The Valencian Derby: A Change in the Winds? Publicado por Dean Burrier Sanchis
This October and November of this year may very well mark a change in the winds. Levante, "wind of the east" in Spanish", have turned the tables on their city rivals, Valencia CF. Since their last promotion in 2010, Levante have made things difficult for Valencia. There used to be a common saying amongst VCF fans, saying that they actually preferred to have Levante in First Division, because it meant there were 6 assured points for the taking. The reality has been quite different. Not once in the last three seasons has VCF been able to take all points from the city derbys, settling for two away wins and two home draws in the previous two seasons. Now, this season, Levante made the definitive smash hit against the goats with a 1-0 home win that sent Levante fans into a frenzy. However, Obafemi Martin's lone strike was not a lone strike so to speak. Indeed, Levante have shown over the course of the last two months that this city derby can be theirs for the claiming. Levante have won every single derby from the first team to the youth teams.

A golden strike from newcomer Obafemi Martins put Levante ahead in the scoreline for good in the October match. The buildup was a perfectly executed Levante counterattack. It was impossible to launch a quicker counter. Goalkeeper Gustavo Múnua launched the ball from his area to the Valencia half, with the Valencia players leaving a ton of space behind their line it was a race to reach the ball, a race that Ricardo Costa and his Valencia teammates had no chance of winning. Oba-Oba ran on to the ball chest-controlled away from his rivals and smashed a thunderstrike from near the penalty spot. Vicente Guaita barely saw it coming, and all he 3|Page

could do was hopelessly outstretch a hand in a late reflex to follow the trajectory of the ball, which had already entered his net. With the final whistle, el Ciutat erupted in jubilant applause. Something that had seemed so far from reach, indeed Levante had not beaten Valencia since the 2006-07 campaign when it defeated Valencia at home by a score of 4-2.

In the derby of "B" teams, Levante won a very thrilling match for the spectators. After initially losing 0-1 and 1-2, Levante managed to come from behind and win 4-2. Both teams are in the 3rd Division (2B in the Spanish Football heirarchy). Currently, Levante are in promotion positions (to 2nd Division) and ValenciaMestalla is in the relegation zone. The derby was extra sweet for Mossa, who after coming up in the Levante youth system decided to make the move to Mestalla last season, where he did not enjoy many opportunities. Now back with Levante, and this time in Division 2B, Mossa was able to put Levante back in the game.

Levante won a very even contest in which both teams faught valiently up to the very end. Jason's goal in the early going, allowed Levante to dictate terms, waiting to launch counters and defending conservatively.
Levante UD Women 1-0 Valencia Women (November 25th) The Levante Women have yet to dispute the city derby of the women's sides. The match is set tentatively for the 25th of November. Currently, the Levante women are in 5th place with a total of 21 points, while their counterparts are stuggling to stay above the relegation zone with just 9 points in 10 matches played. Let's hope the Levante Women can keep what seems to be a distinct change in the winds, putting Levante on top of the footballing world in Valencia. UPDATE: Levante won the derby 1-0. "This Is Orriols", a saying borrowed from Liverpool Football Club that is commonly used by Levante fans as not only a statement of pride of the neighborhood in Valencia where Levante U.D.'s stadium is located. Fans feel pride and a sense of strength in the defense of their home turf when they use the three word phrase. Levante players have made el Ciutat de Valencia a fortress, where rivals have to bleed to take any points away in their visits to Orriols. Just ask Real Madrid, who just recently needed to bleed (Quite literally, who hasn't heard about Cristiano's "broken" eyelid or seen pictures of his bloodied face?), battle to the extremes and, frankly, in a word cheat its way to a nailbiting late 12 win to scrape by with 3 points. We do not care to analyze the contoversial decision making of Muñiz Fernandez, the ref last Sunday night. Much more importantly, we would like to recognize just how far Levante have come. Levante have become such a fierce and feared opponent in La Liga to the point that Real Madrid, 32 Liga winners, had to wait three seasons under José Mourinho to win away against Levante, and was only able to do so under some very adverse weather conditions and with some very oportunistic help from the officials, receiving a penalty that probably should have been a free kick, and a late free kick (that produced Morata's winning goal) that certainly should have gone the other way as a foul seconds before against Obafemi Martins.

