Meet The Contenders With headline-making real-life stories, Hollywood icons and even the Vatican involved, this is Deadline’s biggest awards season event yet. BY PETE HAM MOND
IT’S HARD TO BELIEVE THIS IS THE NINTH YEAR OF OUR CONTENDERS EVENT IN LOS ANGELES—the city
where this must-stop on the awards season circuit first began, almost a decade ago. In that time The Contenders has only grown bigger and better, expanding alongside demand with our Emmy television Contenders event in April, as well as additional Oscar season events in both London and New York. It’s truly a logistical triumph to piece it all together, but with the dedicated work and programming magic of Madelyn Hammond, along with a staff of dedicated Deadliners, we aim to create a seamless day of informative entertainment. It’s the ultimate place for voters to kick off the season as we provide a run-down of how to pick from that pile of screeners.
This year it is bigger than ever— literally—and will fill the newlyrefurbished DGA Theatre with a record-busting 38 movies from the 20 participating studios and distributors. The Contenders was originally inspired by TED Talks, with each studio given a specific amount of time to show their wares. And it’s like a military operation to gather this incredible lineup of stars and filmmakers to our stage, where they will show clips and discuss their films, some of which haven’t even been seen yet. This year the lineup truly covers the waterfront in terms of subject matter, size of budget, comedy, drama, dramedy, superheroes, personal passion projects, re-

imaginings of real-life events, animation and international sensations. These are the movies the studios themselves choose to showcase for your consideration, so we should consider this annual lineup of awards hopefuls the best of the best. Increasingly, true-life stories have become a huge part of awards season, and this one is no different. At least 16 of the films on display at The Contenders deal with real people or real subjects. Some revolve around hot button topics ripped from the headlines like The Report, Dark Waters, Bombshell, Just Mercy, Seberg and The Banker. Expect to see on stage some of the people these movies were inspired by,
in addition to the stars who play them. Then there are movies covering such real-life icons of entertainment as Mister Rogers, Elton John, Sharon Tate and the aforementioned Jean Seberg. And speaking of icons, you can’t go any higher than the two living Popes, Francis and Benedict, whose story is told in The Two Popes. We don’t have the real ones beaming in from the Vatican, but we’ll certainly have the next best thing. Movies got personal this year as well, and we’ll explore films taken from the real lives of those actors and directors who lived them, however thinly disguised they may be. That includes Noah Baumbach’s Marriage Story,
Pedro Almodóvar’s Pain and Glory, Lulu Wang’s The Farewell, and Shia LaBeouf’s Honey Boy. From Harriet Tubman to Ford v Ferrari, to an Irishman to some reallife huckster strippers, there will be something for everyone. The racial divide will be explored as we feature exciting new films like Waves, Queen & Slim, and Jordan Peele’s Get Out follow-up Us. It’s also gratifying to report that this year’s The Contenders LA event sports the largest number of female directors in our history. Whether that is an encouraging trend or just the nature of the movie year 2019 remains to be seen, but we are thrilled to be able to showcase them, and all of these great movies. It is an embarrassment of riches. Enjoy Deadline’s The Contenders! ★

A24 Waves Known for films including Krisha and It Comes at Night, Trey Edward Shults takes on his third consecutive collaboration with A24, with this evocative drama. Examining the complexities of growing up and falling in love, the critically acclaimed feature’s focus is Tyler (Kelvin Harrison Jr.), a high school wrestler with a supportive family and a loving girlfriend behind him. Pushed aggressively toward greatness by his father (Sterling K. Brown), Tyler sees cracks start to form in the perfect façade of his life. Featuring a dynamic soundtrack from Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, Waves also stars Lucas Hedges and Alexa Demie. The Farewell A Sundance hit, this comedic drama centers on Billi (Awkwafina), a strong-willed ChineseAmerican writer who returns to China upon learning that her grandmother has been diagnosed with terminal lung cancer. Choosing to keep their beloved Nai Nai (Zhao Shuzhen) in the dark about the short time she has left to live, Billi’s family decides to throw an impromptu wedding, where they all can be together with her one last time. Shot over the course of 24 days in Changchun, China, the film is based in part on the experiences of writer/director Lulu Wang. FILM MOVEMENT Corpus Christi Inspired by real events, Jan Komasa’s drama has been selected this year as the Polish entry for
