EXIT PUPIL Indicates the amount of light transmitted from the binoculars to the eye. An exit pupil of 2 to 3 millimetres is adequate in daylight. If the binoculars are for use at dusk, the exit pupil should be at least 5 mm. The exit pupil is calculated by dividing the lens diameter in mm by the magnification. This means that a 7x42 is 6 mm and an 8x56 is 7 mm.
TWILIGHT PERFORMANCE Indicates the performance of the binoculars in low light conditions. A higher twilight performance will let you see more details in darker conditions. It is calculated by multiplying the magnification with the lens diameter and then finding the square root. On a pair of 7x42 binoculars, the twilight performance is 17 and for an 8x56 it is 21.

Should you choose 7x42 or 10x50? The two numbers indicate the magnification and objective diameter in millimetres respectively. 7 to 10 times magnification give a good all round performance in terms of depth, sharpness, field of view, and detail. Higher objective diameters, generally speaking, perform better in low light conditions. Mountainsides and extreme hunting In these conditions, 7x, 8x or 10x magnification and an objective diameter of 35-45 mm are good choices. Deer stalking Here, the choice will depend on whether you are hunting in the woods or in open terrain. However, 8x42 binoculars are versatile and well suited for a lot of different situations.
