Meet The Contenders Featuring blockbusters, indies and everything in between, the road to awards season begins here. BY PETE HAMMOND

FOR THE EIGHTH CONSECUTIVE YEAR, we present what

has become the awards season’s premier attraction—a oneday event showcasing all the year’s key hopefuls in cinema. Originally inspired by the popular and influential TED Talks, The Contenders offers each studio and distributor anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes (depending on their output) to put their best foot forward and present what they believe will be movies worthy of awards consideration. In front of an invited audience of AMPAS voters and other key guild members, the best of the best are unveiled in a one-stop-shop that allows industry members to see movie clips and

hear top actors and filmmakers discussing their latest work. The idea is to help voters parse out what they want to see—and what they need to see—from that daunting pile of screeners that arrives every year. In this full-day event, once again at the DGA, voters will have the chance to sample the movies that will be making the most noise all the way up to the Oscars at the end of February. This is where it all starts, and we’re proud to say that The Contenders has been so

successful that we recently held our second annual sister event in London—and will be adding a first-time New York outing on December 1. But it’s this one, right here in the heart of Hollywood, that started it all, and this year promises to be our biggest and best yet, complete with a breakfast sponsored by Amazon Studios, a lunch sponsored by Annapurna Pictures, and a closing cocktail reception sponsored by Netflix. In between these networking opportunities, our audience will be treated to quite a show on stage, along with a few exciting raffles. Those who attended last year will recall seeing many 2017 Oscar winners first at The Contenders, including Guillermo del Toro, Best Picture and Director winner for The Shape of Water; Gary Oldman, Best Actor winner for Darkest Hour; Sam

Rockwell, Best Supporting Actor for Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri; and Allison Janney, Best Supporting Actress winner for I, Tonya. Among the films in the 2018 lineup are Amazon’s Beautiful Boy and Cold War; Sony Pictures Classics’ Stan & Ollie and The Rider; 20th Century Fox’s The Hate U Give, Bohemian Rhapsody, and Widows; A24’s Hereditary and Eighth Grade; Neon’s Vox Lux and Three Identical Strangers; Focus Features’ On the Basis of Sex, and Boy Erased; Annapurna’s Destroyer, If Beale Street Could Talk, and Vice; Walt Disney Studios’ Black Panther and Ralph Breaks the Internet; Universal’s First Man and Green Book; Warner Bros.’ A Star Is Born and Crazy Rich Asians; Bleecker Street’s Leave No Trace and What They Had; Sony’s The Front Runner and Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse; Aviron’s A Private

War; CBS Films’ At Eternity’s Gate; Paramount’s A Quiet Place; and wrapping it all up is Netflix with 22 July, Roma, and Birdbox. The formidable talent list grows right up to press time and beyond, but—subject to change—you can count on seeing many stars, including John C. Reilly, Amandla Stenberg, Russell Hornsby, Joanna Kulig, Rami Malek, Elizabeth Debicki, Toni Collette, Elsie Fisher, Natalie Portman, Felicity Jones, Armie Hammer, Nicole Kidman, Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong’o, Viggo Mortensen, Mahershala Ali, Linda Cardellini, Bradley Cooper Constance Wu, Henry Golding, Michelle Yeoh, Amy Adams, Hugh Jackman, Rosamund Pike, Jamie Dornan, Robert Forster, Willem Dafoe, Yalitiza Aparicio, Marina de Tavira, Trevante Rhodes and Sandra Bullock. And that’s just the acting talent. Among the filmmakers we have Felix van Groeningen, Chloé Zhao, Graham King, Bo Burham, Ari Aster, Brady Corbet, Mimi Leder, Joel Edgerton, Karyn Kusama, Ryan Coogler, Damien Chazelle, Peter Farrelly, Barry Jenkins, Adam McKay, Debra Granik, Jason Reitman, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, Tim Wardle, Matthew Heineman, Elizabeth Chomko, John Krasinski, Susanne Bier and Alfonso Cuarón—plus many other Oscarwinning and nominated film artists. So prepare to dive in and see what awards season has in store this year. Enjoy Deadline’s The Contenders! ★

The Films

AMAZON STUDIOS Beautiful Boy Steve Carell and Timothée Chalamet—both past Oscar nominees—tackle a heartbreaking father-and-son story in Felix van Groeningen’s English-language debut. Scripted by Lion’s Luke Davies and based on a pair of bestselling memoirs by David and Nic Sheff, the drama captures the young Nic’s struggle with methamphetamine addiction and his father’s hopelessness as he watches his son fight for his life. Co-starring Maura Tierney and Amy Ryan, the film depicts the experience of addiction in grim detail, with Chalamet losing 20lb in order to capture what he has called “the dark stages of the drug”. Cold War Polish-born director Pawel Pawlikowski cements his reputation as a master of the black-and-white period piece with his latest feature. Following on from his gorgeous 2013 Best Foreign Language Film Oscar winner Ida, this dark, romantic melodrama is similarly personal, mining once again the history of the director’s homeland. The fraught love story of two musical artists in post-war Eastern Europe—played by Joanna Kulig and Tomasz Kot—who are torn apart by self-sabotaging passion, Pawlikowski’s latest was a hit in Cannes, where he won the award for Best Director.

