Hooray! Summer is around the corner – the most fun time of the year and definitely my favorite season. Whether you’re heading to the beach, mountains, grandmother’s house, or taking a “staycation” - just having the excuse to change your routine and take time to smell the roses (literally) is the best part of summer. I remember as a child when we would load in the van - my three siblings, mom and

Kansas City Ballet Ball Event
Honoring the Nextof50Dance Years I
Story by Lesley Colvett, photography by Bernie Concannon
It was a night of splendor, talent and the arts as the Kansas City Ballet Guild hosted the 2009 Ballet Ball
at The InterContinental Hotel on the Country Club Plaza. A Benefactor Rooftop pre-party kicked off
the late-winter affair, and set the tone for an elegant evening of dinner and dancing. Lauren Muriel-Marion LaPointe served as the Ballet Ball Chairman, and Mr. A. Joseph and Jeanne
Brandmeyer were the Honorary Chairmen. According to LaPointe, the 2009 Ballet Ball was a remarkable success, raising $525,000. “The
Kansas City Ballet Ball showcased the dreams of students from the Kansas City Ballet School who performed that evening to the delight of Ball guests. The students proudly represented the Future of Dance in Kansas City. Ball Benefactors generously opened their hearts to ensure that all of Kansas City Ballet’s young students will be able to achieve their goals and dreams…We thank Kansas City for once again stepping up to keep our young dancers’ dreams alive!” LaPointe commented. During the festivities, Shirley Helzberg was awarded the Pirouette Award by Kansas City Ballet Guild President Sharon Whalen. Founded in 1957, Kansas City Ballet is a 26-member professional ballet company under the direction of Artistic Director William Whitener and Executive Director Jeffrey J. Bentley.

With the wedding season in full bloom, the timing was perfect for the pairing of a dynamic duo in the wedding industry. Kansas City native Paula Varsalona brought her line of wedding fashions to Michael Nolte’s Briarcliff Village boutique for an exclusive event during the weekend of March 27 and 28, introducing her line to the salon. In conjunction with the fashion event, 5% of all proceeds from the weekend were donated to the Simone Award, in honor of Tommy Simone. The award supports Children’s Mercy Hospital, where Simone was treated, and honors several college scholarship recipients.

On April 1st, donors, sponsors, and staff for Gift of Life, gathered at the beautiful home of Margi and Keith Pence to celebrate the group’s upcoming event “GoSeeDoKC09!” The organization helps raise awareness and provides support for families and patients involved with organ and tissue donation and transplant recipients. The patron’s party included addresses by the event chairs, Tammy Heath and Diane Ravis, as well as the honorary chairs, Barbie and Michael Nolte. All have been personally touched by organ and tissue donation, and each shared their stories with everyone at the event. The hostess for the evening, Margi Pence, had a special connection to the event and organization, as well. Pence became interested in the idea of bone marrow donation through a friend, and decided to become a donor 12 years ago.
“It was too easy of a thing, not to donate,” Pence said. She would later find out that she was a match for a young girl in Germany. Now after donating to her, she keeps in contact and has visited her twice. The actual GoSeeDo event took place April 11, 2009 and was attended by 300 people, raising a net figure of $100,000. The event featured nine tours around the Kansas City area, including unique events such as a private piano recital by Kansas native and Julliard graduate, Koji Attwood, in the home of Kathie and Bryson Cloon, and a behind-the-scenes tour of Fiorella’s Jack Stack. The night culminated in a celebration at the Starlight Theatre with a live auction and entertainment.

More than 800 visited the opening at Gallery F. It featured new work from Jack Rees, Jimmy Walker and Wesley Gross. The collaboration of these three artists provided the Kansas City community an opportunity to enjoy sculpture, mixed media and photography with a futurist inflection. Jack Rees, an accomplished architect, designer and thinker, presented work in an ongoing series of perceptual and sculptural ideas that incorporate geometry, translucence, and complex line. He recently returned from Norway after receiving an international prize for related work. Jimmy Walker - entrepreneur, designer and author of unexpected mixed media works, expresses his vision in emotive portraits. Conveying the fragile beauty of youth, these penetrating faces take us on a journey of the human condition. Wesley Gross, the youngest of the three, showed an amazing talent in his warm photographs of solemn structures in different stages of decomposition, reconstruction and neglect. His complex sense of composition mixes classical photographic reference and pure naiveté. The unexpected maturity of these compositions draws us in. The show inspired both the art lover and the serious collector. A percentage of the proceeds of the show benefited the Pembroke Hill Arts Council. Jack and Jimmy are both alumni of Pembroke Hill and Wesley is a senior. Gallery F is an exhibition space on the first floor of the Firestone building at 20th and Grand in the Crossroads district. bikc

