“There is no passion to be found in a life that is less than the one you are capable of living. --Nelson Mandela A midwest girl at heart, I graduated from Iowa State Univeristy with a degree in interior design. My passion for design led me to the coast and back where I currently reside and design in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Growing up in an artistic family, I knew I was destined for design at a young age. My education and love for all things creative has taken me to Europe many times where I have developed an open mind and inspired eye. I aspire to be a part of something great. My exposure to residential design has allowed me to have a hands-on design experience and work independently. I look forward to being an integral part of a company I can grow with, contribute to, and refine my technical design skills. Design provides the opportunity to enhance the lives of others and I plan to do just that, giving extreme attention to detail every step of the way.

A large part of my responsibility at Susan Hoffman Interior Designs is to create and update the drawings for all projects using AutoCAD. In the following pages you will find a compilation of floor plans, elevations and electrical plans from selected projects. Under the direction of Susan Hoffman, I am also directly involved in the selection and ordering of materials, finishes and furnishings. All designs by Susan Hoffman, AutoCAD by Deanna Fritz.

healthcare Challenge:

Design an assisted living facility located in the developing area of Panama Pacifico. Comply with all ADA codes and requirements and consider the climate of Panama. Cater to the high expectations of today’s elderly generation.

Concept:

Our space will invigorate, stimulate, and revive its residents while staying mindful of natural rains, winds, and sunlight. A formula was developed, inspired by the home of Steve Wynn, which takes special consideration of the aging eye. It is as follows: Vibrant colored walls + fabrics with large, high contrast prints + clean neutral floor and ceiling planes.

restaurant Challenge:

With an assigned site located in Soho, NYC, design a space of your choice that would service the community. I chose to design a restaurant and bar.

Concept:

“Moroccan Fantasy Explore my fascination of Moroccan design. Experiment with the architectural elements and the geometries found in that culture. My goal was to create a modern escape that would transport guests to another culture. This was an independent project.

retail Challenge:

Design a creative showroom that will serve as the European flagship store for West Elm, to be located in Rome, Italy. Attention to the Italian showroom experience, Italian shopping behavior, and European technical needs is required. The project involved international correspondence as we were partnered with our classmates in the United States.

Concept:

“Abstract Nest, Resting Among the Forest The networking of materials in the space creates the feeling of a raw, textured forest. The metaphor between a nest and a home is used throughout the showroom.

commercial Challenge:

Design an office space for PurFoods, in Des Moines, Iowa. Collaborate with the professional architects and interior designers who will bring the actual project to completion. Analyze the needs and adjacencies of all departments and space plan to those needs.

Concept: “Like a diamond in the rough” A geode is like an office space should be. No two geodes are the same. At the heart of a geode are the ”gems” and surrounding the gems are a beautiful, organic core, which is encased in a rough shell. In our office space for PurFoods we envisioned a unique, engaging environment. The “gems” at the center of our design are the employees, which the design revolves around. Surrounding the gems is our fluid, organic design, which softens the modern, industrial interior shell.

BIRD’S EYE VIEW

Model: We constructed a stylized model, including furniture to give the client a tangible view of the space. We used a laser cutter and various materials to replicate the real materials to scale. The model was built at a 1/8”-1’ scale.

44

hospitality Challenge:

Work together with architecture and landscape architecture students to design a luxury hotel and all of its amenities located in South Beach, Miami. The site of the hotel is situated between The W South Beach and the Setai.

Concept:

“Free Verse Poetry” Free verse poetry does not follow a set of constraints. It flows freely, building each word on to the next to form a work of art. We have translated free verse into free form to create a dynamic continuum of spaces.

Overall Objectives:

-- Create a space that enables and promotes social interaction -- Fill the space with objects that allow for interpretive use -- Challenge the idea of what a “threshold” is

51

DESK/BAR - PASSIVE

Our design for the King Suite developed on the premise of active space versus passive space. On one side of the room are the dynamic curves and amoeba-like forms that make up the furniture. This is the side of the room that is actively used, particularly for social activity. On the opposite wall is the contrasting, passive side of the room. All things on this side of the room are angular and regular. This side of the room can be closed off with a series of panels. These panels are highly reflective to reinforce the dynamic part of the room and send the message of encouraging social activity.

53

PASSIVE ACTIVE

KING SUITE FLOOR PLAN The idea of active versus passive continued to develop in the larger suites and public spaces. In the guest rooms we kept the same principles and continued to develop them according to the size and grandeur of the room. In the public spaces we developed these active and passive principles translated to private and public, respectively. The more access the guests and community had to the space, the more dynamic it was. You will see this demonstrated in the restaurants we designed.
