D E T A I L I N G STRATEGIES 1 [e-Learning]: Sarking paper

Apron flashing

Box Gutter

As seen above, many compenents are required in order to ensure a building is airtight and watertight.

Dealing with water and moisture: a)

b)

* Tanking = rubber membrane to prevent the intrusion of ground water * Agricultural drain that is surrounded by loose agrigate in order to ensure ground water is absorbed and directed to drain * Eaves gutters and downpipes to ensure water does not rest on the roof of the structure * Flashing also aids in protecting joins and cracks against water

Preventing water penetrating a building:

* Remove openings * Keep water away from openings * Neutralise forces that move water through the openings (divert water flow)

Dealing with heat: --> Heat is CONDUCTED through the building envelope --> Building elements are subject to RADIANT HEAT sources (sun) --> THERMAL MASS is used to regulate the flow of heat

* Thermal Insulation

* Thermal Breaks

* Double glazed windows

* Shading systems (external)

Paints:

D E T A I L I N G plastics: - can only be STRATEGIES 1 Thermosetting moulded once [e-Learning]:

* Laminex * Polystyrene

Rubber: --> Natural Rubber * Seals * Gaskets & control joints * Flooring * Insulation * Hosing & piping --> Artificial (synthetic) Rubber * EPDM - used for gaskets & joints * Neoprene - control joints * Silicone - seals

Components:

* Binder * Diluent * Pigment

Types and uses: * Water-based - water soluble - More common today * Oil-based - cannot be cleaned w water (requires TERPENTINE) - high gloss finish Archs, domes & shells:

Elastomers:

* EPDM * Neoprene * Silicone

Archway: * curved structures to span an opening

Thermoplastics:

* * * *

Polethelyne Perspex, acrilic PVC, vinyl Polycarbonate

Dome: * meridional forces along a vertical section are always in compression * hoop forces (horizontal) are compressive in upper portion of dome and tensile in the lower zone

Transfer beams: “used when columns on two floors do not allign” * Ground floor * Level 7 (transition level)

Atrium * * level *

Design: Pre-cast concrete slabs Vary in shape between each Organic form

[Peter Mac’s Cancer Centre]: Demolition and excavation of site: * 3 level underground carpark * B1 consists of 9 bunkers for radiation treatment

Bondek as sacrificial support:

Transfer beam

Columns

Concrete slabs: * Poured in-situ Metal stud framing: * Blue metal decks that span b/w * Hole in studs for pipes and beams electricals * Tension cables in concrete * timber noggings for wall fix - initial stress after 1 tures (shelving units etc.) day - final stress 3 days after

Bunker walls:

* 2m thick floor and walls * mixture of pre-cast and in-situ concrete Steel sheet

in-situ concrete

[Peter Mac’s Cancer Centre]:

Arrangment of bunkers:

Pressure to create air flow:

* zig-zag coridors to reduce spread of radiation due to there being no straight lines of travel * Located on B1 which is below ground, again, to reduce the likelihood of radiation spread.

Bunker

Pre-cast

* Ensures that bacteria and any other infection is contained * Whoistic system that starts in the utensils room, then flowing into the operation room, then the observation theatres to the coridors and to the exit.

Gutter: - “a shallow trough fixed beneath the edge of a roof carrying off rainwater”

Flashing: - “sheet metal used to reinforce and weatherproof the joints and angles of a roof”

Parapet: - “a low protective wall along the edge of a roof, bridge, or balcony”

Insulation: - “Insulation is the process of keeping heat, sound, or electricity from spreading, of which is achieved through a variety of materials

[Key Terms]: Drip:

Vapour Barrier: - “any material used for damp proofing, usually a plastic or foil sheet, that resists the diffusion of moisture through wall, ceiling and floor assemblies”

Downpipe: - “a pipe to carry rainwater from a roof to a drain or to ground level” PEC: - “Pressure Equalisation Chamber

Wall

Sealant: - “material used for sealing something so as to make it airtight or watertight”