Symphony Designers’ Showhouse Story and photography by Emily Robertson
On April 22nd, a wonderful outdoor party celebrated the Kansas City Symphony Alliance’s 40th anniversary of the Symphony Designers’ Showhouse, the longest-running annual Showhouse program in the United States. This year’s Showhouse, the Nell Donnelly/James A. Reed Estate at 5236 Cherry, offers a glimpse into a historical Kansas City home that has not been open to the public until now. Also
unique to this year’s showhouse, the home offers rooms that have been restored by the current owners in addition to rooms mastered by Nell Hill’s Inc., Danie Dunn Designs and Twigs Interiors LLC, as well as several other Kansas city-area designers and artisans. Upon the closing of the showhouse to tours on May 17, the home will open as the Donnelly/Reed Estate Bed and Breakfast. bikc

Remarkable women, beautiful décor, and delicious food highlighted the second annual City Union Mission “Women Who’ve Changed the Heart of the City” luncheon on April 16. The event honored women who have contributed in extraordinary ways to all facets of business and philanthropy in the Kansas City area. The distinguished women receiving the honor were Adele Hall, Julia Irene Kauffman, the late Muriel Kauffman, Joann Collins, as well as an honor in memory of Pat Lloyd Land. Each woman was introduced and praised by their daughters for their accomplishments. Icy and Alfred Gines with Lydia Allen Dennis Chapman, the Associate Executive Director of Development for the City Union Mission, believes that there were many reasons that made the luncheon special. “The event was such a success on numerous fronts,” Chapman said. “The women we honored were very gracious and the generational giving aspect was explored. Also, approximately 600 attendees were exposed to the work the mission does on behalf of the city daily.” The luncheon helped to fund the Mission’s Camp CUMCITO, a summer camp in Warsaw, Missouri, for 500 low-income children each summer. Since 1924, the City Union Mission’s goal has been to provide care for homeless or impoverished men, women and children throughout the whole year. bikc

He personally selects his ingredients from the best local markets and meat shops. Diversity, entertaining, and balance are his keys to life…food, wine and travel is what he does. Kansas City Caviar is one of Craig’s favorite spring/summer recipes. He grew up in Mississippi where he would pick (and hull) blackeyed and purple hull peas. Ruffles, Sequins, Fringe…Oh my! Summer: the best time to look fresh, fun and fashionable. For that reason, let’s skip the ubiquitous ‘80s trend (you’ll be thankful for that years later when pictures resurface) and get down to the real tips that can keep you looking chic, even in the heat. Flowers
helpful and simple tips for summer arrangements TEXT Emily Robertson •
Using tone-on-tone or monochromatic arrangements creates easy, beautiful arrangements. Using one color in lots of different flowers makes a bouquet with lots of different textures.
•
The more natural looking, the better. Flowers should look natural, not staged.
•
Don’t be afraid to try different containers for your flowers, such as a pitcher, sugar bowl or creamer, or even whimsical containers such as children’s toys. Vases can seem traditional, so don’t be afraid to think outside of the box, especially when planning flower arrangements for parties.
•
Potted plants are a great idea, even for the inside of your house.
•
To make your arrangements last longer don’t forget to change water and make a fresh cut every other day.
•
Go to the market and handpick your blooms to make sure you get the most beautiful and fresh flowers. Be sure to use local resources for your flowers.

Father Matthew Ruhl J.S.
F
Father Matthew Ruhl J.S, pastor of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Kansas City, has big plans for the sum-
mer of 2010 and he’s already hard at work preparing. He,
along with six parishioners from the church, will ride 5,000 miles across the United States, all in an effort to raise money and awareness in the fight against poverty in America. The idea for the ride first came up two years ago as Father Ruhl was riding his bike on the Katy Trail in Missouri. “I thought to myself, wouldn’t it be great to ride across the country on a bike,” Ruhl said. “Then, almost simultaneously, I started to think about how the ride could be used for a bigger purpose.” Ruhl partnered with Catholic Charities and joined in their effort to cut poverty in half by 2010. The ride will take place May 29 through August 28, 2010 and will stretch from Cape Flattery, Wash., to Key West, Fl. The team plans to stop in communities all along their route and participate in events highlighting the issues of poverty that are specific to each area. The group hopes to average around 67 miles a day, and will be accompanied by a support team, which will ride along the bicyclists and assist them in their day-to-day activities. This is not the first physical challenge that Ruhl has taken on. In 2004, Ruhl and a friend kayaked the Missouri River to fundraise for St. Francis Xavier. Father Ruhl hopes that the 2010 ride will in fact, help to cut poverty in half and build up the church as a whole. He also hopes he can change the way people think about their lives. “You don’t need to have your hands folded to pray. You can be clutching a paddle, or holding handlebars. The main thing is to pray, then follow that prayer up with action.” In preparation for the cross-country ride, the first Cycling for Change Kansas City ride will take place on May 23, 2009. The ride offers 5, 20, 40 and 60-miles rides, which are open to both novice and experienced riders. For more information regarding the Kansas City event, or the crosscountry ride, log onto www.cyclingforchange.org. bikc
