The West Versus the Rest, or, Are Western Institutions Right for Everyone? ST. MARY’S UNIVERSITY President’s Peace Commission Spring 2013
Tuesday, March 19 – Thursday, March 21, 2013 University Center, Conference Room A
President’s Peace Commission The West Versus the Rest, or, Are Western Institutions Right for Everyone? Since World War II, the United States has led the process of globalization, but despite the world’s becoming increasingly connected, we are still largely divided. While wealth increases, the poverty gap grows, education remains a luxury in many areas, and warring ideals lead to bitter polarization. Is America’s dominant ideology of fierce individualism helping or hindering global human development and social justice? Can that ideology meet the world’s common good — the flourishing of societies — or should we adopt different global perspectives?

IT’S THE END OF THE WORLD… AS WE KNOW IT
Wednesday, October 31, 2012 9:20 am–10:10 am
End of the World: Water Wars and the Fight for Resources
Some believe that the Mayan calendar predicts the end of the world as occurring in December of 2012. While there is no scientific basis for this prediction —with many believing, with the Mayan elders, that we are merely on the cusp of a new cycle of time— it raises interesting philosophical questions. What if the world were to end in a few months? What would you do differently? Or, how would we react with a renewed vigor to mitigate many of the concerns that could potentially lead to our downfall? This program explores how we, as members of a Marianist university, are called to respond to the current problems with an urgency we would feel if we could prevent the world from coming to an end.

Rebel with a Cause: The Global Legacy of Blessed Chaminade Considered a rebel during the French Revolution, Blessed William Joseph Chaminade defied the authorities, risking imprisonment and death, to serve the needs of the people. Today, the spirit of Chaminade lives on through the selfless efforts of lay and professed Marianists and others whose work reflects the Marianist charism. Working through an expanse of problems—in education, health, the environment and economics—in myriad populations with the young and the young at heart, communities around the globe strive to achieve equity for all those who are marginalized and for the advancement of justice and peace throughout the world.

VIOLENCE ON THE BORDER Violence along the U.S.–Mexico border. Almost daily we read and hear about the bloodshed. But we often fail to consider the impact the violence has on the San Antonio community and on our St. Mary’s students, as many have friends and family along the border. The cause is usually attributed to the drug cartels; however, this only begins to explain the problem. The Fall 2010 President’s Peace Commission program will examine multiple factors that contribute to the violence, the direct and indirect consequences, and positive responses that can produce a more just and peaceful situation for the border communities and beyond.

PRESIDENT’S PEACE COMMISSION Spring 2010 March 30 – April 1
“THE OTHER”: THE CHALLENGE OF HUMAN DIVERSITY Within societies, groups of people tend to define themselves in terms of qualities or characteristics that set themselves apart from others. However, problems emerge when a dominant group views its qualities and characteristics as superior, which can lead to fear and hatred of “The Other.” The Church has consistently upheld the rights and dignity of the human person calling us to the obligation to “love our neighbor.” In the 21st Century we have adopted the term “diversity” and acknowledge the multifaceted, globalized world in which we live. However, recognizing diversity does not automatically result in acceptance. Thus we are challenged to understand and embrace “the other” so as to be enriched, enlightened, and empowered as a people, to be friends and not strangers. As the Church reminds us, we as people realize our dignity and rights in relationship with others, in community. These panels will help us explore the difficult work of building a human community of love and acceptance. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________
