Chaselight‘s mindset EACH ACTION REQUIERS DIFFERENT KIND OF DAYLIGHT
WHERE AND WHEN IN YOUR FUTURE HOME IS IT BEST TO DO WHAT, FROM A LIGHT POINT OF VIEW?
DOES IT MATCH YOUR HABITS?
UNDERSTAND YOUR FLOORPLAN BY ACTIVITIES DDU | Thousand Floorplans | Chaselight
As the need of housing is on the rise, tools need to be created to help in the decision process a person seeking for a home. The goal of the project is to empower people in their critical analyse of floorplans. We decided to focus on the parameter daylight. The act of turning on a light, during daytime is one of the most depressing acts to be done in a house from an architectural usage point of view, because it implies a disconnection from the outside world. We think as daylihgting as one of the most important features in user experience. It raises the question of atmosphere and plays an important role in the perception of one’s action. Rather than showing a map of different lux numbers showing the intensity, which only can be understood by someone familiar with that subject, we took a different approach. Different kind of lights are needed for different kind of actions. What about beeing critical about a floorplan by seeing if it matches your habits from a daylight perspective? The user can choose between a list of actions and see on the floorplans, where and when is it best to do it, and therefore can decide quickly and easily if the floorplan suits him. Like it or pass it. Tinder mode. 5
sUrVey From 31 people who answered our survey, the most chosen parameter is the 10th: “the amount of daylight falling in the whole house over one year. It is the most popular either in the first position or in the second one. In the next positions we can find parameters either from orientation, costs or energy but in little proportions. From there, we can conclude that solar daylight is a vital element for people when they look for a house and not just in a specific part of the house, but in the whole building.

This illustrates the motivation for the choice to analyse the daylight parameter.

Daylight analysis puts at play a lot of different parameters linked to the environment, the urban context, the geometry of the building and also linked to the user and the way he furnishes his home. After putting a list of all the parameters at stake, we decided to focus on the parameters we thought to be the most important in order to be critical in terms of daylight analysis :

orientation, dimensions of rooms, dimensions of openings. These are the three parameters we are setting Natural Environment up forand theUrban daylight simulation. We are aware that in a further development of the app, more parameters could be taken into consideration.

AC TIONS We chose 3 actions, which could be spread out during the day : coffee drinking, read a book, and take a bath. But eventually, it could be any kind of actions. We studied what kind of direct daylight was best for the action chosen and translated into intensities. We ran daylight simulation for every hour of the day and and looked for each one of them where an action was the best to be done, generating a map per activities per floorplans.

SETTING UP THE GEOMETRY AND THE MESH FOR HONEYBEE
STEP 1
To be able to run the daylight simulation with Honeybee, we set up the parameters mentioned before : geometry, orientation and climate (Frankfurt). We also set up the grid (mesh in dashed points) where the calculations take place per each room.
STEP 2
GETTING THE RESULTS PER ROOM Per floorplan, Honeybee shows us the quantity of lux in each part of the house during one hour. We ran this analysis for every hour of the day during one whole year. Meanwhile, we looked for the perfect light intensities for each of the studied activities, based on the parameters explained on the page before. We created a way on grasshoper to track these intensities in the annual daylight results for a precise hour, then we combined all hours. Then we calculated what rooms had the best intensities and the most often, to be able to compare the rooms between each others. PROCESSING THE RESULT MORE IN DETAILS
STEP 3
Then we made another grasshoper program, to be able to show on one floorplan, where it is best to do the actions according to the best intensities for all the hours through the day. We get at the end floorplans per activities with 2 layers of understanding. DDU | Thousand Floorplans | Chaselight
15
analysis of the algorithm
STEP1 : SETTING UP GEOMETRY & OTHER PARAMETERS The first step is to define the geometry. We started by running the analysis for one box, representing one room, and then we added the other rooms which eventually defined the floorplan chosen. The annual daylight analysis is done per rooms. For each of these rooms, we added windows by giving different glaze ratio (for this project, 0.2) Then, we needed to set up different parameters specific for the daylight simulation. We defined a location by deciding a type of weather. DDU | Thousand Floorplans | Chaselight
We chose weather data from Frankfurt am Main. Then we created a grid on the floor of each room studied to create a mesh. It defines the points where the calculations will be done. The more densed the grid is, the more precise the results are.
STEP2 : ANNUAL DAYLIGHT ANALYSIS From the geometry, the grid, and the location, we could run the analysis with Honeybee. We put these results into another function that sorted thresults for a single hour of a year. We ran the analysis for every hour throughout the day.
16
STEP 3: PROCESSING THE ANNUAL DAYLIGHT RESULTS PER ACTIONS THROUGH THE DAY We defined the parameters for the activities by setting up a range of intensities per actions we want to track. For exemple, for taking a coffee, we were interested in intensities between 100 and 150 lux. We processed the annual daylight analysis results in order to show on the floorplan, where and when the range of intensities per activity is found.
DDU | Thousand Floorplans | Chaselight
STEP 4: EXTRACTING THE RESULTS & LEGENDS We created two layers of results. One comparing rooms between each other for each activities. It counts how many hours each activities is best to do where and sort the rooms between each others. It created a first layer of understanding. Then a map showing exactly where and when an activity is best to be done (according to the range intensity set up) is created.

Let‘s face it / If we had more time... From the beginning, we wanted to focus on daylight. We consider this subject to be a key element in the architecture experience, as conceptor as well as user. The survey we did to non-architects strenghened our opinion as we saw that it was an essencial element for them too. But how can you talk about it with a user ? Light is measured by luxes, but we doubted that number of luxes would tell them much.. This explains why we thought about talking about it through the relation between light and daily experiences the user could relate to, like a morning coffee, a sunset bath or to read a book with natural light, as different actions need different kind of light and ambiance. We took a few to test the concept, but eventually it could be any kind of actions and the user could choose some throuhg a long list. It was really ambitious we soon realized. Indeed, what is the relationship with a physical measure of an intensity, and the personal perception of the light? How can we assess really luxes to an ambiance? Treating a subjective experience objectively with numbers is a complex task. It did not demotivate us but we decided we would be very transparent with the user with our hypothesis and work. For each action selected, a text explaning the set up (bath in a sunset for example) and the relationship to luxes we had decided as parameters would pop up. At least it does bring up some awareness on this subject. We had other ideas to empower the user on the subject in an interactive way, for example by telling them what is the number of luxes of their iphone screens. We wanted the app to be easy and clear (using the Tinder mode) so we created two layers of understanding for the results. One, more rough (quicker to run for the program), comparing rooms between each other, and one more precise, if the user happens be interrested by the first results, he can zoom in a room to see precisely when and where in the room the intensities for the action are found. This way the user can pass to an another floorplan quicker and be very critical if he wants with the results. An another strong point we had in mind in the process was : we should not assume we know the user‘s habbits. We wanted to empower the user with some tools but let him really decide the rest. Maybe Mr X likes to take his coffee late in the morning in his bedroom because he does long night or Mrs Y likes to read in the kitchen. We thought typologies had to be challenged. Moreover, to prevent from having to go through 1000 floorplans (it would be an optionnal feature) a quick survey about the user habbits could be offered to be able to sort potential match. Or the user could point out in a floorplan where usually he likes to do the actions, but this would mean grasshoper would have to understand the notion of typologies.. Here some elements, we are aware could be further developped.
