Launching a publication and running a multimedia company was never part of the plan. In 2002, I had left a very nice cushy corporate career that anchored nearly 14 years in NYC. Then I opted for change- to be a suburban mom, raise kids, move into a house, ..... and with no other income but my husband’s. Shortly after my second was born in 2003, I knew this was complete, but my mind kept going. In 2004 when my son was nearly 2 and my daughter 8 months, I started NJ Kids for the need to find things to do with the kids and for myself. All at the same time, I bumped into the amazing people that have helped shape this company into where it is today.

I give thanks to all the relationships and friendships that had come out of this journey. From my first client who gave me a chance (with nothing to show for it), the retired postal service worker who showed me the routes, my distributors who jumped on and delivered every month never fail, the women/moms/client managers who help organize my office and keep everyone happy, graphic artist who bring us color, webmaster who endure my abstract ideas, my new bloggy mom who writes for all, ... and behind the scenes...my mom who watch my kids while I meet customers, and my husband who kept me ‘in’ the business... your work and support are totally totally appreciated! I thank our dear customers who have brought us into our 8th year! Already! I thank our readers who pick up NJ Kids month after month, our growing Facebook fans who share, and the moms who follow us from event to event - it is great meeting you IN person.

BONUS: Amphitheater shows during July and August AND an amazing playground right across the parking lot. Johnson Park Zoo – If you are looking for a quick family outing, this is a small zoo in Johnson Park in Piscataway. BONUS: Lots to do in the park, including East Jersey Old Towne and 3 playgrounds.
Free and Fabulous Nature Centers, Parks and Outdoor Spaces
Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge - The center covers 7,768 acres of varied habitats and is an important resting and feeding area for more than 244 species of birds; Fox, deer, muskrat, turtles, fish, frogs and a wide variety of wildflowers and plants can be found on the refuge. BONUS: Visitor Center and miles of trails and boardwalks to explore. Trailside Nature and Science Center – It may seem small, but it is chock full of displays, including live animals, dioramas, exhibits on Native Americans, the night sky and more. BONUS: Located in Watchung Reservation, there are miles of trails, a deserted village, and a fabulous playground in the “Loop”. Liberty State Park – Enjoy miles of nature with the NYC skyline as the backdrop. BONUS: Central Railroad Terminal of New Jersey AND Richard Sullivan Nature Area are adjacent and there are ample spots to play and picnic. The Highline – Walk above the NYC streets on the transformed subway line. BONUS: The landscaping along the elevated route is beautiful PLUS make sure the kids bring along a ‘good eye’ to spot some of the paintings on the walls of the nearby apartment. Don’t forget to bring a snack for the kids and lounge on bench.
Freylinghausen Arboretum – Spend the day exploring the blooming landscaped gardens, including wetlands, native woodlands and the meadow. BONUS: There is a Braille Garden for our sight-impaired friends. Hawk Rise Sanctuary – A short, but beautiful hike along a converted landfill, marshlands and wooded boardwalk. BONUS: Interpretative signs explain the history of Hawk Rise and provide a good lesson on landfills and how they can be returned to nature PLUS lots of birds.
Fabulous and Free Historical Sites
Morristown National Historical Park – Part of the National Park Service, this park commemorates the 1779-1780 Winter encampment of Washington and his troops. BONUS: Kids get a free history lesson without realizing it (because they are having so much fun!) PLUS miles of trails and scenic picnic areas. Princeton Battlefield – This is the site of the January 3, 1779 battle, considered to be fiercest fight of war. BONUS: Combine a visit to the battlefield with an afternoon at the Princeton Art Museum (also free!) Drumthwacket – The official residence of the NJ Governor. BONUS: Make a day of it in Princeton – also visit the Princeton Battlefield and/or Princeton Art Museum Washington State Crossing Park - Free on weekends. Stand on the banks of the Delaware River and see where George Washington made his historical crossing on December 25, 1776. BONUS: There is also a visitor Center, the Johnson House, nature trails and Observatory. In December, costumed volunteers re-enact the crossing. Independence Hall and Liberty Bell, Philadelphia – Experience history in Philadelphia. Enter the halls where the Declaration was signed and see the famous cracked bell. BONUS: Enjoy a walk along the waterfront at Penn’s Landing – they have a variety of concerts during the summer.
