RESEARCH IN ART & DESIGN

The standing of our research community was confirmed in the recent Research Assessment Exercise (RAE). The RAE 2008, Britain’s nationwide assessment of international research excellence, found that 10% of research in the School of Art and Design is world leading, 25% is internationally excellent and an additional 50% is recognized internationally.

THE research groups Art, Practice and Critical Theory: This group is noted for its work on critical theory as well as exhibition. The researchers have expertise in theories and material skills that inform modern making, and engage in analysis and critique of both the formal and cultural issues related to contemporary representation and expression. Members of the group utilise a full range of 2D, 3D and time-based media skills and approaches. Material Design and Applied Art: This group champions craft as an experimental and future looking practice. Its members are engaged with aesthetic, technical, creative, historical and methodological research that challenges the boundaries of established craft practice. The group has expertise in the plastic arts and 3D design, most specifically in the areas of art glass, tableware design in silver, as well as ceramics, architectural ceramics and textiles. Art, Society and Environment: This group is interested in how artists critically engage in the public realm in ways that serve ideals of radical democracy and creativity in the public interest. The research group brings together artists and writers with a wide range of skills, who question and interrogate the context, environment and situation of art.

The School of Art and Design is one of the most significantly improved groups of art and design researchers in the UK. Prof Tim Collins said, “We established the Centre for Art, Design, Research and Experimentation three years ago to focus and develop the strengths in our research culture. We have a robust group of PhD students, a fascinating research lecture series and a new curatorial fellow. The School of Art and Design continues to move forward and contribute to the form and function of Art and Design in the 21st Century.”

Art, Design and Creative Technology: This group blends the interdisciplinary expertise of artists, designers and computing experts in areas such as animation, games design, graphic design, illustration, and interactive and web-based media. The group’s main focus is on technology as a means of developing and delivering creative content and exploring human inter-relationships through programmed interactivity and immersive and discursive/narrative environments.

Each research group is led by a senior researcher (professor or reader) and research staff are affiliated with one of the groups. To meet students’ interests in interdisciplinary approaches to art and design, we have forged relationships in the humanities, computer science and architecture/planning to provide the best interdisciplinary PhD experience possible.

Centre for Art, Design, Research and Experimentation (CADRE) is a robust group of over thirty researchers who are organized into research groups according to their areas of expertise. Each of our research groups is recognized for work that is both forward looking and influential in the world of art and design.
