We seen this emerge two years ago with the stag head boom, & now two years on, our forest friends are still hanging around but this time not only on the wall above the fireplace, stags are taking over our cushions, wallpaper & upholstery…. and they also have some accomplices. Pheasant, fox, squirrel, moose and rabbit designs in a mixture of prints, weaves, tapestry, check, luxe faux fur throws & fair-isle pattern jumpers, sees the high street brimming with the woodland theme this winter season.
The look of the stag head where this trend all began has even moved on too, stainless steel or an all-white painted finish gives it a new contemporary feel that looks effortlessly chic against a dark, moody wall. Additions of a scarf or dickie-bow can give it a quirky playful feel. Stag head prints framed or on canvas are also an emerging twist on the stag head dominance. Getting your interior feel back to nature is easy, with so much on the high street to help us get that cosy cabin feel just right.

ike the importance of the shoes & the bag to a woman, the blind is just as deserving of the ultimate in bling. Adding a subtle or dramatic accessory can make all the difference in giving blinds a head turning appearance.
Accessory choice is strong & not to be ignored in fashion. We dress ourselves up to portray our personality. An extension of this would be doing the same to our homes & with The Fabric Box Collection’s design led fabrics to texture’s, colour & more accessory options than ever, our homes can now speak out & embrace or own unique preferred style... A wealth of accessory choices to funk up or subtly add another dimension to your blind are available; choose from an 89/300mm bottom finish to add a hint of contrast or bejewel your view with a luxurious Shirin braid. A Scallop finish gives a more traditional look or a 50mm slat - a more edgy contemporary feel.
Let’s not forget the Daisy or Florette, effectively the ‘blind brooch’ which adds signature style in a choice of fashion forward colours to entice & appeal, by accentuating or harmonizing with whatever choice of blind you desire, be it subtle or daring. The power of the perfect showroom is not to be forgotten. With this, making simple accessory additions to showcase the possibilities will lead to added valued sales. Promoting and selling The Fabric Box fabrics and accessories offers a unique product that in turn adds value, profit and margin.
With our feelers at the ready The View touch on two keys trends we see making a serious impact on 2014’s interior scene.
COLOUR FLOW This trend is an evolution and step forward from the ‘Ombre’ trend we saw this year. In the ‘Ombre’ trend the focus was on colours seamlessly flowing from one hue into the next. Dip dye was the “in” thing and we all loved it.
Defined colour flow moves us into the digital era of refined technological manufacturing and printing processes. The key here is seeing the defined boundaries of how colours move from one colour to the next. Furniture pieces are painted in sections of colour in tonal hues to define and bring it to life. Colours flow from pastels into brighter hues and are off-set with white surfaces and unfinished materials such as bleached wood. In practice this can work in two ways: either by having coloured furniture in a room with pastel walls and a white floor, or a room where the coloured stripes are painted on the walls and the furniture is white.

Vibrant, structured, architectural and explosive; Colour play focuses on the dramatic impact colour and architectural structures have in spaces. Overall the pallet is an unexpected explosion of bright colours that seemingly clash and erupt when used in conjunction with strong shapes. This is very much a manmade trend with strong emphasis on manmade finishes such as concrete, glass, steel and coloured Perspex. Skeletal furniture pieces with wire frames shapes add texture. The use of geometric shapes; in textiles, furniture and existing architectural focal points such as staircases and doorways define a space into clear areas. It creates depth to what would naturally be a basic room. This is a great look for summer if you want to go bold and bright and make a confident design statement.

Feel Good
GIVING In the run up to the festive season it can be easy to forget it’s the little things that really make Christmas. Here’s how small acts of kindness can create a big difference for those less fortunate than ourselves…
DONATE BLOOD, There’s no better time than the festive season to donate blood. While more accidents happen at this time of year, there are fewer people able to donate due to bad weather and flu. Find your nearest donation point at blood.co.uk.
LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOURS Consider preparing some hand made gifts for those less fortunate, visiting people who live alone or have no family close, could make a massive difference to their Christmas.
ON GO DE
ONE HOUR TO GO... Donate money to charity just by turning up to work with the British Red Cross ‘What’s One Hour Worth’ scheme. Using Payroll Giving, your donation comes straight out of your pay, so not only does the charity receive your donation, but they also get the tax you would have paid, too. Visit whatsonehourworth.co.uk.