BEAUTIFUL BOY

THE RIDER

high school. Starr’s life is forever changed when her best friend is shot by the police, and as she wrestles with how to best respond to the situation, George Tillman Jr.’s drama brings the gravity of the Black Lives Matter movement to the YA arena through her eyes.

BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY

SONY PICTURES CLASSICS Stan & Ollie Oscar nominees Steve Coogan and John C. Reilly join forces to portray legendary comedy duo Laurel and Hardy in Jon S. Baird’s biopic. Reteaming Coogan with Philomena scribe Jeff Pope, the film follows the movie icons after their golden era, as they embark on a grueling theater tour of post-war Britain. The drama presents another side to the duo, showing the friendship between the two legends away from the bright lights of stage and screen. The Rider Chloé Zhao’s stunning second feature was warmly embraced on its debut at Cannes, with an extraordinary life on the festival

circuit to follow. An impressionistic drama in the vein of the director’s first outing, Songs My Brother Taught Me, the film examines a rodeo cowboy’s crisis of identity after a near-fatal head injury brings his career to a halt. Shot in the badlands of South Dakota, and starring reallife wrangler Brady Jandreau, the film was nominated for four Independent Spirit Awards. 20TH CENTURY FOX The Hate U Give In this adaptation of Angie Thomas’s bestselling novel, Amandla Stenberg stars as Starr Carter, a promising black student navigating two opposing worlds— her working-class neighborhood and her rich, predominantly white

Bohemian Rhapsody Rami Malek channels the late flamboyant rock star Freddie Mercury in a musical biopic chronicling the rise of British rock band Queen in the decade or so leading up to their legendary Live Aid performance in 1985, six years before the singer’s AIDSrelated death in 1991. Written by Oscar nominee Anthony McCarten, the film’s eclectic cast includes Lucy Boynton, Aiden Gillen, Tom Hollander and Mike Myers. Widows After winning Best Picture for 12 Years a Slave in 2013, Steve McQueen returns with an artful thriller based on the 1983 Lynda La Plante book and cowritten with Gone Girl author Gillian Flynn. The film follows four Chicago women who break bad after the deaths of their criminal husbands, executing the heist the men never brought to fruition as they struggle to reestablish their lives. The action-packed drama is led by Viola Davis, with support from Michelle Rodriguez, Elizabeth Debicki and Cynthia Erivo.

A24 Hereditary Ari Aster’s feature debut is A24’s third in-house production and their highest-grossing film to date. In this dark supernatural horror, Toni Colette delivers a performance of visceral power, starring as Annie, an artist whose family is haunted by a series of increasingly disturbing occurrences after the death of her overbearing mother. Delivering the chills opposite the actress, with equally impressive performances, are Gabriel Byrne, Ann Dowd, Milly Shapiro and Alex Wolff. Eighth Grade One of the year’s hottest Sundance debuts, comedian Bo Burnham’s coming-of-age tale is intimate and often painful, charting a shy teenage girl’s efforts to survive her final middle school days. Known previously for voicing Agnes in the Despicable Me series, Elsie Fisher brings raw authenticity to the role of Kayla, who finds her voice making YouTube advice videos. With the support of her loving, single father, Kayla strives to come into herself as she prepares for the daunting world of high school. NEON Vox Lux An intimate epic of two halves, the second feature from actor-director Brady Corbet tells the story of a world-famous singer, Celeste, played at different ages by Raffey Cassidy and Natalie Portman. Spanning 18 years in the life of this pop-culture phenomenon, the

musical drama examines the moment that defined her childhood, and the darkness that birthed her voice. With Jude Law in the role of Celeste’s manager, Corbet’s latest features the narration of Willem Dafoe, a score by Scott Walker, and songs penned by Australian singer-songwriter Sia. FOCUS FEATURES On the Basis of Sex U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is the subject of Mimi Leder’s drama. Front and center as young lawyer Ginsburg and her husband Marty, Felicity Jones and Armie Hammer portray the couple’s efforts to bring a groundbreaking case before the highest federal court in the land, challenging a century of gender discrimination. Scripted by Daniel Stiepleman, the film pays overdue homage to a brilliant force of nature.

