Meet The Contenders Featuring blockbusters, indies and everything in between, the road to awards season begins here. BY JOE UTICHI AFTER AN UNUSUALLY long, warm summer in the capital, there’s a chill in the air, and autumn and winter are tapping at our doors. Great! Because the yellowing of the leaves marks the start of awards season, that thrilling time in which cinema’s finest unspool their latest movies as they take
the first step down the road to the BAFTAs and Oscars. And as we bring The Contenders London back, to an exciting new venue, Deadline is proud to ring the bell on an event that gives voters their best chance to sample the many delights the season will bring. In its eighth year, The Contenders
is now an international event, happening in three cities around the globe. And London is the first of this season’s sweep of Contenders events. There’s plenty of local talent on our stage today. Amongst the British and Irish names we can expect throughout the day: Black Panther’s Letitia Wright will join us to discuss the Marvel megahit, the first black MCU superhero solo outing. Bel Powley will rep Yann Demange’s White Boy Rick, Hugh Grant will be
REGAL Claire Foy at last year’s inaugural The Contenders London.
here to talk about Paddington 2, and Rosamund Pike and Jamie Dornan will discuss A Private War. British stop-motion masters Tristan Oliver and Andy Gent will join producer Jeremy Dawson to share stories behind the making of Wes Anderson’s delightful Isle of Dogs. The day kicks off, though, with John Krasinski, whose early-year hit A Quiet Place made a loud splash on its release. Another movie making a big impact follows straight after, as Green Book stars Viggo Mortensen and Mahershala Ali join director Peter Farrelly to talk about the film which won the Toronto Film Festival’s People’s Choice Award last month. British history is on display in a pair of films about our royal queens. Yorgos Lanthimos will discuss The Favourite, with Olivia Colman who plays Queen Anne, and the creative team behind Mary Queen of Scots—director Josie Rourke and writer Beau
Willimon—will share the secrets behind their adaptation of Dr. John Guy’s book about the illfated Mary. He will also be on hand today. True life stories continue with Paul Greengrass’s 22 July, for which Norwegian actors Thorbjørn Harr and Maria Bock will take the stage; Jason Reitman’s The Front Runner, about the rise and fall of Senator Gary Hart; and Felix van Groeningen’s Beautiful Boy, with stars Steve Carell and Timothée Chalamet. Two of the most successful documentaries of the year, Morgan Neville’s Won’t You Be My Neighbor? and Tim Wardle’s Three Identical Strangers, are also on the agenda. Meanwhile, Alfonso Cuarón’s childhood memories are brought to the screen in his Venice Golden Lion-winning Roma. He’ll be joined on our stage by stars Yalitza Aparicio and Marina de Tavira to discuss his remarkable approach.
If you ever doubted cinema’s capacity for telling different kinds of stories, look no further than The Contenders London. Producer Janet Healy and art director Colin Stimpson will talk about Illumination’s family animation The Grinch; Tim Blake Nelson, Zoe Kazan and Bill Heck will spill the beans on the Coen brothers’ anthology film The Ballad of Buster Scruggs; Pawel Pawilkowski will share his blackand-white period hit Cold War; and Luca Guadagnino will show off his reimagining of horror movie Suspiria. It doesn’t get much more varied than that. Diversity is a key theme of several of today’s films too. In addition to films already mentioned, we will have a special surprise performance for The Hate U Give, which explores the Black Lives Matter movement, and Michelle Yeoh will discuss the phenomenal success of Crazy Rich Asians. We welcome no fewer than 13 different distributors and 22 feature films today. There’s a good chance that the eventual winners of some of cinema’s biggest prizes will be amongst the group of people appearing. At the very least, we hope you’ll come away that little bit more informed about where you might like to direct your votes. So sit back, relax and enjoy as Mike Fleming Jr., Nancy Tartaglione, Peter White, Andreas Wiseman and I introduce you to the artists and films everyone will be talking about over the next few months. ★

The Films
PARAMOUNT PICTURES A Quiet Place John Krasinski became an overnight horror hero with the release of his latest feature, which follows a family bound to absolute silence to protect themselves from terrifying monsters attracted by sound. Emily Blunt, Noah Jupe and Wonderstruck breakout Millicent Simmonds star alongside Krasinski in his third directorial outing. The inventive postapocalyptic pic scripted by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods has been one of the year’s most exciting success stories.
