Hi I would like to thank all the businesses that have supported this Sandy Local guide with advertising, also the Sandy Tourist Board and Sandy Town Council who have helped put this guide together. One of the purposes of this Sandy Local guide is to encourage local people to use the advertisers in this guide. It was often the case in the past that people do not use local services and businesses on their doorstep, but due to the rising cost of transportation that trend is hopefully changing, because without customers, all businesses close or move to other towns. A thriving town with plenty of active businesses enhances a community, and can create local pride in the town. I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a Happy Christmas and a Prosperous New Year for 2014. I look forward to your support. Kind regards, Barbara

SANDY
Tourist Information Centre
Sandy Tourist Information Centre is a service of Sandy Town Council. The Town Council took over provision of a Tourist Information service from the then MidBedfordshire District Council in 2006.The Centre welcomes visitors to Sandy and our experienced tourism advisors also provide information and services for our residents. The Centre holds brochures which cover the whole of Great Britain - with its varied and beautiful landscape and wonderful buildings. We also hold a large range of leaflets relating to local and national attractions, local walks, cycle routes, etc. There is a very great deal of interest in local walks in the beautiful countryside surrounding Sandy. The Tourist Information Centre has a large range of walking leaflets available including walks around Sandy and the other nearby towns and delightful villages. In recent years the Tourist information centre has written two Walk leaflets. One commemorates local naval hero, Captain Sir William Peel, who resided at the Swiss Cottage
6
(now the RSPB Gatehouse). Peel built his own railway between Sandy and Potton and during his career he saw action in the Crimean War, where he was awarded the Victoria Cross and in the Indian Mutiny where he died. The Walk takes you to the buildings and areas of Sandy relating to the gallant Captain. The second Walk leaflet waswritten to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of Her Majesty The Queen, and is called the Jubilee Walks leaflet. This illustrated leaflet contains six Walks around Sandy and its beautiful countryside. There is one Walk for each decade of the Queen’s reign. We have a selection of local items that would make that ideal and unique gift or souvenir, such as a Sandy tea towel with line drawings of various views of the town and a mug celebrating Sandy’s market gardening heritage. We also sell Sandy dishes, Sandy thimbles, Sandy notelets, Sandy pens and pen pots. We also sell locally produced honey, jams marmalades and chutneys. We sell local Ordnance Survey Maps and County Street Maps, together with Walking and Cycling booklets. We have a stock of non-fiction books about the county or about famous local residents such as Dan Albone. For those who enjoy looking at books with old photographs of the locality we have the ‘Pictorial memories of Sandy’ books and books in the ‘Yesterday’s Bedfordshire’ series. We sell a number of books which have been published about Tempsford and the SOE. There is a great deal of interest in RAF Tempsford, the wartime secret airfield, as is shown by the number of visitors we get to the Centre, both locally, nationally and internationally enquiring about this historic place. The three main towns of east Bedfordshire (Sandy, Biggleswade and Potton) are captured in the DVD ‘Three Market Towns’. A wonderful souvenir or gift. Why not give a Theatre Token as a unique gift – it allows the receiver to choose from over 240 theatres nationwide, including several local ones and those in London’s West End. These gift vouchers can be used to see Plays,

As the long nights of winter draw in, we can once again look back at another exciting and eventful year at The Lodge. Firstly our wildlife; the ravens bred again for the second year raising three young, and are regularly seen or heard across the site and in the local area. Their deep ‘cronk’ ‘cronk’ call is a welcome fixture of the reserve now. They have even been seen foraging on the ground directly outside the hide on occasions. Our key target species, woodlark and nightjar, were both seen on the new heath this year, but there were no breeding attempts that we are aware of.The heath is improving year on year, it can surely only be a matter of time before at least one of these scarce birds grace the reserve and raise their young here! Hobbies, a smart summer migrant falcon also bred on the new heath, raising two young and giving stunning views as they dived across the heath catching dragonflies, which they eat on the wing. A stunning great grey shrike appeared in mid- October. These migrant birds can overwinter in a location throughout the winter months, so we may be very lucky to have this bird around for a few months.Equally, it could have flown off as I write this article! We added several new events to our programme this year. One of the best was the Bedford river cruise on the recently restored John Bunyan boat. This is run by the B&MK charity to promote the planned canal link between Bedford and Milton Keynes. We are already planning new dates for boat trips in 2014 and we’d love to see you aboard to explore the river and discover its wildlife.
The work to improve the entrance and create a larger visitor reception building started at the end of summer and will be finished by the year end - by the spring we will also have new signage along the drive to further improve the site for our visitors. We are currently recruiting and starting a new group of volunteers to join our existing team in welcoming the many people who visit from across the country. If you are interested in helping us, please contact our Volunteer Co-ordinator Val Thompson; valerie.thompson@rspb.org.uk. Perhaps you are planning a gardening project in 2014? Check out the new Give Nature a Home section of the RSPB web site that has loads of ideas and advice on how to encourage wildlife into your garden. http://homes.rspb.org.uk/ I wish you a very happy festive season and a healthy and prosperous New Year. The RSPB Lodge reserve is open every day of the week, from dawn to dusk, for everyone to enjoy and there are plenty of organised events: just ring to book. Entry is included in the car-parking fee £4 a car for non-members, free if you are members or just visiting the shop. The shop (01767 680541) is open every day (9am5pm and 10am-5pm weekends and Bank Holidays) and has everything for people who love nature. Our website; www.rspb.org.uk/thelodge is the place to look for all of the events you can enjoy here at RSPB The Lodge this winter. The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) is a registered charity. In England and Wales, no: 207076.In Scotland, no: SC037654.

