RESEARCH IN THE REAL WORLD: Walking the floors of trade shows and expos, we discover what’s popular and imagine what’s possible.

At DecoPac, creating our Wedding Program is truly a labor of love. Many talented people are involved in the research, planning and development required to conceive and create our cake designs, decorating products, tools and resources. Before we present our four new Wedding Cake designs and the trends they’re based on, we want to share a glimpse of our process. Our product development team and cake designers attend tradeshows and consumer expos—for both the bakery and wedding industries—to take the pulse of the marketplace. We examine the latest trends in weddings, as well as design, fashion and other style-setting categories. To accomplish this, we partner with leading trend researchers, commission our own research and tap the wisdom of our on-staff trend experts. We also engage in social media listening to hear how our customers are doing and learn what types of solutions they are seeking. All of these insights help inform and inspire our team as they collaborate to develop a beautiful, trend-forward collection that supports your bakery’s success.

Hy-Vee in-store bakeries are known for talented cake designers and personal service. In January 2017, cake designer Cora Grissom reinforced that reputation when she created a wedding cake for Emily McGlynn, daughter of DecoPac’s Co-chairman of the Board, Mike McGlynn. With more than 15 years of cake decorating experience, Cora embraced the challenge. “I was a bit nervous,” says Cora, “but it was fun and I was really happy to do it.” During the consultation at Hy-Vee, Emily shared pictures and ideas for her theme—Winter Wonderland—envisioning the look of a winter sunset over a lake. Cora was impressed by Emily’s organization: “She had a big binder full of ideas and color swatches.” To create Emily’s four-tiered dream cake, Cora used colored buttercream, smoothing it into an ombre sky. White chocolate and buttercream birch trees and stars completed the scene, while glitter added subtle shimmer. Due to its size, part of the cake was assembled onsite. Cora made certain the cake came together flawlessly as the bride’s father observed nearby.

While bride Emily’s cake knowledge and organization made the process go smoothly, cake designer Cora admits most brides need a bit more guidance and offers these tips: Ask the bride to bring in color swatches or select paint samples from the hardware store. This ensures your decorating palette matches the bride’s expectations. Show her DecoPac’s wedding cake pages to spark ideas. Pay attention to the designs she likes and how she communicates. This gives you a sense of her personality. If a bride’s favorite look is beyond her budget, offer creative solutions, such as a smaller showpiece cake with sheet cakes. Dessert tables, donuts and mini cupcakes are also popular. On your order form, feature room for sketching designs and include a sketch of the inside layers. Take detailed notes during the consultation then review them with the bride to fill in any gaps. Give the bride a photocopy for her records. Detailed notes demonstrate your professionalism and ensure any decorator in your bakery can assist the bride. Most of all, remember this is a happy, exciting time—be sure to create a positive cake ordering experience for the bride.

HOW TO MAINTAIN YOUR PHOTOCAKE® SYSTEM Take care of your PhotoCake system now and it will take care of you as graduation demands multiply. Follow these three steps at least three weeks before graduation season to minimize last minute hassles and keep you ahead of the graduation curve. CHECK YOUR SYSTEM UPDATE PhotoCake Online users: You’re set, updates are automatic! PhotoCake IV users: Click the PhotoCake button on your home screen and view “Update Information.” If your most recent update is from 2017 or earlier, call PhotoCake Support (1-800-644-1228) for assistance. PREP YOUR PRINTER Regular and thorough maintenance is required in order to prolong the life of your printer. Have extra cleaning cartridge or printheads (if your printer requires them) on hand, so you can keep a regular printer maintenance schedule throughout graduation season. At any time you can check your ink flow levels and clogs by running a color test on printer paper. Daily use of your printer is necessary for optimal performance. On slower days, run a quick color test to keep the ink flowing.

HOW TO MAINTAIN YOUR AIRBRUSH When your airbrush gun is running at full speed, you’re ready for anything. Regular cleaning and maintenance is the secret to staying in the flow, especially during busy times like graduation. Use these tips to improve airbrush performance and lifespan. BETWEEN COLORS: WATER WORKS GREAT Rinse the color cup with water until airbrush runs clear, spraying out excess. Now, you’re ready for a new color. WHEN DAY’S DONE: WATER + CLEANER At the end of every day, use airbrush cleaner followed by water for a more thorough cleaning. Make it a regular habit to help prevent future hassles. TROUBLESHOOTING: SPECKLING Speckling has several common causes, including low air pressure, clogged nozzle cap, needle build-up or a bent needle. Read on to uncover the cause and fix it fast. LOW AIR PRESSURE How’s your air pressure? It may be hindering smooth coverage. Adjust your pressure and test until you achieve the right result. CLOGGED NOZZLE CAP Is icing trapped in your nozzle cap? Simply unscrew the cap, clean with a damp cloth and replace the cap. NEEDLE BUILD-UP Is color built up on your needle? Unscrew the handle and needle chucking nut to remove the needle, then clean the needle with airbrush cleaner. Continue cleaning the entire airbrush gun to remove all color residue.
