2016-2017 | Design Portfolio RIBA PART II Imaginary Garden City Suburbs of Perfect Brightness Beijing | China

In this final year design project, through experimentation of “Chinese” motif and European perspectival techniques, I have generated an urban and city masterplan in outer skirt of Beijing. The design decisions were significantly referenced from 17th century imperial summer palace-Yuan Ming Yuan (Garden of Perfect Brightness). The objective is to examine the re-interpretation of modern microcosmic “China” as a garden city and using Chinese perspectival framework “jing” to capture the pictorial narratives in an architectural setting.

The composiiton and curatorial structures of Beijing’s ancient Summer Palace, along with the drawings and paintings that depict, form the basis of the projects’s spatial, material and representational approach. With a series of digitally constructed, multi-projective composite drawings with Composition in “Jing”, De attempts to describe the project in the manner of the forty views of the Yuan Ming Yuan. “Through examination of the geometric tactics of Borromini and Boule, De establishes a set of architectural principals that respond to the activities of the time-based rituals of the Worshipful Company. A virtual boolean field relative to parameters set against these eventtypes casts a complex hybrid landscape of interlocking virtual and physical structure, loaded with embedded spatial relationships.” Unit 17 Melissa Clinch Harry Bucknall

We have designed the Masterplan so that, from the moment people arrive at the Campus, or move through it, the special relationship between the natural environment, the buildings, and the spaces will be very obvious. We have positioned the key features so that they will give the campus the look, and feel, of a place where sport is pursued in an entirely new way Make Architects

“Proposals for the Heron Quays pavilion and Bank Street walkway. The inspiration for the project is taken from the immediate physical context - that of water and trees. The pavilion and walkway relate to each other and yet are separate in order to define each function separately. The pavilion has been designed to enhance the experience of the member as they journey from the street through to the various spaces inside. Make Architects

This project explored Beijing’s traditional craft of kite making with a contemporary interpretation of kite design and fabrication. The hand-split bamboo frame became a CNC-routed timber framework, handpainted pictograms became a digital storyboard and rectilinear design became parametric geometry. Lit with reactive LED’s the lightweight structure responded to visitors’ touch. Instead of flying, this kite became a piece of playful, interactive furniture around which people could gather, drink and socialise.

the_ right _to _music International Community Centre for Music 2012

Music is a universal language; it transcends culture and race connecting people and their lives together in a unique and beautiful way. Using music as a tool to bring different individuals together, their social exchange can be celebrated through performance and art.

the_right_to_music : Fields Study 2012

The design proposed an insertion to an urban context, providing space for international communities to share and learn from each other through music performance and art exhibitions. Therefore the space acts as a medium, enabling social exchange to take place promoting cultures and ideologies within the whole city.
