Gold Award Girl Scout
Rachel S. Community V
“Why Does It Snow in San Antonio”
Rachel focused her project on an issue she’s passionate about: climate change and conveying its importance—including how to mitigate it—to young learners. She decided to approach the topic starting at home, writing and publishing a picture book, “Why Does It Snow in San Antonio,” for elementary school students. The book can be found at the Hardy Oaks Elementary School Library, at the Twig Book Shop, and on Amazon.com. Rachel is a junior in high school. Well done, Rachel!
Volunteer Spotlight
Chrystal Biediger, co-leader of Troop 980
Congratulations to Chrystal Biediger, co-leader of Troop 980, for receiving a 2022 volunteer award! Chrystal has been described by her peers as one of the most selfless and patient people they know, going above and beyond what’s called of her and always putting her girls first. She provides fun, educational, and quality Girl Scout programming that keeps girls engaged and coming back—evident by the fact that Troop 980 has more than 50 girls! Chrystal is also involved in planning activities for Community J and last year volunteered to be a Volunteer Tool Kit trainer for the council. Well done, Chrystal!
Girl Scout Patch Partner
Our Patch Partner Programs are unique and are written thinking of our future leaders: our girls. These programs provide the opportunity to explore topics beyond those in the handbooks and other Girl Scouts of the USA resources.
Girl Scout programs recognize that physical health, emotional health, and self-esteem are all connected. To further support the “whole girl,” H-E-B’s Health & Wellness Initiative gives girls the skills they need to keep their bodies healthy, their minds engaged, and their spirits alive.
By building strong, healthy bodies and learning problem-solving techniques, girls gain the self-confidence and skills needed to develop healthy relationships in which they give and receive the respect and trust every child seeks.
You can learn more and find grade booklets for the program by scanning the QR code.
Patch Partners at Second Saturdays
Come by the Sally Cheever Girl Scout Leadership Center on Second Saturdays beginning in September to participate in one of our Patch Partner programs and earn a patch!

Day of the Girl
S.A. Celebrates Five Years
Join us Sunday, October 8, at Hemisfair’s Yanaguana Garden as we celebrate what makes you special at the fifth annual Day of the Girl SA. This year’s theme: “Yo soy una niña. What’s your superpower?”
Being a girl is a superpower all on its own, but girls have more than one. Is it your courage? Your kindness? Your love of animals? There’s no wrong answer!
Enjoy a day filled with hands-on fun that focuses on the ways each girl is unique and can make a difference in the world, including activities about the annual solar eclipse taking place Saturday, Oct. 14. We’ll have food trucks, girl DJs, a photobooth, and plenty more to keep the whole family engaged.
Put on your cape and show everyone what makes you awesome!
Learn more and RSVP today. www.dayofthegirlsa.org
Join Our PR Team
Would you like to represent the council in a visible way? Then we’d love to have you join our PR Team!
Overseen by the Marketing and Communications Department, girls on the PR Team have opportunities to participate in media appearances (TV, print/digital, radio), event participation (flag ceremonies, to represent the council, to be on a panel, etc.), photoshoots, and more. We’re also looking for girls to help represent us during our Centennial Celebration events in 2024.
Girls of all ages (we’re especially looking for Daisies, Brownies, and Juniors) must complete an application and interview process before joining the team.
Applications for the MY24 year open August 8. Learn more and apply today!
Outside Awaits!
You don’t need access to a national park or the woods to enjoy the outdoors! So put yourself out there with us and participate in our Girl Scouts Love the Outdoors Challenge.
Spending at least 120 minutes a week in nature is associated with good health and wellbeing, even if you spend that time becoming a rockstar at rock climbing or making a splash in the puddles around your neighborhood.
Download our free activity sheet to see what’s possible right outside your own front door today! You also can purchase a special Girl Scouts Love the Outdoors patch.
