WILKINSON GELBVIEH RANCH AGA # 7007
Model, CO
Wilkinson Gelbvieh Ranch is located in the arid prairie of SE Colo., between Trini-
dad and LaJunta. Bill and Nancy own around 250 Gelbvieh and Balancer cows, about half of which are registered. Their daughter, Sydney, has her own career teaching animal science and coaching livestock judging at the collegiate level, but she manages to stay very much involved in the Ranch’s operation. Together, the three of them make up Wilkinson Gelbvieh Ranch.
The land has been in Bill’s family since the early 1950s, when his parents, Charles and Jo Wilkinson, moved their sheep and Hereford cows from the family’s ranch in the Hill Country of Texas. Charles laid the foundation for the Colo. ranch, with his forward-thinking conservation and infrastructure practices - all of which have greatly benefited the Wilkinsons in their operation. Growing up with Herefords, Bill made some big changes in the ranch’s genetics. After obtaining an Animal Science degree from CSU, then managing a registered Limousin herd in the San Luis Valley of Colo., Bill moved to West Texas in the early-1980s to manage a ranch there, bringing his Herdbuilder Gold Strike son, a PB Gelbvieh cow and a yearling heifer. He had based his decision to move to the Gelbvieh breed on the landmark 1980’s MARC study, which showed the breed’s superiority in both performance and maternal characteristics. During his time in Crane, Bill met and married Nancy, added Sydney to their family and returned to Colo. in 1990, with 2 PB bulls, 10 PB cows, 15 half-blood females and 65 head of crossbred cows.
Back in Colo., they went to work to develop their Gelbvieh herd, through select purchases and use of AI and ET. They used Angus sires as the logical choice for breeding heifers and, after seeing the acceptance and marketability of the Gelbvieh-Angus cattle, they began to incorporate Angus genetics into their mature Gelbvieh cowherd. So, when the Balancer program was implemented, the Wilkinsons easily took advantage of the new opportunity. The environment of SE Colo. can be difficult, but the Gelbvieh cow excels. Forage is almost always in short supply and can be pretty spread out, so the Wilkinsons emphasize the traits that produce cattle which can travel and maintain body condition. Over the years, they have found a following of customers who trust their Gelbvieh and Balancer bulls to do just that. After trying several marketing options, they have now settled into what seems to work best - a Spring Private Treaty Bull Sale, offering replacement heifers in the Spring and bred females in the Fall. Bill and Nancy also maintain a Gelbviehbased commercial herd. With SE Colo.’s environment, cow numbers need to be flexible.
So, after the 2nd or 3rd drought cycle, they began to re-emphasize having a quality commercial herd, which can more quickly realize their value when there is a need to reduce numbers. From the beginning, the Wilkinsons have been actively involved in the promotion and development of the Breed, through Association membership and cattle exhibition at local, state, and national levels. Bill and Nancy have each served as CGA President and both have served two terms on the AGA Board of Directors, with Bill serving 2 years as AGA President (2002-2003). Meanwhile, Sydney was an active participant in the AGJA, annually attending the Junior Classic and serving on the AGJA Board. Nancy was also honored in 1997 as the AGA’s Member of the Year. “The history of the Gelbvieh breed is a tribute to so many people and we are proud to have been a part of that history since 1986. The road has been a little hard to navigate at times and has had its ups and downs, but we are proud to have been on this path. We are excited to stay the course and see what the next 50 years will bring for the Wilkinson family and the Gelbvieh breed.”
Greetings — Bill, Nancy and Sydney invite you to their

*** This “bid-off” is not an auction – simply a very low-key way for individuals to compete against other to get the bull(s) they want. Each bull will have a floor price posted and we will go through each bull, one by one. Anyone interested in the bull at that price will indicate that interest with a raised hand. If more than one person is interested, we will increase the price incrementally, until only one hand is left in the air, and, at that time, the bull will be declared sold. We will be including bids over the phone, as well as bids left prior to the Sale. Reminder: This is the Opening Day of our Spring Bull Sale season! Being here simply gives you “first choice” at our offerings. Any bulls remaining will be available after this Saturday until all are sold.
Guarantees: • Sight Unseen Purchases are Guaranteed - “If you don’t like ‘em, you don’t take ‘em!” • Bulls are guaranteed for one Breeding Season or one year, whichever comes first. (Disclaimer - Negligence voids guarantee) Note: Wilkinson will retain 1/3 semen interest on all sale bulls. If any bull shows potential for AI use, we would like to collect and market his semen, at the buyer’s convenience. Note: In cases where a Trich test is needed, we can keep the bulls and have them tested here, then work with the buyer for delivery OR the buyer can take the bulls and have them tested at their home vet, and bill us.
If coming from La Junta, reverse it and turn LEFT just past Mile Marker 11.