SANDY TOURIST INFORMATION CENTRE
Walkers are welcome status and local walks Sandy acquired Walkers are Welcome accreditation during the summer of 2012 and was the first town in Bedfordshire achieve this status. Sandy is proud to lead the way locally in joining and promoting this important community led scheme which incorporates 100 towns in Great Britain. Sandy Town Council, Central Bedfordshire Council, local Sandy businesses, residents and other agencies such as the RSPB campaigned for Walkers are Welcome status because Sandy is a great place for visitors of all ages and abilities to enjoy walking in varied and beautiful terrain. Together the community is working to ensure footpaths and facilities for walkers are maintained in good condition benefiting local people as well as visitors. Throughout the year the Tourist Information Centre leads Guided Walks and in 2013 we led seven walks throughout the year including walks around the villages of Waresley and Old Warden. As part of the Bedfordshire Walking Festival we led a ‘Food and River Walk’ between Sandy and Beeston in which walkers were able to partake of the local delicacy- a Bedfordshire Clanger. We have arranged a Winter Walk to take place on 6th January in 2014 called ‘A New Year Walk in the Grounds and Gardens of The Lodge, Sandy. This Walk will take us amongst the open grasslands, heathlands and the pine, oak and birch woodlands of The Lodge (RSPB - HQ). We will walk through some of these beautiful grounds leading to and surrounding the Elizabethan style
mansion. We will also look at the gardens of the house which were laid out with exotic trees and shrubs when the house was built and which were re-landscaped in a simple Italian style in the 1930’s. We will hear a little about the house and the surrounding grounds and gardens. This is a really beautiful Walk in a wonderful landscape. For Further details of this Walk please contact the Tourist Information. The TIC can also provide Guided Walks tailored for specific groups. Please contact the Centre to discuss this Sandy and the surrounding area has delightful countryside which is ideal for the walker, both the casual and the more experienced. The low lying landscape is criss-crossed by a series of delightful and well-marked footpaths and bridleways with landscapes of agricultural fields woodlands, low wooded hills and riversides. The Tourist Information Centre has a large range of walking leaflets available including walks around the delightful nearby villages of Everton, Old Warden, Tempsford, Potton, Sutton, Blunham, Moggerhanger, etc. We also have leaflets of walks in the stone villages of north Bedfordshire and the estate villages of Woburn and the southern part of the county. NATIONAL CYCLE NETWORK
National Cycle Routes 12 and 51 National Route 12 of the National Cycle Network will run from Enfield Lock in north London to Spalding via Stevenage, St Neots and Peterborough. At present there are some sections of route still under development, including intermittent sections between Stotfold and Sandy. Route 12 enters Sandy (via Biggleswade Common) along the picturesque Stratford Road. It proceeds northwards along this narrow country road (a former Roman road) and continues through the town, following the sign posted route, until it joins Route 51. National Route 51 of the National Cycle Network will connect Colchester and Oxford via Harwich, Felixstowe, Ipswich, Bury St. Edmunds, Cambridge, Bedford and Milton Keynes. That part between Sandy, Bedford and Milton Keynes is known as the ‘University Way’ and the route follows a mixture of traffic-free cycle paths and minor roads. The cycle track from Sandy to Bedford follows the route of the former Bedford to Cambridge
14
Railway line. To join the track in Sandy one goes under the bridge which carries the A1 dual carriageway at the northern end of the town. One proceeds along this delightful cycle track, going over former railway bridges and passing the villages of Blunham and Willington. At the latter one can enjoy refreshments at the riverside Danish Camp and visit the National Trust’s 16th century Dovecote and Stable. One passes though Bedfordshire’s agricultural landscape and along the banks of the River Ouse. There’s a diverse mix of habitats to explore and enjoy – look out for regular visitors including Kingfisher, Lapwing, Badger and Buzzard. Copies of the route and map of Route 51 can be found on the website www.letsgo.org.uk. A number of Cycling booklets can be purchased from the Tourist information Centre including ‘The National Cycle Network – South Cambridge shire, Beds and North Herts Cycle Map’ and ‘Easy Bike Rides off the Bedford to Sandy Cycle Way’.
