NETFLIX PROUDLY SUPPORTS THE
INTV CONFERENCE AND CELEBRATES ITS PIONEERS AND VISIONARIES
Welcome to Jerusalem THE INTV CONFERENCE EXPLORES INNOVATION IN TELEVISION, digital and social media, and anything in between, though it takes place as far from Hollywood as one can get, in Jerusalem. Much like the high-tech industry, the start-up nation, and the national-security industries, the Israeli television content industry has earned a place of honor for over a decade. Israeli formats are sold and watched all over the world, as remakes or with English subtitles, and now, as the borders between the continents have narrowed, in Hebrew and Arabic as well. This is our sixth year holding the INTV Conference in Israel, and we have hosted over 100 speakers from various countries. Each year we examine and redefine innovation in the different worlds of television, financial models, distribution, the growing presence of streaming and digital platforms offering long and short forms, and the worlds of gaming that have been seen by over hundreds of millions of people. The innovations of INTV 2018 may already be eulogized this year. In a world that moves at a breakneck speed, the conference is devoted to understanding the global influences on content consumption, the impact of fake news, the ramifications of the #MeToo movement, and the ways in which social media influencers command the consciousness of audiences worldwide. Hundreds of top executives, creators, talents, producers, distributors, screenwriters, advertising agents, gamers, and digital marketers arrive every year in order to study and deepen their understanding, invest in networking and do business in a way that can produce both immediate and long-term collaborations. On stage at the previous INTV Conference, top executives have made headlines ranging from interesting to sensational. The uniqueness of Israel and Jerusalem draws many industry professionals to their first visit, and many leave full of admiration after personal encounters with people they had never met before, experiencing a new city, lectures, and panels at an international conference with many participants, unique in essence and size. Many of the speakers who arrive every year create new and fascinating connections and afford us access to the people running the international media and entertainment industry, who determine the way of the future. The INTV Conference is an Israeli vision led by Avi Nir, CEO of Keshet Media Group, and Alon Shtruzman, CEO of Keshet International, and has attracted high-quality collaborators who infuse it with wisdom and innovation every year, making it a renowned event within the international media industry. This year, for the first time, we are joined by Deadline Hollywood, which appeals to a variety of readers who wish to follow the latest trends and hear the opinions and lectures of industry leaders. I extend my deepest gratitude to the Jerusalem Development Authority for its endless support, to the conference participants from all over the world, to the dozens of speakers making the long trip to Jerusalem, to the Israelis taking part in the conference, and to our strategic partners over the years: Rick Rosen and Marc Korman of WME. I wish us all a wonderful conference,
Shira Margalit Director and Head Editor INTV Conference

TALKING TV Brimming with excitement and explosive announcements, the INTV conference goes from strength to strength BY PE T ER WHIT E
FROM HOLLYWOOD TO THE HOLY LAND, the INTV conference has managed to create conversation and headlines over the last six years, while also treating some of the biggest film and TV execs from around the world to parts of the Old City of Jerusalem that few are able to enjoy. The event ostensibly started as a way for Keshet Media Group, run by the formidable black t-shirted Avi Nir, to lure A-list Hollywood execs and network chiefs to its backyard as it looked to sell its projects to the U.S. While I’m sure the two-day conference on the banks of the Old City still helps grease the wheels of its global scripted and formats business, it also helps to showcase the growing
BUSTLE Attendees take in last year’s conference.