Best International Feature Film. Premiering at the Venice Film Festival, the film centers on Daniel (Bartosz Bielenia), a 20-year-old whose time spent in a Youth Detention Center results in a spiritual awakening. Barred from entering the seminary as a result of the crime that landed him on lockdown, Daniel goes to work at a carpenter’s shop following his release, while refusing to give up on his dream of becoming a priest. FOCUS FEATURES Harriet Following up on her breakout screen role in Steve McQueen’s Widows, Tony winner Cynthia Erivo taps into the courage and determination of a legendary American hero for this stirring Harriet Tubman biopic. Directed by Kasi Lemmons, from a script she penned with Gregory Allen Howard, the drama tells the story of a slave-turned-abolitionist, who risked her life to free hundreds of slaves, leading them through a network of safehouses called the Underground Railroad. Scored by 2019 Oscar nominee Terence Blanchard, the film also features supporting turns from Leslie Odom Jr., Joe Alwyn and Janelle Monáe. Dark Waters Based on a New York Times article by Nathaniel Rich, Todd Haynes’ latest is a psychological thriller, centered on corporate defense attorney Robert Bilott (Mark Ruffalo). When Bilott uncovers a connection between a series of mysterious deaths and powerful American chemical company DuPont, he fights to tell the truth to the public, bringing a class action lawsuit against the company, resulting in a payout of over $600 million just two years ago. legendary creature—a living remnant of man’s ancestry known as ‘The Missing Link’. Released in April, the stop-motion adventure film features the voices of Zoe Saldana, Stephen Fry, Matt Lucas, Timothy Olyphant and Emma Thompson.
LAIKA/UNITED ARTISTS RELEASING Missing Link Written and directed by Chris Butler (ParaNorman), LAIKA’s follow-up to the Oscar-nominated Kubo and the Two Strings follows charismatic English explorer Sir Lionel Frost (Hugh Jackman), an investigator of myths and monsters, whose encounter with a Sasquatch named Mr. Link (Zach Galifianakis) leads him on an expedition into the Himalayas, which may prove the existence of a
20TH CENTURY FOX Ford v Ferrari Henry Ford II (Tracy Letts) hires American car designer Carroll Shelby (Matt Damon) and maverick driver Ken Miles (Christian Bale) to build a state-of-the-art race car and defeat Ferrari at the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans, in James Mangold’s latest critically acclaimed feature. Contending with a corporate meddler, extreme
danger, and their own odd couple dynamic, the driven, hot-headed visionaries pit themselves against an automotive titan in a David and Goliath tale for the ages. Based on a true story, the visually and sonically immersive drama’s cast also includes Jon Bernthal, Josh Lucas, Caitriona Balfe and Noah Jupe. LIONSGATE Knives Out Between outings in the Star Wars universe, Rian Johnson returns to the whodunnit genre with an original story à la Agatha Christie. When wealthy crime novelist Harlan Thrombey (Christopher Plummer) is found dead a day after his 85th birthday, famed detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) arrives at his estate to investigate an idiosyncratic group of subjects, suspecting foul play and mistrustful of the whole bunch. Scheduled for release later this month, the energetic puzzler’s starry ensemble includes Michael Shannon, Toni Colette, Chris Evans, Don Johnson, Jamie Lee Curtis, Ana de Armas and Jaeden Martell. Bombshell Charlize Theron and Nicole Kidman channel Fox News personalities Megyn Kelly and Gretchen Carlson in this timely drama from director Jay Roach, which examines the toxic atmosphere Roger Ailes (John Lithgow) created at his network, and the group of women who decided to take on the powerful executive. Written by Charles Randolph, with Malcolm McDowell cast as Rupert Murdoch, the film is bolstered by the performances of Margot Robbie, Allison Janney, Kate McKinnon and more, and is set for a December 20 debut.
