‘A man of immense energy going about school on his toes and with both hands being flexed at the wrist as though he was about to play for England at any moment ’

‘He inspired my choice of subjects and future career and much of my outlook on life.’

Chris Gilliam; Field 1972

Mor teza Mirghavameddin; Cour t 1984

‘He showed genuine compassion and care, without being overbearing or smothering; creating the impression that pupils were not just a number going through a process, but real people to be nur tured and developed.’

Creating life - changing oppor tunities

The Denys Carnill Award was set up in 2018 with the aim of making a life-changing difference to a talented and financially-deser ving young person, giving them the chance to flourish with a Dean Close education. Par ticularly intended to suppor t those pupils who can really contribute to school life, take par t and inspire those around them – just like Denys had

Denys was a ‘legend of the teaching profession’ and one of the inspirational figures of Dean Close. His kindness, generosity and passion are the characteristics that we promote through these special awards

Forever Grateful

Thanks to a lead donation from a ver y generous Old Decanian, one of the many whose life was changed by Denys, our first Denys Carnill Foundationer, Cherissa, was able to join Dean Close in September 2018.

“Being a Denys Carnill award holder has been an incredible experience. Even though I will be leaving Dean Close this year, I will not forget the things I have learnt over the past four years. The opportunities I have had, has given me many amazing memories and friends that I will remember for the rest of my life! I am so grateful for the people who give to the award. Thank you so much for giving me this time at Dean Close.”