We feel that this year’s offering is a
true representation of what we are working for in our Program. We continue to stay true to our core values of Functionality, Versatility and Profitability, while being responsive to the needs of the industry, our breed and YOU - our customer.
The Bulls This year’s bull calves are great examples of what we are doing to try to meet each of your individual needs. We still have the performance, but we have injected more calving ease and lower birthweights for those of you who want “heifer bulls,” as well as dual-purpose bulls, which can be used on both heifers and mature cows. To do this, we have purchased 5 new herd sires, added 3 bulls from our herd and sampled over 25 other sires through our AI program — all with the goal of meeting our core values and improving the versatility of our bull offering. We want everyone who comes to our Sale to be able to find the bulls that meet their needs and we think that is possible with these calves this selection. These bulls have been developed on a high roughage ration, at home in a 3-acre trap. As such, they have had lots of room to travel and have been walked through and handled on a regular basis. All bulls are PI-BVD free and have been ultra-sounded, PAP tested and passed a breeding soundness exam. (Trich tests, if required, will be done at buyer’s convenience and our expense.) Supplement sheets with Ultrasound data, PAP scores, scrotal measurements and any other updates will be available the week prior to the Kick-Off Saturday. Bulls will be eligible to go anywhere in the United States. If you cannot take them right away, we will work with you to keep them around here a little longer, at a minimal charge. If you want to take them on Saturday, health and brand papers will be ready to go. We will work with each of you to get the bulls to your place. Since the bulls are at home, feel free to give us a call anytime and we will be happy to have you walk through the bulls at your convenience. Then, return again for the Opening Day! If you can’t make it that day, we can hold a bid(s) for you OR you can come later and see what bulls remain. Reminder - this is just the “Kick-Off” to our Spring Private Treaty Sales. Traditionally, we sell anywhere from 1/3 to 2/3 of the bulls, with a lot of good bulls remaining.

The Heart of the Herd – The Females For quite a few years, we have used this page to list several lots of registered and commercial females. We are changing things up this year and have decided to just promote ALL of our females, telling you a little bit about how we operate and market our females. So, even though we don’t have specific lots listed, we will be happy to talk with you if you are wanting some replacement females. If you read the footnotes in our Bull Sale Catalogs, you will notice that nearly every bull’s dam gets some mention. That’s because we truly love and value our females! Over the years, we have spent a lot of time, energy and money, selecting select females, herd bulls and AI sires, with the goal of improving our herd. Always keeping our environment and end goals in mind, we have focused on breeding for moderate mature cow size, cow efficiency, calf performance, EPD improvement, and, of course, eye appeal. We have been ultra-sounding our yearling females for 15 years and that data has also been a factor in helping us know more about her herd, so we can make those advances. And, just like our Registered herd, our commercial females undergo the same scrutiny – they are expected to breed back each year in a timely manner, they have to be good, moderate-sized mamas with udders and teats that hold up over time and they have to raise calves who will generate money for us, whether we sell them as market steers/heifers or if they are used as replacement females.
is to evaluate and sort our heifer calves into 3 basic groups – our keepers, replacement heifers for sale and the market quality calves. Twenty years ago, this was a “bottom heavy” split, with us usually only keeping the 20-25 head and selling the rest at the Sale barn, where some were routinely bought as replacements, rather than feeders. However, times have changed and so has our herd. This year we ultrasounded all 90 heifers calves, and we are using that information to help us choose about 35-40 replacement heifers. The remainder will be sold as replacement heifers, private treaty or at the Sale Barn. Out of about 90 heifer calves this year, we brought home over 50 head for us to keep, or possibly sell later. We just couldn’t let them go! And we still have another 30+ head in the feedlot that will make someone some great replacement females. So, the long and short of it is that we do have replacement heifers for Sale! Just talk to one of us about what you are wanting. We truly want these heifers to go to someone’s place and be “cows!” That’s the most important indicator of our Ranch’s success – sending our females and bulls out there to make someone else’s herd better! Thank you for your support.
As a result of our efforts, the quality of our herd, and specifically our heifer calves, just keeps improving. Each Fall after weaning, our normal routine

Hard Drive is a little differently bred, sired by a purebred bull we brought in for new genetics (Hole in One) and out of a really nice first calf Concho daughter. He has been a stand-out from the beginning, having a tremendous top and rib, as well as a super disposition. He’s just a big tank, with a lot of performance in his pedigree and an FPI index in the top 30%. He will also make some outstanding females for your replacement pen.