DREAMWORKS ANIMATION Abominable In this animated adventure, a bright teenage girl named Yi (Chloe Bennet) comes face to face with a juvenile Yeti, which is frantically evading its evil scientist captors. Travelling from Shanghai to the Himalayas, alongside the creature, which Yi has named Everest, and her two cousins, Yi is steadfast in her mission to set Everest free and hopefully reunite him with his family too, as she processes the deeply painful loss of her father along the way. Mounted by Jill Culton and co-director Todd Wilderman, the feature’s voice cast includes Eddie Izzard, Sarah Paulson and Albert Tsai. How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World Released on February 22nd, this animated adventure wraps up writer/director Dean DeBlois’ How To Train Your Dragon trilogy, based on a book series by Cressida Cowell. The franchise’s third installment follows young Viking Hiccup (Jay Baruchel), as he learns that his dragon Toothless is not the only one of his kind, which leads them on a quest to find dragon utopia ‘The Hidden World’ before a hunter named Grimmel (F. Murray Abraham) can do the same. Kit Harington and Cate Blanchett also lend their voices to this family film. UNIVERSAL PICTURES Queen & Slim Jodie Turner-Smith and Daniel Kaluuya play the titular characters in this first feature from Melina Matsoukas, a prolific music video director who has recently made notable contributions to television, with Insecure and Master of None. on the Bonnie and Clyde story, the romantic thriller centers on a couple whose date takes an unexpected turn when a police officer pulls them over. Scripted by Lena Waithe, it also stars Chloë Sevigny, Bokeem Woodbine and Indya Moore, and will open AFI Fest on November 14. Us Writer/director Jordan Peele’s followup to Get Out, which earned him an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay, centers on Adelaide Wilson (Lupita Nyong’o) and her family, who arrive at their Santa Cruz summer home for vacation, only to be attacked by frightening intruders that look just like them. Opening this year’s South by Southwest Film Festival, the horror thriller has grossed over $255 million worldwide. Winston Duke, Shahadi Wright Joseph and Evan Alex play the other members of the Wilson family (and their disturbing doppelgängers), while Elisabeth Moss, Tim Heidecker and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II round out the cast.
WARNER BROS. Just Mercy Michael B. Jordan executive produces and stars in Just Mercy—the first film he was able to make with an Inclusion Rider through his company, Outlier Society Productions. Based on Bryan Stevenson’s memoir, the legal drama follows a civil rights defense attorney who’s made it his life’s mission to fight for justice. Appealing the murder conviction of death row inmate Walter McMillian (Jamie Foxx), Stevenson finds himself battling within a labyrinthine legal system. The film also stars Brie Larson, a frequent collaborator with director Destin Daniel Cretton, who wrote the script with Andrew Lanham. Motherless Brooklyn Three-time Oscar nominee Edward Norton gets behind the camera for the first time since Keeping the Faith (2000) with this colorful crime drama, based on a novel by Jonathan Lethem. Writing, directing and producing the pic, Norton stars as Lionel Essrog, a lonesome private

Supervised by Senator Dianne Feinstein (Annette Bening), he uncovers shocking secrets regarding the CIA’s Detention and Interrogation Program, which result in the titular 6,700-page report. Also starring Jon Hamm, the Sundance title serves as a clear call for government accountability.

detective in 1950s New York who sets out to solve the murder of his mentor (Bruce Willis). Afflicted with Tourette’s Syndrome, the detective seeks justice for his friend in the NYC underworld. Premiering at Telluride, Norton’s longtime passion project includes Willem Dafoe, Gugu MbathaRaw and Alec Baldwin. Joker Director Todd Phillips and Oscar nominee Joaquin Phoenix make their entrées into superhero storytelling with this gritty, standalone origin story of the iconic Batman villain. Scripted by Phillips and Scott Silver, who drew inspiration from ’70s character studies and the films of Martin Scorsese, the thriller centers on Arthur Fleck, a failed stand-up comedian who turns toward crime and chaos, out of contempt for the society that he feels has disregarded him. Featuring a memorable turn from Robert De Niro, the film earned the Venice Film Festival’s top prize, the Golden Lion, .
