1/ Clinic Design Project Overview Dr. Janice Rockefeller is working with the Health Resources and Service Administration (HRSA) to open a small family medical practice in Little River County, Arkansas. Much of this rural area has been designated by HRSA as a Medically Underserved Area and Population (MUA/P). The town of Winthrop has agreed to allow the small medical firm to use half of the lower portion of the old elementary school, now converted to a museum, at 530 Spring Street. The school is listed on the Arkansas list of Historic Places.

7

Building Location: 530 Spring St, Winthrop, AR. This building is being nominated to the Arkansas Register of Historic places with local significance with the educational history of the town. This building is about 107 yrs old and has the high ceiling of 11 ft. Since it is historic building the designer could not change any of the windows or exterior walls.

Design Goal

Winthrop is rural town of Arkansas, United States. Summers are warm and humid and Winters are mild but occasionally register temperatures below freezing. The community was a backdrop for the Winthrop Rockefeller election campaigns in the 1960s.

Population is 180. Resident age 50yrs, 57% females, 43% males. Their income is around $60,362. Income source : Agriculture, forestry, fishing & hunting, paper industry, and construction management services

For many people it could be the first visit to this clinic, so I will use my design to encourage people living in this area to care more about their own health and enjoy a calm and easy medical experience.

Concept /Material board

My design concept is the Mountain Mist. Gentle moisture makes leafs even greener. A relaxed, calm environment combined with the power of the green color can make the patient feel at ease, melt away stress and encourage the healing process.

Project 1 Concept/ Mood board

11

Mo Wang Selected Design Work

To achieve a calm and peaceful mood the material choices are based on the earthy color tone and different variations of the natural textures, such as oakwood, stone and soft-linen. Using translucent glass to mimic the feeling of being in the mist.

2/ Urban Hotel Design Project Overview Client HGI has purchased a property in the center of downtown Oakland, California. This hotel is an extended stay model. Target executive business guests who are visiting Oakland for extended periods of time. The guestrooms are designed as second home condominium units rather than conventional hotel rooms. A combination of studio and 1 bedroom units will be provided, each with its own kitchen. It will have eight stories, with the public spaces located primarily on the first and second floors, including an interior courtyard on the first level. Floors 3-8 provide 60 guest rooms, 10 on each floor. In addition, the building will have two basement levels for parking.

21

22

Rendering of The Waiting Area The expansive view allows guests to survey the hotel environment and wait for car rides indoors next to a cozy fireplace. Next I describe the conception of the design of the floor plan, the development of the concept and the choice of the materials for this project. 23

Oakland is a culturally rich and diverse city, and the uptown neighborhood is a happening place with the attraction of the bold, loud graffiti art and the street music in stark contrast to the peacefulness of the marine lifestyle by the Jack London Square. The challenge here is to combine the exciting street art with a high-end hotel into one harmonious and holistic design.

Design Opportunities •2 separate parts allow different function zone. •All guest rooms have windows and either courtyard or street views. •The street view is outstanding. •Right next to a busy street to attract clients. •Enough outdoor places. Design Challenges •How to connect 2 separate parts of this building. •Privacy and noise issue of the guest room by the courtyard or Street. •Safety issue. •Not a lot of nonstructural walls to change. •Courtyard being higher than the ground level.

Project 2

The Bay Area is a technology hub. Therefore I envision the overall layout of this hotel in Oakland as a way to merge the physical and digital spaces Specifically, I plan to immerse the visitors into a Glitching experience bridging the real and fantasy worlds. To achieve this goal I merge spaces using different materials, colors and pixel geometries.

Mo Wang Selected Design Work

I devise the lobby into four functional zones: 1/reception desk, 2/stuff office, 3/ waiting area and 4/gift shop. The manager’s office is right behind the reception desk hidden by a sliding door. This is an effective way to connect these two spaces. The office can also function as luggage storage. The spacious waiting area is next to the window, making it convenient for visitors to check on their Uber rides. The gift shop is next the waiting area, facilitating the purchase of hotel souvenirs.

Open Kitchen Design The kitchen is the center of the family heart, but when you travel to a new place you do not want to spend time cleaning it before guests arrive, so I designed a kitchen cover. The color palette, elements and material use match the rest of the hotel design.

3/ Refugee Community Center Design

48

Project Overview Create a community center in the City of Portland that will serve the new refugee population coming to the city from different countries around the world. Their wish is to create a center that will welcome new immigrants and provide them with social services, education, temporary housing, and community connection as they journey toward self-sufficiency and adjust to life in a new city.

The community center’s space will include a lobb café, community room, social service offices, classrooms, and computer lab. Each of the four residential units will have the same design and include a living area, dining room, kitchen, bathroom, laundry, and three bedrooms.

Concept Looking at the natural beauty of heaven caves bathed with light bringing life with it. It gives me the feeling of safety and hope. The design of this refugee center is guided by the concept of Light of a Heaven Cave able to create a welcoming, sheltered atmosphere to encourage the process of learning leading to a bright future.

This working studio 3 levels (about 24 feet tall) high with open ceiling. This space includes a basement kitchen, a 2 feet elevated indoor garden above the basement level, such that the plants could grow as tall as the second level.

Henri Rousseau Art studio design

When people stay in the basement they will feel they are actually inside one of his paintings, humbled by the nature around them. The first floor is the entrance and it is also a partition level that functions as living room/ meeting room (8 feet high). In the second floor there is also a partition level functioning as a working space with a round window. I chose to make the window round in the working space because in Rousseau’s paintings he likes to use round objects to represent either a sun or a moon.

Inspired by Henri Rousseau’s unique painting style combining dream and reality, this art studio is patterned after his painting “Dream”. The studio space takes the visitor from a traditional French living room at the front door to a different time and space connected by the stairs. The tall roof and the indoor garden are designed to give the illusion of entering one of Henri Rousseau’s paintings.

Co-Living Rendering Starcity is the co-living company whose focus is to solve the rental shortage for the middle and lower income classes. The goal is to make a nice, high-quality, well designed place affordable in the Bay Area. I was honored to help the interior designer with their project in Tenderloin, San Francisco. The building was a Turkish bathhouse that has been renovated with 58 units across 5 floors, with a lounge and a kitchen on every floor. This space is now renting to the public.