importance of international to the entire entertainment business. The venue, the Jerusalem International YMCA, itself is a glorious location straight out of central casting and is so close to the historic walled area that it feels like it is the backdrop of a Hollywood action movie. The conference has also grown over the years; the first year I attended, it had the feel of a nostalgic school trip with the likes of Lionsgate’s Sandra Stern and WME’s Rick Rosen leading a group to the Mayor’s house for cocktails on a rickety bus. But it has always attracted top talent, arguably punching above its weight in attendees. Last year, for instance, featured Fox TV Chairman and CEO Gary Newman, HBO programming chief Casey Bloys, Turner chief Kevin Reilly and Showtime’s David Nevins, while previous incarnations have featured Dana Walden, Bob Greenblatt, Jeff Zucker and Hugh Laurie. The event has also always found
a way to create a buzz; one of the earliest iterations featured a visit to the set of entertainment format Rising Star, which put Keshet on the map with a slew of deals in 2013. While many of us were watching the local singers, international buyers, including ABC in the U.S., were hurriedly trying to snap up the rights to the show. One U.K. buyer even made an audacious bid to steal the rights from under the noses of ITV after having snuck in to see the shiny floor series live. In 2017, The Night Manager was the focus. Laurie appeared in Jerusalem alongside exec producer Stephen Garrett and director Susanne Bier and the latter caused a stir when she revealed that a followup to the AMC/BBC spy drama was being developed even though it was originally thought to be a limited series, having been based on the John Le Carré classic. Although the sequel has yet to make it to air, a source
close to the show told me recently that they’re still figuring out a way to follow it up. Last year’s INTV, however, was the one that really caught the headlines. This was after it emerged, on a Deadline-moderated panel session, that Claire Foy received less than Matt Smith to star in Netflix’s royal drama The Crown. Exec producer Suzanne Mackie revealed that while the former Doctor Who star did make more than Foy during the first two seasons, this gender disparity would be fixed for Seasons 3 and 4, which sees Olivia Colman replace Foy as Queen Elizabeth II alongside Tobias Menzies as Prince Philip. The news traveled far and wide, from the New York Times to Buzzfeed and Vanity Fair, as well as via all of our trade rivals. One would assume that organizers Keshet would not want a repeat of this, particularly as it caused much consternation and embarrassment around production company Left Bank and its corporate owners Sony, and even ended up pushing Netflix to fix all gender disparities on its third-party produced titles. However, with a glint of trouble in their eye and a knowing nod to P.T. Barnum’s “there’s no such thing as bad publicity”, they are hoping for more headlines this year. I’m sure the likes of Greg Berlanti, RBG director Julie Cohen, Netflix’s Cindy Holland, Bodyguard creator Jed Mercurio and Amazon’s European content chief Georgia Brown have all been heavily briefed, but you never know what might come out by the Western Wall. ★

not previously being told. Jerusalem’s stories have not been represented on the big screen or on television, and that’s what we’ve aimed to change.
WHAT
The Jerusalem Film & Television Fund A look at Yoram Honig’s efforts to make Jerusalem a major player in film and television, on screen and behind the scenes.
WHO
In the gray industrial quarter of Jerusalem, Yoram Honig, CEO and artistic director of the Jerusalem film & television fund, opened a door to us, saying, “Welcome to Jerusalem, where dreams become reality, and reality itself is a dream.” Beyond the opened door, just as Honig had said, we found ourselves entering a dream that was all too real. Dozens of animators worked quietly in front of screens, developing animated characters for Disney’s Baby Muppet, while on other screens, characters from Mattel’s DreamTopia were brought to life.
WHEN
10 years ago, the Jerusalem development authority asked Honig to set up Israel’s first regional film fund, similar to worldwide film commissions and funds that attract productions both for the expansion of the region’s income and for the cultural purpose of putting local culture, landscape and heroes on the screen.
WHY
3,500 years of history, faith, war, architecture and culture, 42 empires leaving their individual mark. Hundreds of songs, books from countless decades, from all over the world and in a variety of styles, have all celebrated it: Jerusalem,
the capital of Israel. The City of Gold that people have been thinking, talking and dreaming about for centuries, that continues to inspire today. Jerusalem of course receives disproportionate news coverage. Yet somehow, Jerusalem barely features in fiction, in the movies or on TV. Before the Fund began supporting productions, less than 5% of the Israeli film and TV series market share took place in Jerusalem. A city of 800,000 residents, Jerusalem comprises 40,000 students and artists, all of whom love, hate, dream, endure and overcome. These are stories about humanity that were
Culture and industry are the two main areas we concern ourselves with. Specifically, our objective is to support spaces that can foster careers and a place to create for the talented students of Jerusalem’s three film and animation schools. In the first 18 months of the fund’s action, we’ve changed the ratio of the Israeli production market share, from less than 5% to more than 25%; our films have gained recognition and awards from leading festivals such as Berlin, Cannes, Toronto, and have even landed Oscar nominations. Last year, our movies—which account for 25% of Israel’s product—took 70% of the box office sales. Jerusalem is the only place in Israel where a 60% cash rebate for international productions is available. And in the past 5 years, we built Israel’s animation industry from scratch here in Jerusalem, where our studios produce local, IP-based, animated feature films and TV series, creating content for leading companies in the field like Disney and Mattel.

