SPINE IN BLUEJEANS (Triptych), 2003-2005 archival digital prints on photo paper and/or vinyl with grommets 30" x 54", each panel life size, separately framed in black $3900 "In great pain from sciatica in 2003, I consulted a chiropractor who took two spinal X-rays while I stood before him fully clothed in jeans and T-shirt. One was of the cervical and thoracic range, and the other was of the lumbar range, although at slightly different sizes. My life experiences usually find their way into my work, and I’ve used X-rays of my hands taken for diagnosis in a project once before, so I thought I’d use these, too, especially amused by the zipper and button. But because I was so incapacitated, I couldn’t sit at my computer, so I asked my intern, Jaime Pene, who’d been scanning my clothes for another project, if she’d please combine the two to form one image of my entire spine. Not familiar with anatomy, and not thinking to check my bookshelves or the internet, and not realizing that because the X-rays were sized differently, she combined them without noticing that vertebra T-10 appears in both X-rays, so she stacked them. I so enjoyed this little Dada extension, making my body an almost plant-like reed, that when I recovered and refined her work, I kept them."

Smith&Jones About the Artists: Sarah E. Brook is a Brooklynbased visual artist. She was raised in Reno, Nevada, studied fine art at the University of Notre Dame (BA, 2003) and the Art Students League of New York (2011-2013). Solo exhibitions include "Offering" at the Vanderbilt Republic (Brooklyn, 2015), and "Necessity" at the Greenpoint Gallery (2014). Notable group exhibitions include The Unscene (NYC, 2015) and Bemis Center (NE, 2015). Brook was awarded a residency at the Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts (NE, 2015), first place at Viridian Artists 25th Annual Juried Show (NY), and best in show at Greenpoint Gallery’s Annual Salon Show. Australian born artist Prudence Groube’s world of MIMACHAN inhabits the space between the seen and unseen, inviting the viewer to view through the candy colored lens of a pop culture drifter. The world of MIMACHAN does not have to make sense. There is no earth, no sky, no boundaries. In this place a new language, a new way of being becomes possible. Prudence’s work is in private collections both domestically and internationally. She has shown in Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Miami in both solo and group shows. She is the founder and curator of COLLECTnyc - dedicated to the support and continuing education of emerging artists, creating events and programs that allow artists to interact with the community whom they seek to serve through their cultural contribution. Charles Heppner is a visual artist living in Austin and Chicago. He was born in Chicago into a large Catholic family where individualism was allowed unfettered. He has a degree in Mathematics from the University of Wisconsin—Madison. He has worked in finance and is a devoted parent of three children. His current body of work concerns spirituality and the human relationship to nature.

Moray Hillary is a multimedia artist whose work engages with a variety of social, political and current issues. Often referring to personal history, his work explores varying relationships between culture and politics. Often the starting point that connects his working practise are notions of fragility, or the ephemeral. From this simple guiding principle the work reconfigures elements from the past. The need to examine the past, personal or otherwise- to make sense of the present is strong, if not innate. Still it is important to know that hindsight is not always 20/20. Personal histories are often written from perspectives deeply affected by the passing of time; tainted by political or cultural agendas- leaving us with what is at best a partial record of what actually happened. Moray Hillary has been widely exhibited internationally and in the United States. He is currently represented by Galerie Protege in NYC and has a forth coming solo exhibit there in May 2016, “ Pre New Reflective�, curated by Alison Pierz. (www.morayhillary.com)

A native New Yorker, Barbara Rosenthal is a prolific, idiosyncratic, highly original Media and Performance artist, referred to in print as a "Media Poet" by The Village Voice and elsewhere since the 1980s. She produced her first Performance/Installation in 1968, and Photography/Video in 1976, often mixing text with surreal photographic imagery, and such works are in the collections of MoMA, Whitney, Tate, etc. Her major books are "Clues to Myself", "Sensations", "Homo Futurus" and "Soul & Psyche" and the next, the novel “Wish for Amnesia� is just out now from Deadly Chaps Press, NYC. TJ Volonis received a BA in Japanese Studies from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. After graduating, he moved to Brooklyn and has been a resident of the borough for the last 15 years. A self-taught artist, TJ entered one of his earliest pieces (Chair, #2) in the 2005 GLAAD OUTAuction where he won the award for Best Emerging Artist – Mixed Media. That same chair also appeared in the May 2012 edition of Elle Décor Magazine. He continued his work with copper by making tables, chairs, and other functional works of art. In 2008 his work expanded into a series of wallmounted sculptures. Further experimentation and serendipity fueled his interest and skill in learning and executing the ancient Japanese technique of kintsugi which he has incorporated into his artistic practice. His work has appeared in: Architectural Digest, The New York Observer, LUXE Interiors + Design, Wallpaper* Magazine, Elle Décor, Lonny Magazine, Freshome, Core 77, Design Milk, Artsicle, Black Lines of Design, Gotham Gazette, Examiner.com, and the Brooklyn Paper. In 2013 he showed work at ICFF in New York City, and in 2014 he showed at BKLYN DESIGNS. About the Organizer:
Joseph A. W. Quintela is an artist, publisher, and art-organizer working at the fault lines emergent in the face of post-textual and post-productive modes of living. With a particular interest in material excess, systemic collapse, and generative revitalization, his practice harnesses a fluency in a variety of media including paint, light, books, text, and culinary ingredrients. Solo exhibitions in New York have included Portrait of the Cast of You in Eye (Dumbo Sky, 2013) and FOOT | KNOTS (Project Space Envelope, 2012). He has organized exhibitions for Undercurrent Projects (Books Without Words, 2014), Terrazzo Art Projects (Se Cayo Todo, 2014), and the Brooklyn-based Pop-Up initiative Smith&Jones.