Boy Erased In Joel Edgerton’s adaptation of Garrard Conley’s potent memoir of the same name, Lucas Hedges plays a young man battling against his sexual identity while attending a church-supported gay conversion program at the behest of his conservative parents. The 2017 Oscar nominee shines opposite two past winners, Nicole Kidman and Russell Crowe, in Edgerton’s return to the director’s chair following 2015’s The Gift. ANNAPURNA PICTURES Destroyer Nicole Kidman transforms herself almost beyond recognition to play the subject of this gritty, contemporary film noir. An LAPD detective beaten down by her job, Erin Bell (Kidman) looks back toward an undercover assignment from her past in order to make peace with herself.

Reteaming The Invitation helmer Karyn Kusama with that horror film’s scribes, the film complements Kidman’s mesmerizing anti-heroine with an array of finely drawn characters, played by Tatiana Maslany, Bradley Whitford and Sebastian Stan.

BLACK PANTHER

WALT DISNEY STUDIOS Black Panther Ryan Coogler introduced Marvel’s first black superhero with his enormous comic book hit, which grossed over $1bn worldwide. Chadwick Boseman stars as T’Challa, heir to a technologically advanced African kingdom, who must don his Vibraniumweave suit and confront a threat from the past in a fight for the future of his people. With strong work from Coogler collaborators, including Oscar-nominated DP Rachel Morrison, the film’s all-star cast features Michael B. Jordan, Letitia Wright, Lupita Nyong’o and Danai Gurira. Ralph Breaks the Internet Six years after Wreck-It Ralph broke the box office, John C. Reilly and Sarah Silverman are back in an anticipated sequel that sees Ralph and Vanellope move on to new adventures. While the pair have rescued Litwak’s Arcade from the villainous Turbo’s wrath, the Sugar Rush game is now in disrepair. Questing after a piece to fix the console, the friends set off into the Internet, encountering online gaming and an assortment of well-known Disney characters. Directed by Rich Moore and Phil Johnston of the

Oscar-winning Zootopia, the film draws on the voice talents of Kristen Bell, Gal Gadot, Mandy Moore, Auli’i Cravalho and more. UNIVERSAL PICTURES First Man Making Oscar history with La La Land as the youngest winner of the Best Director prize, Damien Chazelle shoots for the moon once again, this time reteaming with Ryan Gosling to chart the trajectory and psychology of astronaut Neil Armstrong, from his entry into NASA’s training program to his first steps on the moon in 1969. The most visceral account to date of the pioneering space traveler’s experience, the film is as emotional as it is physical, exploring the profound sense of grief felt by Armstrong and wife Janet (Claire Foy) after the loss of their young daughter. Green Book Comedy veteran Peter Farrelly’s first venture into drama tells the powerful true story of African-American jazz pianist Don Shirley (Oscar winner Mahershala Ali), who hires Italian-American bouncer Tony Lip (Viggo Mortensen) as his driver on a tour of venues through the racist ’60s South. The feelgood road movie is an exceedingly personal project for co-writer Nick Vallelonga—Tony Lip’s son—and it’s bolstered by transformative turns from its two leads, whose work steered it towards a People’s Choice Award win at the Toronto Film Festival in September.

A Star is Born The fourth iteration of the 1937 classic, Bradley Cooper’s auspicious directorial debut portrays a star-crossed love affair between two musicians—one a remarkable, unknown talent on the cusp of superstardom, the other an alcoholic rock star who took her there, even as his own career falters. Starring opposite the Oscar-friendly Cooper, musician Lady Gaga delivers a breakthrough acting performance. Co-writing songs that they have since performed live— at festivals like Coachella, and prominent LA venues—the pair share palpable chemistry, with strong support from Sam Elliott, Dave Chappelle and Andrew Dice Clay. Crazy Rich Asians Based on a bestselling 2013 novel by Kevin Kwan, John M. Chu’s romantic comedy stars Fresh off the Boat’s Constance Wu and newcomer Henry Golding, and follows native New Yorker Rachel Chu on her journey to Singapore to meet her boyfriend’s family. The first studio picture in nearly three decades to feature a majority Asian American cast, the film’s success has underscored a substantial hunger for diverse stories and storytellers in mainstream entertainment. ANNAPURNA PICTURES Vice After breaking down the 2007 financial crisis with The Big Short, Oscar winner Adam McKay

