The Future of Celebrations For over 30 years this company nestled in the northern suburbs of Minneapolis was creating the magic that would delight celebrations of millions of families. DecoPac, Inc., born from the bakery business, was built with integrity and honesty, which were essential to the company’s continued successes. Now DecoPac is focused on the next 30 years and beyond. Mike McGlynn, CEO of DecoPac, looks at the future with great optimism, especially in the wake of a key acquisition. In June, DecoPac, the premier supplier of cake decorations to professional cake decorators and bakeries, completed the acquisition of Bakery Crafts, a privately held marketer and distributor of high-quality cake decorations based in West Chester, Ohio. From supply chain efficiencies to collaborative design, the combined companies bring the best ideas to the cake decorating table. “It has become evident to us that customers are excited about being able to place one order for all their cake and cupcake decoration needs,” McGlynn says. “We’re now a combined force.” Instead of how DecoPac competes with Bakery Crafts, McGlynn points out, the future is firmly focused on “how we can best service the customers. Our focus is on driving the category as a whole and providing solutions that drive cake sales.” Other synergies include a unified print-on-demand cake decorating system, so customers will not have to choose between DecoPac’s PhotoCake or Bakery Crafts’ Copy Confections system. “As these come together, all images will be available on both systems and both will be operating on the same operating system. It will be a one-stop shop combination of print-ondemand software.”

Further, the acquisition provides instore bakeries with the added convenience of planning out event calendars with ease. DecoPac will continue to provide valuable tools – both licensed and generic products – that enable instore bakeries to plan ahead for upcoming major motion picture releases, key holidays and special occasions, as well as everyday celebrations. “Don’t disappoint the customer. It’s their day, so it is very important to get it right,” McGlynn says. “When it comes down to it, it’s all about the celebration. We want to fill the needs for all consumers at every age and stage in their lives.” DecoPac continues to expand its category leadership position as it focuses on delivering bakeries and consumers the hottest products and technologies. McGlynn credits the “amazing talented team” of creative individuals who are collaborating on the latest ideas and trends in cake decorating. “It’s going really, really well,” McGlynn says of the Bakery Crafts acquisition, “and a lot of energized people are working on it.”

DecoPac began as part of McGlynn Bakeries, which started in 1919 as a single retail bakery in Minneapolis, Minnesota. DecoPac was formed internally to supply cake decorations to its own stores, as well as other bakeries. Since 1987, DecoPac has maintained relationships and licensing agreements that provide the company rights to market cake decorating products featuring popular characters from Disney®, MARVEL, Lucasfilm, Nickelodeon™, Mattel®, DreamWorks®, Peanuts® and other licensors, such as all major sports leagues. DecoPac also owns Culpitt and Sugarfayre in the U.K. and operates three manufacturing and distribution facilities in North East England. Culpitt, Ltd. and Sugarfayre are the largest cake decoration suppliers in the U.K. and employ over 200 people. “With all the innovation going on in our U.K. business, where we manufacture edible products, we have another whole range of products, and there are obvious synergies there,” McGlynn says. McGlynn beams with optimism as he discusses the future of DecoPac. “There has never been a better time to be in bakery. There is always a celebration going on every day, whether it is a birthday or a team sporting event or something else. We love being a part of that.”

Easier than it Looks: Craft a Holiday Cake

1. Print PhotoCake image strips, colorful print image, text and a personal photo.

2. Cut and place the image strip.

4. Add the colorful print. TIP: If the icing is set, spray with a mist of clean water to help adhere.

3. Cut a colorful print to size.

4. Use a fondant cutter around letters.

9. Use a gingerbread cookie fondant cutter and a brown DecoSheet to create decorative accents.

5. Use a small amount of icing to place the fondant DecoShapes速 and letters.

10. Place them on cake and using a #2 tip, pipe decorations.

11. Using tip #10, pipe White and Red Red borders.

6. Cut and place the personal photo onto a fondant DecoSheet速. 7. Cut the fondant DecoSheet to create a frame around the photo. 8. Place the photo and frame with a little icing to adhere.

12. Place White Mini Gum Paste Bow.
