If I had 1 million dollars and 2 years I would use that time and money to focus on the miseducation, misrepresentation and misconception of minority designers in Graphic Design and Architecture. As problem, I found that the conversation of this topic is not in the doors of creative environments, but on the outside by designers looking in. Therefore, I wanted to create a foundation as an idea to serve as a pipeline for those who are interested and passionate to have their work shown without any boundaries .

Another aspect of the Underground Art + Design Foundation is to promote multiple theme events in particularly “The Exposed Series.” The concept of this event comes as an unveiling of creative geniuses who’s ideals and voices that’s been silenced. Therefore, there is an eagerness to move foreword in design like Walt Disney who said it best, “Around here, however, we don’t look backwards for the very long. We keep moving forward, opening up new doors and doing new things... and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.” ”

2. For this part of the foundation I was inspired by Zaha Hadid’s Chanel Mobile Art Museum. I felt that not only this mobile exhibition will spark an interest, but the artist’s work will shift people’s perspective while educating audiences about minority designers. However, what I noticed about Zaha Hadid’s design, of course, it’s beautiful in design, but with the logistics and the rebuild of the mobile museum it became very costly. Thus, I wanted to focus on the use of ready made materials to refurbish and create the Underground Art + Foundation “SHIFT MOBILE EXHIBITION.”

I was intrigued by designers LOT-EK because their mission, which is to create innovative and economical spaces with the use of cargo containers. The idea is to have the exhibition to be easily transported by road via 18 wheeler, train or by water, which are three ways that cargo containers are transported. By doing this, the design and materials keep to the esthetic of the container and keeps to the container’s environment.

The idea is to use (4) 40’ long stacked cargo containers that are offset. Having the containers offset creates the gesture of movement via land or water, but most importantly in society’s mindset. This movement emphasizes the core idea, which is to provoke forward thinking as we as society begin to grow and understand each other. The color, Yellow was chosen not only to serve as a warning about society’s potential downfall, but to shine a light on a new understanding about community and it’s potential. Also, this color allows the exhibition to be noticed from distances creating a identifiable experience like the sun at daybreak.

Walter Gropius once said “Our guiding principle was that design is neither an intellectual nor a material affair, but simply an integral part of the stuff of life, necessary for everyone in a civilized society.” What should be understood is from this quote is that design has a functional purpose, which is what the “SHIFT MOBILE EXHIBITION” aims to be. Therefore, I made it my duty as an artist and designer to help establish that continuous function through my willingness to accept all things unique. Why? Because everything interactive has an interesting outlook and voice on life that should be celebrated.

The overall goal of this design is to provide a clean and cost effective solution so that the message and the awareness of this social issue wouldn’t be sacrificed due to practicality and budget. I felt it was important that as the world becomes more diverse we must showcase more diverse thinking, which will bring on more innovative action. What I saw as the problem is the lack of exposure and the ability to silent one’s voice. Thus, the position of this “SHIFT MOBILE EXHIBITION” is break that barrier, but SHIFT the world into a new dynamic world of interaction.
