Poster artist:
Amanda Bennett The Decatur Arts Festival selected Amanda Bennett for the 2019 poster artwork. Bennett remembers painting as a child with her grandmother, who used a spatula as her primary tool. Years later, staring at the blank walls of her loft in Birmingham, Ala., she rediscovered her passion for the process of creation. Though it began as a practical answer to the abject poverty of life after college, this act of thrifty outfitting inspired her to cultivate her own unique style, a place where process demands as much attention as its end result. As a Huntsville, Ala., native, Bennett spent 10 years in Nashville, where she finally got serious about her art. Her musicinspired art gained local attention, as her signature guitars found their homes in local digs such as Fanny’s House of Music on the east side. When Bennett decided to step away from the pace of nine-to-five living, her art reflected her transformation. She moved through a transcendent few months of abstracts and then awakened one morning from a night of mixed media dreaming. She has taken a few of her favorite things — mid-century advertising, acrylic mediums and photography — and transformed them into a pop art-inspired funk style mashup for your viewing pleasure. Bennett now humbly hangs her hat in the city of New Orleans. The city’s rhythm, color palette and energy continue to stir and ignite a creative process born in
the deep south. Bennett is never too far from her grandmother’s easel, creating art inspired by the technique and the soul of her teacher.
Take the poster home with you! Visit the Information Tent on the MARTA plaza during the Artists Market and check out the T-shirt selection and poster with this year’s artwork. See the map at left for the tent location.

Jodi Helmer Protecting Pollinators: How To Save The Creatures That Feed Our World
May 22, 7:15 pm New York Times bestselling writer Pat Conroy inspired a legion of devoted fans numbering in the millions, but none is more loyal to him and more committed to sustaining his legacy than the many writers he nurtured over the course of his 50-year writing life. In sharing their stories of Conroy, his fellow writers honor his memory and advance our shared understanding of his lasting impact on literary life in, and well beyond, the American South.
May 20, 7:15 pm We should thank a pollinator at every meal. These diminutive creatures fertilize a third of the crops we eat and in North America and Europe, bee populations have already plummeted by more than a third, and the population of butterflies has declined 31 percent. Protecting Pollinators explores why the statistics have become so dire and how they can be reversed. Along with inspiring stories of revival and lessons from failed projects, readers will find practical tips to get involved, and keep these pollinators fluttering, soaring, and buzzing around us.
Jodi Helmer writes about food and farming while tending gardens and keeping bees on a small homestead in North Carolina. She is the author of six books, including Farm Fresh Georgia and Growing Your Own Tea Garden.

Ponce de Leon Ave. New York Times and bestselling author of 17 novels including the psychological thriller The Wife, Alafair Burke visits for the release of her latest thriller, The Better Sister, the story of two estranged sisters: one the widow of a prominent Manhattan lawyer, the other his ex. To save the teenage boy accused of murdering him, they must confront a history of long-buried secrets and betrayal. She will be joined on stage by Georgia’s own Karin Slaughter, bestselling author of the Grant Counter and Will Trent books. WILLIS
SLAUGHTER
Featured writers for this panel discussion are Jonathan Haupt (co-editor of Our Prince of Scribes), Cliff Graubart, Cynthia Graubart, Anthony Grooms, and William Walsh. Each author in this collection shares a slightly different view of Conroy, shedding new light on the writer and the man.

Anything Veronika Jackson sings sounds soulful. Her music draws inspiration from traditional blues and the 1960s folk music movement. She is a singer/songwriter who performs originals as well as classic songs. Veronika Jackson is the grassroots of American folk blues.
“The Last Leaf,” Wyatt’s newest collection of songs, provides listeners a glimpse of an artist rediscovering himself. Going back to his north Georgia roots has left the fiddler/singer evaluating and celebrating who he has become as an artist. During his performances, the haunting, intimate songs juxtaposed with his hilarious stories create a beautiful tension.

DeKalb History Center Exhibits Open Daily: Monday-Friday, 10 am-4 pm Saturday, May 25, 10 am-5 pm | Sunday, May 26, noon-4 pm Old Courthouse on the Square | Main Floor The DeKalb History Center has four exhibits on the main floor of the historic Old DeKalb County Courthouse.
Deep Roots in DeKalb: The Flat Rock Story of Resilience Believed to be one of the oldest African-American communities in Georgia, Flat Rock was founded and strengthened by individuals who wanted to ensure the safety and success of African-Americans in the aftermath of the Civil War. The community of Flat Rock thrived in part because of the immense communal bond of its citizens and the selflessness of its leaders. Theodore A. Bryant, Sr., ensured the development of Flat Rock by purchasing nearby land and distributing it to families in the area. This gesture allowed the citizens of Flat Rock to build a strong foundation of support and ensure the safety and well-being of the community. Despite consistent animosity and prejudice, the people of Flat Rock remained strong, resilient, and united.
Reclaimed by Nature: the Historic Davidson Quarries of Arabia Mountain This photography exhibit, by Virginie Drujon-Kippelen, features historic and contemporary photos of a former granite quarry at what is now the DavidsonArabia Mountain Nature Preserve. These quarries were historically an important part of DeKalb County’s economy. Lithonia granite was used in paving and construction projects, including the his-

the ranch house, but here you will learn their major characteristics. We have already heard reports from people who now “see them everywhere!” And if you think you already know everything about the ranch house because you grew up in one, we might have a few surprises for you!
The Mid-Century Ranch House: Hip and Historic!
Decorative Arts from the Permanent Collection

They are so common it is almost easy to disregard the patterns of history these houses illustrate. Visitors to this exhibit will learn why this house type was so popular and the reason DeKalb County was the epicenter of this mid-century construction boom. There are a number of variations found in
This exhibit features a sampling of pieces from the DeKalb History Center’s holdings, acquired over the nearly 70 years since the organization was established. The emphasis is on antique furniture, with some items previously owned by prominent DeKalb County citizens such as author Caroline McKinney Clarke, Judge Charles Whitefoord Smith, and Bishop Warren Akin Candler. Most objects date from the early 19th century to the early 20th century.

In addition to gallery shows year-round at the Decatur Visitors Center gallery at 113 Clairemont Ave., the alliance works to make Decatur a collaborative environment for artists, gallery owners, theater and dance troupes, and the public. And it helps to make cool things happen in the city, as you can see on these pages. Learn more at decaturartsalliance.org

Arts Alliance Presents Architecture Pub Crawl Join Decatur Arts Alliance on Saturday, May 18, noon-6 p.m., for a unique experience that combines contemporary art, architecture and history, served up with a side of beer. It’s a first-ever pub crawl with an educational twist. At each pub stop a docent will reveal the backstory of its building, and offer fascinating insights into its past. In between we’ll highlight murals and sculptures we encounter along the crawl. The crawl begins with a check-in at Steinbeck’s, 529 East Lake Dr., in the heart of historic Oakhurst village. A trolley will transport attendees to the square for the downtown Decatur portion of the tour. Stops include Steinbeck’s, Scout, Brickstore Pub, Square Pub, Deer and Dove, and Kimball House. Tickets are $40 and include one beer at each of the six locations. Designated driver ticket price is $20.
