UNDERGRADUATE ARCHITECTURE PORTFOLIO ( 2015 - 2020 )

Page 1

We are living in a time of intense experimentation with architectural forms which induces a hunger of eye and mind for more basic forms. It is not just that we can tire of novelty and complexity, but also that we can yearn for a clarity of meaning not easily found in them. This does not refer to a nostalgia for the stripped-down shapes of early Modernism, but rather to purer geometric volumes that have appeared in architecture over the ages, the meaning of which is not in doubt and does not need to be interpreted. - Lebbeus Woods

01 RANGAMANDIRA OPEN AIR THEATRE AND BIO GAS PLANT DOCUMENTATION AND DESIGN INSERT

Site Location : Bendebembli, Yadgir, Karnataka August - December ,2016 Instructors: Mahalakshmi Karnad, Sandeep Sen, Govind Raj

Bendebemli is a village in North Karnataka in Yadgir district. It has semi-arid type of climate .This climate prevails for most part of the year. The climate and topographical condtions of the village are not quite favourable for the growth of rich vegetation and forest. The housing typology in this village is about 200300 years old.The materials used and the type of construction was responding to the climate in such a way that it felt cool and comfortable in the interior space. The chosen site was south west facing one of dimensions 24 x 15 m.Within the cluster , most of the spaces were built. Open spaces were present at lower level than the road.

Each of these clusters housed around 30-35 people living within a single house. On the western side of the site is Doddmane and on the southern side we have the post office. Hence, this area has lot of people moving around. Most of the people look for katte which acts as an informal gathering space.

The villagers have an oppurtanity to generate bio gas both from livestock waste as well as human waste . Since there is a level difference within the site, the space can be used for two purposes - an open air theatre above and bio gas unit below. The main part of the design is a simple curve which acts like a wall seprating the private and the public realm.

EXTERIOR VOIDS INFLUENCE INTERIOR DESIGNS

The design sits in the middle of a densly packed area in Basavnagudi facing Ramakrishna Ashram Circle. Its placed beside Ramakrishna Ashram in a corner site. It draws inspiration from OMA’s Casa da musica’s roof terrace which opens up into the Porto city and the circle , making the city itself as a dramatic backdrop to all its performances thus achieving symbolism , visibility ,access all in one gesture. The idea was to use the building similarly to establish sight lines to various landmarks around the site. These sight lines along with the site lines (lines arising due to site condition ) helps us in establishing the form. The building tries to imitate the densly packed context by appearing dense from outside but light from inside due to its circular free flowing form.

Voids are established from the 3D mass based on these sight lines which open up to the directions of Lalbagh, Bull temple, Ramakrishna Ashram and Gavi Gangadhareshwara temple. This makes the user align with respect to the context everytime they experience voids. The site lines on the other hand helps us in establishing the frontages and plazas for the project. These site lines are derived through visual extending the lines of Gandhi Bazaar and Hayavadhana Road creating Frontages and plazas which welcomes the various local seasonal festivals such as the Kadle Kai Parishe into the building. The exterior void influence the interior programs and add to the form.

04 THE JENGA CODE INTERIOR DESIGN - LIBRARY AND STUDIO FOR ILLUSTRATOR Site : A single storey riverside overlooking building August - December , 2018 Instructors: Meera Vasudev, Gaurav Sareen, Megha Nanaiah.

“My books are not about different components that fit together like in a jigsaw puzzle, its about creating the space around the components , which is almost as important as the components themselves. And that space changes and blends depending on what the components are “ - Richard Grossman The design started with a self generated brief with a condition of having one work component and one sell component. A bookstore with a studio space for Illustrator along with spill out spaces such as Cafe ,discussion zones and reading corners which add to the main components were chosen. The initial idea was to design a bookstore where each reading space guarrantees unblocked views towards the spillout reading spaces, cafes and discussion zones.

