Sports Evangelism Today Magazine Christ First, Sports second

Dear Reader, Thank you for purchasing this magazine. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I did writing it. My name is Eli Grubke and I have been playing sports all my life. I have played lots of different sports--my personal favorite being baseball. Also, I am a strong believer that God loves to work through sports. I know talking to people about Christ is not always easy but it needs to be done and talking about it while doing something you love makes it much easier. I chose for this magazine to be about sports evangelism because I love sports and I think that they are a great way to reach people with the message of Christ. I hope you learn somethings in this magazine and have a few laughs, too. I certainly did when creating it. But more importantly, I want you to realize that there are people out there who play sports and do not know Christ as their Lord and Savior. I hope you feel the Holy Spirit telling you to talk to somebody you know. Thanks for reading -Eli Grubke

Coach Josh Erd 10/15/17 10:15am I interviewed Coach Josh Erd because he is a professional. He works for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Q: How long have you been doing sports evangelism? A:12 years Q: What is the most important thing you’ve learned about sports evangelism? A: That everybody is different. It’s important to treat people well. How you take care of them and make them feel valued is very important. Q:Who was your role model as a child? A: My dad was a role model and my youth pastors, Louie Weber and Rex Stump. Q:What is the most rewarding part of sports evangelism? A: Being able to see some of the fruits. You don’t always get to see it. But being able to see people who don’t know the Lord and all of a sudden they get it! And you watch their eyes light up! That’s what I love. Q:What made you want to do sports evangelism? A: I had a call from God I had all these doors open up for me to get into sports evangelism. It was one of those times where you

Q: On a scale of 1 to 10, how much do you enjoy doing sports evangelism? :

A:10! Q:Did things go well the first time you did sports evangelism? A: No...not at all. I had a lot of upset people because I did not know what I was doing. It really wasn’t the ministry part of it. It was the day to day operations of making everything happen. Q: What sports have you done sports evangelism through? A: Softball, basketball, track and field, cross country, soccer, baseball, lacrosse, sports performance which is weight lifting. Q: What is your favorite bible verse? A: Joshua 1:9. Q: Was there an experience in your child hood that prepared you for the work you do today? A: Yes, I was a sports junkie I played everything all the time. My mom said if goat herding was on ESPN I’d watch it. Q: What is your advice to a young person regarding your work? A: Make sure you feel called to do it, because it’s not always easy. It’s not always glamorous. You don’t always get to win. You don’t always have the positive things that you see. There is a lot of negative it, as well. You have to be able to work through that and understand that God is in control.

...understand that God is in control.

Evangelistic Heroes: An amazing story of two great athletes and great men

Billy Sunday was born on November 10, 1862 in Ames, Iowa to a single mother. His father had died in the Civil War. When he was 10 years old his mother sent him and his brother to an orphanage because she was too pour to take care of them. He left the orphanage when he was 14 went to Nevada, Iowa where he worked odd jobs until he was 18. He got a job being a fireman in Marshalltown and so he got to play on their baseball team. A man who was from Marshalltown who played for the Chicago white stockings heard about Billy and he told his manager and he offered Billy a chance to play on the team so In 1883 he signed to be on the Chicago White Stockings. One Sunday afternoon, in 1886, he was in the town with some friends. He heard a gospel team sing a song he remembered from his childhood so he decided to stay and listen and then he followed the evangelists back to their church and he started attending regularly. He began attending church and he decided to become a Christian. He gave up drinking and gambling. He spoke at YMCA and churches, but he didn’t think he was good at it. In 1886, at church, he met Nell Tomson and, in 1888, he married her. In 1891, Billy quit baseball and to work at the YMCA. The YMCA was not yet a gym (club) it was a Christian evangelism outreach. He did a little ministry and preaching there and, in 1893, he became the assistant to Wilbur Chapman, one of the best-known evangelists in the USA at that time. He worked as his advance man which means he went to a town ahead of Wilbur and set up prayer groups and choirs he helped set up tents if they were needed to preach in and maybe did a little preaching himself .

BILLY Sunday

In 1890, when Chapman quit doing evangelism, Billy started doing it on his own. He was known for his energetic delivery of his sermons. He was known for running up and down the stage shadow boxing the devil and sliding into imaginary bases. He became America’s best-known evangelist. He traveled all over America preaching and gaining many converts. After World War I, his popularity started to decline and , in 1932, his daughter died and, in 1993, one of his sons committed suicide. In 1935, he had a heart attack and on November 6, 1935, at 72 years old, he went home to be with the Lord. He is buried at Forest Park Cemetery in Forest Park, Illinois. He had an impact with his preaching on thousands of people and many came to the Lord through Him. He preached against alcohol frequently and he likely played a significant role in the 18th amendment for prohibition of alcohol. Eric Liddle was born on January 16, 1902 in Taijin, China where his parents were missionaries. He lived in China until he was 5 years old then he went to a boarding school in London. He played and was good at lots of sports at school. In 1920, he went to University of Edenborough. He ran track and played rugby for the university. In 1924, he went to the Paris Olympics where he refused to run on a Sunday because he wanted to honor the Sabbath and keep it holy in the 100-meter race. Instead, he ran the 400-meter race on a different day. And he won. He also ran other non-Olympic events and excelled in almost every event he participated in. In 1925, he was a teacher at the Anglo-Chinese College. In 1932, he married turned to China as a missionary. He was a teacher at the Anglo-Chinese College. In

Eric Liddle

1932, he married Florence MacKenzie and they had three daughters. When the Japanese invaded China in World War II. Eric was sent to an internment camp. He was popular with everyone. Everyone liked him. On Feb, 21, 1945 at age forty-three, Eric Liddle died of a brain tumor. He is buried at the internment camp in China. He had a huge impact on China and the whole world. Everywhere he went he helped people spiritually and physically.

Like Billy Sunday and Eric Liddle , you... Yes, you can be a sports evangelist. Don’t worry. You don’t have to win gold medals to witness to others. All it takes is to talk to people. Not only when you’re playing sports but you should do it every chance you get. I know it’s hard but god tells us to do it so we should. everybody can do something. Everybody knows somebody who does not know Christ so just talk to them about it.

“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
