Florals bloom again in interior design By Marie Feltz
SPECIAL TO THE TRIBUNE
After decades of floral patterns being plowed under in interior design, they are blossoming again in many spaces. Wallcoverings, upholstery, draperies and bedding have all returned to showing floral patterns. One of the wallcovering suppliers we visited with at the last High Point Home Furnishings Market in North Carolina told us they’ve had a 200 percent growth in floral wallcovering sales in the last two years.
We saw more and more florals in upholstered furnishing as we went through numerous showrooms. Why, you ask? Maybe it’s the same reason we are more eager than usual to be outdoors after being so cooped up and limited to technology for connecting with anyone. Why is it so soothing to be near the water? Why is it invigorating but also relaxing to walk in the woods? Why is a mountaintop vista so awesome? F. Scott Fitzgerald put it this way: “There is a pleasure in the pathless
woods. There is a rapture on the lonely shore.” Nature transforms a mood. Interior designers know how to bring nature inside and create a mood-changing space. Florals are the time-tested solution. The late Mario Buatta, legendary interior decorator selected in Architectural Digest’s Top 100, loved floral chintz fabrics so much he became known as “The Prince of Chintz.” He’d be heralding today’s return of flower power in spaces. Wallcovering on one wall, for ex-
ample, can provide both a gorgeous focal point along with a contrast to other non-patterned décor. Or, using floral draperies to complement a dark solid wall and solid area rug can give a special flair. A floral upholstered chair could bring in a touch of whimsy as well as a touch of nature. One or two floral pillows can provide contrast and tranquility. Likewise, floral wall art set against a solid color can be a calming influence. Florals also are wonderful for brightening up a small
space such as a bathroom. COVID home-boundness certainly made us reconsider our home environment. Florals create a welcoming and cozy feeling. Who doesn’t like to look out the window in the morning and see new flowers in bloom? Many of us have returned to the workplace. Why not come home to a bouquet of flowers? Style at Home: Pretty and patriotic styles for summer By Katie Laughridge TRIBUNE NEWS SERVICE
While I have many favorite color combinations, red, white and blue is right near the top year-round. That is one reason I get so excited during the summer months when it comes to the forefront of my shop. While in the other months I try to stay away from making this combination scream USA, these are the months where it is easier than ever to bring out a bit of patriotic prettiness to existing home designs – even for those who don’t share my obsession Tribune News Service for decorating with these hues. Patriotic accessories come in all shapes and sizes. From May to July, this combination goes from subtle beauty to 2022 symbolic June 20, 11:22beauty, am (GMT -4:00) where red goes from just another spot on the color wheel
almost any room and are easy to store or stick in another pillowcase when you are done with them. They come in so many different designs there is always one I can find that fits my space perfectly. With two little ones this
year, I can’t wait to see them running around the yard under the fireworks (or hopefully sleeping through them in my newborns case!). This time of year always makes me so happy to be able to celebrate with family and friends under
all of the stunning red, white and blue. Until next time – happy decorating! Adapted from nellhills. com. Katie Laughridge is the owner of Kansas City interior design destination Nell Hill’s.
