CONDOMINIUMS
Homeowners start to put down roots at Willow It was a cold, snowy, sleetfilled day, but the ground-breaking ceremony for Avi Urban’s Willow at Sherwood Myke townhome project was a heart-warmer for all involved. CALGARY CALGARYSUN SUN Avi Urban’s area sales manager Brian French was joined by a group of new homeowners at the event, including the newly married Andreea and Sami Tantu. “What attracted us to Willow was the charming style and unique personality of the overall development, the nice neighbourhood and the townhouse plans which suited our current housing needs,” says Andreea. “We love Avi Urban’s design style.” The 83, three-storey townhomes in Willow at Sherwood range from 1,100 sq. ft. to 1,400 sq. ft. and feature nine-ft. ceilings, six floor plan options, twocar attached garages, bright colonial exteriors and incredible interior finishes, with unit pricing starting in the $300,000s. opened, allowing the new owners to see what their new homes will look like, says Charron Ungar, president of Avi Urban. “This is an incredibly exciting time for both Avi Urban and our future homeowners as, now that the site is fully serviced, we are ready to begin the task of building,” says Ungar. “Shortly the vision for Willow will emerge from the foundations and the value statement we have worked so hard to achieve will finally make its mark on one of the most vibrant communities in Calgary’s northwest.” Pre-construction homes are almost sold out, with more townhomes set to be released later this year. Information about future releases can be found by registering at www.aviurban.com/ Willow or by calling 403-5367290. The sales centre is located at 38 Nolan Hill Gate N.W. and is open Monday to Thursday from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. and weekends and holidays from noon to 5 p.m.

Give kids some input
to create a great room JANINE WORKMAN Special to the Calgary Sun
A makeover of your child’s bedroom is a great way to create a useful space for rest, play and study. By re-designing your child’s room, you can create a functional space they want to not only have fun in, but also to study in, says Katie O’Dwyer, interior designer and owner of the Decorating Den. “This can be both fun and challenging at the same time. The design style and colour scheme for this room should be simple and based on the child’s preferences,” she said. When choosing a
desk, O’Dwyer recommends selecting a piece with both cupboards and drawers to keep things tidy. “Create organization with colourful folders and binders that can easily be cleaned up at the end of the day,” she said. Creating a reading corner is a great way to put

emphasis on reading. O’Dwyer suggests finding an inexpensive upholstered chair, or even re-upholstering something yourself to include fun fabrics in this new, comfortable space. Ulya Jensen, interior designer and RONA expert, recommends painting an accent wall with chalkboard paint as a fun way to encourage creativity. “Give the younger kids coloured chalk,” she said. “You can paint the wall beside their bed so they can draw or beside their desk so they can make to-do lists, brainstorm — the possibilities are endless.” Be sure to keep your child as involved in decorating as much as possible to ensure they love, and use, their new

Also make sure the furniture is sized appropriately. study space. “Go shopping with your kids and get them some interesting cups, pen holders, storage, etcetera, for them in the colour of their choice,” Jensen said. “Get them a bulletin board and a new little table lamp that they like to get them excited about the prospect of doing work.
“You can also make some homemade labels with the kids so they know where to put all of their items.” Jensen reminds parents to make sure the furniture in their child’s room is sized appropriately. “As kids get older and taller, it’s important to move the furniture up,” she said. “By up, I mean heighten your book-
case, bed, desk, etcetera, to ensure it’s still the right height for them. “Check their chair height and get a new one if they are growing out of it or put some wheels on an old one. “You can also put some lower hooks on the door for clothes, backpacks, etcetera, and keep moving them up as they get older.”

Get teens involved for a space they’ll love
When it comes time to help a young teen redecorate their bedroom, involve them as much as possible to ensure they love, and use, their new space. Consider bold, fun fabrics for bedding and draperies as a way to add personality to a neutral background. As children get older and taller, make sure their furniture grows with them. Check their chair height to ensure good posture.
