Areeba Magsi Exploring Energy ... There's no energy without motion. My objective is to capture energy in a still medium. A recurring question I ask myself: Is there a relationship between energy and stillness? Well. Yes both opposites exist in parallel and one cannot explore energy without stillness. To study energy, one must explore stillness to understand movement. I study anatomy of horses from structure to muscle to capture reflex of movement. From my early days I have been fascinated with horses. The roots go back to my father's polo days and his passion for horses. I simply inherited it and started putting it on paper. I went to Central St Martins for my undergraduate to study theatre design, and then went on to do a masters in anthropology of media at SOAS, completed in 2005.
But I kept drawing until 8 years ago, I stopped and I never knew why? Two years back I picked up the pencil again and started sketching horses. I went to see a renowned artist master of horses Saeed Akhtar. He is in his late age and doesn't teach anymore but he said something very intriguing to me "You were dead for 8 years and now you are living again".
If I hadn't stopped to work, I wouldn't have realised the importance of working on my passions again. Hence I started to re-evaluate in my mind the concept and coexistence of energy & stillness, alive & dead. This series of work is on polo exploring different mediums. Polo is a fast paced game and the energy level very high. The horse is in full gallop, and the rider connecting to the horse is in perfect balance to strike. Hence the relationship of harmony (stillness) between the player and the horse to fuel energy. I continue to understand more and more with every piece of work...