Orriols, once a ground was belittled, has become one of the toughest places to play in Spain. The way Madrid won is a credit to Levante, its growth, all that it has become as a team and a club. Allgranotas should be proud of what is being accomplished in such a short period of time, all coming together to chant in unison: THIS IS ORRIOLS "Next Year Levante-Liverpool!" It is no secret that many Levante fans admire Liverpool Football Club and its supporters, the originators of the "This Is..." phrase as well as the "Never Walk Alone" chant, that even played in Oviedo this past weekend. Given the tremendous European success of Liverpool, it would seem it had little in common with Levante. However, both are established in port cities and are known for their diehard supporters. What better example than when Levante qualified for Europe last season, one of the chants that fans belted out at the top of there lungs from the Four Stations Fountain celebrations was "Next year, Levante vs. Liverpool!" and indeed just a few years ago when Levante celebrated its 100 year anniversary, club president Quico Catalan travelled all the way to Liverpool just to see about the possibility of scheduling a 100 year celebratory preseason friendly with the Reds in the Ciutat de València stadium. Levante's invitation in the end was declined. Once Rafa Benitez was fired and a host of Spanish players were shipped out, the English club had little interest in visiting Spain. Who would have thought that just 3 seasons later, Levante conceivably could play Liverpool F.C., and not in some meaningless friendly, but instead on the european stage in a Europa League match? While Levante await the remote possibility of playing Liverpool in the future, they are certainly earning the right to use the famous phrase patented by Liverpool. So far this season, Real Madrid are the only team to leave Ciutat de València stadium with 3 points.

Player Focus: Míchel Publicado por Dean Burrier Sanchis Míchel, a young star in the making, has blasted off after only a few months at Levante. Despite his recent arrival and the club he departed, Míchel has entered the hearts of Levante fans at a speed faster than one of his patented long distance strikes. I will be the first to admit that I knew nothing about Míchel. In fact, I thought we had signed a different "Míchel", specifically Miguel Marcos Madera, also known as Míchel, who currently plays for Getafe. That "Míchel" is better known for being the son of a Real Madrid legend and little else. So, needless to say I was not that excited about the signing until I made the connection that that was not our Míchel. Once I found out, it was Míchel Herrero that we had signed, a young Valencian player, I began to feel a little bit better about the signing, though it was hard to imagine then that a player coming from the ranks of two of our most hated rivals, Valencia CF and Hércules CF, could ever really win us over. Míchel has definitely accomplished that feat even with La Liga not even having reached the 10 match mark.

Míchel posesses the combination of quickness, control, skill and long range shooting that we have not seen in some time in El Ciutat. He offers an excellent alternative to Barkero, a more deliberate and pass-first midfielder. At the age of 24, Míchel is making his big break this season with Levante. He shows the maturity, poise and confidence of an established player. He has no problem stepping up to snatch a penalty ball from the hands of a Greek god 7|Page

like Theofanis Gekas and convert the chance in a European match. Nor is taking the ball from the halfline, slipping past Málaga defenders before releasing an unstoppable screamer from his right foot. Hopes are high for Levante's own version of Meireles, as Los granotas will surely be expecting Valencia CF and other clubs to come knocking for this young player ready to leave his mark on La Liga. A Look at Míchel's Levante Goals (so far): Levante @ Málaga - Míchel marched through the Málaga defense after taking the ball near Levante's own half and launched a derrechazo (A right-foot screamer) to the top corner that was impossible to stop. The strike tied up the game at 1-1 before the eventual 2-1 final blow that handed Levante its first away loss. Levante vs. Espanyol - His cross that took a deflection off a defender was the definitive 3-2 goal in a crazy come from behind win in El Ciutat that sent the home fans into a frenzy of excitement. After losing 0-2, Levante scored 3 in the second half, with Míchel's goal, for added suspense, coming just before the final whistle. Levante @ Hannover (Europa League) - Converted a penalty in this group match that veteran Theofanis Gekas was ready to take himself. Despite putting Levante up 0-1, Hannover came from behind and won 2-1 Levante @ Getafe - In the 88th minute of a rather poor outing for Levante, devoid of any real offensive buildup, Míchel whipped away all the long faces with a strike from outside the area that caught Getafe keeper Moya well off his line. ¡Un golazo! Levante vs. Twente (Europa League) - Converted his second penalty in two consecutive Europa League matches, with the previous goal coming away at Hannover.

