Guest Speakers & Workshop Leaders

Dr Deborah Gabriel (Founder & CEO, Black British Academics) is a Lecturer in Marketing Communications at Bournemouth University, where she brings a critical focus to degree programmes in marketing communications, advertising, public relations, politics and media. Her areas of expertise include professional journalism, strategic communication, qualitative research and building online/offline communities and networks.

Aisha Richards (Director, Black British Academics) has lectured in art and design for more than a decade at Central Saint Martins. She is the Founder and Programme Director of Shades of Noir, a long-term strategy that promotes cultural value through various activities to enhance race equality in arts education and the creative industries. She is also Joint Chair of GEMS (Group for the Equality of Minority Staff) and an academic board member. Dr Martin Glynn (Gold Member, Black British Academics) is an Honorary Research Fellow at Wolverhampton University. A criminologist with over 25 years’ experience in criminal justice and public health; he developed a critical race theory of black male desistance for his doctoral thesis awarded in 2013. He has since established a research consultancy, Sankofa Associates, where he specializes in Critical Race Ethnodrama.

Terry Finnigan (Gold Member, Black British Academics) is Head of Widening Participation at London College of Fashion. She has led four inclusive curriculum projects at University of the Arts London based on co-creation between staff, students and alumni. She was awarded an HEA National Teaching Fellowship in 2009 and is committed to the promotion of inclusive curricula in art and design, equity and success for BME students. Connie St Louis (Gold Member, Black British Academics) is Director of the Science Journalism MA at City University and an award-winning freelance broadcaster, science journalist, writer and scientist. She has produced several science and health programmes for BBC Radio 4 and BBC World Service. She is currently undertaking a PhD that examines the absence and impact of investigative journalism on science and medicine. Dr Dibyesh Anand is Head of the Politics and International Relations Department at the University of Westminster. He is passionate about producing scholarship that is meaningful to individuals and groups that are often marginalised, minoritized, occupied and oppressed. His teaching focuses on politics and international relations of the postcolonial world, with an emphasis on the emerging powers of China and India. 4


Guest Speakers (VIP Reception) The Rt Hon Lord Paul of Marylebone PC was appointed Chancellor of the University of Westminster in 2006. He was raised to the peerage in 1996 and sits in the House of Lords as Baron Paul of Marylebone in the city of Westminster. He was Deputy Speaker of the House of Lords between 2008 and 2010 and sworn to the Privy Council in 2009. Miranda Brawn is a Director at city investment bank Daiwa Capital, where she is responsible for managing the company’s legal risk across Europe for their derivatives and securities financing business. Past roles include stockbroker and legal advisor specializing in commercial and civil litigation.

Dr Mykaell Riley is Head of Music Production at the University of Westminster, where he established the Centre for Black Music Research. He has worked as an educational consultant and music industry advisor for a number of organisations including Arts Council England, the British Museum, the Maritime Museum and the V & A.