ROADSIDE ATTRACTIONS The Peanut Butter Falcon Zak (Zack Gottsagen), a young man with Down syndrome escapes from an assisted living facility to pursue his dream of becoming a professional wrestler in this first narrative feature from Tyler Nilson and Mike Schwartz. Striking up a friendship with a fisherman on the run (Shia LaBeouf), Zak finds acceptance and adventure while evading Eleanor (Dakota Johnson), the social worker who has been sent to bring him back home. Winning the Audience Award for Narrative Spotlight at the South by Southwest Film Festival, and going on to gross over $19 million, the crowd-pleaser marks Gottsagen’s feature debut. AMAZON STUDIOS The Report Adam Driver stars as real-life Senate staffer Daniel J. Jones in Scott Z. Burns’ political thriller. Celebrating truth tellers, it’s a timely exposé of U.S. government abuses, in which
Seberg French New Wave icon and Breathless actress Jean Seberg gets the feature treatment in Benedict Andrews’ drama, with Kristen Stewart starring in one of her richest and most poignant roles to date. Inspired by true events, the ’60s-set biopic explores a turning point in Seberg’s life, when she became a target of the FBI due to her political and romantic affiliations with civil rights activist Hakim Jamal (Anthony Mackie). Soaked in the paranoia of a person under a microscope, the film also stars Jack O’Connell and Zazie Beetz. Honey Boy With his first feature script, Shia LaBeouf opens a window into his turbulent childhood and early adult years. Helmed by Alma Har’el, the story centers on a young actor’s complicated relationship with his father (played by LaBeouf himself), a war veteran, ex-rodeo clown and recovering alcoholic who emotionally and physically abuses his son, while at the same time giving him the title’s sentimental nickname. Noah Jupe and Lucas Hedges also star in the drama, playing Otis, the fictional version of LaBeouf, at ages 12 and 22.
NETFLIX Marriage Story Having dissected a child’s experience of divorce in his 2005 film The Squid and The Whale, which earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Screenplay, Noah Baumbach has crafted a more expansive portrait of the same subject in Marriage Story. Starring Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson as a playwright and an actor going through a messy, bicoastal divorce, the drama also takes a close look at the legal system surrounding the couple. Delving into dark comedy, with musical moments in the mix, the cast includes Laura Dern, Ray Liotta and Alan Alda. The Irishman Robert De Niro reteams with Martin Scorsese for the first time in over two decades to star in this gangster film, based on a 2004 memoir by Charles Brandt. Starring opposite Al Pacino, Harvey Keitel and Joe Pesci, De Niro plays Frank “The Irishman” Sheeran, a hitman for the mob, who in later years takes stock of the jobs he took on for the Bufalino crime family and what they cost him personally. Bringing the drama to the New York Film Festival in September, Scorsese employed Industrial Light & Magic to produce groundbreaking VFX work that would de-age the actors at its center, in a way never before seen on screen. The Two Popes Two men of God with two radically different worldviews collide in Fernando Meirelles’ feature, scripted by Anthony McCarten. Set in 2013, the drama imagines an encounter behind Vatican walls between the progressive, soon-to-be Pope Francis (Jonathan Pryce) and the conservative, incumbent Pope Benedict
(Anthony Hopkins), men with vastly different approaches to the papacy, and contrasting visions for the future of the Catholic Church. The men debate tradition and innovation in scenes that include a recreated Sistine Chapel, and Hopkins himself expertly playing the piano. SONY PICTURES Little Women The eighth film adaptation of a classic 1868 novel by Louisa May Alcott marks Greta Gerwig’s highly-anticipated follow-up to her 2017 directorial debut, Lady Bird, which earned her Oscar nominations for Best Original Screenplay and Best Achievement in Directing. Prominently featuring several members of the Lady Bird cast, including Saoirse Ronan, Timothée Chalamet and Tracy Letts, the drama follows the March sisters, four women coming of age in the wake of the Civil War. Set for release this December, the film’s cast includes Meryl Streep, Florence Pugh, Emma Watson, Chris Cooper, Laura Dern and Bob Odenkirk. A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood Following up on last year’s Can You Ever Forgive Me?, Marielle Heller casts two-time Oscar winner Tom Hanks as a singular American treasure, in this portrait of children’s television host Fred Rogers. Based on a true story, the film pits Rogers against a magazine journalist (Matthew Rhys), who reluctantly sets out to profile him. Wary at first of Rogers’ intentions and his innate good-heartedness, the writer’s life is forever changed through his exposure to an icon and a worldview counter to his own. Susan Kelechi Watson and Chris Cooper round out the cast.

