Bugg, Sr. died on Feb. 18, 2015 at the age of 88. A memorial service was held March 6 in Chevy Chase, Md., where he resided. James Bugg has been at the helm of Decorating Den Interiors, North America’s largest home furnishings and interior design franchise company, since 1984. In addition to his wife, he is survived by five children and four grandchildren. Son James S. Bugg, Jr. is DDI’s president and CEO, and daughter Darlene Bugg is the company’s events coordinator. Born in Toledo, Ohio on Aug. 10, 1926, Bugg was raised on a farm in Kentucky during the Great Depression. At age 14, he lied about his age in order to join the Civilian Conservation Corps. His franchise experience began in 1970 when he guided the opening of 325 franchises with Century 21. In 1994, he was named chairman of the International Franchise Association and inducted into IFA’s Franchise Hall of Fame in 2009. Bugg was an avid sportsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing and playing golf. A gifted artist, writer and conservationist , he helped found the African Safari Club of Washington, African Wildlife Foundation, Chesapeake Heritage Foundation, Grand National Waterfowl Association, Take A Kid Outdoors (TAKO), and the Yellow Ribbon Fund.
