient because they consume more than expected while animals with a negative RFI value are considered more efficient because they consume less than expected. Indexes Indexes are tools that allow producers to select for several EPDs at once, making selections more efficient than selecting on one trait at a time. Indexes weigh traits based on their importance to a producer’s bottom line by using a trait’s economic and genetic value. Indexes are a good way to put selection emphasis on traits that are economically relevant. Total maternal (TM): An index that combines growth and milk information as a prediction of the weaning weight performance of calves from a sire’s daughters. As an index, this value is not reported with an accompanying accuracy. A greater TM value means a mother that returns comparatively higher weaning weights on her calves. TM Index = MK EPD + ½ WW EPD. $Cow: Represents the genetic value in dollars of profit of an animal when retained as a replacement female relative to other animals in the herd. A higher number represents more profitable genetics for maternal productivity. $Cow will serve producers in selecting bulls that will sire daughters with stayability and reproductive efficiency as well as other traits that lead to profitability in a production system, such as milk, calving ease, moderate mature weight and the ability of calves to gain. A female’s genetics also influence the performance of her calves in the feedlot and at slaughter, so traits such as feed efficiency and carcass value are also included in $Cow. Efficiency profit index (EPI): An economic selection index developed to aid producers in selecting for more feed efficient cattle that still have acceptable amounts of gain. The EPI provides slight negative pressure on intake, while keeping gain at a constant value. By selecting on this index, producers will be able to find those animals that gain the same amount as their contemporaries while eating less. Feeder profit index (FPI): An economic selection index designed to aid producers in selecting sires whose progeny will perform in the feedlot and are sold on a grade and yield standpoint. Well ranking sires for FPI have higher marbling and carcass weight than their contemporaries. As a terminal index, little emphasis is put on maternal traits such as stayability and calving ease.