Avengers: Endgame
Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt share the screen for the first time in Quentin Tarantino’s ninth film, produced by David Heyman. A love letter to ’60s LA and the cinema culture that birthed the auteur, the feature centers on the friendship between a faded television actor and his stunt double, as they navigate an industry they no longer
to his long-lasting creative partnership with songwriter Bernie Taupin (Jamie Bell). Deriving its title from the 1972 song of the same name, the film tells the inside story of how John’s outward success was at times soured by childhood pain and a battle with addiction. WALT DISNEY PICTURES Frozen II The long-anticipated sequel to a box office smash, which won two Academy Awards, this musical fantasy film picks up with Queen Elsa (Idina Menzel) of Arendelle and her sister Anna (Kristen Bell) three years after the events of Frozen. Joining forces with rugged mountaineer Kristoff (Jonathan Groff), loveable snowman Olaf (Josh Gad) and reindeer Sven, the royals travel to an ancient forest, to discover the origins of Elsa’s wintry powers, and thereby save their kingdom. Making their entrées into the Frozen world in this sequel from Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee are Evan Rachel Wood and Sterling K. Brown.

recognize. Featuring Margot Robbie as Sharon Tate, narration from Kurt Russell and a stacked cast that includes Al Pacino and Bruce Dern, the film drew a seven-minute standing ovation at its Cannes premiere. PARAMOUNT PICTURES Rocketman Dexter Fletcher—who stepped in
to complete the Oscar-nominated Bohemian Rhapsody with Bryan Singer’s contentious exit—revisits the musical biopic this season with the fantastical story of the iconic singer-songwriter Elton John. Taron Egerton portrays John as he navigates his breakthrough years, from his early days at the Royal Academy of Music through
Avengers: Endgame This fourth Marvel film from directors Joe and Anthony Russo serves as the culmination of a 22-film story arc and has grossed almost $2.8 billion worldwide, thus surpassing Avatar as the highest-grossing film of all time. Boasting one of the most star-studded ensembles ever assembled, and featuring Stan Lee’s final cameo for the MCU, this superhero smash picks up after the catastrophic events of Avengers: Infinity War. With several Avengers down at the hands of Thanos, the remaining superheroes come together to try and restore order to the universe.
SONY PICTURES CLASSICS Pain and Glory In his eighth collaboration with Pedro Almodóvar, Antonio Banderas plays Salvador Mallo—a stand-in for Almodóvar himself. An aging filmmaker coping with illness and creative stasis, Mallo finds comfort in opiates as he’s flooded with memories of his highs and lows, and a number of those close to him—including his mother, played by Penélope Cruz. As he grapples with the uncertainty of what’s to come, the director reflects on the events that shaped him, for better or worse. Selected as the Spanish entry for Best International Feature Film, Almodóvar’s 21st feature won Banderas the Best Actor prize at Cannes. FOX SEARCHLIGHT PICTURES Jojo Rabbit Based on a novel by Christine Leunens, Taika Waititi’s follow-up to the riotous Thor: Ragnarok is a daring, boundary-pushing comedy. Starring newcomer Roman Griffin Davis and Scarlett Johansson, the emotionally stirring satire centers on a proud member of the Hitler Youth and his imaginary best friend, Adolf Hitler (Waititi). Discovering that his mother has been hiding a Jewish girl in the family’s attic, young Jojo is furious, and will ultimately have to make a choice between love and hate. Sam Rockwell, Stephen Merchant, Alfie Allen and Thomasin McKenzie also star. A Hidden Life Devout Austrian farmer Franz Jägerstätter finds his faith vigorously tested in Terrence Malick’s spiritual World War II epic. Living a quiet family life in the alpine village of St. Radegund, Jägerstätter sees his tranquil existence disrupted by the rise of the

Third Reich—and when the farmer declares himself a conscientious objector, who refuses to fight for the Nazis, he undergoes years of tormenting experiences that threaten to break him down. Starring August Diehl and Valerie Pachner, Malick’s politically resonant portrait of quiet heroism features the final performances of Michael Nyqvist and Bruno Ganz.