¿La cerveza más granota? Publicado por Dean Burrier Sanchis En esta edición de "Fuera de juego" analizamos a las marcas de cerveza que podrían aspirar al título, totalmente imaginado, de "la cerveza más granota".
¿La cerveza más granota? La cerveza y el deporte, o mejor dicho el aficionado del deporte, están muy ligados. En España y en EE.UU., basta con ver los anuncios de las marcas de cervezas. Desde Mahou a Bud Light todas las grandes marcas quieren reivindicar que la cerveza debe acompañar al espectador del deporte. Algunas de las estrellas de la LigaBBVA están patrocinados por marcas de cerveza y seguramente todos los clubes tienen una marca de cerveza como sponsor. Nos centramos, como siempre, en el caso de nuestro Levante UD, ¿Cuál sería la cerveza más granota? Los candidatos

Esta pregunta parece tener una respuesta fácil. Es cierto que tenemos cierta identificación con la marca Amstel, al menos hasta que lleguemos al frente de la cola en el descanso y nos acordamos de sus precios desorbitados en el Ciutat de València. Amstel, aún siendo una marca holandesa, tiene sus conexiones con la Comunitat Valenciana. Puede presumir de tener instalaciones cerca de la ciudad de Valencia y de llevar algunos años a la espalda de nuestro Levante. Desde luego, el siempre frecuentado muro de Facebook de Sin Tregua, legendario programa levantinista en la radio amplió el debate con la aparición de otros dos aspirantes. Un aficionado puso una foto de Kaiser, una cerveza de Austria, notando que el nombre también es el apodo del jugador levantinista Héctor Rodas (aka "El Kaiser del Cabanyal"). La otra aspirante, un candidato un poco más serio que Kaiser, es Martins una cerveza cuya nombre recuerda al delantero estrella del actual Levante, Obafemi Martins. Lo que también tiene a su favor esta marca es la curiosidad de compartir no tan sólo el color blaugrana con el Levante, sino también el mismo año de fundación, 1909. En el diseño de botella de Martins destacan el color blaugrana y los numerales "1909". Hace poco lo comentaron en el programa y Carlos Ayats incluso se atrevió a sacarse una foto al lado del jugador Martins con la cerveza Martins en la mano. Pero también desde aquí en Made In Orriols queremos contar la historia de otra cervecería que creemos que, aunque esté lejos de Valencia y no tiene ninguna vinculación formal con el Levante, tiene más de una razón para poder aspirar al título en cuestión. Hoppin' Frog Brewery (Akron, Ohio) Precisamente nos remontamos lejos del Ciutat a Ohio para encontrar esta cervecería misteriosa. Born In The USA, se encuentra Hoppin' Frog ("Rana que da saltos"), una pequeña cervecería que se está haciendo un nombre en el ámbito de la micro-cervecería. El curioso nombre es sólo el inicio de una larga lista de paralelismos con el Levante Unión Deportiva que le convierte a esta marca en serio aspirante al título. Una cervecería humilde pero grande Hoppin' Frog, como el Levante con los grandes clubes, empieza a dar guerra a las grandes marcas como Budweisser y Coors. Hoppin' Frog, como micro-cervecería (una marca pequeña; lo que básicamente serían las categorías inferiores de las cervecerías), forma parte de una tendencia esperanzador en Estados Unidos, país donde normalmente predominan las marcas gigantes. Ahora, algunas marcas pequeñas empiezan a triunfar gracias a la gente que vive en su inmediata localización geográfica. Una buena muestra de este cambio social de valorar más el producto local, se ve en el hecho de que, hace 3 décadas sólo habían 89 cervecerías en Estados Unidos entero, ahora mismo en 2012, hay más de 2.100, un crecimiento sin precedentes (véase el gráfico a la derecha). La gente humilde tiene unas ganas tremendas de asociarse y conocer a los demás en vez de ponerse en un podio aparte.
Al acercarse a Hoppin' Frog, uno se da cuenta enseguida que es una entidad humilde. Tiene una decena de empleados en una fábrica del tamaño de un restaurante y un parking que ni es pavimentada. En julio, nos acercamos a su fábrica en Akron, Ohio para almorzar y ver su local (y obviamente para comprar algunas botellas de sus cervezas). Poco después de sentarnos, un señor empezó a charlar con nosotros. Nos llevamos un buen rato charlando hasta que nos dimos cuenta de que era el dueño, fundador y maestro de toda la operación de Hoppin' Frog. Estos detalles sólo pasan con gente humilde, gente que tiene más ganas de asociarse entre los demás y conocer a todo en vez de ponerse en un podio o en una portada. Como nuestro Levante, también puede presumir de competir dignamente en competición internacional.
En Ohio, Hoppin' Frog lleva 4 años seguidos ganándose el título de mejor marca de cerveza ohionés. Más allá de nuestras fronteras, Hoppin' Frog se está ganando renombre en todo el mundo. 11 | P a g e 2012