A QUIET PLACE
GREEN BOOK
THE GRINCH
UNIVERSAL PICTURES Green Book Comedy veteran Peter Farrelly’s first venture into drama tells the powerful true story of American jazz pianist Don Shirley (Oscar winner Mahershala Ali), who finds he has enlisted a racist—ItalianAmerican bouncer Tony Lip (Viggo Mortensen)— as his driver on a tour of venues through the ‘60s South. The heartening road movie is an exceedingly personal project for co-writer Nick Vallelonga, who is Tony Lip’s son, and it’s bolstered by transformative turns from its two leads, charging it to a People’s Choice Award win at the Toronto Film Festival last month.
The Grinch From Illumination Entertainment, the studio behind such blockbuster hits as Sing and Despicable Me, comes an animated adaptation of Dr. Seuss’s classic tale. Starring opposite Kenan Thompson, Rashida Jones and Angela Lansbury, Benedict Cumberbatch gives voice to the author’s iconic green curmudgeon, on a mission to ruin Christmas for those hapless Whos of Whoville. Directed by Yarrow Cheney and Scott Mosier, with narration from Pharrell Williams, the family film is sure to bring on the holiday cheer that the Grinch so disdains.
THE ACTOR’S SIDE Intriguing one-on-one conversations between Deadline’s awards editor and leading actors of film & television NEW VIDEOS EVERY WEDNESDAY WATC H NOW AT D E A D L IN E .C OM
FOX SEARCHLIGHT PICTURES Isle of Dogs A pack of canines help a young boy in search of his lost companion in Wes Anderson’s second stop-motion outing, following 2009’s Oscarnominated Fantastic Mr. Fox. Set in a dystopian near-future Japan plagued by canine flu, the Kurosawa-inspired tale was warmly embraced in its Berlin premiere. Playing out in English and Japanese, the visually elegant feature draws on the talents of myriad Anderson regulars, as well as a number of elite newcomers—among them, Bryan Cranston, Greta Gerwig and Yoko Ono.
ISLE OF DOGS
The Favourite A servant (Emma Stone) and a duchess (Rachel Weisz) war over the affections of Queen Anne (Olivia Colman) in Yorgos Lanthimos’s singularly strange 18th Century drama, set within the English court. With its fair share of prurient delights, violent ends and idiosyncratic period details, the Venice title won Colman the Volpi Cup for Best Actress, also taking the fest’s Grand Jury Prize.
THE FAVOURITE
WALT DISNEY STUDIOS Black Panther Ryan Coogler introduces Marvel’s first black superhero with his enormous comic book hit, which grossed over $1 billion worldwide. Chadwick Boseman stars as T’Challa, heir to a technologically advanced African kingdom, who must don his Vibranium-weave suit and confront a threat from the past, in a fight for the future of his people. With strong work from Coogler collaborators including Oscar-nominated DP Rachel Morrison, the film’s all-star cast features Michael B. Jordan, Letitia Wright, Lupita Nyong’o and Danai Gurira.
BLACK PANTHER
FOCUS FEATURES Won’t You Be My Neighbor? In a strong year for documentaries, Focus Features’ Fred Rogers doc has been heralded as a commercial and artistic success, generating significant attention from industry figures and moviegoers alike. An exploration of the life, legacy and lessons Mr. Rogers bestowed upon generations of viewers through his PBS series Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, Morgan Neville’s film has stirred up all kinds of nostalgia for simpler, kinder times.
WON’T YOU BE MY NEIGHBOR?
