Andrew Luck, Above playing in his junior season at Stanford, was announced as the #1 Overall Selection to kick off the NFL Draft in April.

The Luck/Griffin Debate

The debate has been there a good while, spawned by the uproar over how former Baylor Quarterback Robert Griffin III burst onto the college football passing scene previously monopolized by Andrew Luck of Stanford. Luck or Griffin? There are plenty of arguments for both sides, though Luck took a bit of a lead in the argument as the Colts stated who they preferred when they picked him #1 overall in the NFL draft in April. Griffin went #2 to the Redskins in the aforementioned draft. Who is better? That will have to be decided on the field in careers which will hopefully span many seasons. However, if one wants an insight into who has a higher probability to be the better of the two, he will need to look further into the statistics. First we’ll go through Luck’s astonishing passing numbers. His freshman season showed promise, but he left a lot to be desired. He threw for 2575 yards and 13 touchdowns on a total of 288 attempts, a relatively minor workload for a starting quarterback. His sophomore season was where he really put himself on the map. He threw for 3338 yards and 32 touchdowns on a much more reasonable 372 attempts. After that season, many predicted he would forego his final two seasons and enter the draft, many presuming him to be a lock as the #1 selection. In his junior season, which would eventually be announced his last; he had a ridiculous 71.3

Robert Griffin III of Baylor and Trent Richardson of Alabama were selected second and third overall, respectively. completion percentage to go along with 3517 yards and 37 touchdowns. Griffin’s path wasn’t quite so star-studded. He attended Baylor, as he had no offers from big time consistent winners. However, even if his overall career wasn’t as impressive as Luck’s, he had a better final season. In his freshman season, he was the average Baylor level quarterback, nothing really special. He threw for 2091 yards and 15 touchdowns. This was interestingly much better than his sophomore season. In said season he played little and performed even less. He threw only 68 passes for 481 yards and four touchdowns. His junior season showed promise of a great senior year to come. He commanded Baylor’s offense nearly flawlessly; throwing for 3501 yards and 22 touchdowns. With the predictions of a strong senior season proven correct, he won the Heisman trophy in a season in which he was the only one to beat or tie Luck in the following categories: Completion Percentage (72.4), Passing Yards (4293), and finally passing touchdowns (37) The race is too close to call right now. The career stats suggest Luck is better, but Griffin caught up with his incredible passing display of a senior season. Who is better? Only time will tell.

: l l u B d s e R ato r t S How Red Bull is taking science to a whole new extreme. By Gabe Bursk

Red Bull has decided to take on a whole new level of extreme sport. “Red Bull: Stratos” is the newest stunt from Red Bull where skydiver Felix Baumgartner will jump out of a capsule at 120,000+ feet high. It is predicted that he will reach speeds at more than 700 miles per hour during his freefall, breaking the speed of sound. Baumgartner will be breaking the previously held world record of 102,800 feet done by USAF Col. Joe Kittenger in 1960, with Kittenger leading the ground crew during this stunt. Baumgartner plans on being the world record holder for longest freefall, first man to break the speed of sound, and highest freefall jump. Red Bull isn’t doing this stunt just for publicity though. They plan on using this technology to help with private spaceflight safety and commercializing it for the near coming future.

“It is predicted he will readch speeds at more than 700 miles per hour during his freefall, breaking the speed of sound.”

Preparing for his 60,000 foot drop, Felix Baumgartner steps out of the launched capsule.