HOW
Perhaps it’s our best kept secret. But you asked, and our warm local hospitality means you can expect an answer. I think you can sum it up in one sentence: In contrast to those who’ve opted for the regular Israeli method, we haven’t tried to reinvent the wheel. We did ask for advice or guidance from local or international professionals, or visionaries. We did extensive research into different film funds and film commissions around the world, and with all this information and advice— and a significant knowledge of our local advantages and disadvantages—we built a program with several stages of development, comprising several simultaneous, parallel activities. As an example, I’ll refer as a test case to our success in cultivating the Israeli anima-
tion industry in Jerusalem in only five years, an industry that in a very short time has begun to employ many animators in several studios and, as mentioned above, produces high quality local and international content. One of the advantages of working in Israel is its impressive array of talents in the fields of content, art and design, and technology. One of our drawbacks is the lack of sufficient budgets. So while we have all the know-how and passion to develop local IP, we lack the financial resources to bring out ideas to fruition. Producing content for international producers, we have the know-how, and we have sufficient budgets— but it’s not our IP. It’s not, as we say in Hebrew, “Neshama.” (This little word has a big meaning behind it. It can be translated to soul,
spirit, caring, love, passion and commitment.) If it were, we’d be taking advantage of both local and international productions, thus addressing the challenges each side poses. Our program’s backbone is based on the acquired professional knowledge and the scope of budgets from producing international content, which in turn will support our local IP productions. After these two steps, in which we saw international and local productions prove themselves, we took local talent to the third stage and established “The Hop Skip & Jump,” developing Israeli IP for international partners. In a six-month annual program, leading Israeli talents receive training and guidance from creators and executives from Sony Animation, Mattel, Disney, Cartoon Network, Nelvana
and more. The developed “bibles” are presented in film markets, pitched to executives and displayed on our website. Thus we take advantage of local talent, bringing their skills to the international industry, and soon, local animation IP will be produced by an international partner for the international market. At the same time, we also established an international animation festival, “AniNation,” which is the largest in Israel. The festival provides a platform for local and international content, while holding master classes and workshops by guests from around the world. Additionally, we have created training programs for studio work, and this year, for the first time in Israel— and perhaps, for the first time in the world—an animation class will be launched at a Jerusalem high school, training the next generation of animators. Thanks to these actions, international friends and consultants, and especially the “Neshama,” we succeeded in establishing the Israeli animation industry in Jerusalem within a few years. You must come to Jerusalem and see with your own eyes, where dreams become reality and our reality is itself a dream.

HISTORIC The Jerusalem International YMCA decked out for INTV.
About the Venue Inside the historic Jerusalem International YMCA BY A NT ONIA B LYTH
ON THE FACADE OF THE JERUSALEM International YMCA there are three inscriptions, which together make clear the organization’s multicultural and interfaith mission: “The Lord our God the Lord is One” in Hebrew, “There is no God but God” in Arabic, and “I am the Way” in Aramaic. Providing community services that unite different faiths and cultures has been the drive behind the Jerusalem International YMCA since its humble 1878 beginnings in a bookstore near Jaffa Gate, and in 1993, the organization was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for those efforts. So it seems only right that today it finds its home in a beautiful landmark complex filled with unifying interfaith symbolism.
Designed by Arthur Loomis Harmon, the architect behind the Empire State Building, the neo-Byzantine-style complex comprises the Three Arches hotel, the 152-foot bell tower and community-fostering pool and gymnasium facilities. The complex’s cornerstone was laid in 1928 by Lord Plumer, the British High Commissioner for Palestine, and in 1933, British General Edmund Lord Allenby declared the building open. In earlier years, the organization, which is affiliated with the Young Men’s Christian Association worldwide, was forced to move several times around the city, even surviving a temporary World War I shutdown. Then, eventually, Dr.
Archibald C. Harte became General Secretary, and it was his fight for the YMCA’s multicultural mission that gained the financial support needed to give it a permanent home. With the assistance of James Newbegin Jarvie of Montclair, New Jersey, along with U.S. and British donations, today’s YMCA complex was built on a piece of land bought from the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate, lying less than a mile from the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, said to house the tomb of Jesus. The complex’s interfaith symbolism appears in its structures in several ways. First, in its three buildings, representing the mind, body and spirit. For the mind, there’s the auditorium. For the body, the swimming pool and gymnasium, and for the spirit, the bell tower with its three chapels. Then there’s the repetition of the number 12—a figure that resonates for the three monotheistic faiths. There are 12 cypress trees in the garden, 12 stone arches above the balconies, and 12 windows in the dome structures. These reference the 12 tribes of Israel, the 12 followers of Mohammed and the 12 apostles of Christ. While in the courtyard, 40 columns represent the 40 days endured by Jesus during his temptation and the 40 years the Children of Israel wandered in the desert. The YMCA complex provides a multicultural space, where equality and friendship have thrived since its 1933 inauguration. As Lord Allenby said on that occasion: “Here is a place whose atmosphere is peace, where political and religious jealousies can be forgotten, and international unity fostered and developed.” ★