NEON Parasite The first Korean winner of the Palme d’Or centers on Kim Ki-taek and his family, an unemployed, hopeless bunch living in squalor. A dark comedy of the highest order, Bong Joon Ho’s film sees the lower-class kin entangle themselves in the lives of a much wealthier family
Clemency Hitting theaters on December 27, Chinonye Chukwu’s second feature centers on prison warden Bernadine Williams (Alfre Woodard), whose years spent carrying out death row executions have taken a psychological toll. Preparing to execute yet another inmate, the warden finds herself connecting with the man she’s been summoned to kill, confronting in this moment demons within herself, and the enormous burden of the career she has chosen. The first black woman to win the Sundance Film Festival’s U.S. Dramatic Grand Jury Prize, Chukwu’s drama also stars Aldis Hodge, Richard Schiff, Danielle Brooks and Wendell Pierce.
The Elephant Queen
by way of a long con, with unexpected and powerfully disturbing consequences. Next spring, this satirital look at the horrors of class division will contend as South Korea’s Oscar submission for Best International Feature Film. Song Kang-ho, Lee Sun-kyun, Jo Yeo-jeong, Choi Woo-sik and Park So-dam star.
STX ENTERTAINMENT Hustlers Based on a New York Magazine article by Jessica Pressler, Lorene Scafaria’s comedic crime drama was a Toronto crowd pleaser that quickly turned into a major box office hit. Starring Jennifer Lopez and Constance Wu, the story follows a highly talented exotic dancer, a newcomer to the strip club scene, and the friendship that blossoms between them. Banding together with canny coworkers as the 2008 financial crisis hits, Ramona and Destiny set out to take their Wall Street clientele for all they’re worth. Keke Palmer and Julia Stiles also star, alongside musical artists Lizzo and Cardi B. APPLE Hala Executive produced by Jada Pinkett Smith, Minhal Baig’s film examines the experiences of Hala (Geraldine Viswanathan), a Muslim teenager coping with the unraveling of her
family, as she grows up and comes into own. The only child of Pakistani immigrants, the responsible academic talent’s life in Chicago is thrown into chaos, as cultures clash and she pursues her desire for poetry-loving skateboarder Jesse (Jack Kilmer). Based on Baig’s 2016 short film of the same name, the Sundance title co-starring Gabriel Luna, Azad Khan and Purbi Joshi is set for release on November 22. The Elephant Queen Premiering at the Sundance Film Festival, this family-friendly documentary centers on Athena, the matriarch of an elephant family living on the African savannah, who does everything she can to protect her herd during the worst drought she’s ever experienced. Narrated by Chiwetel Ejiofor, the film from Mark Deeble and Victoria Stone takes viewers on an epic journey into the animal kingdom in this meditation on love, loss and what it means to come home. The Banker Scheduled for a December 6 release, George Nolfi’s drama is based on the true story of Joe Morris (Samuel L. Jackson) and Bernard Garrett (Anthony Mackie), two African American entrepreneurs of the 1950s who hired a working-class white man (Nicholas Hoult) to pose as the head of their business empire, while assuming their own imaginary roles as the company’s janitor and chauffeur. Finding their own way around the racism of their era, the pair took on the establishment, and went on to become two of the wealthiest and most successful real estate owners in the United States. ★
