Growing up I wanted to be an artist, a poet, a designer, and everything in between. I’ve always been told to pick one and make a career out of it. So I decided to be an architect and be all of it at once. Hi I’m Deekshid Lal. I’ve completed my 3rd year of B.arch studies and am currently seeking internship opportunities. I’m always excited to learn new things and develop my technical and artistic skills. Looking forward to working with you.

AALTO’S RETREAT AR ALVAR AALTO’S WEEKEND COTTAGE S3 2019

Location - Kothamangalam, Ernakulam Site Area - 4677 sq.m 115.5 cent

Type - Special Residence Year - Semester 3, 2019

Aalto’s Retreat WEEKEND COTTAGE FOR AR. ALVAR AALTO

Creating a Weekend Retreat Home for the Finnish architect & designer Alvar Aalto. The site located at Kothamangalam offered a calm and peaceful atmosphere best for spending some alone time away from the bustle of the city. The neighboring river, the plethora of vegetation, and fauna also add to the peaceful atmosphere. Taking inspiration from the site and context. Design with zero to no alteration to site contours. Landscaping features also compliment the site. Aalto’s iconic red brick form contrasts the greens surrounding it. Structure to bring in ample sun and wind. Use of courtyard and clerestory windows to bring ample sunlight all the while reducing heat gain. Experimented with multiple sill level fenestrations.

THE NEXUS

The Nexus WHERE GODS DANCE

Program

Site

Concept

A performing arts institute teaching the Kerala Traditional Art forms of Kathakali and The Malabar sacred art form of Theyyam Thira. The program contains administration areas, classrooms, informal performing spaces, a library, gym, canteen, staff offices, utilities, and a cultural center. Creating a Nexus point for human and divine interventions. Inspired by the art form where Kathakali is the dramatic dance that depicts the legends and myths whereas Theyyam is believed to be the dance performed by humans whose bodies are temporarily inhabited by heavenly beings. The interior spaces can be broadly classified as either divine spaces or humane spaces. Creating a scenario where one learns with the divine and performs in front of humans. 14

The Green Shift RESPONSIVE VERTICAL RESIDENTIAL HOUSING

3

The project is a 19-floor high-rise apartment building housing 70 dwelling units. This 68.0-meter tower is envisioned entirely made from responsibly sourced timber using cross-laminated timber (CLT). Including the elevator shafts are made entirely from CLT and columns made from glued laminated timber, Glulam.

This project aims to shift perspectives from traditional construction to a responsible alternative. The program includes a basement parking facility, ground-floor commercial units, and first-floor amenities followed by 17 floors of dwelling units. The design aims to give much focus to the unnoticed basement floor by shifting the main lobby of the building underground. Thereby separately handling the circulations of the residents from the public. The semi-opened basement acts as a wind tunnel capturing the wind from the river and transporting them to the higher floors. This along with the green terrace makes the building less energy-dependent. The vertical zoning aims to cultivate the communal feelings of the inhabitants. The communal connection which is often lost in vertical rise housing is preserved through the use of careful vertical zoning.

Location - Vengola, Perumbavoor Site Area - 22886.79 sq.m 565.5 cent

The Open Community A BETTER GATED COMMUNITY A community for a total of 110 families comprising 21 individual villas, 2 low-rise apartments, and a 10-floor high-rise apartment. The units are placed along a green belt that runs through the heart of the plot. Vehicles are given less priority and designed in such a way that all amenities and services are accessible by walking. The project’s main aim is to reduce segregation within the community and encourage positive interactions. The project’s design of boundary walls nurtures neighborhood feelings. Instead of focusing amenities in one corner, they are instead placed along the green belt making it easily accessible as well as transforming them into activity nooks. Even the main entrance to the community is through pedestrian access with the vehicular entry shifted to the sidelines. The commercial unit provided ensures better relationships with outside people as well.

The Reclaimed Greens REFORMING AN URBAN GREEN CORRIDOR

In the ever growing city of Kochin there is a noticable reduction of green spaces. Only a 0.49 % net area of parks, playgrounds and open spaces area leading to scattered communities and unhealthy lifestyle. In this scenario the need to preserve the available greens are of atmost importance. The design proposal explores the benifits and importance of preserving such green. Creating a green corridor along the Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium premisi and the connecting Stadium Link Road. The project occupies the available area converting it into live and active linear park. Introducing a grey water insfrastruture to improve water usage efficiency. Connecting the multiple STPs within the zone and repurposing the grey water which are else dumped into the canal. The entire stretch of the park acts as a massive rain water harvesting system. Together with the canal redevelopment aims to reduce the overall toll on the water usage. Another highlight of the project is the introduction of Agro Gym facilities. Providing open gym facilities which diverts the physical exercise to urban agriculture production.