reteams with Christian Bale, who put on the pounds to play Dick Cheney for a provocative political drama. Explaining how the businessman became the most powerful Vice President America has ever seen, the film casts Oscar winner Sam Rockwell as President George W. Bush, who is more than happy to take a back seat as Cheney pulls the strings. Among other A-listers tackling meaty realworld parts are Amy Adams and Steve Carell. If Beale Street Could Talk Following Moonlight’s Best Picture win, Barry Jenkins pursued a long-held dream of adapting James Baldwin’s 1974 novel for the screen. The romantic drama centers on Tish (newcomer KiKi Layne), a 19-year-old with a baby on the way, whose husband Fonny (Stephan James) is behind bars for a crime he didn’t commit. But the fight for Fonny’s freedom is merely one strand of this meditation on love, justice and the African-American experience. BLEECKER STREET Leave No Trace Debra Granik has a knack for finding and cultivating talented unknowns. While her 2010 drama Winter’s Bone put Jennifer Lawrence on the map with an Oscar nomination, her latest feature offers up a platform for another relative newcomer, Thomasin McKenzie. The actress plays the 13-yearold daughter to Ben Foster’s

by Jason Reitman—with Reitman regulars Vera Farmiga and J.K. Simmons in the fold—it stars Hugh Jackman as Senator Gary Hart, whose 1988 presidential run came undone when his extramarital affair came to light. Based on the book All the Truth is Out by Matt Bai, the Altman-esque drama reflects on the standards to which we hold our representatives—standards that have shifted over time.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse Afro-Latino teenager Miles Morales makes his first film appearance in this animated adventure from producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. Voiced by Shameik Moore, Morales crosses parallel dimensions as SpiderMan, teaming up with alternate versions of the character to confront a powerful threat. Directed by Bob Persichetti, Peter

NEON Three Identical Strangers One of three Sundance docs going on to major box office success, Tim Wardle’s film was the only feature to do so without the benefit of a high-profile subject. Offering up a bizarre true story, it follows three young, adopted men growing up in ’80s New York who, after a series of random meetings, come to realize that they are triplets who were separated early in life—for reasons that prove shocking. AVIRON PICTURES A Private War A fearless war correspondent for The Sunday Times who sustained severe damage to her body and psyche in her mission to bring global conflicts to light, the story of Marie Colvin finally gets the feature treatment courtesy of Oscar-nominated documentarian Matthew Heineman and actress Rosamund Pike. The film captures the harrowing reality of the work Colvin did, which led to her death while covering the Syrian Civil War. With notable turns by Jamie Dornan and Stanley Tucci, the drama celebrates the courage and sacrifice of a superlative journalist.

BLEECKER STREET What They Had Fractured family dynamics are at the core of Elizabeth Chomko’s feature debut. Hilary Swank stars as Bridget, a woman who returns home to deal with her Alzheimer’s-afflicted mother (Blythe Danner), her brother’s (Michael Shannon) icy pragmatism, and her father’s (Robert Forster) fight to let go of the life he once had. Wrestling with her past, Bridget struggles to connect as an implacable illness threatens to tear her family apart, once and for all. CBS FILMS At Eternity’s Gate Named after a painting by iconic Post-Impressionist Vincent van Gogh made shortly before his death at age 37, Julian Schnabel’s latest explores the last days of the artist’s life, as he absorbs nature’s beauty and meditates on his purpose. Widely recognized for his own art, Schnabel casts Willem Dafoe as Van Gogh, presenting artful turns from Oscar Isaac, Mads Mikkelsen, Rupert Friend and more. For his performance, Dafoe was recognized with the Venice Film Festival’s Best Actor award. PARAMOUNT PICTURES A Quiet Place John Krasinski became an overnight horror hero with the release of his latest feature, which follows a family bound to absolute silence to protect themselves from terrifying monsters attracted by sound. Emily Blunt, Noah Jupe

he employs a Norwegian cast and crew to study the deadliest terrorist attack in that country’s history, which claimed 77 lives, and what transpired in its wake. As politicians and lawyers grapple with senseless far-right violence, one survivor embarks on a long and difficult road to

recovery, preparing to testify against his attacker. Roma Alfonso Cuarón’s Venice Golden Lion winner is his first feature outing since 2013’s Gravity—for which he became the first Mexican filmmaker to win Best

Director—and his most personal project to date, which he wrote, directed, and shot himself. Drawn largely from memory, the gorgeous black-and-white drama chronicles a year in the life of a middle-class family in ’70s Mexico City, focusing on the perspective of their maid. Selected as Mexico’s Foreign Language Oscar submission, Cuarón’s vision was channeled through his own recollections of growing up. Bird Box Sandra Bullock and Sarah Paulson wade into a post-apocalyptic world in a mysterious thriller from Susanne Bier. Oscarnominated scribe Eric Heisserer adapts Josh Malerman’s 2014 novel, which sees a woman and her children trying to escape from ominous alien forces— creatures that will drive humans insane if they so much as see them. Bowing this December, the pic features an exceptional cast that includes John Malkovich, Jacki Weaver, Trevante Rhodes and more. ★