Mary Queen of Scots Scripted by House of Cards creator Beau Willimon, this epic historical drama dissects a power struggle for the ages between two remarkable women: Mary Stuart (Saoirse Ronan) and Queen Elizabeth I (Margot Robbie). Widowed at 18 after a brief stint as the Queen of France, Ronan’s Scottish royal comes after her birthright, attempting to unseat her distant cousin, and is met with the consequences of misplaced ambition; imprisonment and death. British theatre director Josie Rourke’s 16th Century drama positions Ronan and Robbie as returnees to the awards race, after nominations last year.
MARY QUEEN OF SCOTS
ROMA
THE BALLAD OF BUSTER SCRUGGS
NETFLIX Roma Alfonso Cuarón’s Venice Golden Lion winner is his first feature outing since 2013’s Gravity—for which he became the first Mexican filmmaker to win Best Director—and his most personal project to date, which he wrote, directed, and shot himself. Drawn largely from memory, the gorgeous black-and-white drama chronicles a year in the life of a middle-class family in ’70s Mexico City, honing in on the perspective of their maid. Selected as Mexico’s Foreign Language Oscar submission, Cuarón’s vision was channelled through his recollections of growing up, without many of his collaborators ever seeing a full script. 22 July Viscerally exploring another tragedy of modern times, Paul Greengrass puts to good use the methodology he has refined over a career, through Oscar-nominated films including Captain Phillips and United 93. Here, the director employs
22 JULY
a Norwegian cast and crew to study the deadliest terrorist attack in the country’s history, which claimed 77 lives, and what transpired in its wake. As politicians and lawyers grapple with senseless far-right violence, one survivor embarks on a long and difficult road to recovery, preparing to testify against his attacker. The Ballad of Buster Scruggs Originally conceived as a series, Buster Scruggs is the product of 25 years’ worth of written material. Shooting digitally for the first time with their latest take on the American frontier, the Coen brothers enlist a shining cast for a satisfying series of storybook vignettes. A somber dissection of Western mythology’s archetypes and tropes, the pic offers up some original songs—and the poetry of an armless, legless man. Tim Blake Nelson stars as the auteurs’ titular rogue.
THREE IDENTICAL STRANGERS
THE FRONT RUNNER
WHITE BOY RICK
NEON Three Identical Strangers One of three hot Sundance docs going on to major box office success, Tim Wardle’s film was the only feature to do so without the benefit of a high-profile subject. Offering up a bizarre true story, the documentary follows three young, adopted men growing up in ‘80s New York. After a fateful moment in community college, where one of the three is mistaken for an identical student— and a third identical stranger sees their story in the news—the trio realise that they are triplets who were separated early in life, for reasons that prove shocking. SONY PICTURES White Boy Rick A newcomer tackling a meaty part, Richie Merritt shines in a real-world story set in ‘80s Detroit. He stars as Richard Wershe Jr., whose path took him from drug kingpin to FBI informant, all before the age of 16. With criminal behaviour modelled
for him by his shady, arms-dealing father (Matthew McConaughey) and drug-addicted sister (Bel Powley), White Boy Rick gets caught up in the burgeoning war on drugs. Directed by ‘71’s Yann Demange, the film features strong supporting turns from McConaughey, Bruce Dern and Jennifer Jason Leigh. The Front Runner The first film ever to open on U.S. Election Day explores a moment that forever changed American politics and the way in which they’re covered. Directed by Jason Reitman—with Reitman regulars Vera Farmiga and J.K. Simmons in the fold—Hugh Jackman is Senator Gary Hart, whose 1988 presidential campaign is undone when his extramarital affair comes to light. Based on the book All the Truth is Out by Matt Bai, the Altmanesque drama reflects on the standards to which we hold our representatives—standards that have shifted over time.
20TH CENTURY FOX Bohemian Rhapsody Rami Malek channels Freddie Mercury in a musical biopic chronicling Queen in the years leading up to the British rock band’s legendary Live Aid performance in 1985. The drama also hones in on challenges in Mercury’s life and solo career and his AIDS diagnosis. Written by Oscar nominee Anthony McCarten, the film’s cast includes Lucy Boynton, Aiden Gillen, Tom Hollander and Mike Myers. The Hate U Give Amandla Stenberg takes the lead in the adaptation of Angie Thomas’s bestseller. A promising black student navigating two opposing worlds—between her workingclass neighborhood and rich, predominantly white high school—Starr’s life is forever changed, sitting in a car with her unarmed friend, as she watches him get gunned down by the police. As she contemplates how to best respond to a tragic situation, George Tillman Jr.’s drama brings the gravity of the Black Lives Matter movement to the YA arena through Starr’s eyes.