Another TLA bull, out of Eclipse. Almost a carbon copy of his brother, 202H, and all the other Eclipse sons. DNA pending
An Effective son who gives a lot of performance and marbling. His mama is long-time producer. Could be used on bigger heifers, in the right situation.

He’s probably one of the highest performance bulls (EPD-wise) in the Sale. His mother is a Dam of Merit (bought has as a calf, from the Krajewskis in Nebraska) and she always has a good one. He goes back to one of our oldest herd sires, Gunner, who has produced a LOT of good cattle.
HERD BULL ALERT! Extremely well-balanced, thick-made bull. High performance calf that we think would work in any scenario – purebred or commercial. High FPI, so calves should make someone a lot of money in the feedlot. Because of room, we don’t list Heifer Pregnancy (HP), PG30 and Stayability, but you need to look him up! Those numbers will definitely jump off the page!

This guy was born this Fall, to a really nice female. She calved as a yearling, so she is kind of out sync with our normal calving, but she is slowly catching up. He is really smooth made and should make a heifer bull for his new owner.
Gelbvieh and Balancer EPD Averages Winter 2021 AGA’s EPD’s are now based on a National Cattle Evaluation (NCE) collaboration with the American Simmental Association (ASA) and the American Red Angus (ARA). With this collaboration, our EPD’s are on the same base as these breeds, allowing Gelbvieh and Balancer cattle to be compared directly with Simmental and Red Angus cattle. Additionally, DNA testing is currently being incorporated into EPD’s as well. This is
still a “work in progress,” as the AGA is learning how to best incorporate individual animals’ genomic testing into the years of hard data, to better calculate their EPDs. As a result, the EPD’s reported in this catalog may change again - before and/or after they are sold.

MATERNAL TRAITS Calving ease direct (CED): Percent of unassisted births, when used on heifers. A higher number is favorable, meaning better calving ease. Milk (Milk): Genetic ability of a sire’s daughters to produce milk, in pounds of weaning weight. Calving ease maternal (CEM): Percent of unassisted births in a sire’s first-calving daughters. A higher number represents more favorable calving ease. GROWTH TRAITS Birth weight (BW): Predicts the difference, in pounds, for birth weight of the calf. Weaning weight (WW): Predicts expected difference, in pounds, for weaning weight. Yearling weight (YW): Predicts expected difference, in pounds, for yearling weight. CARCASS TRAITS Yield grade (YG): Predicts differences in yield grade score. Smaller values suggest that progeny will have a better lean to fat ratio. Carcass weight (CW): Predicts differences in pounds of hot carcass weight. Ribeye area (REA): Predicts differences in rib-eye area in inches. Greater ribeye areas are preferable. Marbling (MB): Predicts differences in the degree of marbling within the ribeye. Greater marbling numbers are an indicator of higher carcass quality grades. INDEXES - Tools that allow you to select for several EPDs at once, making selections more efficient than selecting on one trait at a time. Some equate those traits into a dollar amount. Total maternal (TM): Combines growth and milk information to predict weaning weight performance of calves from a sire’s daughters. $Cow: Represents genetic value of profit of an animal when retained as a replacement female, as compared to others in herd. A higher number represents more profitable genetics. Feeder profit index (FPI): Represents how a bull’s progeny will perform in the feedlot, when sold on grade and yield. Well ranking sires for FPI have higher marbling and carcass weight than their contemporaries. Maternal traits are not really a part of this index. Efficiency profit index (EPI): Helps select efficient cattle that still have acceptable amounts of gain.
PAP (Pulmonary Artery Pressure) Testing Quite a few of our customers run cattle at higher elevations, so we started PAP testing our bulls quite a few years ago. Dr. Jeremy Ley of Four Mile Clinic in Canon City has been doing the testing since we began. The following chart is a great tool to help evaluate the level of risk for specific PAP scores at a range of altitudes. (NOTE: These bulls have been raised and fed at home, which is at about 5500’ elevation). PAP RISK FACTOR – based on a development and test elevation between 5500-6000 ft. PAP Score
Lower Elevations (under 4000 ft)
Moderate Elevations (4000 - 5000 ft)
High Elevations (5500 - 7500 ft)