This later transformed into an idea where the shelves itself act as enclosures and thus mark the circulation. In doing so these different blocks( shelves) can be placed like Jenga pieces which create an irregular fun space and can be modified later. This results in maximum utilisation for book storage as well as create cozy acloves for the book readers. The work component on the other hand was chosen to compliment the book store so as to give a studio space for book illustrator along with common discussion zones. The material pallete chosen for this project was wood and concrete in the interior to give a mixed feeling of the excitement of new books as well as warmth of old books. The idea to replicate the jenga blocks in the common spaces creates a fun , irregular space. 16

05 SPACES OF VOYEUR RESTORATION OF WAREHOUSES ALONG THE CANAL STRETCH OF ALLEPPEY Site : Commercial Canal, Alleppey, Kerala February - June , 2020 Instructors: Seema Maiya, Anup Naik, Nagaraj Vastarey, Mehul Patel.

This thesis draws analogies from the movie - rear window and looks at the interactions between voyeur and the spaces. View becomes a powerful connection that links space and talks about interaction within a singular space. This explores and exploits the different forms of gaze - from public gaze to observing gaze that operate along the backwater canals of Alleppey which can be used in restoration of abandoned warehouses. Objective of the design was to look at how canals act as a link between sea and lake by exploring the lost memories of the port and trade that used to happen in earlier days. The abandoned warehouses understands itself as becoming a spectacle within its context and exploits its presence further for any public informant.

The backyard spaces of these buildings are designed to explore in terms of serial vision ideas. The old buildings or the warehouses in this case act as a visual apparatus or a medium of viewing what happens in the backyard spaces of these buildings. The architecture of gaze can be used as a tool to look at public and private and manipulate them. Furthermore, this looks at exploring encounters between old buildings and new. This project represents an important design aspect view which knowingly or unknowing forms the basis for design of most of the buildings. This looked at how this view or gaze could be effectively used in restoration of warehouses along the canals of Alleppey. Various ideas on serial was explored too. 26

06 PERSONAL PROJECTS FARMHOUSE AND RESIDENCE RENOVATION Site : Davangere, Karnataka Projects undertaken in collabaration with Omkar Associates, Davangere

Farmhouse Project : The farmhouse was to be designed to sit in the center of the 5 Acre farmhouse of the client. The brief for the design involved of a farmhouse with 2 bedrooms , a living and relaxation space along with a seperate space for outdoor dining / party space to be connected with kitchen. Since the farmhouse was designed to sit in the center, the idea started out with extending views along longitudinal axis . The form was developed from a nine square where the central square becomes living room and other rooms are placed around it. The left part of the house / squares house the pathway and entrance for outside into the outdoor seating area without having to pass through the private spaces of the farmhouse.

The two walls along with the living space segregates spaces into public, semi public and private. The staircase on the other hand acts as a vertical element to achieve balance to the horizontality of the design. Residence Renovation Project : The residence renovation project was to add an additional level / floor comprising of two bedrooms and a living with study. The residence in the present state was idenitified with sloping roof and felt massive. Therefore through elevation the idea of slopinh roof was continued but was made to look to light and modern through the elevation design. 42

Four types of the pocket spaces were identified near the kindergarten classrooms , two of which were made into play area and reading space for toddlers. 1. Kindergarten cutout 1 2. Kindergarten cutout 2 3. Reading room underneath central staircase 4. Play area underneath staircase. display wall which was divided into two - doodle wall and black wall The staffroom cutouts were designed with two types of interactive installations A Xylophone installation A Periscope installation Since, these are the areas which needed a bit of formal design as well as fun learning element to it , the two above installations were found to be appropriate. The periscope had the viewing hole at the ground floor and the sight ended at different floor levels, some even going above the rooftop. Also, both the areas were equipped with noticeboards and a seating since it was near to staffroom.

For more details on the project , scan the code -

"Lihaaf" ("The Quilt") is a 1942 Urdu short story written by Ismat Chughtai. Published in the Urdu literary journal Adab-i-Latif, it led to much controversy, uproar and an obscenity trial. The story brought immediate notoriety to Ismat because the theme around which the whole narrative revolved was not just taboo but something that was never even acknowledged an existence, never mentioned in polite society. Not only did it focus sharply on female sexuality foregrounding the sexual needs of a woman, it went many steps further in making a deliberate and conscious choice of an alternative sexuality rather than a conventional heterosexual behaviour. To write of such matters at a time when sex was discussed among women only in whispers was Ismat's expression of the revulsion she felt for those women who suppressed their sexuality and meekly submitted to the oppressive male.
