Deadline brings the best of the best for the latest edition of its Contenders: Nominees event

By the time the 76th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards broadcast on ABC rolls around on Sunday September 15, 2024, it will have been only a mere eight months since the last Primetime Emmy ceremony was held on January 15. In fact, Television Academy officials confirm this is the first time we will have two major Primetime Emmy telecasts in the same calendar year. Of course, this all came about due to delays for the airdate because of the WGA and SAG strikes in 2023. Nevertheless, the Academy was determined to get back on track with their regular Emmy cycle, so the actual eligibility period for the 76th Emmys—June 1, 2023 to May 31, 2024—stayed intact and was not changed because of the broadcast juggle. The 75th Emmys on Fox, though critically praised, was the lowest rated in history, perhaps because by the time the show actually happened no one could remember what the nominees
were, as final voting occurred a full four months earlier. We are going to make sure you know who these nominees are, and the remarkable thing about the contenders for the 76th is that there are so many and they are spread out more than ever. The worry was that the strikes would delay production to such a degree that the pickings for the some 20,000 eligible voters would be rather sparse. That has not turned out to be the case, even if some were not able to get rolling again in time. More than enough, both in terms of numbers and in terms of quality, did make the deadlines, and ladies and gentlemen we have a race.
As always Deadline’s Contenders: Television event is right on top of it and we are thrilled to be able to shine a light on some of the key Emmy Award nominees for our virtual Contenders event today. Among the shows taking part, with indepth interviews with stars and creatives, are nominees that cross so many varied categories.
For instance, in Drama Series seven of the eight nominees were not in the category for the 75th Emmys, and we will be featuring two of them, Fallout and Mr. & Mrs. Smith, that made the cut in their very first turn at bat. On the comedy side we are featuring Only Murders in The Building, which after three seasons and 49 overall nominations (21 of them for this third season alone) is going after its first major win in the comedy race. Add to all that Talk Series nominees Late Night with Seth Meyers and The Daily Show, plus Emmy veteran RuPaul’s Drag Race and newbie The Traitors and the contest heats up. We will hear from all in this unique day, which aims to be a sort of ‘one-stop shopping’ opportunity for the voters to catch up with many of the Contenders and to perhaps get the impetus to check them out before casting that all-important ballot. Pete, widely considered to be one of the preeminent awards analysts for both film and television, has for the past 14 years been Deadline’s Awards Columnist covering the
year-round Oscar and Emmy seasons. He is also Deadline’s Chief Film Critic, having previously reviewed films for MovieLine, Boxoffice magazine, Backstage, Hollywood.com and Maxim, as well as Leonard Maltin’s Movie Guide for which he was a contributing editor. In addition to writing, Pete is also host of the PBS SoCal Cinema Series and the weekly PBS television series Must See Movies. He previously held producing positions at Entertainment Tonight, Extra, Access Hollywood, The Arsenio Hall Show, The Martin Short Show and AMC Networks, and is the recipient of five Emmy nominations for writing. Pete is only the second journalist to have received the Publicists Guild of America’s Press Award twice, in 1996 and 2013.

Romantic comedy Red, White & Royal Blue is based on the 2019 novel of the same name by Casey McQuiston and centers around Alex (Taylor Zakhar Perez), the son of the President of the United States, and Britain’s Prince Henry (Nicholas Galitzine). They turn from adversaries into lovers after a fight at a wedding becomes tabloid fodder that drives a potential wedge between U.S./British relations at the worst possible time. Uma Thurman, Stephen Fry and Rachel Hilson also star.
