THE STORY DE EEKHOORN DUTCH FURNITURE DESIGNS AND PRODUCES ROBUST, CONTEMPORARY AND EASY-TO-ASSEMBLE FURNITURE FOR OVER 40 YEARS. THE FAMILY BUSINESS IS OPERATIVE IN MORE THAN 50 COUNTRIES AND COLLABORATES WITH AROUND 1,500 DEALERS WORLDWIDE. The portfolio embodies three brands: WOOOD, BePureHome and vtwonen. We achieve this by providing smart automated processes and delivering the content. Hence, there is a strong focus on digital and IT”.
HISTORY
In 1980, Father de Smit acquired a large farm from
BePureHome
Grandfather de Smit and started manufacturing furniture for DIY stores. Rapidly, his robust and easy-to-assemble furniture distributed across The Netherlands. His sons, Winfried and Jos, joined the business in 1993 and researched how they could create and design a complete collection. In 2001, Gerard, Winfried and Jos de Smit, acquired De Eekhoorn Dutch Furniture. “We started to import items that we could not or did not want to produce ourselves. The import of these chairs, sofas and metal cabinets accelerated the growth of the business. At this moment, our brother Gerard joined the family business and our father retired. Following these steps, we have put a lot of effort into export. De Eekhoorn Dutch Furniture has developed from a pure furniture production corporation into a powerful international player with its own brand portfolio, marketing and content creation”.

STRENGTH
As soon as online shopping emerged, De Eekhoorn Dutch Furniture flourished along with it. Its strength is the focus on both the production and sale of furniture as well as its automation. Precisely this combination generates De Eekhoorn Dutch Furniture as a firm and solid furniture manufacturer and seller. “More than half of our turnover is generated via online channels. We now have approximately 1,500 dealers in more than 50 countries because external webshops do not have to store our products in their warehouse. This reduces risks with our collection. Dealers solely have to sell our products and we handle the remaining distribution processes. Our distribution center precisely balances product and stock data real time and, if required, delivers directly to the consumer. The removal of thresholds generates a fruitful relationship with external shops”.

THE TEAM
De Eekhoorn Dutch Furniture is an association with multiple departments each composed of team members that invest effort in their work. One of the most inspiring division is the Product Design & Sourcing team. Out of our head quarter, refreshing designs and sketches are created and new collections for our labels emerge. Additionally, private labels are part of the expertise. Consequently, our team collaborates with experts and brands worldwide. “Our team is bright, young and has a unique eye for trend and detail. We are proud that our business flourishes this way. Nevertheless, the structure will always remain horizontal and the atmosphere informal. This is due to our down-to-earth Dutch mentality”.

Last year, a big dream was realized: a new headquarters with distribution center and showroom has been designed and built. This exceptional architectural building is 17 meters high and offers 190,000 m³ of space for the entire collection. The building contains the Experience Center and showroom which covers a space greater than 2,500 m². The brands WOOOD, BePureHome and vtwonen are uniquely presented in different style rooms. “Besides exhibiting new collections, our magnificent new showroom provides us with space to organize workshops and presentations. We have developed a special app with which customers and businesses can scan all the items. This immediately provides our customers with all the product information and makes it straightforward to order products. Customers are able to schedule an appointment during the week and bring, for example, project customers with them. Our account managers and staff of our Experience Center will be happy to help”.
THE DISTRIBUTION CENTER
The European distribution center is also located in the new building. Here, space for more than 25,000 pallets of imported and self-produced items is available. De Eekhoorn Dutch Furniture pursues a completely paperless and automated process. “Our goal is to shorten delivery times, create larger stocks and quicker availability of products. However, our overarching goal is efficiency improvement. We deliver a large proportion of the products directly to the consumer via dropshipment solutions. The products do not constantly have to relocate to different warehouses. This results in a comprehensively different distribution method. We attempt, and succeed, to apply an ‘order today, receive tomorrow’ approach both online as well as offline. Our next step will be to implement dropshipment throughout Europe”.
INTERNATIONAL POSITION
More than 30 percent of the collection is produced in the own factory in The Netherlands with the production of wooden furniture - e.g. pine and oak. The production functions with an eye for quality and in accordance with the compositions of the design department. Hence, De Eekhoorn Dutch Furniture operates as pure Dutch craftsmanship based on internationally competitive prices. “We have knowledge on what is for sale in this industry and how the prices are composed. The fact that we are
competitive in terms of price is due to our automated production. Besides, we have the advantage of being able to purchase and transport our timber close by, particularly from Scandinavia. Internationally, our brands WOOOD, BePureHome and vtwonen have an exclusive positioning. This typical Dutch ‘cut’ in our design is difficult to capture for furniture manufacturers in other countries. Taken together, we create and enjoy a strong competitive position internationally”.

VISION ON SUSTAINABILITY
De Eekhoorn Dutch Furniture extends remarkable attention to sustainable production. For the production of wooden furniture in the factory in Zwaagdijk-Oost FSC®-certified wood is used. De Eekhoorn Dutch Furniture considers the preservation of nature and responsible forest management crucial and generates conscious decisions. “We constantly ask ourselves: how can the production be more sustainable? Besides working with sustainable materials, it also depends on how these are subsequently processed. At our manufacturing plant in The Netherlands, we spray our furniture with water-based paint and lacquer. We utilize a special, high-tech spraying installation. Consequently, we act fast, clean and responsible. In this way we save liters of paint!”
PROJECTS
De Eekhoorn Dutch Furniture develops furniture suitable for intensive use in its factory. Design, production and distribution are internally managed. Therefore, projects can be switched quickly with a favorable pricequality ratio. “We are the suitable partner to get acquainted with due to all our experiences in the field of hotels, restaurants, apartments and office furnishing. An example of this is the fruitful collaboration with Royal Theatre Carré. We were challenged to create a convenient solution for a new auditorium layout in the COVID-19 period. Since we respond to the latest trends or create them ourselves, we are the outstanding partner for (large) projects!”

Life in

Let us introduce one of our newest colors in the collection: chestnut! Not so long ago, brown, in shades ranging from beige to copper to chestnut to chocolate, was a neutral choice of color for interiors. However, black as trend color excluded brown and ruled for years. Will brown take over again? We feel that there are no rules! We do observe that the neutral trends are back, edging out white and gray. This cheeky chestnut color is one of them.