DESTROYER
THE HATE U GIVE
ANNAPURNA PICTURES Destroyer Nicole Kidman transforms herself beyond recognition to play the subject of a gritty, contemporary noir. An LAPD detective beaten down by her job, Erin Bell looks back on an undercover assignment from her past in order to make peace with herself. Karyn Kusama’s film complements Kidman’s mesmerising anti-heroine with an array of finely drawn characters, played by Tatiana Maslany, Bradley Whitford and Sebastian Stan. AVIRON PICTURES A Private War A fearless war correspondent for The Sunday Times who sustained severe damage to her body and psyche in her mission to bring global conflicts to light, Marie Colvin gets the feature treatment, courtesy of Oscar-nominated documentarian Matthew Heineman. Played
A PRIVATE WAR
by Rosamund Pike, Colvin is blind in one eye after a prior assignment and runs back into danger, losing her life while covering the Syrian civil war. Capturing the harrowing nature of Colvin’s work, with notable turns by Jamie Dornan and Stanley Tucci, the drama celebrates the courage and sacrifice of a superlative journalist.

WARNER BROS. Paddington 2 Michael Bond’s Paddington the Bear continues his journey in Paul King’s sequel. Stumbling on a treasure map within a birthday gift bought for Aunt Lucy, Paddington becomes a pawn in the game of a self-involved actor—Hugh Grant’s Phoenix Buchanan—who will stop at nothing to claim the hidden prize. Framed for a crime he didn’t commit, the lovable creature sets out to make things right. With Ben Whishaw in the title role, the charming family film was nominated for a total of three BAFTAs earlier this year.
PADDINGTON 2
Crazy Rich Asians Based on a bestselling 2013 novel by Kevin Kwan, Jon M. Chu’s romantic comedy stars Fresh Off the Boat’s Constance Wu and newcomer Henry Golding, and follows native New Yorker Rachel Chu on her journey to Singapore to meet her boyfriend’s family. The first studio picture in nearly three decades to feature a majority Asian American cast, the film’s success has underscored a substantial hunger for diverse stories and storytellers in mainstream entertainment.
CRAZY RICH ASIANS
COLD WAR
AMAZON STUDIOS Cold War Polish director Pawel Pawlikowski cements his reputation as a master of the black-and-white period piece with his latest feature. Coming on the heels of gorgeous 2013 Oscar winner Ida, the lush romantic drama is similarly personal, mining once again the history of the director’s homeland. The complicated love story of two musical performers in post-war Eastern Europe who are torn apart by myriad factors, Pawlikowski’s latest was met in Cannes with a rapturous reception, and the award for Best Director.
SUSPIRIA
Suspiria Four months after completing the masterful Call Me by Your Name, Luca Guadagnino set out to pay homage to Dario Argento’s 1977 horror classic. A dark, menacing fairy tale influenced by ‘70s German cinema, Guadagnino’s remake explores the darkness swirling around a world-renowned dance company, and the secrets embedded within it. Reuniting the director with A Bigger Splash stars Dakota Johnson and Tilda Swinton—and scribe David Kajganich—the big screen fever dream features Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke’s debut score.
BEAUTIFUL BOY
Beautiful Boy Oscar nominees Steve Carell and Timothée Chalamet tackle a heart-breaking father-son story in Felix van Groeningen’s first English-language film. Scripted by Lion’s Luke Davies, based on a pair of best-selling memoirs, the drama captures Nic Sheff’s struggle with methamphetamine addiction, and his father David’s hopelessness, watching his son fight for his life. Depicting the experience of addiction in grim detail—courtesy of its young star’s weight loss and general commitment to his part—the film also stars Maura Tierney and Amy Ryan. ★