DO THE CAN-CAN Add a can of food to your shopping each week during November and December – then donate them all to a local food bank. You’ll barely notice the cost added to your overall weekly shopping trip, but it will make a big difference to people in need. Full details at trusselltrust. org/foodbank-projects.
NE OOD EED CHRISTMAS TOY APPEAL The Salvation Army are asking for donations of toys for all ages as part of this year’s toy appeal. Toys donated will be given to vulnerable and needy children in local borough’s to ensure they have an enjoyable Christmas. Find out more at www.salvationarmyappeals.org.uk.
PAWS FOR THOUGHT Humans aren’t the only ones who need love at Christmas, which is why RSPCA centres nationwide welcome volunteers. From walking a dog to playing with cats, there’s a way to get involved. If you can’t give up your time, the donation of old towels or sheets are always appreciated to help keep animals warm and clean.
Keeping Warm in Style With soaring energy costs and growing concern about further price rises from energy companies, keeping our homes well insulated this winter is of greater importance, in the bid to reduce our energy cost. Insulating your roof-space, installing double glazing or exercising greater control over heating usage are often things that come to mind. The insulating of our windows is often the least appreciated energy saving technology.
B
linds not only offer a stylish addition to your interior but can reduce heat loss through windows. Roller blinds can reduce heat loss by up to 40%, while shutters can reduce the heat loss by up to 58%.
Giving your interior a natural feel is easily achieved, with so much on the high street to help us get that cosy feel just right. What we put in our windows can be key to the overall look while it is estimated that it could save up to £96 per year. Controlling the entry of solar heat and light has a considerable effect on the energy needs of a building. The Energy Saving Trust estimates that 18% of all heat loss in a domestic setting is through windows. Proper use of window blinds can maximise the solar heat gain in winter and also provide insulation properties. In the summer months window blinds can reduce the heat gain thus reducing the need for cooling systems.
HEAT LOSS THROUGH WINDOWS Conduction
The installation of window blinds reduces the amount of heat lost by these four means. Utilising window blinds as an energy saving device involves the balance between controlling light and heat and reducing energy demand.
Raidiation
Convection
Air Infiltration
Outside Temp 340F
There are four main means by which heat is lost through a window: 1. Conduction 2. Convection 3. Radiation 4. Air Leakage
Inside Temp 740F
The question, “What is the most energy efficient form of shading?” is not easily answered. There are many variables which can affect the answer. Whether a building is used for domestic or commercial purposes will affect the core blind function. For domestic, the main function required is primarily focused on controlling heating cost, while commercial buildings focus on cooling and lighting. Further factors include a buildings position, the different types of glass and frame and what part of the country the building is and whether or not the sun will shine.
ADAPT While this question is not easily answered, the domestic setting may be a little more straight forward, where the main energy cost is heating, there are certain blind styles that offer greater insulation properties. Decora’s portfolio of quality wood products, Santa Fe Shutters, Timberlux and Sunwood all provide ultimate energy efficiency with excellent insulation properties in a range of moody colours from taupes, grey to black. Choosing white however is most efficient with the best shading co-efficient performance given to this colour. During winter, shutters will help keep the heat in whilst they ventilate and keep a room cool in the summer. Aside from making a bold interior statement and allowing you to control the filtration of light they also offer a child safe solution, with no cords or chain to pose threat to children.

Did you know… The phrase “Daylight Robbery” derives from times of old when window tax was introduced around the late 1600’s. Dependent on how many windows your dwelling had, the more tax you were charged. People went to great lengths to avoid this tax and many windows were bricked up or painted black to avoid payment. A tax people loathed paying for the simple privilege of light and air and hence this the phrase ‘Daylight Robbery’ was born…

PRACTICAL Roof windows are a great solution to flood light into tricky spaces or make a stunning feature of a large roof conversion. The term ‘roof window’ was used for the first time in a German patent application in 1931 concerning a top hung window structure but the history of roof window dates back to the early 19th century. A major increase in popularity of roof windows in the 1970’s lead to the emergence of the popular design we all know today.

The Fabric Box-Napa Jidda
The classic bay window is a key feature of traditional British homes. Introduced in 1894 when the Building Act changed regulations, so that windows no longer had to be flush with the exterior wall. This enabled windows to stand proud from the facade. The late Victorian and Edwardian period took advantage of the change in new building regulations and now presented their windows in bays. Medium and larger houses would often display double bay or bow windows creating the illusion of a larger room also maximising the light into the room. Rollers, Romans and Venetians have also been a firm favourite for bay windows. Typically 25 or 35mm venetians in bay give a feeling of grandeur.

