Letter From the Editor Happy Holidays!
haljaffe.com
T
Lesley Colvett

his season brings many parties, and what’s more fun than getting dressed up and going to a social gathering to mingle with friends - old and new? By invitation magazine is about parties, events and the charities they benefit, whether it is a blacktie gala, shopping with friends, or a tailgate. With this being the most festive time of the year, pour a cup of eggnog, curl up in front of the fire, and view these “parties with a purpose”! I’m pleased to introduce Tracy Green as our Editor in Kansas City. Tracy is full of passion, energy and creativity and she looks forward to making by invitation the premier magazine in Kansas City. In Tracy’s words: “The philanthropic heart of the city, along with the vast number of Kansas Citians who are devoted to serving their community, guarantees that this magazine will be welcomed with open arms.” We invite you to enjoy Sally Shy’s Etiquette column this month, which focuses on manners and proper table setting. As simple as this may seem, sometimes we forget the basics. To quote my mother, when it comes to entertaining, “Presentation is everything”. Enjoy and Happy Holidays!

ashion and design fused to create a fabulous evening at Elle Ammon Interior Design Studio Thursday, September 18th. Soho-119 bistro provided delicious hors d’oeuvres for the evening, including salmon bruschetta, carpaccio and assorted aged cheeses. Beautiful fashions provided by Bella B’s Boutique were showcased during the festivities, and Trey Debose, a one-man jazz performer, provided the lively tunes. Raffle ticket sales benefited the ONE Campaign, which raises public awareness about the issues of global poverty, hunger and disease in the world’s poorest countries.

lovely reception took place at the J.C. Nichols Auditorium at the National World War I Museum at the Liberty Memorial for members of the Kansas City Regional Association of RealtorsÂŽ (KCRAR) to attend in honor of the Centennial Celebration. Realtors from around the metropolitan area enjoyed mingling with friends and members at this festive afternoon gathering. To mark the 100 year anniversary, KCRAR established the Realtor Centennial Grant Program, which bestowed $100,000 to several local, non-profit organizations. The ten organizations receiving $10,000 each were: ALS Association Keith
Worthington Chapter, CASA of Johnson & Wyandotte Counties, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, First Downs for Down Syndrome, Greater Kansas City Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, Hands & Hearts, Kansas City House of Hope, Midwest Foster Care and Adoption Association, Miles of Smiles, Inc., and Shriners Hospital for Children. The reception also celebrated the countless hours and energy that hundreds of KCRAR members spend in the community volunteering with non-profit organizations that benefit from the community.

elebrate the Arts was the theme of "The New Theatre Guild's" fall fundraiser held at the home of Richard Carrothers. The New Theatre Guild is a relatively "new kid on the block" as they are addressing a unique need, that of targeted scholarship oppor-

They reach out to foundations and the community at large for support of their efforts. The funds raised help them to respond to the needs and dreams of the aspiring young people who wish to become actors, directors or scenery, costumes, lighting or sound designers in the competitive world of Theatre Arts.

etiquette
Set for the Holidays Q: With the Holidays arriving and families getting together, what is the best way to “serve” everyone? A: If you are having a large gathering with all ages, the best way is to serve buffet style. This way everyone can eat at their most convenient time. Be sure to have not only the traditional food, but something that is easy for the “little ones” to easily manage, such as turkey sandwiches and raw carrots. Q: All families have “A Great Aunt Susie”. My children like our Great Aunt Susie, but panic when she heads towards them. She has a tendency to hug and kiss and hold onto them, as they say “forever”. How do I handle this without hurting her feelings?
A: Have a plan on how to handle “great Aunt Susie” before you arrive. Emphasize to your children that she loves them and she may be lonely and that is why she holds on. So be kind, but back to the question. Have them immediately go to Aunt Susie and give her a hug upon arrival. That way you are in control. Q: I am not very good at setting a table correctly. We have unfortunately gotten out of the habit of “properly” setting and eating at the table. How do I set the table? A: Here is the formula for the very basic setting: Facing the table: • The small salad and the large entrée fork are on your left. • Dinner plate in front of you in the middle.
Basic table
• • • • •
The knife next to the plate and the spoon next to the knife on the far right. The napkin goes on the left. Butter plate above the forks. Water, tea and or wine glass above the knife and spoon. Going from the left to your right –again above the knife and spoon- Place the glasses as such: Water, Wine, Tea.
Q: My grandmother loves to serve everything for our Thanksgiving Dinner. Her favorite is to start the meal with an artichoke. How do I eat this item correctly? Please give me some tips on proper eating. A: Artichokes (whole) are eaten with the fingers. Each leaf is removed separately; the soft end dipped in butter or sauce and pulled through the teeth to remove the edible portion. Discard the remainder of the leaf on the side of the plate. The thistle is scraped away with a knife and fork. The heart is then cut into pieces and eaten with a fork.
setting While we are on the “correctly eating question” let me give some tips. Water: Blot your mouth before taking a drink. Do not take a drink while food is in your mouth, roll water around your mouth, or swallow loudly. If the food is too hot, sip a bit of water. Do not drain an entire glassful. Hold a tumbler-style glass near the bottom, a small stem glass by the stem, and a large goblet at the bottom of the bowl. Salt: Salt should be used only after tasting the food. If open salts are used and no salt spoon is available, take salt with the tip of a clean knife or use your thumb and forefinger. Remember when passing the salt that salt and pepper are always passed together. Help yourself then pass them to your right, and place them on the table. Do not hand them to the person next to you.
SALLY’S QUICK TIPS:
Remember: In only 5 seconds, you make an impression. You should be judged by your innate worth, but it is often a first impression that determines whether someone will take the time to let you reveal it.
Do encourage your children to try a bite of everything. They may find a new favorite food. Do remove a bone or gristle from your mouth with your thumb and index finger. Then place it on the rim of your plate. Do avoid speaking with your mouth full. Don’t overload your plate or your fork. Seconds are available. Don’t eat your neighbor’s bread. Your bread is on your left. Don’t push your plate away from you and stretch when you are finished eating

Johnson County Young Matrons In June 1972, the 51 members of the Johnson County Young Matrons (JCYM) raised $17,500 to buy and operate a house in Olathe and establish Temporary Lodging for Children (TLC). The purpose of TLC was to provide temporary homes for dependent, neglected and abused and abandoned children. This was the only home of its type in the Kansas City area. In 2008, TLC For Children and Families served over 18,000 children, youth and families in the local community.