Como el Levante, también puede presumir de competir con los mejores y ganar con dignidad en competiciones internacionales. En el World Beer Cup, Hoppin' Frog salió premiado con una medalla de oro. Además, lleva varios años seguidos siendo fijo en la lista de las 25 mejores cervecerías en el mundo, según RateBeer.com, llegando hasta el decimocuarto puesto en 2011. Las ranas no andan solas Las ranas salen en todos los sitios en Hoppin' Frog. Hay varios rincones dedicados a la que también es mascota levantinista empezando desde el parking. Además, sale, como logotipo de la cervecería en todas las cervezas de la compañía, el "Turbo Shandy" (arriba a la derecha) siendo nuestra preferida, con un sabor a verano. "No me gusta la cerveza, pero sí el Hoppin' Frog..." Y, por si era poca la semejanza con el Levante UD, Hoppin' Frog también tiene el gran don de convertir a gente desinteresada, en hinchas de por vida, incluso en contra de sus gustos personales. Como va un dicho que se oye con frecuencia dentro del levantinismo, "No me gusta el fútbol, sólo el Levante", a mi tío al que no le gusta para nada la cerveza, pues resulta que le encanta Hoppin' Frog. Resulta muy difícil opinar sin probar el sabor de cada uno de los candidatos aquí analizados pero por historia, nombre, anécdotas, conexiones levantinistas, o por vinculación al club o al levantinismo, ¿cuál es la cerveza más granota?

Like most football clubs, Levante are known for having a standard, classic kit by which their team and club are identified. However, Levante's kit tradition goes even farther than its well known blaugrana 1st kit. Indeed, Levante's kits tell a great deal about the club's 103 year history. The blaugrana blue and maroon kit pays homage to Gimnástic FC, who merged with Levante FC in 1939 to form the currentLevante U.D. Per club tradition, Levante's second kit invokes the history of Levante FC, the other half of Levante's storied tradition. This second kit is composed of black and white, traditionally in the form of vertical stripes. This year, in a new marketing push in part originated by Levante's new equipment supplier Kelme, Levante have opted for making their second kit a frog green for the 2012-13 season. It is hoped that fans will embrace the new color, symbolic of 13 | P a g e 2012

the club's mascot, the frogs. Levante have worn the new shirt in several Europa League (at Hannover) and Liga matches this season.
What caught many granotas by surprise (Made In Orriols' Editor included), was that there was actually a historical precedent for the Granota Green Kit, which many thought would be a first in Levante's history. On the contrary, it was in the 1977-78 season that Levante presumably first used a green kit. Pictured below is a pre-match photo from that campaign with the historic green kit. In this version the blaugrana strip runs vertical as opposed to the horizontal strip in the current season's green kit. Time will tell if the Green kit becomes a standard in the future, though it seems that Levante is no different from other clubs in the sense that the third kit is used for constant experimentation in the hopes of creating some sort of novelty shirt that fans will purchase. Just last campaign, Levante wore the senyera, the Valencian flag, in an adapted kit version in what turned out to be a huge commercial success for the club. The amount of senyera shirts sold last season will not go overlooked and surely an updated version will be used as the 3rd kit in the near future.

