aving rented an open plan property before buying this 1940s renovation project, the owners had a clear idea of how they wanted their interior layout to flow. ‘The house we rented was completely open plan and we found it didn’t work for us. We have a two-year-old so it was important that we had a room we could close off, otherwise I’d be tripping over toys strewn across the floor! I liked the idea of having a casual room that would also work as a playroom, where we could close the doors and let the kitchen come into its own in the evenings.’ Converting the original galley kitchen into a utility room, the couple have renovated the entire house and added a single storey extension to the back to accommodate a fabulous new kitchen and dining area with sliding pocket doors leading to a casual living room. With this specific layout agreed from the outset, the couple were less sure when it came to style and design for their new kitchen. ‘We knew we wanted the sliding doors to give us the versatility of a semi open plan space but apart from that, we were open to ideas regarding designs and colour schemes.’ Fergal O’Reilly of Shalford Interiors was recommended to the couple as an excellent designer and cabinetmaker so, after shopping around and doing their research, they made an appointment in Shalford’s

showroom. ‘A friend had recommended Ferghal as being great to deal with and producing exceptional quality in his designs. From our first interaction with him, we had nothing but a positive experience. He is so practical, very enthusiastic and places a huge amount of importance on his designs. Even when I was so unsure of colours and deliberated for ages, Ferghal was incredibly patient, telling me to take my time with such important decisions. He offered a really personal service and was very genuine.’ Choosing a rich and dramatic tone for the island, the Zoffany Victorian Purple handpainted finish is a striking contrast to the Colortrend Dove’s Wing shade on the rest of the cabinetry. Adding further texture and detail, the internals of the wall cabinetry have been painted in Zoffany Dusk. Maintaining a sleek and uncluttered aesthetic, the double larder and integrated fridge freezer have been recessed into the wall for a streamlined finish. ‘We’re so pleased with our new kitchen and how it works in this layout. We don’t have a separate dining room so in the evening, we close the sliding doors and the kitchen takes on a different ambience. Ferghal worked with us to create a scheme that functions perfectly for us as a family. We’re so happy with the results that we’ve since recommended him to friends who are embarking on a new project.’

DRAMATIC IMPACT The owners of this new build overlooking the bay in Skerries have added dramatic impact with a statement splashback & stunning bespoke finishes Photography Rory Corrigan

aving long admired this phenomenal site with panoramic views across the bay, the owners of this unique home grasped the opportunity to build a replacement multi-level dwelling with feature open plan kitchen, living and dining area maximizing the coastal views from the top floor. With a spacious and versatile basement, first floor bedroom level and top floor devoted to a sociable open plan kitchen and living space, this threestorey flat-roofed new build is as unique and bespoke as its custom designed kitchen. Liaising with designer Philip Patrick of The Design Yard, the couple made an initial appointment to discuss their various options in terms of design and style. The kitchen leads to a dining area with steps to a living space with central stove so, with three rooms essentially flowing onto one another, it was paramount that the kitchen stand out as a striking design feature as well as a functional and interactive entertaining space. With outstanding

glass elevations, the house is blessed with breathtaking views so, while the kitchen needed to have a strong visual impact, it was important that it didn’t detract from the scenery beyond the huge expanses of glass. Although the couple’s architect had visions of a stereotypical contemporary German kitchen, the owners had other ideas. Rather than opting for the streamlined Germanic design statement, they preferred the versatility and long-term appeal of a bespoke framed solid wood handpainted design. Getting the balance just right between classic and contemporary, they decided on an unadorned door style in a two tonecolour combination. Admiring the Kenmare collection in the Design Yard showroom, the couple were inspired by this pared back door style with blonded ash internals and handpainted finish so Philip designed a bespoke scheme, based on this collection, adapted to suit their own personal style. The

colour scheme is inspired by the coastal surroundings with an off-white shade on the majority of the cabinetry, offset with a fresh aqua-inspired blue-green tone on the island, which has been carried through to the feature wall beside the dramatic splashback. Indeed, it’s the splashback that sets the tone for the scheme. Especially commissioned, this huge 150mm thick slab of River White Granite was imported and delivered to the top floor via telescopic transporter. With the unusual structural beam supporting the flat roof and the dominant splashback highlighting the Wolf range cooker, this side of the kitchen becomes a helm-like cooking zone within the cavernous open plan space. Doors with contemporary handles are teamed with a minimalistic handleless door design to give a balanced look. Additional storage has been cleverly concealed behind handless push release doors, such as on the back of the island and on high level cabinetry.