Ever wonder what additional Boxing Day treats could be conjured up in your kitchen that are slightly more elaborate than a turkey sandwich? Well here at The View we detail a few turkey treats that are easily made to enjoy infront of the fire with all the family.
Roasted Garlic Baby Potatoes with Rosemary
Merry C h r i s t m
Leftover Turkey Casserole A fuss free one pot recipe that uses up all your leftovers in one go and has a great honey mustard tang! Ingredients • 2 onions, finely chopped • 1 eating apple, cored and chopped
Ingredients
• 2 tbsp olive oil
• 2kg of halved baby potatoes
• 1 tsp dried sage, or 5 sage leaves, chopped
• 2 tbsp runny honey
Fry the onion and apple in the oil until softened in a casserole or deep pan. Stir in the sage for 1 min, then stir in the flour. Gradually stir in the stock followed by the mustard and honey.
• 400g-500g leftover turkey, shredded
Bring up to a simmer and stir in the turkey and roast veg.
• Approx 350g leftover roasted vegetables (like roasted potatoes, parsnips & carrots–chunkily diced)
Cover and gently simmer for 15 mins until turkey is piping hot. Season and eat with mash or jacket potatoes.
• 2 tbsp plain flour • 300ml vegetable or chicken stock • 2 tbsp wholegrain mustard
28
Method
• 1 whole garlic bulb, cloves separated and peeled. • 1 tbs olive oil • 2 tbs fresh rosemary leaves Method Preheat over to 200°C. Place the potatoes and garlic in a roasted pan. Drizzle over the oil. Toss to combine. Sprinkle with rosemary and salt. Bake for 1 hour or until golden brown.
We thought about adding a second healthier “turkey salad” recipe here… but Christmas is a time of indulgence and not the time to eat like a rabbit (that starts on January 1st). So for option number two we have went with a customary turkey curry!
Tu rkey Cu rry Ingredients • 1 tsp olive oil • 1 onion finely chopped • 1 red pepper • 1 tsp of medium curry powder • 2 tsp of tomato puree • 250ml of chicken stock • 1 tsp of mango chutney • 390g chopped tomatoes in tomato juice • 500g of left over turkey • 250g basmati rice • 200g young leaf spinach washed Method
Oi!
1. Heat the oil in a pan and cook the onion and red pepper for 10 minutes, until softened. Stir in the curry powder and tomato purée and cook for a further 30 seconds. Add the stock, chutney and tomatoes. Simmer for 10 minutes over a medium heat. Add the turkey; cook for a further 5-10 minutes till cooked through. 2. Meanwhile, place the rice in a pan and pour over 500ml of cold water. Bring to the boil then reduce the heat, cover the pan, and simmer for 12 minutes, until tender. Drain. 3. Just before serving, stir in the spinach and season with freshly ground black pepper. Serve with the rice, and poppadoms if you like. 29
THE BEAUTIFUL
GAME
o! Jogo Bonit
On 12th June to 13th July 2014 all eyes will be on the newly laid pitches of Brazil the birthplace of some of the finest players the beautiful game has ever witnessed, Pele, Maradona & Ronaldo to name just a few. A total of twelve stadiums dotted across Brazil are now nearing completion for what’s set to be the biggest world cup to date. The 6th of December sees the final draw for all the games. Still a bit of time to go until kick off so until then here is some of our favourite World Cup facts• • • • •
Brazil’s Pele is the only player to win 3 World Cups: in 1958, 1962 & 1970. Brazil holds the record for most World Cup titles, with 5. The all-time leading scorer in the World Cup is Brazil’s Ronaldo, with 15 goals A host team has never lost an opening match (no pressure Brazil!) The highest scoring game in World Cup history was in 1954, when Austria defeated Switzerland 7-5.
•
Lucien Laurent of France scored the first goal in World Cup history on July 13, 1930 • Russia’s Oleg Slanko holds the record for most individual goals in a single match netting five goals against Cameroon in 1994. • At the end of her performance at the 1994 USA opening ceremony Diana Ross had to kick the ball from 11m into an exploding goal frame to reflect the power of her shooting… and guess what? She failed. The worst penalty miss of all time! • The fastest goal in the world was scored by Turkey’s Hasan Sakur, eleven seconds into the game against South Korea in the 2002 World Cup. • The record for most defeats suffered by a nation during the World Cup tournaments is held by Mexico with 20 losses.
BRAZIL 2014... Rio de Janeiro is already gearing up for the 2016 Olympics. Its 2013 carnival in February was the biggest and most popular yet. And considering what a spectacle the Rio Carnival is, imagine how epic the 2014 World Cup opening ceremony will be. Fuleco is 2014’s official mascot, a “ tatu-bola”: an armadillo that defends itself from predators by rolling up into a ball. Remember the deafening roar of the Vuvuzela from the 2010 South African World Cup? Not to be out done, Brazil will be shaking their ‘Caxirola’ the official noisemaker of the 2014 games.
THINGS TO DO IN RIO (If you are one of the lucky ones that has your ticket booked for next summer…) Even Michael Palin’s epic series could not unearth every delight of this vast country. It is like an entire continent, from its thrilling, teeming metropolises to its virgin rainforest and empty stretches of beach that run for hundreds of miles. Take a half day tour to Sugar Loaf Mountain, one of Rio de Janeiro’s most famous icons. You’ll take a breath-taking ride in a cable car to the top of the Sugar Loaf for panoramic views of Copacabana Beach, Guanabara Bay and Santa Cruz. Try meat cooked Churrasco style! Using only the freshest ingredients and cooked via an open flame, traditional mouth-watering meat dishes are a staple of Brazilian culture.