El primer aniversario de "Born In The USA" Hace un año y pico, precisamente en agosto de 2011 se fundó la peña "Born In The USA" y el 7 de septiembre de 2011 era reconocida por la Delegación de Penyas del Levante como la única peña oficial del Levante UD en el extranjero, aunque desde entonces la Delegación ha reconocido a varias peñas establecidas en países como Argentina, Rusia y Panamá. En ésta, básicamente la primera edición de "Made In Orriols", hemos querido repasar todos los momentos importantes de nuestro primer año de existencia. Agosto de 2011 - Fundación de "Born In The USA" La fundación de la peña surgió cuando yo, Dean Burrier Sanchis, empecé a recibir mensajes desde varios levantinistas que vivían en Estados Unidos o que sabían de levantinistas viviendo aquí. Entonces, me di cuenta de que era posible un viejo sueño mío de formar una peña aquí. Además, habían muchos amigos levantinistas que me contaron que tenía el deber de formar ya una peña en EE.UU. En agosto, avisé a la Delegación de Penyas de nuestras intenciones y empezamos el proceso para hacernos una peña oficial. El 7 de septiembre de 2011, nos inscribieron como peña oficial. Debutamos con un escudo, con rana y la bandera de Ohio incluídas. Además, en el escudo la rana lleva una guitarra, con dos motivos por lo menos. El primer motivo era otra conexión con mi tierra ohionés, somos el país donde nació el "Rock n Roll", un género de música ya bastante popular en EE.UU. y en el mundo. La guitarra es un símbolo del género y también de la sala de fama del género, que tiene su sede precisamente en Cleveland, Ohio. En octubre de 2011, mi novia y yo recibimos la visita de Manolo López y su esposa Anabel López, levantinistas y miembros de la peña Amunt Granotes. Nos trajeron todo tipo de regalos levantinistas, historias de levantinismo y sobre todo nos impresionó con su personalidad muy acogedora. Yo disfruté muchísimo porque Manolo y su esposa eran los primeros levantinistas que conocí en persona. Por eso, era una experiencia inolvidable. Por fin, pude hablar con alguien sobre el Levante y compartir esa pasión por el club. Octubre de 2012 – Líderes de La Liga y salimos en el New York Times El Levante estaba en los focos de todas las cámaras en octubre del año pasado. Habíamos logrado el liderato de La Liga y los medios de comunicación del mundo se interesaron por la historia del club modesto haciéndose un nombre. La noticia llegó a tal magnitud que el periódico de más renombre el EE.UU., el New York Times, envío un periodista a Valencia a investigar y conocer el club. Su artículo publicado sale a la izquierda y, más que una anécdota, representa en muchos sentidos un hito histórico, demostrando hasta donde podemos llegar partiendo desde la humildad y el trabajo. Febrero-Marzo de 2012 - Viaje a Valencia Dean Burrier Sanchis, el líder de la peña estadounidense, visitó a la ciudad de Valencia y presenció los partidos del Levante en casa contra el Rayo Vallecano y el Real Betis, y también viajó fuera a Cornellà para ver la victoria ante el Espanyol. En el partido ante el Betis, el logotipo de la peña Born In The USA estuvo en el video marcador del Ciutat de València aquel 5 de marzo de 2012. Disfrutó de una reunión con la peña AmuntGranotes en Sueca. Presenció un partido del Levante Femenino. Hubo cierta repercusión mediática para Dean y la peña durante la visita. SuperDeporte, Levante-EMV y en la radio oficial del Levante. Damos las gracias a todas las personas que hicieron que este viaje fuera tan memorable y tan especial.

Iniciativas para nuestro segundo año 2012-13 "Made In Orriols" Esta web se ha hecho realidad. Desde aquí intentamos publicar contenido relevante y único sobre el Levante tanto en inglés como en castellano para avanzar el levantinismo un poco más por el mundo y hacernos partícipes del levantinismo activo aun desde lejos de Valencia. Esta web será el nuevo gran proyecto de la peña que esperamos que cumple muchos años. 50º aniversario del 1º ascenso a Primera - Con nuestros medios y recursos, que aunque sean pocos, vamos a intentar darle el reconocimiento a este aniversario tan importante en la historia del levantinismo. En nuestra web, pediremos la colaboración de algunos testigos de aquel mítico 2 de junio de 1963 pero además, buscaremos la mejor forma posible de conmemorar este aniversario el próximo 2 de junio de 2013 mediante diversos actos y reuniones. Informaremos aquí cuando finalizamos los detalles. También les agradecemos su apoyo y interés, no sólo hoy sino en en sus programas la semana pasada también, por los afectados del huracán Sandy que ha dejado destrozado algunas partes del este de los Estados Unidos, en especial Nueva York y Nuevo Jersey se vieron más afectados. Informe: Huracán Sandy y los afectados de nuestra peña Publicado por Dean Burrier Sanchis
Hace unas semanas, precisamente al final de octubre, Sandy, un huracán de categoría histórica destruyó parte del este de Estados Unidos, sobre todo a los estados de Nueva York y Nuevo Jersey. Hemos querido sacar un reportaje sobre el huracán y los afectados de nuestra peña. Tres miembros de la Peña "Born In The USA" viven en Nueva York y se encuentran bien ahora, aunque sí es cierto que pasaron por un momento complicado y seguramente con mucho miedo ante la destrucción brutal del huracán. Uno de ellos, César Diaz, nos ha mandado estas fotos de la destrucción de Sandy.
